Hue Saturation Luminance sliders in CR4.1

Hallo,
Having just posted problems I was having with printing that I thought were due to some aspect of my colour management policies and/or my LCD monitor when tilted, I traced back my editing to the original DNG image and discovered something. As a result i have a simple question:
1. I know that all adjustments in RAW are global - no problem. But what I want to know is this; When adjusting the luminance values of say in my case the Yellow slider, is this affecting even the yellow values in all the colours of the image? It appears so but I had assumed maybe wrongly that this particular slider and option would have only affected literally the yellow colour, and not the Yellow VALUES in the blues and greys and greens.
Have I now learned something or is this assumption also wrong.
the original problem had to do with a slightly darker print but also a slightly yellow colour cast which COULD NOT BE SEEN on my monitor even when proofing. The RGB values revealed otherwise by a lack of blue values in the RGB info palette, and its opposite, much higher Yellow values in the CMYK info palette.

Hi, as far as matching colours of images, I would never use Hue saturation, In fact The hue saturation sliders are really a very crude means of adjustment, even as a layer. I would use the APPLY IMAGE command under Image.
Ok, Jeff, I can not find post 8, i am probably stupid but I do not see how to get to post 8. As far as your question is concerned about ACR and PS differences; I have never really compared them. Apart from the fact in acr every adjustment you make is global, whereas in PS you can mask out and use layers and target areas to be adjusted. I would imagine that there would not be any fundemental difference in the two. One is manipulating th esame information in both packages. Now if you were to ask me to compare say the HSL sliders of photoserif 11 and ACR then I would choose ACR. the reason being is that PS is a professional package and Serif is not. I began with Serif.
But please let me see your first question (8) maybe I ma missing something.
Bets Regards
Chris.

  • How can I get hue, saturation & luminance visible in the Loupe?

For the life of me I can't figure how to get visible in the Loupe - Hue, Saturation, Luminance as I move the Loupe around a photo.
I can get R,G,B,L. Is there a secret to get the Hue in it? I checked preferences and even searched in Aperture Help. NO luck.
    I'm in Aperture 3.0.3
    Thanks

    It is a tad secret.
Make sure colour value is set in the Loupe menu then:
In the Adjustments inspector choose a color value option from the Adjustment Action pop-up menu (with a gear icon). HSB i smiling at you in that list
Then it'll appear as a colour value in the loupe.
BTW You'll find all this in the Displaying a Pixel Grid and Color Values section of Aperture help.

  • Hue Saturation Luminance - Galer

I am working through Galer's  Elements 8 - Maximum Performance and have had only little trouble until Project 5, Hue Saturation & Luminance.  When using the Smart Brush Tool, in the options bar there are presets in the video that are not part of the Elements 8 program.  For example, in the Options Bar drop down window there is no selection labeled MP7.  This eliminates the options there such as Darken Blues 3.  These are add on items Galer has made available as part of the Maximum Performance publication which I have been following.  He indicates that these additional options may be added to the Elements 8 program.  There is the beginning of my problem.  How do I add the features to my Elements 8 program?   Can anyone provide a protocol for this so that I may continue learning via Galer.
Also, while Galer is using the Smart Brush Tool, he is able to change his Background Layer to Luminosity.  Mine alway stays Normal.  Is there a reason  I can not make this change and does that affect the use of the program as he is able to.
    Thanks for any help.
    Bernie

Well, as far as a nuisance, like adding most things to PSE, let's just say it's not as easy as it should be. Put all three files (the .psd, xml, and thumbnail file) into C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\8.0\Photo Creations\adjustment layers. Then go to
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\8.0\Locale\en_US (this path is different if you aren’t in the United States), and delete MediaDatabase.db3 to refresh the list of presets.
I think that version of the Galer book has wrong file paths, IRCC.

  • In Photoshop CC (2014), Hue/Saturation adjustment layer properties disappear

I am running Photoshop CC (2014) under Windows 7 Professional.  The program is up to date.
Today, while editing an 8-bit image, I added a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.  Then, in the properties panel for this layer, with the on-image adjustment tool selected, I clicked a color in the image to get a range of colors whose saturation I wanted to adjust.  Next, using the saturation slider in the properties panel, I increased the saturation of this range of colors. Finally, I closed the properties panel by clicking on the double arrow in the upper right corner.
Later, I wanted to modify this adjustment layer.  I double-clicked on the layer thumbnail to reopen the properties panel, and found that, although the previous increase in saturation was still operating, the saturation slider was back at its default position, and the range of colors that I had previously established was gone.  Thus, I could not make further adjustments to this range of colors.
I then did some further experimentation:  I deleted the first Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, and created a new Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. I then again established a range of colors as above, again increased the saturation of these colors, and then again closed the properties panel by clicking on the double arrow in the upper right corner.  This time, however, when I wanted to try to modify this adjustment layer, instead of double-clicking on the layer thumbnail to reopen the properties panel, I right-clicked on the layer and then clicked on "Edit adjustment..."  This opened the properties panel, which, this time, correctly showed my original adjustments -- the saturation slider showed the positive adjustment that I had previously made, and the range of colors established earlier was still shown. But then, on a hunch, I added a Curves adjustment layer above the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.  Now, when I again opened the properties panel of the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer (by right-clicking on the layer and then clicking on "Edit adjustment..."), my previous settings were gone -- the saturation slider was at its default position and the range of colors was gone!  (But the increase in saturation was still operating.)
Thus, it appears that there is a bug in the functioning of the properties panel of the Hue/Saturation layer: In short, once you have added a further adjustment layer, you can't then go back and make changes to the properties of the Hue/Saturation layer.  I would be interested to hear if others have noticed this.  Also, is Adobe planning to address this?

