HT5958 We are 4 min in to editing a video on final cut pro.  now my computer is freezing up.  I have heard that this is a glitch from downloading. (beyond frustrated)  is this from working from 2 external hard drives?  PLEASE HELP! =)

PLEASE HELP. =)
we are about 4 minutes into editing a video for the first time on final cut pro x 10.1.  everything was going very smoothly, but then it started freezing up.  I had to do a hard reset and took it into the computer store that actually installed final cut for us.  they suggested that our mac actually is not capable of keeping up with final cut. (I FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE!!)  We work on an IMAC 2.66 ghz intel core 2 duo.  8 gb 1067 mhz ddr3. software os x 10.9.1 (hopefully that info will help for your suggestions)  Because we have soooooooooooo many hours of high def video, we are working off of two external hard drives.... is this a problem?? or do we really need to upgrade our computer?????

Like Russ said, check Activity Monitor and see what else is running and turn off any Applications that aren't needed.
Turn off wi-fi or disconnect the wire that goes to the Internet
Turn off Background Rendering (if you see an orange line on the top of the time line that moves along and gets shorter while you're not doing anything that is a good sign that Background Rendering is running.
I haven't used 10.1 yest but on the previous version there was a small circle approximately in the middle of the screen, about 1/2-inch or 1 cm in diameter, and it would have a number inside. The number is the percent complete of what is hapening. When it is Rendering the percentage will be shown.
Basically, you probably need to free up resources.
For what it is worth, my previous Mac Pro was a 1,1 2.66 machine, also with 8GB of, I think, 667 memory, and it would process FCPX 10.0.9 okay. It did have an upgraded video card, though.

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.

  • Problem running Itunes from external hard drive- Please Help!

So, last night I transferred my entire music folder over to an external hard drive. It copied all the files and I then proceeded to tell itunes where my new music folder was located. The problem I ran into was when I actually deleted the music files from my internal hard drive my library won't automatically find the files. When I click on a song it comes up with an error message saying, "original file cannot be found, would you like to locate file?". If I tell it yes, I can then manually tell it where the file is, and it will play. I'm really hoping there is an easier way around this issue because going in and doing this for every song in my library would take years. Should I clear out the library and then drag it from the external hard drive? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I am experiencing a similar problem. I already had all my files on an external drive, where I had transfered them a few months back, and everything was working fine. I have now moved them, again, to a larger external drive, did everything the same, but now receive the message "original file cannot be found, would you like to locate file?" I was advised to use the "add to library" button under "FILE" in the menu bar and all the music was finally imported into iTunes, but the problem now is that the new data on the music files is missing all the metadata, and I am still stuck with all the original files with the "!" in front of each file that is going to have to be manually deleted one file at a time, all 30,000 of them. I would like a way to start over and get it right the first time. Anyone have any solutions? I have found a program, "Super Remove Dead Tracks" which should solve the problem of eliminating the "!" tracks, but so too all the metadata. Ideally I'd like to be able to locate the original files with all the attached metadata and get back to where I was 24 hours ago.

  • I can't copy files to External Hard Drive : Please help..

    Evening,
I've just bought a Macbook and am just getting to grips with it. This is my first question on this forum...the first of many no doubt.
Problem I've got is that I can copy file's from an external hard drive on to the MAC but I can't go back the other way and copy file's from the MAC on to the external hard drive - it says 'New Folder cannot be modified'.
When I go into 'Ownership and Permission' of the external hard drive it says I can read only.
The Hard Drive is a Octigen USB 2.0 drive if that helps..
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help

How confident are you that MacFuse/ntfs-3g is a reliable option for ordinary humans? It is at version 0.2.2, not long out of beta, the FAQ mentions slow write performance and other rough edges (possibly fixed in the current version), and this is a comment by the author as of 1/11/07:
"Small disclaimer: Please note that MacFUSE is a complex piece of software, and it is a work in progress. We believe in releasing early and often, so we're releasing it now so that the community can help us to make it more robust."
I have no need for it whatsoever, but if I did, I would have concerns about using it for a backup drive.

  • Missing Files in Finder from External Hard Drive - PLEASE HELP

Hi everyone, found myself with a bit of a problem and feeling a little stressed out.
I have an external, Thunderbolt hard drive which seems to be working ok. Suddenly, after a reboot I am unable to see any files on the drive and the finder says 0 files. The disk size however remains the same, indicating the files are still somewhere on the drive. I am running 10.10.1 (14B25).
Before the reboot I was writing to the drive using Compressor, I cancelled the export and then rebooted. Since then I have attempted the following with no luck:
    1. Rebooted the computer / PRAM and SMC reset.
    2. Tried accessing the drive on another computer and account. No luck.
    3. Verified the drive with Disk Utility
    4. Repaired system permissions
    5. The external TB drive is a raid, I have checked the raid with the software for error and no errors are present and the Raid looks in good shape. No red lights, flashing, warning sounds etc.
    6. I re-indexed spotlight.
    7. I made all hidden files visible, and couldn't see the files but i found the following hidden files in the attached picture.
Could someone please give me some advice which could lead to the recovery of the data?
Many, many thanks in advanced, I look forward to hearing form you.
    Best, Jim.

    A small update:
I have tried using DiskWarrior - it sees the files and folders are there, confirms there is no physical disk problem but after a rebuild of the directory there are still no files present.
Is there a preference file or hidden file I could try and remove?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Jim.

  • Editing .AVI files in Final Cut Pro 5

I am trying to edit .AVI files on Final Cut Pro 5 on a volunteer basis.
I have converted the files to .MOV files with Quicktime Player.
I am able to import one of these files into Final Cut Pro 5, and can even watch it in the viewer.
But when I place it in the Sequence tab to edit it, I get a screen that says "UNRENDERED" for the whole clip.
Based on past experience, the video would be harder to edit in a rendered state.
Any advice on how to edit .AVI files would be much appreciated.

AVI files are quite similar to some .mov files, but the devil is in the details (so to speak.)
You don't give any particulars, so I'm going to assume you're working with standard definition NTSC video. Additionally, I'll assume that your system is PowerPC Mac since only FCP 5.1 and higher supports Intel processors.
FCP uses sequence presets that spell out the parameters for the timeline. If a clip is dissimilar or acquires enough filters to be functionally dissimilar, the timeline will become red for that portion of the timeline. The same is true for the audio portion of the clip.
The terms "QuickTime" and ".mov" (and probably ".AVI" for that matter) are kicked around as if they are specific but in fact they are quite vague. It's like saying you have a Ford; without any additional info like model and year,  it's hard to get down to cases.
Use Compressor or QuickTime Pro to convert your footage to DV/DVCPRO-NTSC (if it's SD and you're in North America) and make sure the audio is converted to 48KHz/16-bit. This should match the NTSC presets and your timeline should a "cool" color (dark blue to light green) and playback nicely.
Depending on the amount of processor power your system has, you may be able to play back clips with filters or even two or more layers of video without rendering. To be frank, don't count on it because someone has had well over 5 years to upgrade the system and hasn't so it may be "peaked out" already. You can usually step through the timeline using the arrow keys or by rendering short segments if you practice good "timeline hygiene" i.e., keep the timeline as clean as possible, don't strew clips over many video layers and let them stack up.
That should get you going, I strongly recommend you take a little time to read the help docs/// they actually can help.
    Good luck!

  • HT4927 I have just downloaded iPhoto from the app store. The photo library from my old laptop was backed up on an external hard drive and I retrieved the photos from there.  Now when I open the photos on my new Mac Book Pro, they are small - am I missing

I have just downloaded iPhoto from the app store. The photo library from my old laptop was backed up on an external hard drive and I retrieved the photos from there.  Now when I open the photos on my new Mac Book Pro, they are small - am I missing something?
I am using 10.8.2 Mountain Lion btw

I dragged the Photo library icon from the backup drive on to iPhoto on the laptop
That means you imported one Library to another.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
So the reason you're seeing small photos is because you're seeing the iPhoto thumbnails from the back up library.
    So, what to do?
Do you still have the back up? If so, trash this bunged up library and restore from the back up again. HOw to restore will depend entirely on how you made the back up, but no version of restoring includes importing the library.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How do I transfer photos from mac to external hard drive please

How do I transfer photos to a external hard drive please?

This answer may need to be expanded a bit. If your photos are in iPhoto and you are moving iPhoto's library to an external drive, once you've dragged the library to the external drive you'll need to let iPhoto know the library has moved. Hold the option key and double-click iPhoto (or click on the iPhoto icon on the Dock). You'll get a fileselector menu to select the library - point it to the external drive. Once you've established that the copied library has copied correctly you may drag the library on your computer to the trash and empty the trash.
Warning: You do have a backup of your entire computer, right? Just in case something goes awry with the process having a backup is always a good idea.

Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere?

I would like to transfer my iTunes and photos etc from my PC to my new iMac via a external hard drive. Would somebody recommend one. I read that the Western Digital Mybook Essential 3.0 is good. Though as Mac has 2.0 is this fast enough? I am a basic user, surfing only.

If you plan on using the WD with the Mac after the iTunes transfer I would strongly recommend against WD. WD external HD's tend to be the most troublesome with Macs. If you intend to use the drive for backup using Time Machine or creating a bootable clone then I'd recommend a higher quality drive than WD. The drives I'd recommend in that case would be:
    OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
    LaCie d2 Quadra series
    G-Tech G-DRIVE series
These are all high quality drives and enclosures with similar features. Personally I use the LaCie's however I would be happy to have OWC and G-Tech on my desk too. FWIW I've been using the LaCie's for 4 years and have 4 of them, all work perfectly and have never given me any trouble.

If both have Firewire ports then you can accomplish your goal by using Target Disk Mode. If this is not possible then you can do using an external drive or if you have a local network connect both to your network and use filesharing between the two computers.

  • Having **** trying to export films from itunes to an external hard drive! HELP!!! My mac air is FULL!

I have followed every article to the letter and can see the movies file sitting in my external hard drive, but when i click on a film SPOTIFY opens up! No film to be found anywhere!! What am i doing wrong? My mac air is full and wont run applications at the same time now!
    Thanks

What icon is present on the files? It sounds to me like you have your movies associated with Spotify as the opening application.  Get info on a file in Finder, then change the open application to iTunes, click on the "open all of this kind" button to use iTunes to open all files of that type with iTunes.
