HT5957 What about the mic going out? That was a major issue for many apple users who updated to iOS7

A lot of people mics like mine have gone out due to the update iOS7. My iPod Tocub 5th Gen has STILL NOT returned the mic back to it's normal functioning state. FIX THIS ASAP.

But they sky-rocketed after iOS7. What was the point of Replying if you aren't going to help me? I need to know what to do about this. My mic is a very important to how I effectively use my iPod and without it my iPod had literally no use.

What is the life expectancy of the older base stations (flying saucer/spaceship looking one) and what are the telltale connection signs that it's starting to go?
Apple has never published any life expectancy specifications for any of their routers (or desktops/laptops) that I am aware of. As a rule of thumb, I would consider two years for any consumer electronics that operates 24 x 7 to be a reasonable period. Obviously some experience more or less and it would depend on a number of factors: ambient temperature, electrical circuit stability, area prone to lightening strikes, etc.
Some telltale signs that an AirPort has (or is about to fail):
Status lights are not illuminated or do not match any of the known configurations.
Unit feels cool to the touch after power is applied even after a lengthly (15-30 minutes) period of time.
Unit refuses to intialize, even after performing multiple "factory default" resets.
    Weak or no wireless signal.
    Ethernet port(s) not functioning
    Etc.
Also, are there any compatiility issues with newer models and G5/G4s?
    Three potential issues:
Depending on the version of OS X you are running on these clients, they may not be able to support the latest AirPort Utility required to administer the latest AirPorts. OS X 10.5.7 is the minimum required.
Support for 802.11n connectivity. Most G5 or G4 Apples support 802.11g, some only 802.11b.
Support for WPA2. Not supported if the G5 or G4 is equipped with the Original AirPort Card.

When ever the power goes out or I restart my iMac the external hard drive that is used for backups by Time Machine is dismounted and all backups are gone. I can reselect it and it will start working again, but I am worried if the iMac hard drive should fail will I be left without a backup ?

It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.
That will erase it.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast).  Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27.   If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.

If you have a rescue email address set up on your account then you can try going to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you might see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email address set up then go to Express Lane  and select 'iTunes' from the list of 'products' in the middle of the screen.
Then select 'iTunes Store', and on the next screen select 'Account Management'
Next choose 'iTunes Store Account Questions' or 'iTunes Store account security' (it appears to vary by country) and fill in that you'd like your security questions/answers reset.
You should get an email reply within about 24 hours (and check your Spam folder as well as your Inbox)

What about the problems with the Trojan virus will this be a problem also for me using Mac

    What Trojan?
If you're referring to the DNS Changer Trojan, it's highly unlikely you're affected. The actual distribution of the trojan was stopped several years ago and the perpertrators jailed.
The FBI has been maintaining the servers used by the trojan for the last 5 years in order to give affected systems time to be purged. They will finally shut them down on Monday.
    Ensure that your router and the Mac's network settings are set for the DNS addresses of your ISP, or if you're not sure what they should be, change them to Open DNS using the IP addresses;

Yea I would have to say wait until the release of IOS 5, because the phone will probably run it a lot smoother. I mean go ahead and buy the Iphone 4 if you are dying to have it, because you can just update it which is no big deal at all, but it would be the smarter thing to wait for the new updates.
And the networ issue as far as I am aware is fixed on the Verizon iPhones, so it really depends on which service you have.
    - correct me if i am wrong
Have to disagree here, Apple have not even announced an iphone 5, it is pointless to speculate that we will see one or not see one until Apple actually releases a statement. ios was built and tested on the iphone 4 so there will not be any slowdown or laggyness compared to a phone that has not been released yet.
If we are advising potential apple product buyers then we should not be putting them off buying a iphone 4 on speculations alone. Just because apple have for the last few years released an iphone every june/july does not mean then have to stick to this approach.
Apple have not issued any statement regarding an iphone 5, until this time it does not exist, only in heresay on the internet.
Any one looking to get an iphone 4, to you i would say waiting until ios 5 is released is a personal choice, no matter if you wait or not you will be able to update via itunes. One way or another in the future you will have to do an ios update via itunes whether this is the 5.0 software or 5,2,1.
Please note that Apple are very closed mouthed about new hardware releases and potentially a new iphone could be round the corner, however there is no evidence to suggerst this, i.e Apple have not even mentioned an iphone 5 this year anything you hear towards the contrary is media spin thus far and speculation.
ios 5 was built and tested to work seamlessly on iphone 4, the beta software released to developers is being tested on iphone 4. Please do not listen to people telling you that the iphone 4 will not run this ios as well as a phone that does not exist yet. When iphone 5 launches it will most likely have dual processors and not until its launch will the next gen apps start appearing.