OK, I am not entirely sure I have understood your post completely, but when you edit a colour range with a Hue/Sat layer, and click off and back on again, it will default to showing the RGB values, which you may not have made any adjustment to.  If you pick the previous colour from the image, or a similar colour, it _will_ show you the adjustments.  So long as your picked colour is contained within the range of the previous adjustment.
Ypu could also use the RGB drop down (actually they call it Master nowadays), and chose the colour that is closest to your previously picked colour.  I expect you are away that you can edit the colour range being operated on by dragging the four sliders on the two colour bars at the bottom of the Properties panel.
Does that make sense, or am I going in the wrong direction?

  • Photoshop Elements 6: Hue/Saturation as a basic layer?

When creating a hue/saturation layer in Photoshop Elements 6, is it possible to have it act as a basic layer, adding and removing from the selection, rather than a mask layer?

The simple method is to place your selection on a separate layer and clip the hue/saturation mask to it.
In this example I selected the sky and pushed up the saturation to really exaggerate the blue color.
    1. Make your selection
    2. Press Ctrl+J to place it on its own layer
    3. Add new adjustment layer (hue/saturation) and click OK to close the dialog
    4. Hover your mouse over the dividing line between the adjustment layer and selection layer whilst holding down the alt key. Click when you see two small connecting circle appear. A downward pointing arrow will appear to show the adjustment layer is clipped to the selection layer.
    5. Double click the thumbnail icon on the adjustment layer (not the white mask thumbnail) and that will bring back the dialog box.
    6. Now use the sliders to make your selective adjustments.

  • Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer

I am a Photoshop beginner working on a class project.  In the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer box, what number value will give me a "cool blue" for the Hue slider?  Thank you.

"Cool blue" is as specific a color as "Yummy Purple". Wikipedia took a shot at defining cool blue here:
Cobalt blue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    which it displays as this:
and your sliders in Hue/Saturation set to:
H20 S0 L34 will put you in the ballpark.
I suggest that when it comes to color spec you familiarize yourself with the Pantone Matching System, for starters.
    Good luck.

  • Replace color and hue/saturation?

Is there any real difference with using hue/saturation and replace color to change the color of an item OR is it just two ways to do the same thing?

If you did a hue/saturation change then both the blue and yellow would change according to the sliders that you use.
That would apply if you edit the Hue/Saturation’s Master (alt-2), but if the Colors are sufficiently different one could influence only the Reds (alt-3), Yellows {alt-4) etc.
And that’s naturally best done with an Adjustment Layer.

  • Changing hue/saturation

I make a selection and choose Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation and it seems the colors are completely off when I have the colorize option selected.
Should this checkbox not be selected when changing colors this way? I know that this could also be done with an adjustment layer, I am just curious why the colors seem off.
    Thanks.

If your goal is to keep a full range of colors, but skew them on the spectrum, you'll want to make sure Colorize is turned off.
Colorize works by taking the average value (pure grey) and setting it to be equivalent to your new color (in the Hue/Saturation sliders). This then gets tinted and shaded (using the whites and blacks in your document). Essentially, Colorize fakes a dutotone image (the only colors will be the one you select + black).

  • Using Hue Saturation to change color of shirt not working

In CS5, I tried to make a selection of a white shirt and used Image > Adjustment >Hue Saturation, though when I drag the Hue slider, nothing happens, only a little bit of pixels of color change. Why is this.
    Thanks.

    1. So this is simply the wrong tool to change the color?
Are you familiar with the geometric representation for the HSB- or LCH-model?
The straight line connecting white and black is the axis that’s totally neutral, so changing the Hue or the Saturation/Chroma has no effect on points located thereon.
You can still use Hue/Saturation to colorize neutrals by checking the Colorize-box.
Or create a Solid Color Layer of the intended color and set it to Blend Mode Color and use a Curves Adjustment Layer to adjust the Luminance below that.
    Edit:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSL_and_HSV
Figure 2a might be helpful in illustrating the gray axis.

  • Adding to the selection of a current hue/saturation adjustment layer?

I made a selection on a car, used a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to change that selected color, though I went and used the Magic Wand to add more to my selection and that new part of the selection is not affected by the previous Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. How is this done? Do I have to make a new Hue/Saturation adjustment layer for the added selection Using Cs5.
    Thanks.

