HVX200 / 1080i24p, can FCP handle now?

I've read a few posts, but many seem to be dated prior to the latest release of FCP and I'm a bit confused.
I have some footage shot on an HVX200 at 1080i24p (not the PA mode, shot it in the wrong mode by mistake) and was wondering if FCP 6 will handle this now or if I'd need to first work with it in Cinema Tools or Raylight? One post suggested that I should get a copy of Premiere and do it that way, but I'd rather stay in a comfortable app such as FCP if I don't have to jump through hoops to import it/use it properly as 24p. I'd like to edit it in 24p to give me a more film look.

You shot 24p...you already have the film look. No need to edit it as 23.98 to get it...the camera recorded it at 29.97, but with the 24p look. So, that part is done. All you need to do now is edit it. The film look is more than frame rate...it is lighting and composition.
FCP has been able to handle that format since, like, forever. Just need to make sure that you have at least firewire 800 drives. GOOD ONES...not those MyBook things. Talking CalDigit, MaxxDigital or G-Tech here...OWC even. eSATA would be better.
No hoops, just LOG AND TRANSFER. But if you want to work with the files natively without waiting for the import to finish, there is always RAYLIGHT to bring in the footage. I prefer the MXF4QT application, as it makes the import process VERY slick, and imports all that wonderful Metadata that I usually have on my footage. But not everyone needs that.

Safari 4.0.5 can't read pdfs... it cannot be configured to open pdfs with Preview. Lemme guess: We can use only Adobe products...

S750s - can't handle high volume :(

I've had this problem for ages now, but have been too busy with work to do anything about it, but now that I've moved into my new house, I am aching to blow the roof off (metaphorically speaking)
The problem? Crank the volume on the s750s anywhere over 5 bars (Audigy 4 pro volume at 80%) the sound jerks and skips at the bass notes. Any higher and it cant even handle the trebble.
This is well annoying, I've disconnected everything, reconnected it all, done anything and everything sensible driver-wise. Reading some of the other posts about the s750s makes me think the issue is with the sub...
First off, anyone else out there with this kind of problem? Secondly, what can I do about it apart from getting a new set?

Um, maybe you have a small room? You're telling the guy he shouldn't go over that number, then why did Creative allow the volume to go that high if it can't handle it's Maybe his room is bigger OR, I go to about 5 sometimes while playing games and when it gets louder, it starts feeling more immersive. I play guitar and I like to jam with songs and I can tell you right now, I have reached the bar 7 before. My guitar amp is only on it's half setting to match volume with the speakers. If the speaker system can't handle it, they shouldn't allow it to go up that high. The S750's have been a waste of my money anyway.

Runtime Errors
Each Smart Form can trigger a number of exceptions during its execution. To limit this number of exceptions, you can bundle the occurring errors in error classes and store them in an error log in the composer. For each error, you store an internal error number and (if possible) a message from table T100 (work area, message number, message text and parameters) in addition to the error class. To each error class, you assign an exception, which means that if the recognized error teminates the form processing, the system triggers exactly this exception. When an exception occurs, the caller of the Smart Form can use predefined function modules to read the error log and then decide which reaction is appropriate in the respective error context.
Possible exceptions for the generated function module are:
- FORMATTING_ERROR
- INTERNAL_ ERROR
- SEND_ERROR
- USER_CANCELED
In addition, you can define your own exceptions.
If an error (or a warning) occurs, the system internally fills an error table. The application can now read this table as soon as the function module for the form is processed to the end. To read the table that contains all errors and warnings that occurred, call function module SSF_READ_ERRORS. The table has structure SSFERROR. The fields in the table are the number of the document within the job, the form name, an error number, a message class, a message type, a message number and four additional message variables. For some reason FCP is now making multi files when I capture called -av
I capture one clip but I get 7 files.

I don't know why this started in recent captures but it is eating up disk space as it is 7 times larger than it needs to be and only the last one works.

Is there a way to get these files to be joined together into one file easily. I capture on a FAT32 hard drive but then transfer the files onto my edit machine and would prefer to keep everything archived there as a single file.
Any programs or scripts that I can use. I have figured out that you can open each file in Quicktime and then save as a self contained file, but I was wondering if there is a better way.

