Hw can I connect a working Power PC 6100 to anoter Mac to erase the drive?

Hi,
I have an old Power PC 6100 that appears to be in good working order, it powers up OK, CD drawer opens etc. I have the keyboard and mouse but no monitor. I now need to empty the loft so will sell it, but I can't recall if I wiped the drive 10 years ago when I bought a 9600!
Is there away to connect the drive to a laptop or other Mac. I have a G5 and G4, both with LCD screens and a G4 iBook and a new Intel G5 laptop.
Any ideas appreciated. Thanks,
Beth

Beth,
The cable you need is available from a recycler but you will still be working blind without the right software/hardware support. Not an impossible task but a highly academic exercise.
I bought five of the monitor adapters by the pound last time I was in Seattle. There is a Washington State University Surplus Store sale tomorrow. They will have several adapters in a cabinet for $5 apiece. Yes they are cheap but then you are spending good money after bad. Then you have to buy another adapter to go from a standard Mac monitor connector to VGA. Boeing Surplus in Renton, Washington sells them for fifty cents apiece.
If you are willing to make ten trips to Goodwill or other thrift stores you can find an external SCSI CD-ROM drive, pull out the drive and replace it with the hard drive from your 6100. Then you have to get the right SCSI cable to go from the external drive to the card in the G4. That cable might be $1 or $5 at the computer recycler in Seattle where I make my bulk junk purchases.
Of all the used Mac computers out there, only the LC case ranks higher on the do not save list. They do make good frisbees. If you can find a Mac user group with other insane people like us who have 30 or more of all of the nearly worthless items mentioned above, including 15 6100s that Goodwill could not even auction off for $2.50 you will find a five minute fix to your computer challenge.
Your request has a lot of simple solutions from those who are well endowed with computational equipment but are societally insane. One individual in Chicago wanted to sell a Mac SE at a yard sale. They stated that the asking price for the computer would be $15. Someone in this forum advised her to go to Radio Shack and buy a new PRAM battery which she did. The new battery solved the date problem in the computer and it ran just fine. Only one problem. The battery cost $15. The computer with a correct internal clock was sold for $15.
That reminds me of lawyers who can give an answerer that is factually accurate, but totally worthless. Now who really is insane?
How much time and money do you want to spend on this project? Does your life have meaning? Think of the hours of enjoyment you will get from listening to your wind chimes, knowing that your data is safe. Then again, can aliens read the messages blowing in the wind? Maybe none of us are safe.

You may need to hold the sleep/wake button and the home button until the apple logo appears. Or anther thing you can try is draining the battery until the battery is dead. That's what i tried and worked. You may need to do those things more than 2 times. OH anther thing is you can try connecting you ipod to your computer and see if it appears on itunes. If those don't work you can send it to apple. So that's what helped me I hope I answered your question.

Accordign to the artcle below, it looks like you have done all the troubleshooting steps and your next step may be to contact Apple Support.

  • I can't open my work web site it lets me go right to the login page and won't open how can I fix this

I can't open my work web site it let's me go to the login page then it won't go any further how do I fix this

To see whether this problem is caused by the new HTML5 parser feature in Firefox 4, you can turn it off like this:
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the filter box, type or paste '''html5''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Double-click '''html5.parser.enable''' to toggle it to false (it will turn bold).
Then return to your work site and reload the page.
Does that make any difference? If so, you can leave it that way. If not, you might as well switch it back (double-click that preference again to toggle it back to true.)
If not, and you need to roll back, here's the process:
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, download and save Firefox 3.6 to your desktop for future installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
    Close Firefox 4.
You could install Firefox 3.6 over it (many have reported success) or you could uninstall Firefox first. If you uninstall, do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
Unless you have installed an incompatible add-on, Firefox 3.6 should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.
Note: I haven't actually tried this myself!

  • I am planning on recycling an old iMac and Powerbook.  However, the display on the iMac is so messed up I can't read anything and the Powerbook is unusable (no power) so what do I do about erasing the hardrives for security?

I've been reading up on how to clean your hard drive so personal information can't be accessed, but if you can't get to your hard drive to clean it up, what are you supposed to do?  My town is offering an electronics recycling and I was hoping to drop off my old iMac and Powerbook.   I can turn the iMac on, but the display is really bad and almost unreadable.  The Powerbook is completely dead.   Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Since both computers have operational problems, I'd suggest removing the hard drives from them.  That way, you'll have possession of the drives and their data.  Considering their age, I doubt that the recycling program will attempt to repair these computers for donation to needy parties, but if you thought so, you could buy a $15 adapter that would let you connect the bare drive to a USB port on your functioning computer.  Once connected, you could erase the drives and reinstall them.  You didn't indicate which iMac you have, but if it's a G3 model, this Macworld article has illustrated directions for hardware upgrades, which would show you how to remove the hard drive.  If your iMac is a G3 (400 MHz or faster) with the additional VGA port concealed under the plastic door on the rear of its underside, you could connect a VGA display and attempt setting up video mirroring.  Once done, you could wipe the drive, while using the connected display to navigate through the procedure.  This would eliminate the need to open the bottom of the housing, to access the hard drive for removal.  As for the PowerBook, you could post a topic in its specific Forum (depending on the model) and request directions for hard drive removal.  Post back as to your preferred option, if you have any questions regarding it.

  • I have had my iMac for 55 days now and twice I had to power off/on and then It does not power up correctly.  I verified my disk and found errors that could not be repaired.  I erased the drive and restored system back to the previous day.

I have had my iMac for 55 days now and twice I had to power off/on and then It does not power up correctly.  I verified my disk and found errors that could not be repaired (errors were associated with boot drive)  I erased the drive and restored system back to the previous day.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support and let them deal with it. Allen's already recommended an Apple repair station visit. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you might be eligible for an onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine (depends on where you're located).  BTW, the AppleCare Protection Plan's the best warranty policy available for desktop machines. Get it if you don't have it before contacting Apple.