There's selection of the color range the Hue/Saturation layer will work on.  That's controlled by the little sliders that appear when you choose, for example, "Reds".  You can do things like widen or narrow the range of colors included, as well as widen or narrow the ramps defining how much that colors near the edges of the ranges will be affected.
There's also the possibility that you defined a layer mask when making the Hue/Saturation layer, which will define which pixels in the image will be affected.  If so, you need to click on the layer mask in the Layers panel and paint on it (white to choose which parts the Hue/Saturation layer will work on, black to choose which parts not to work on).  You can, of course, paint grayscale on the layer mask to have certain pixels partially affected.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hue Saturation : Question

    Hello Forum Members:
I added 3 different Hue Saturation Layer(s), colors Red, Yellow, and Green -  split in 3, to a concrete image, in Photoshop. I am trying to get a really bright, sunny yellow color, however I can only get light yellow Hue Saturation Layer. Can anybody tell me how to adjust Hue for bright yellow (sunny) color?
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    KC

I would experiment with the Saturation sliders for intensifying the yellow colors.

  • Adjustment Layer - Hue/Saturation.

I am using Elements 10.  I am trying to change colours on an image by using Layer -New Adjustment Layer - Hue/Saturation.
The video tutorial I am using is telling me to select the 'click & drag' icon which is on the left of the Master drop down list in the New Adjustmnt Layer.
Although the image on the video shows this Icon, I cannot see one on my screen.
    Can anyone please advise?

In PSE10 there is no icon. Only three sliders and three eye droppers.

  • Hue/Saturation adjustment layer questions

    1. When selecting the  channel, like red and then boosting the saturation, does this mean that it is only boosting saturation to the reds in the image and there is no possibility of it boosting the saturation of greens or yellows that may reside in the image?
    2. I also did separate saturation boosts to the green and yellow channel. What is then the purpose of going to the Master channel and boosting the saturation to this channel after boosting the saturation of the individual red, green and blue channels?
    Thanks.

    1. To clarify what you meant by "fine tuning what colors are selected by adjusting sliders for the range at the bottom" my photo has a pink object and a person with reds in the skin. If I select the Reds drop down in the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and use the eyedropper to select just the pink object to use for my saturation boost, will it leave the reds in the person's skin alone? Is that how it works?
    2. Does it make a difference if you boost the saturation for the Master prior to adjusting the individual colors like reds, and greens? Does the order matter if you do the reds and greens first and then the master?
    Thanks.

  • CS2 Hue Saturation stopped functioning.

    Hi,
I need to use the Hue Saturation on an image and it's NOT functioning! I mean you slide the sliders and you get nothing. I've restarted PS and it's still disabled. What could be causing this?
    Thanks,
    Martin

Well I see you didn't read the link on how to ask a question so someone can give you an answer. Well from all the info you've supplied I can tell you that Your copy of CS2 is not functioning as it should and mine is.
Now if you actually read the link I posted, comprehend it, supply the info need so you can be helped and drop the attitude someone just might help you.

  • My hue/saturation filter quits working in Photoshop CS3

I keep having this issue where my hue/saturation filter just quits working.  I use that filter religiously so it has to be fixed each time it occurs.  I've only had the Adobe CS3 for 3 months and I've had to resolve this 3 times now.  Each time this has happend I've had to uninstall the entire CS3 design package and do a complete reinstall which takes almost 4 hours because my download uses the Adobe server.  My product download was purchased online so I do not have a disk but rather files that I downloaded from Adobe with product serial numbers.
I've used Adobe for years, as far back as Adobe 5, and never had such a problem!  I've checked in my preferences and have ample RAM available for the settings.  I use Dell inspirion and have 2 GB of RAM total on my system.
Can someone please advise why this would keep happening.
    Thank you very much.

Resetting your preferences is much faster than uninstalling/reinstalling, so if you haven't tried it, that would be what to do next, although it would be nice to figure out what the issue is.
To reset your preferences hold the Ctrl-Alt-Shift keys down (windows) or Ctrl-Option-Shift keys down (mac) as you start up Photoshop.  You should get a message confirming whether you want to delete the preferences file.  If resetting preferences fixes things, then you should try to remember what you've been doing, just prior to having the problem.
Once Hue/Sat sliders seem to be disabled, are they still way for all images that you open (a JPG for example), or are they just messed up for one image, but you need to work on that image so you have to fix things before doing anything else?  Hue/Sat is not a valid operation for certain modes, like Grayscale, although the menu item is disabled in this case.

Subject: Re: My hue/saturation filter quits working in Photoshop CS3
The hue/saturation filter window does open and it is not grayed out.  However, it does not allow me to do any thing to it.  I try to slide the saturation to the left or right and it does not move.  The same goes for the "Lightness" and "Hue".  I don't understand why it will work for a month or so and then just quit.  I end up rebooting my system to try and resolve but unfortunately once this occurs it seems to be stuck no matter what I do, that is until I unstall the entire program and reinstall...
So if I need to change something in my preferences, what do you suggest that would be?  I appreciate your help, thank you.