Photoshop CS5 can't handle lots of text..?

Recently migrated to CS5.
Was running Photoshop CS5 just fine for a week, working mainly on images... but now that I need to work on something that has more text in it (like a graphical CV) the screen isn't reflecting the changes I'm making.
I can click inside a text box, but I'll never see the cursor. I can type, but I'll never see what I'm typing. What was there before I clicked the text box is still there. It's like the viewport's frozen.
However, if I exit the text box, zoom out and zoom in... I see the changes I made. Ditto if I move the layer around.
There's something wrong with the viewport refreshing. I even turned off OpenGL, reloaded the whole thing... and it'll only work properly for a minute or two before nothing I do in this document gets immediately displayed. I always have to move the layer around, or do the zoom trick, to see what I did.
What's even more peculiar is that this file is only 5-6 megs in size. I've worked with 6 GB (that's right, GB) files in the past week without any problems, because the text was minimal. But the program can't handle a peanut-sized file if it's got a lot of text in it. It's the weirdest thing.
Has anyone else encountered this problem, and if so, what have you done to remedy it?

Unless you can identify which of your corrupt fonts is causing the problem, we won't be able to fix it.
It might be a bug in our code, or in Windows. But it is almost certainly going to be due to a corrupt font file.
We haven't seen that particular problem, or we would have already fixed it.
So we need to know which of your fonts is corrupt and causing the problem.
Font previews are created before you show them, in the background -- a corrupt font file can cause problems when creating the previews and slow things down for a while.

Safari 3(PC) can't handle double-byte characters

I used Safari to browse a Chinese web site. However, there was a lot of BLANK SPACE coz Safari can't show the Chinese contents. Later, I noticed that Safari can't handle those html content that use non-English for the fontface name. If I change the font-face name to English(still the same Chinese font), Safari can display the content. However, it didn't use the font-face.

I am running a windows xp. It is a microsoft XP professional(5.1 build 2600)
intel celeron 1.1ghz
with a 254mb of ram( that is part of a ram card)
I am not running windows 95 it's just my pc is quite old.
I downloaded the flash player 10 archive nothing else but the 10th version and I installed the newest version it had on there.

Ok I'd like to say this now I pressumed my pc couldn't handle flash palyer 10.3 since the requirments asked ofr higher specs.
AND right before I tried to install it igot rid of my old flash palyer 10 and adobe flash activex.
After that I tried to install the program for firefox yet after I pressed run NOTHING appeared and firefox was off. I keep getting a error that says it couldn't connect or run a script or something from internet explorer.
I've been having these random script errors latly too.
Yet I have cleared up my pc and recently ran anti-malware, anti-virus, and defragmentaion scans,etc and more. (Avast piriform malwarebytes). SO every tiemi did this the program would run underprocesses but it would do absolutly NOTHING so I end up having to stop the process. Each time itry to install it it deletes it'self orsomthing as well from the file I downloaded it to though i pressume that is normal
Unless my problem lies more in the program then my pc then I'm ok.

I've been posting this question for a month now, for several times, and still getting no answer. I hope this time my luck will change ;-)
I am using a 8.1.6 database with UTF8 character set on a Win2000 machine. I have inserted some Hebrew characters into a table, and have been able to read them back properly using SQL+.
However, when I try to retrieve these values from Java, using Oracle JDBC driver 8.1.6, I always get '?'. The problem arises when I use the 'getString' method of the result set object.
What I've noticed though, is that if I call the 'getBytes' method of the result set, and create a new String instance from that data, it works fine, which makes me think maybe there is a bug in the 'getString' method.
I've seen this problem arise a dozen times in this newsgroup (the '?' problem) and it always go un-answered. I really believe Oracle should start paying more attention to non-US users - it's its biggest market ;-)

HELPPPP!!! PE7 STILLLLLL Crashing!!!! What can I do now?