  • What is the SPDIF Optical Out meant for?

I have connected the optical s/pdif out from my Neo2 Platinum to my Panasonic 5.1 Receiver, but I can´t hear anything. The "red light" reaches the receiver, but it can´t decode the signal somehow. I had this with my Audigy 2 card: When I enabled "96khz" my receiver couldn´t read the signal, but when I changed this option to "48khz" it works perfectly. Unfortunately I can´t see this option within the AC97 drivers. So what can I do?
Yesterday I had PowerDVD and Winamp running side by side. I could actually hear the PowerDVD movie, but not the MP3 from Winamp. So it has something to do with the signal from the mainboard. How can I change this?

Quote from: bassmadrigal on 14-July-05, 15:42:01
The spdif out is only capable of relaying dolby encoded sound to the receiver. It is unable to transfer 2 channel..
    Um. No.
Per the original question - the optical connector carries the exact same signal as the coaxial digital.
The funny truth is that SPDIF wasn't intended for listening. It was intended for karaoke. They thought they'd make CDs with the lyrics encoded in the less significant bits of the audio stream, and have the karaoke machine strip them out of the bitstream.
But audiophiles started using the SPDIF digital out on their CD players to connect them to audiophile-grade DACs.
Since it wasn't really designed for audio, there's some occasional (mostly insignificant) bit distortion, and the distortion can be made worse by a ground loop introduced by the shield on the coaxial connection.
The optical connection overcomes those issues pretty well. There's no electrical connection and thus no possibility of multiple paths to ground, and the data latches built into the optical transmitter and receiver guarantee that bits are better defined.
Don't pay a lot for optical spdif ("toslink") cables. The only feature worth anything is strain relief on the connector, to keep you from accidentally yanking the fiber out of the connector. The common plastic fiber works just as well as glass on hookups less than about 150 feet in length.
The relivant specifications are IEC60958 and IEC61937. Google for 'em, it's interesting reading.
ANYWAY, as per the specific question.
Pursuant to IEC60958 and AC97 specifications, and restricted by the choice of the ALC850 codec chip, the digital audio connectors on the Neo2 are capable of 48khz 16 bit transmissions.
This includes 48khz 16 bit PCM stereo audio and Dolby Digital compressed audio up to and including 48khz DTS.
Whether or not the windows drivers are capable of the dolby passthrough, i dunno, I've never booted windows on mine. Linux (with ALSA drivers) surely can.
Some audio codec chips are capable of more rates. IEC60958 and it's extensions allow for 32khz, 44.1khz and 96khz in addition to the AC97-mandated 48khz. 18 and 24 bit resolutions are also allowed.
If you intend to build a system for use as a home-theater PC, i highly recommend finding a motherboard with a codec that will at least do 44.1khz. Resampling the audio to 48khz can do horrible things to it. 32khz is only needed for some videos you might download from the internet, some VCDs, etc. You'd already know if you needed 96khz.
Your games are 5.1 but they are not encoding Dolby surround on the fly, so the digital connector is only going to get you 2 channels unless you are watching a DVD or something.
The exception is nForce2 SoundStorm boards, which have an on-the-fly dolby digital encoder.
Dolby is starting to license out their real-time encoder, so it may be possible in the future to buy a piece of software that will push your 6 channel game audio through your digital output.
This is why most surround receivers have a multi-channel input. You're just going to have to get a bunch of cables and run analog.
I also highly recommend that you invest in ground loop isolators.
Since your computer has a three-pronged power plug, it has it's own route to earth ground. Most stereo equipment does not.
When you plug the analog audio output from your computer into your home stereo receiver, in most cases you will hear a 60hz hum on the speakers. This is a harmless (but annoying) tone generated by the multiple paths to ground in your electrical connections.
I've had good experiences with RCA type ground loop isolators intended for car audio use. This has RCA connectors just like your stereo. You'll plug the isolator into the stereo and the computer into the isolator using normal audio cables.
I've had good experiences with Scosche ESO34 ground loop isolators. I've paid about $10/ea for them on ebay. You may pay as much as $15 or $20 for them at car audio specialty stores. Sometimes you can get them cheaper, especially if you're buying more than one of them.
Other RCA type ground isolators probably work just as well. I actually have a box of half a dozen of some other brand that i haven't tried yet, that i paid about $2/ea for.
Some come with brown wires dangling out of them, for earth ground. Personally i wouldn't connect them to anything.
Some of the nicer sound cards - most of the Audigy line for example - has on-card ground isolation, and won't need an outboard isolator. Motherboard audio almost certainly does not have ground isolation.