  • Can't connect to work VPN

    Hi,
I've read through some previous posts, but haven't had luck connecting to the corporate VPN at work.  I can sucessfully connect using a mobile wireless dongle (that uses the mobile telephony network) connected to my computer.  I tested this to make sure everything works.  Unfortaunately i cannot conect to work VPN server via my wireless LAN at home.
I'm using WRT54G2 linksys wireless router and have turned on the VPN options.
I can ping the VPN server, but I can't connect.  I think it fails to authenicate, keeps trying, and I just have to cancel it after a few minutes.
Any ideas?   Is it the router or could it be my service provider (iinet) that block the VPN connection somehow?
    Thanks
    Tim
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I tried connecting (with an ethernet cable) directly to the modem and I have the same problem.
I can still ping the VPN server at work, and I can access the internet fine except the VPN connection.  It fails to connect to the VPN server and eventually times out.  I get an error "VPN server failed to respond".  I'm using Nortel VPN Client to connect (everything was installed and configured by my work IT).
I've asked by ISP (iinet)  to open port 500udp (which is what my work IT guys suggested).  I haven't heard back from my ISP yet.
I'll let you know if it works after I hear back from my ISP.  Fingers crossed...

  • Can't connect to work through VPN.

I have the following: Router: Linksys WRT54GS v.4 + latest firmware VPN Software: Cisco VPN Client 4.8.02.0010 Cable Internet provider: Comcast The VPN client works fine if I connect using a Sprint air card, so that part is working. I just can't connect through my home router. Any advice? I'm stumped. Thanks in advance, John Duke

access the router using http://192.168.1.1 . the default password is admin .. go to the "applications and gaming" tab and click on "port trigerring" subtab ... enter ports 1723,50,500,443-447,43-47,10000-10001 .
if this does not make any difference...try upgrading / reflashing the router's firmware and check whether it makes any difference ..

  • Can't connect at work

I plug my iPod into my work Windows XP machine. iTunes comes up and it sees my iPod, but no music is on my windows machine, only on my iPod. So I try to transfer songs to my machine - hoping to transfer all my songs, videos, and everything.
But nothing transfers. The 6 songs that I have purchased come up in the expanded error window as being not authorized for this computer.
Then I try to signon the store. I signon and it tells me that it needs to update security info. I let it take me to the Apple page, where I log in just fine. I can't find anyplace there to update my security.
Every day I go through this process, trying to find out what I'm missing.
    1. How do I tell iTunes that this is one of my authorized computers?
    2. How do I copy all of my media to my work computer?
    3. How do I update my security in the store on my work computer?
    4. How do I use the Store at either home or work, allowing songs that I purchase either place to go to my iPod and each other computer?

    1. How do I tell iTunes that this is one of my
    authorized computers?
Play one of the tracks or use the Authorize Computer
command under the Store menu in iTunes. This presumes
that your work LAN isn't blocking access to the
    iTunes Store.
I've always just tried the 2nd step. This time, I played a track first - it didn't change anything, when I authorize or sign on, it takes me to the Apple "My Info" page where I expect I need to do something, but I haven't been able to figure out what. I keep searching every time, and change something or another from my signon.
    2. How do I copy all of my media to my work
    computer?
iTunes: How to copy music between authorized
    computers
That might be useful once I have figured out how to authorize my computer.
Though it refers to purchased music, it applies to
all your content. And since you happen to also own an
    iPod:
How to use your iPod to move your music to a new
    computer
    3. How do I update my security in the store on my
    work computer?
It's unnecessary. The security information is keyed
to your account, not your computer.
Whenever I try to authorize my account, it sends me to the "My Info" to update my security information. This may not be necessary, but my account is not getting authorized anyway.
    4. How do I use the Store at either home or work,
allowing songs that I purchase either place to go to
my iPod and each other computer?
    See #2.
    Forum Tip: Since you're
new here, you've probably not discovered the Search
feature available on every Discussions page, but next
time, it might save you time (and everyone else from
having to answer the same question multiple times) if
you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the
relevant forums, in the User Tips Library and in the Apple Knowledge
Base before you post a question.
    Regards.
I left out a step of my process - that is searching everywhere for the reason I can't authorize. Well, obviously not everywhere - because I haven't searched the right place, or I would have found the solution to my problem.

  • How can I connect my guitar to ipad2 to create tracks in GarageBand at the best quality leveks

How can I connect my electric guitar to ipad2 and GarageBand to ensure best quality recordings

The analog input of the iOS devices is horrible. I have no idea why but there is horrendous crosstalk between the input and the output. I'm a guitar player and I've been fighting with this since I first purchased my iPad. I also do podcasting.
The cleanest input is obtained by using either the camera kit USB and a compatible device or a unit that specifically utilizes the 50 pin connector.
It also seems like with each iOS update Apple messes with the current available at the 50pin connector so compatible units may become not so compatible. I have used the ART dual pre successfully until this last OS update and now the power supply seems to be an issue.
There is a Griffin USB audio device that works well. I don't have the name handy.

  • Can't connect remote PC with Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac after using a new router

I'm using a Windows 8.1 computer as a HTPC to download files and I set it logins automatically and I just need to press the power button then use RD for Mac to control the HTPC without extra monitor, keyboard...
Here is the problem: After I took my Mac and HTPC to another place, I can't connect it with new router now. (I change the PC name to new local IP, nothing else changed)
    It shows on screen that:
Unable to connect to remote PC. Please verify Remote Desktop is enabled, the remote PC is turned on and available on the network, and then try again.
I can use shared disk drive of the HTPC on my Mac so I know the connection works.