I have been reading for about three days and trying everything recommended to stop PE7 from crashing. I am working with a Dell XPS M1530
Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1 Rating 5.1 Windows Exp. Index Intel (R) Core (TM)2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50GHz 4.00GB RAM 32 bit operating system. What did I leave out??? Anyway, I am using Adobe PE7 and it has been working ok up to this point. I have been experimenting with it since I got it Dec 08. It weren't so bad with the crashing until I started using a lot of effects. The project is only about 7 minutes and I am using a lot of croping and videos within a video for ex. On the timeline I have a video running in Video 1. I have muted the original sound added background music. Slowed the clip to slow motion and then I bring in another clip on Video 2. I crop the first video so they are both showing at the same time. I use several different effects and transitions throughout and it is now crashing 2-3 minutes after opening PE7 making it extremely difficult to finish the project. I need this by tommorrow. I have:
#1 Tried to re-create the Styles folder on Windows Vista:
Close Premiere Elements.
Choose Start > Documents.
Navigate to Documents\Adobe\Premiere Elements\7.0.
Rename the Styles folder to Old Styles.
Start Premiere Elements. Premiere Elements will create a new Styles folder.
I did this to eliminate problems that a damaged styles data file might have caused.
#2 Tried to use Robert's hack for creating a proxy editing environment. I did not know what I was doing so this did not work too good.
#3 Optimized Vista to squeeze all the juice from my system.
#4 Went to Windows Update and updated every available update.
#5 Downloaded the latest Quicktime.
#6 Defragmented
#7 Inserted 8gb flash and opted to increase the memory.
Nothing is working. Nothing. Nothing. Can anyone suggest anything that can help?

1) It sounds as though you are editing AVCHD. Is that the case? If so, is your project set up as an AVCHD project?
2) You say you've got the latest Windows Updates. Might be worth manually returning to the site. You should be up to at least SP2 at this point.
3) Have you tried Eelco's hack for putting more of your programming into upper RAM?

AVCHD is the hardest format to edit. In fact, even quad core processors are challenged by it. This could be why your editing goes well until you add an effect to it. It's a shame, but at least on PCs, the hardware and software has not caught up with this intensive video format. (On Macs, Final Cut software uses an intermediate codec, which makes editing this format easier.)
Also there are variations of MP4 video that Premiere Elements can not handle at all. AVCHD Lite, for instance, and video from Flip cameras. These formats are a whole different issue.

of course notepad.exe is closed again as soon as the operating system has completed the process of loading its content into memory...
And no "event" is fired when that happens, except maybe internal to the process that loaded the application to indicate that it's been loaded successfully and can now be executed.
But there's no way your Java process is ever going to receive that notification.

PT-880 NEO-LSR can't handle new memory ??

I recently decided to improve the performance of my "gaming rig" by pulling the Corsair value memory and just replaced it with Corsair twinX1024 PC3200-XL. I was impressed with the reviews and the out of the box "plug-n-frag" feature that will boot up at the timings of 2-2-2-5. Very tight timings for someone who isn't really interested in any major overclocking. The problem is that within 10 minutes of installing it on my PT-880 NEO-LSR board the system crashed. After some head scratching and continued crashes, I decided it was the new memory. The Corsair value memory never had an issue in dual channel mode. So I ended up running MEMtest86 on it, and it passed. So back to square one again. Well, after alot of trial and error I decided to go in the BIOS and turned off "auto by SPD" and through lots of experimenting , have it now stable with the following settings : 2-2-3-6 @2.75v. Well, It's very stable now with no crashes for 2 days. So can anyone tell me why this board can't handle the default settings of this memory? Are the extremely tight timings too much for this board? I really want to get what I paid for, and am open to suggestions to make it run stable at the advertised 2-2-2-5. If it helps, my system is as follows: MSI PT-880 NEO-LSR w/ latest BIOS flash v1.9 (I think thats the number), P-4 3.2ghz (Northwood), thermaltake silent Purepower 420watt PSU, Seagate 120gb. SATA HD, Gainward Golden Sample Geforce 6800 GT (overclocked), Creative Audigy2 soundcard, lite-on 52x CD/DVD rom combo , and lite-on 8x DVD burner drive. I built this system myself, but until now have never had to manually set timings to get it to run (unless overclocking). Maybe I'm finding out why there are $70.00 Mobo's and $200.00 mobos ? NovJoe, Just wanted to let you know that Corsair was good enough to respond to me and gave me a few "tweaks" they wanted to see me try. Although on this Mobo I can see no where to set the burst length to 8 as they asked, and for some reason the The SDRAM Active to Precharge (tRAS) can only be manually set down to 6T and not 5T as they wanted. I ended up resetting everything back to "auto by SPD" (reluctantly awaiting the big crash again on reboot). Much to my amazement it has been running for about 2hrs. now without a crash on the same auto settings it refused to run at 2 days ago when I installed it. Really strange huh? So being the memory newb that I am.....how can I view what it's actually running the timings at presently under auto settings?? Thanks- Herb

How does FCP handle 23.98 DV Files?

