Hyper-v 2012 R2 Live migration issue in 2003 Domain function Level

hi Team ,
i recently build 2012 R2 Hyper-v Cluster with three node. Everrything working fine with out any issue . Cluster working also fine. Later i came across one issue when tried to Live migration virtual machine from one host to another . it failed all the time
while quick migration is working . i gone through few articles and find it is known issue with hyper-v 2012 R2 where domain functional level is set to 2003 . although they have provided Hotfix but no solution.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2838043
Please let me know if any one face similar issue and able to resolve by any hotfix. My host are updated .
Thanks

  • SCSM 2012 with 2003 domain functional level supported?

    All,
I am running SCCM 2007. Now I need to install Service Manager 2012SP1. Domain functional level is 2003 with 2008 DC.
will this allow me to install SCSM 2012SP1 with full features? or will it be reduced functionality?
will there be any schema extension when I install SCSM 2012? pleas note we already have SCCM 2007 running.
can I upgrade SCCM 2007 to SCCM 2012?
it would be helpful if you could share some link about whether its possible or not.
    Thanks.
    KailashC

    Thomas,
Thanks for your response. Can I do a direct upgrade SCCM 2007 SP3 to SCCM 2012 or do I need to plan a migration? I mean fresh install SCCM 2012 and then migrate the data over ?
    Thanks.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 - live migration dynamic memory issue

    Hi..
we use a two node hyper-v cluster.
On each node running 5 vm that shared the 64GB system memory.
The vms are configured to use dynamic memory. The sum of the startup (min) memory of the 10 vms are currently 50 GB.
    So now our problem:
If we try to drain roles on node A for maintenance purpose two vms are still on node A because they wasted currently each 25GB memory and so on node B is not enough free memory to host this vms.
    That sounds logical
But as all vms configured to use dynamic memory they should shrink their memory to get enough space for all vms? If we shutdown all vms, move it to one node, then everything works fine.
Is it by design that live migration do not trigger the vm to shrink their memory?
    Best regards, Alexander Zirbes

    Hi Alexander,
Dynamic memory means that memory can increase or decrease based on the demand of the VM, not based on the load of the Hyper-V host. If the gust OS of VM dont need that much memory, memory will be released. I dont think live migration has any role shrinking
the allocated memory of a VM.
Since you are using two node cluster, you should only load 50% resourses on each host so that incase of a failure of second node, the first node can have all the VMs.
This calculation will become more effective if you have more nodes. I am having a  six node cluster and I load each host upto 80% so that in case of a single node failure, the VMs can be split on other five nodes without issues.

  • Windows 2012 root certification authority in a 2003 Domain/ Forest level

    Hello,
We are currently on Windows 2003 Domain & Forest Functional Level. Our Root CA is also currently on Windows 2003 DC.
If  we have to setup a new Root/Issuing CA ( not exporting the current 2003 CA cert) on Windows 2012 R2 servers,   is it then mandatory to first upgrade Domain & Forest levels to 2012 R2 ?  Can we have  a PKI infrastructure with
Enterprise CA's on a Windows 2012 Platform but the Domain/Forest levels  still on 2003 level ?   i understand it will be good to have everything on 2012 R2 , but can a mix of 2003 domain level  and 2012 CA  work ?

    Hi,
Look at below tread it might help:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/fa8cac92-0f71-426c-ac95-e89e90e1c8d1/certificate-authority-and-forestdomain-functional-level?forum=winserversecurity
Basically the answer is yes you can have  CA on 2012 R2 and DFL/FFL still on 2003.

  • Existing 2003 forest functional level -- 2012 forest functional level in production environment?

    Hello experts!
A quick question if it can be one:
Is it possible to raise a forest functional level from 2003 to 2012 in a production environment (only 2003 DCs with existing roles to only 2012 DCs)?  If so, is there a standard implementation of the upgrade process
(migration of roles, migration tools, etc.)?
    many thanks!
    David

    hi,
    Thanks for posting.
Sorry i don't know if i am understanding your question. Are you talking about upgrading your DC's in your current forest to 2012 then raising the functional level?
If so, first of all you can only raise the forest and domain functional levels when all DC's in the forest and domain are at 2012 or higher.
To get your domain unto 2012 DC's there are a couple of paths you can adopt, but generally the simplest is:
    1. Introduce your first 2012 / 2012 R2 DC into your existing domain, this will extend the schema with the additional attributes that are required to 2012 - this is an automatic process during promotion of your first 2012 DC.
    2. Go through and start replacing your existing domain controllers. You don't normally do an inlace upgrade, the preferred method would be to use different hardware, built up the new DC to replace your existing one, then demote the existing one - keep going
through this process until all your DC's are 2012.
NB: which ever DC(s) currently holds the FSMO roles you will need to transfer these to one of your new 2012 DC's before you decommission that one.
if i've got what you were asking wrong, please let me know, otherwise hopefully this helps.

  • Domain Functional Level: 2008 R2 to 2012 R2

My current forest and domain functional levels are 2008 R2. I know I can safely upgrade the functional levels in most cases, but I want to specifically know with regards to Lync.
Our entire environment, including Lync, is running on Windows Server 2012 R2. (We have no domain joined clients.)
Can I safely raise the forest and domain functional levels to 2012 R2 without impacting Lync?

you can easily upgrade the funtional level without any issues since you have all the Domain Controllers on Win server 2008R2.

  • What is the effect if I Raise my domain functional level to Windows Server 2012 R2 ?

    Hi,
    my current servers:
Domain Controllers= Windows Server 2012 R2 (current domain functional level is windows 2008 R2)
    Mail servers= Exchange 2010 SP3 on Windows 2008 R2
    Lync= Lync 2010 on Windows server 2008 R2
What is the effect if I Raise my domain functional level to Windows Server 2012 R2 ?
I am very worried about Exchange & Lync if we do this action
    please advice

Do not raise the forest functional level higher if you have or will have any domain controllers running
an earlier version of Windows Server , which is (windows Nt4.0,  Window 2000 or windows 2003)
but as a matter of fact I dont see any of those in your network so you can easily upgrade the funtional level without any issues

  • Migrating from 2003 domain/forest level to 2008R2 with all DC's at 2008R2 and 2 other Domain External and Forest Trusts

Is there anything that needs to be done or considered when migrating from 2003 domain/forest level to 2008R2 with all DC's at 2008R2 with 2 other 2003 separate Domain incoming
and outgoing Trusts, one Trust that is a Forest Trust and the other is an External Trust? Is there any chance or risks that doing this upgrade will break either one of these Trust relationships? Some of the user accounts with SID history have been migrated
from both Domain Trusts to our domain. Any chance that this upgrade will break these relationships for users that are using SID history for access to folders and files in their old Domains? If so what can be done to protect these trusts and SID history, prior
to moving the Domain to 2008R2

    Hi,
    Based on my knowledge,
the Upgrade of the function level do not affect the trust relationship.
Besides, before you upgrade the Functional Level,
verify that all DCs in the domain are, at a minimum, at the OS version to which you will raise the functional level.
Once the Functional Level has been upgraded, new DCs on running on downlevel versions of Windows Server cannot be added to the domain or forest.

  • Hyper V Lab and Live Migration

    Hi Guys,
I have 2 Hyper V hosts I am setting up in a lab environment. Initially, I successfully setup a 2 node cluster with CSVs which allowed me to do Live Migrations.
The problem I have is my shared storage is a bit of a cheat as I have one disk assigned in each host and each host has starwinds virtual SAN installed. The hostA has an iscsi connection to hostB storage and visa versa.
The issue this causes is when the hosts shutdown (because this is a lab its only on when required), the cluster is in a mess when it starts up eg VMs missing etc. I can recover from it but it takes time. I tinkered with the HA settings and the VM settings
so they restarted/ didnt restart etc but with no success.
My question is can I use something like SMB3 shared storage on one of the hosts to perform live migrations but without a full on cluster? I know I can do Shared Nothing Live Migrations but this takes time.
Any ideas on a better solution (rather than actually buying proper shared storage ;-) ) Or if shared storage is the only option to do this cleanly, what would people recommend bearing in mind I have SSDs in the hyper V hosts.
    Hope all that makes sense

    Hi Sir,
    >>I have 2 Hyper V hosts I am setting up in a lab environment. Initially, I successfully setup a 2 node cluster with CSVs which allowed me to do Live Migrations.
As you mentioned , you have 2 hyper-v host and use starwind to provide ISCSI target (this is same as my first lab environment ) , then I realized that I need one or more host to simulate more production scenario .
But ,if you have more physical computers you may try other's progects .

  • SCVMM Live migration issue

    Hi all,
    I have a SCVMM 2012 R2 on prod with a Hyper-V Host cluster having 4 nodes.
I am trying to live migrate hosts from one server to another all the virtual machine are having static IP, the migration is successful but after the migration i am getting this error :-
    Error (23753)
The virtual machine or tier load balancer configuration requires an IP pool and there are no appropriate IP pools accessible from the host.
    Recommended Action
Select a host with access to an appropriate IP pool and try the operation again.
I searched & found this KB related to the issue - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2915463
but is there any other way to stop this error from reoccurring without creating an IP pool as i am having a DHCP in my network.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks,
    Pranay.

    Hi Pranay,
SCVMM has been engineered to require at least one IP pool to be configured as part of the SDN. The only way I have been able to stop this error for customers that have static assigned IP addresses on all their servers was to create a single IP
Pool against one of the logical networks and fill it with an IP range that is not in use i.e. 10.10.10.0/24.
Additionally depending on the number of servers you have, you could assign them all to a single IP pool with the correct IP range then statically assign the correct address to them from within the VM config.
Its not a great solution, but I have used the first option which will remove the error when LM VMs.
    Kind Regards Michael

  • Server 2012 r2 live migration fails with hardware error

Hello all, we just upgraded one of our hyper v hosts from server 2012 to server 2012 r2; previously we had live replication setup between it and another box on the network which was also running server 2012. After installing server 2012 r2 when a live migration
is attempted we get the message:
"The virtual machine cannot be moved to the destination computer. The hardware on the destination computer is not compatible with the hardware requirements of this virtual machine. Virtual machine migration failed at migration source."
The servers in question are both dell, currently we have a poweredge r910 running server 2012 and a poweredge r900 running server 2012 r2. The section under processor for "migrate to a physical computer using a different processor" is already checked
and this same vm was successfully being live replicated before the upgrade to server 2012 r2. What would have changed around hardware requirements?
We are migrating from server 2012 on the poweredge r910 to server 2012 r2 on the poweredge r900. Also When I say this was an upgrade, we did a full re install and wiped out the installation of server 2012 and installed server 2012 r2, this was not an upgrade
    installation.

The only cause I’ve seen so far is virtual switches being named differently. I do remember that one of our VMs didn’t move, but we simply bypassed this problem, using one-time backup (VeeamZIP, more specifically).
If it’s one-time operation you can use the same procedure for the VMs in question -> backup and restore them at new server.
    Kind regards, Leonardo.

  • Hyper-V Failover Cluster Live migration over Virtual Adapter

    Hello,
Currently we have a test environment 3 HyperHost wich have 2 Nic teams.  LAN team and team Live/Mngt.
In Hyper-V we created a Virtual Switch (Wich is Nic team Live/Mngt)
We want to seperate the Mngt and live with Vlans. To do this we created 2 virtual adapters. Mngt and Live, assigned ip adresses and 2 vlans(Mngt 10, Live 20)
Now here is our problem: In Failover cluster you cannot select the Virtual Adapter(live). Only the Virtual Switch wich both are on. Meaning live migration simple uses the vSwitch instead of the Virtual adapter.
Either its not possible to seperate Live migration with a Vlan this way or maybe there are Powershell commands to add Live migration to a Virtual adapter?
    Greetings Selmer

It can be done in PowerShell but it's not intuitive.
In Failover Cluster Manager, right-click Networks and you'll find this:
Click Live Migration Settings and you'll find this:
Checked networks are allowed to carry traffic. Networks higher in the list are preferred.

  • Identity Management for UNIX (aka Windows Services for Unix) Adding 2012 DC to a prep'd 2003 domain.

We have been successfully using Windows Services for Unix on a 2003 domain for passwd and group maps.
I prep'd the domain to allow a 2012 R2 server to be added and then added the IdMU role/feature on this new 2012R2 DC. Now the passwd map is still OK but the group map now shows full usernames rather than short names.
i.e. what DID show with "ypcat group" as ...
    "infra-shared::65550:gfer,jhug,shig", now shows as
    "infra-shared::65550:Garry Ferguson,Jason Hughes,Steve Higgins"
and so is not usable. I have had to revert to local /etc/group files on all our unix machines!!
    Help/comments would be really appreciated!

    Hi Gaz Ferg,
SFU 3.5 is used to installed on windows 2003 and windows XP. SFU 3.5 cannot used on Windows 2012, that makes customer cannot user NFS and user name Mapping services on Windows
2012.  From windows 2003 R2, NFS is a build-in component in OS, we need to add Roles/Features to use NFS.
    1. What is change in 2012R2
IDMU component, which was used to authenticate Linux users has been removed. Now a Windows server cannot play role of NIS Master server.
Passwords cannot sync to the Unix Machines. Maps can not sync between Windows and Unix computers.
    2. What has not change in 2012R2
Following methods to authenticate and map a Unix user to Window user are available:-
    Active Directory
Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS)
    Username Mapping Protocol store (MS-UNMP
    Local passwd and group files
Unmapped UNIX Username Access (UUUA) (applies to Server for NFS using AUTH_SYS only)
