HT5457 How do I update my 1st generation IPAD to IOS 5.1 and I do not have a software update feature on it.

I have a 1st generation IPAD and it is currently running IOS 4.3. I would like to update it to IOS 5.1 but am having difficulty doing it. I have followed the update software instructions in ITUNES but my IPAD will not display the update software feature under General in Setttings. What do I need to do?

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

Connect it to your syncing PC and update using iTunes on the PC. The OTA (over the air & under Settings>General>Software Update) update was introduced with iOS 5.

Not exactly. Just because apps have updates available, does not mean they are required. You will not be able to update apps to get the new features and looks but the version of the apps you currently have should work as they do right now even if they are no longer available in the app store. Just be sure to backup up your device and your iTunes library.
My frustration is also in the lack of options.. I have a 15 yr old Win 98 machine that I could still use if I wanted to – albeit with outdated, old, but still functioning software. My guess is you have a very old version of iTunes on your Mac.
Go to http://www.apple.com/itunes on your mac to download a more recent copy.
Depending on how old your Mac is and how old its OS X is, you may not get too current an iTunes version. The latest is 11.0.4.

IOS 4 will not update over the air (WiFi etc). You need to plug it to iTunes. After that you can do future updates over the air.

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
    •    Launch Settings app
    •    Tap on Wi-Fi
    •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

I can't update my 3rd generation ipad to ios 8

I want to update my 3rd generation iPad to iOS 8 through the OTA update. I have enough space as it requires 5.8GB and I have almost 10 GB. I clicked on download and install. It did download the iOS update file and then it says, "Preparing Update." In that part, it is very slow and suddenly it freezes then reboots my device to apple logo. When it goes back, it still says, "Preparing Update" and then it will freeze again and reboot. I don't know what to do. I want to have iOS 8 so bad. I have enough space and I don't run apps on the background. I have this problem over a day now. I even tried deleting the iOS 8 file and re-download it but same thing happens. Any suggestion or advice? Thanks in advance.