Hi All,
Has anyone Edited using the DV-NTSC 24P (23.98fps) Easy Setup?
1) How does FCP handle this video connected to a DV Converter Box like the Canopus ADVC-110?
2) Does it actually play at 23.98fps on a monitor connected to the DV Converter Box?
3) Does it get converted to 29.97fps somewhere in the process before it gets displayed?
4) is it displayed at 29.97fps or is it really being displayed at 23.98fps?
these are things that I am not sure of.

*DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE:*
One of our main Clients Disney, is migrating to a Tapeless Workflow based on ProRes HQ 422 @ 23.98fps. From here on out, they will only send us ProRes HQ 422 1920x1080 files @ 23.98fps and they want us to Edit every project we work on for them @ 23.98fps. At the moment, it doesn't sound like they care if we Edit our projects in ProRes HD or some SD format, but the important thing to them is that we edit @ 23.98fps.
PROBLEM:
Our facility doesn't have the infrastructure to support 25 machines accessing ProRes HQ 422 files. Our facility was built to support DV NTSC @ 29.97fps and we have been working this way fairly well, for a number of years.
SOLUTION:
I am trying to find a way to continue to us our current equipment and satisfy Disney's request to work on all their projects at 23.98fps, starting from 1920x1080 ProRes HQ 422 files @ 23.98fps. So, it was my hope to be able to take the 23.98fps ProRes files and export them to 23.98fps DV NTSC. This way we wouldn't have to reconfigure our entire Facility (which would cost a couple hundred Thousand dollars).
My approach was to:
1) Use Media Manager to render a new DV NTSC file at 23.98fps, which it does pretty well for the most part. It keeps the Timecode consistent between the two files (very important), but doesn't allow you to Letterbox the 16x9 video in the 4x3 frame, it just stretches it to fill the entire 4x3 frame (not so good).
2) Then import the newly created DV NTSC 23.98fps file into a FCP Project based on the DV NTSC 24(p) 23.98fps EASY SETUP. Which works well. No problems there.
3) Then Play the file in FCP out through a Firewire based Canopus ADVC-110 DV Converter connected to a SD Sony Monitor. This seemed to worked fine also.
The fact that it plays is great!!!! But, that brings up the question, is it really playing a 23.98fps?
My understanding of Standard Definition and specifically DV NTSC, is that it can only be displayed at 29.97fps, it doesn't support 23.98fps natively. So the fact that it played when I tested it got me thinking that I may be missing something here and DV NTSC and other SD equipment (like the Sony SD Monitor) can playback/support 23.98fps SD video. But that goes against everything I know up to this point!!!
Have I been wrong all this time?
1) Can SD Video and DV NTSC Video be displayed at 23.98fps?
2) Or is it getting converted to 29.97fps somewhere in the process before it is getting displayed?
3) If it is getting converted back to 29.97fps, then where is it getting converted, FCP or in the DV Converter Box?
I am sorry I went a little long on this email, but it is a problem that will have great influence on they way we work for a couple of years to come!!

Can FDM handle more than one year at a time?

I'm trying to load a multi-load file through FDM with the target being an Essbase cube and the source being a text file. The file is for 36 months which crosses 3 years. The problem is Oracle support is saying FDM can only handle one calendar year at a time and we need to load 3 separate files.
The file imports and validates ok. And the export only pushes data to the first year '2010' but it doesn't error out.
Any ideas?

If you use an excel file as the source, you can load all 36 periods.
You can also modify the adaptor to support this action but I would caution you that doing so will cause support to no longer support your application without requiring you to import a non customized adaptor. This also has consequences for when upgrading.
Let me add, FDM support is the best in the business. I have never had a situation where what they told me was incorrect. What you are trying to accomplish would be a custom solution that should be implemented by an experienced FDM resource that understands the impact of the customization.