  • What causes the rainbow swirling icon that locks a program such as address book?

What causes the rainbow swirling icon that locks a program such as address book? And how do I get out of it?

The Finder is just assigning the wrong kind and icon to what I presume are plist files. Often rebuilding the Launch Services will cure this, but sometimes Finder gets a strange bee in its bonnet about some particular combination of characteristics and what they mean, and it can't be dissuaded. Unless you are opening plist files, and get really annoyed when you double click one and Address Book launches and announces "wrong type of file" you can just ignore it. In my own ~/Library/Prefences folder plists are generally labeled correctly, probably because I have them assigned to open with Apple's own Property List Editor. But there are some other preferences that Finder has decided are something altogether different than what they are: WingNuts Prefs and Saved Games are both believed to be Eudora preferences; a whole batch of other prefs from a dozen differenct programs are described as TextWrangler preferences, and there's a another group thought to be Unix Executables. As long as the program they belong to isn't having a problem finding and writing to them, don't worry about it.

  • What is the best software programs that I can use to read, write and modify data / files on external HD (NTFS format i.e.  Windows) ?

    Hi guys,
I’m new to Mac and have a MacBook Pro Lion OS (10.6.8 I think !!!) with Parallels 7 (Windows 7) installed. Can someone please tell me what is the best software program that I can use to read, write and modify data / files on external HD (NTFS format) from the Mac OS ? I heard of Paragon and Tuxera NTFS. Are they free ? Are they good ? Are there any other software programs out there ? I heard that some people have issues with Paragon.
    Thanks.

Your best bet would be to take the drive to the oldest/compatible with that drive Windows PC and grab the files off, right click and format it exFAT (XP users can download exFAT from Microsoft) and then put the files back on.
Mac's can read and write all Windows files formats except write to NTFS (and in some cases not read) so if you can change the format of the drive to exFAT (all data has to be remove first) then you will have a drive that doesn't require paid third party NTFS software (a license fee goes to Microsoft) for updates.
Also it's one less hassle to deal with too.

  • What is the iphone line out impedance

using the dock connector, what is the iphone line out impedance?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is your Powerbook one that has Optical in and out? If it is, then it has SPDIF ports instead of the usual minijacks of older Powerbooks. You can tell by opening Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info -> selecting Audio (Built-in). If SPDIF is mentioned, then you have Optical in and out.
If it is, then I found this interesting article which may help you out:
