HTML for iweb'08

I like so many others am finding difficulty working with iweb. I have been using komodo html editor, after publishing my iweb page to a folder, to 'touch-up' my pages, like adding "no left click" and so on. Recently i discovered that shadows in iweb dont work outside safari, I have been researching for the html to change this but am not sure about what I have found.
Does anyone know html shadow code that I can use? I found this site http://www.webtoolkit.info/css-drop-shadow.html but dont understand how to use it yet.

Are you referring to shadows on text?
Shadows on text are a CSS 3 feature which is fully supported by Safari.
Eventually more browsers will support it. I think firefox and latest versions of internet explorer do but I could be wrong.
I think if you adjust the transparency very slightly on your text it will be exported a picture and will be shown correctly in any web browser.
However, for search engine optimization purposes, having your text as pictures is not ideal. You should consider not relying on text shadows.

  • Scrolling RSS reader HTML for iWeb 09

    Hi
Anyone know whether it is possible to replace the standard RSS reader widget with something a bit flasher, quite fancy a scrolling reader that would roll through say 10 entries in a box. I've had a trawl through here and Google, but seem to be drawing a complete blank.
    Thanks

  • Is there a maximum website size for iWeb?

iWeb looked like the answer to my dreams. I needed to put together a website for my consulting business fast…I have another book coming out in a week or two.
I tried on of those sites where you use their development tools on-line. Big disappointment. Too restricted and wouldn't allow me to be creative. Then I looked at spending $400 (or whatever) for DreamWeaver and go through a long learning curve learning html.
Then I saw the ad for iWeb. Just what I needed. Mac software. Intuitive to use. A snap to learn. But I am now having problems publishing my iWeb created web-site to my domain. I am not using a .Mac account. The book already has my website listed as bobwallonline.com. Too late to change.
My Domain size, as measured in Application support, iWeb, is now at 8.7 MB on disk. I am exceeding iWeb's limitations or is the problem to be found with ftp software I'm using to publish my site. (I'm using Web Echo and have had nothing but trouble with it since I got started.)
So frustrating. I've got the tool that allows me to create just what I had in mind but I can't seem to publish it. Would a Macintosh support person please answer this so that I have a definitive answer as to whether or not I am exceeding iWeb's capabities? Thanks, Bob in Connecticut

Bob, I also believe that one of the main issues hindering your work is that you have an older computer with very little memory. On another note you should enter your web host via the internet. Log on to your hosting service and delete what ever files are in there. Take your iweb site and save it to a new folder on your desktop. This will put all your files neatly in one location. then use your ftp software to connect to your host and upload your site to the server. Once uploaded make sure your index page shows and your folder. It should work fine after that. If you like to download new FTP software try Interarchy 8.2 it's the one i'm using and it's pretty fast. I got it from the Apple website on their Mac OSX link. Once there go to the downloads Link and on the side bar look for the internet utilities link.
Hope that helps and good luck.

  • Most efficient photo size for iWeb 08

I am building my photography web site in iWeb 08. I have many photos that were previously edited in Photoshop. Some are jpeg and others are psd files. I plan to resize and save all as a jpeg. Then I will import all photo files into iPhoto and use iPhoto as my source location for iWeb.
Question: What size and resolution would be best for iWeb? I realize that iWeb will automatically resize the photos so I want my photos to be a little larger than that. I am trying to avoid importing huge photo files in to iPhoto when I smaller photo file is sufficient.

First of all go to iWeb preferences and uncheck "Optimize images on import".
To get a reasonably fast download time, its not a question of the size of the individual images but the sum total of all the images on a page. Some people put an incredible number of photos on a page and then wonder why it hangs in the browser.
To quickly change file format, decrease file size and get a visual indication of download speed for an image you could try the freeware ImageWell.
    http://xtralean.com/IWOverview.html
This application will also watermark your photos and will work in batch mode if you buy the shareware version.
If you want to optimize your JPEGs, as well as all your website files, you can use HTML Optimizer to noticeably increase your website download speed.

Publishing your site to a server, rather than .Mac, will also give you faster download and more storage space for your money.

  • Creating forms for Iweb sites

MY question is about creating forms for iweb sites.
    How do you do it?
I think I read somewere that you can't do this with iweb,
so I downloaded a free trial of rapidweaver, which will give me 3 pages for
the free trial, but it says you need php.
Which I don't know if I have php on my computer, my mac5 os x,
and I am not sure what php is.
If any one could explain how I can create forms on my iweb site
in a easy to understand point form.
    That would be great!

Well I am certainly willing to try, if you could
    explain how to do this
    Thanks for your reply.
    blueform,
If you found my first post to you helpful, please mark it as such. That way people will have an easier time searching for/with a similar question about this topic.
Okay, I can't go into all the dynamics of the process as each ISP may vary enough to make my description unusable. In other words, what works with my ISP may not work with yours. You'll need to check out your ISPes position and requirements as far as this goes.
The first and most important thing to check out is does your ISP allow you to use CGI scripting such as PERL or PHP. Many small locally based ISPes allow this feature. Some large ISPes in Canada such as Bell's Sympatico give you Web space but do not allow scripting.
Next, unless you are an accomplished programmer you need to find (ideally) a free script that allows you to e-mail a form. I generally recommend something from Matt's Script Archive The scripts are are simple, come with instructions and work fairly well. There is also PHP Junkyard. I use one of their scripts for a message board I have.
Be forewarned, there is a learning curve. Also, if your ISP permits these scripts, you will need an FTP client application to upload them once you have made any necessary modifications.
As an afterthought, you might Google around and see if anyone provides a service that might suit your needs. Usually in those cases all you need to do is enter some HTML code into your iWeb page. This is not a drag-n-drop process and requires some "under the hood" work. One last point. Most of the scripts that I've dealt with will require an e-mail address to send the completed forms. If all is done according to instructions, Spammers will never see the address (you set the permissions for the file that contains your e-mail address so that only the owner can read that particular file; the owner being you). Does this give you an idea of what is involved?

  • Cleaning up the HTML in iWeb

Greetings, Is there a way for me to clean up the HTML in iWeb? I want to clean it up so the " %20 " doesn't show up in the URLs. And will Apple fix this issue in the next release/version of iWeb, does anybody know?
    Current URL sample:
    http://web.mac.com/taliesin2/iWeb/Site/About%20Me.htm

No problem, you can do it right in iweb. Change the page names in the site organizer so they have no spaces. Republish and your all set.

  • Seeking simplest replacement for iWeb family website

OK, with MobileMe about to bite the dust I am seeking the simplest, free (or lowest cost) replacement for iWeb that offers the following:
    1. Ability to create web pages for major family events (wedding, births, etc.).
    2. Ability to use our purchased domain name to name the site.
    3. Ability to link to our genealogy site and other web info.
    4. Tight integration with iPhones - to import new photos and pages.
Basically, our website is an online scrapbook. I don't really want a blog to tell the world about all our recent activities; I just want a place that mainly offers photo albums and maybe some written content. I'm not interested in Facebook because I want to be able to have the site separate from Facebook.
    Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I can't see why anybody would want to pay this (or any) amount for a simple transfer. In any case, nearly all the files in a MobileMe account should be first downloaded to your Mac since most of us used it for more than just website hosting.
Unless you have a very basic site, you will have folders of assets outside of the main website folder. These need to be uploaded to the root folder on the new server and the URLs to them need to be changed in iWeb. Anybody who doesn't take the time to learn basic FTP and the server file structure is going to have even more problems with this part of the operation!
The actual files produced by iWeb don't need to be moved anyway since its just a question of publishing to the new hosting account using one of the methods shown here...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Publish-Website.html
The first two companies mentioned on this page will move the files for free for new customers...

  • Hosting for IWeb Site

I created a beatiful website using iWeb - don't get me wrong, .Mac is great, but not what I am needing to promote my business. What are my options for getting my iWeb site onto the WWW? What hosts are out there that are compatible with iWeb?

nearly every host allows you to get your site online for iweb! common ones include:

depending on your country - there might be better hosts!

  • HTML with iWeb

    Hi,
I just got the iWeb program, im trying to access the html code to add extra's to my site.
Currently I am just closing down iWeb and editing through a text program, but im wondering if there is a way to view the html within iWeb so i dont have to close everything down, etc.
Also when i do this, all changes to the html have to be after im done editing with iWeb because the changes wont load when i load my site in iWeb.
Any help would be good, thanks.

You can't view html with iWeb, and any custom html
you add via a text editor or other means will be
erased whenever you republish the page using iWeb.
It really isn't an appropriate tool for what you
want to do, at least not in this version.
That is a real BUMMER! After spending many hours over this weekend setting my site up, I need to add a bit of html at the end of my welcome page:
It is a dynamic weather report.
I figured out how to add it with a text editor, but every time the file is edited in iWeb and then published, the added code is erased! I hope there will be a way to deal with this WITHIN iWeb soon.

  • Drop Down Menus for iWeb: Will They EVER Come?

I've got several websites that I need to update, and frankly probably rebuild from scratch.
I am considering moving them to iWeb. However, the ONLY reason I have not switched over yet is the unavailability of easy WYSIWYG drop down menus for iWeb. It's safe to say that if there was a seamlessly integrated way to create these, I would have started publishing at least four different sites with iWeb...YEARS ago.
So, now, faced with the choice again, the drop down menus question is before me again.
Please understand: I know and understand the various ways they can be manually created. That's now what I'm asking.
What I'm asking is for people's opinion: What's the likelihood that Apple will ever add this functionality to iWeb itself?
If so, any likelihood of this happening soon?
Because if they don't, I then have to make a choice to go through the long and arduous task of manually creating the menus for several sites (and making sure their perfect before we "go live" with the new versions...) And I'll have to weigh whether or not I want to bother with that.
Obviously, I am intentionally asking for your conjectures, unless some of you would like to dish on stuff you know.
    Thanks in advance.

iWeb is discontinued, so the likelihood that it gets the menus you want is rather slim.
And yes, there is a seamless way to add them.

  • How to edit html in iWeb

How can I edit html in iWeb?

but info was needed on how to edit / add additional coding as no obvious way of designing a typical 'Contact Us' form included in iWeb
Then you should have said that in your topic.
And if it did not answer the question, then say so in the same topic.
Anyway, the HTML Snippet was invented for your purpose.
So find the Contact Us code, usually a form, and paste it in the HTML Snippet.

  • Is filemaker a replacement for iweb?

Am I seeing this right that filemaker has a web design tool..I downloaded a free copy of freeway but I am struggling with using it..My small business web site was on Iweb so i need to find something quickly that can replace it.  thanksmargie

FileMaker is a database creation application with the capability of creating online databases. It's no replacement for iWeb or any other web design application.
Why are you wanting to leave iWeb?  It still works and will work for a while.  If your site includes a blog with comments or a photo pages with commenting activeated those will be no longer usable when MobileMe is discontinued on June 30th. Which of the following features does your website have:
Features Unavailable When Publishing to a 3rd Party Server:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
All of these items can be replaced with 3rd party options. Also do you have photo or album pages?
Regarding web design software do you have any HTML experience?  if so the Flux might be a viable replacement for iWeb.  There are many template based website design apps.  Among them are Quick'n Easy Web Builder, Freeway Express and Rage Web Design.
However, if your website is working OK for you now any you only expect to make minor updates to it consider staying with iWeb.

I think this site may do what you want: http://issuu.com/. Roddy make a quick demo of the capability here: http://www.iwebformusicians.com/PromoPage/ISSUU.html
Another approach would be to convert each page to a jpg file (Print->PDF->Save PDF to iPhoto) and use the pages in a flash album that would have the page flip transition. Jalbum has over 100 themes/skins and should have one that might need your needs.
