Hyperlink character options in InDesign

I am creating hyperlinks in InDesign and do not have any options available under the "character options" box.  It just lists [none] with no options in the drop down menu. My hyperlinks WORK but do not appear in either preview mode or .pdf output with formatting that indicate the text is a hyperlink.  The "hand button" will appear if you hover over it, but you wouldn't know to do that because it just looks like any other text--no blue underline, for example.  I have selected the text as "text" and not as the "text frame."  Help is greatly appreciated.

You have to create one or more Character Styles to populate that menu.
Format some text the way you want your hyperlinks to look, (color, underline, etc.). With your newly formatted text selected, go to the Character Styles panel (if it's not visible, press Shift+F11), and choose New Character Style from the panel menu. Give it a name like "hyperlink" and click OK.
Now, when you create or edit hyperlinked text, your Character Styles menu will include the character style you created, in addition to [None].

  • How do I add adobe Acrobat as a printer option in InDesign?

    I purchased a new computer (MAC Book Pro) and am working from Adobe CC. I have the option in both chrome and word and I've always had the option in InDesign before so I am not sure how to add it. I have the Postscript option but I would like the ablility to print directly to PDF for those times where it doesn't want to export. - Thanks

    Thanks for your response Steve, but Spier is correct I'm looking to add it as a print driver. I can export to pdf fine but sometimes when that isn't working or if I want the file to be compressed further I do File>Print and chose a printer, usually there is an option for Adobe PDF but the only option I currently have is Postscript. Looks like it was taken away. Thanks everyone!

  • Output generation options in InDesign server... generate SWF without bytecode

    Hi,
    We have a server-side InDesign application to generate SWF and JPEG and PDF assets based on a number of IDD files - generated and manually built.
    The issue is, we are trying to move to an iOS supported product where SWF loading is restricted and default, generated SWF from InDesign contains a rake of unused and unwanted ActionScript that has no relevance to our application but which is also likely to complicate or block app approval.
    So... I need to find some options here.
    Can anybody comment on the feasibility of any of the following;
    1. Modify SWF generation to generate _without_ the InDesign ActionScript (we don't need it... we just need the display assets that InDesign creates)
    2. Generate a lossless PNG output on a transparent background (needs to be lossless to support colourisation, needs to be a transparent background as moving from SWF would mean the inability to remove the big white rectangle it always puts in a SWF)
    3. Generate a PDF in a format that can be manipulated to provide us access to individual display assets within an AIR / Flex app
    Thanks in advance,
    G

    PS: Yes, I am aware of the export with and without interactive media settings, but they don't seem to make any difference whatsoever to the SWF as it still includes a rake of unneeded ActionScript (including a wide range of fl.video code for some bizarre reason...).
    I have just found some export as PNG options in InDesign 6, but the server is still on an older version of InDesign (4, I think) do you know when the export as PNG feature was introduced? I have been assured that we can't generate PNG with the current setup... though will dig a bit deeper to check.

  • Retain the hyperlinks of pdf in indesign

    Hi
    When i import the PDf which has hyperlinks, into Indesign all the hyperlinks are lost. Can we have any way to retain the hyperlinks of pdf in indesign.
    Help me!
    Thanks
    Selva

    No. Because InDesign and any other program that places PDF files can only read the layer of the page description, not the interactivity layer which contains the hyperlinks. Sorry.

  • What does the "Next to Character" option do in a template?

    Hi,
    It's not clear what the "Next to Character" option does when set in a template for the Dialogue style.
    I am assuming that it should allow for the first line of dialogue to start on the same line as the Character.
    If this is the case, I don't think it works.
    Please could someone explain what this feature is supposed to do?
    I want to use Story but need to be able to format my script in BBC Radio style which has dialogue starting on same line as the character.
    Kind regards
    Mark

    Hi Sunny,
    Thanks for your reply.
    I think the current label for this feature could be better explained as "number next to character".
    Thanks for prioritizing the new feature though. That will be useful for a number of projects I am about to start.
    Will it be possible to create a template now to start with and apply a new template with the new feature at a later date once implemented?
    Cheers
    Mark

  • Is Framemaker a better option than InDesign for footnote-intensive reports?

    We currently used InDesign to layout our reports and briefings, and are exploring it's XML capabilities with a view to output in multiple formats: high-res PDFs, web pages within our CMS, and e-Pubs. We are unable to tag our hyperlinked footnotes for XML output in InDesign, and wondered if Framemaker would be a better tool. Our layouts are in colour, in a 2-column format, contain charts and tables and occasional exhibits, and we adhere to a strict template with both paragraph and character styles.
    Any direction or insights would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Andrea

    Andrea,
    Your sample does not look like being »foot-intensive«, I only find two footnotes. And those will not be a problem for FrameMaker.
    For 2-column text layout FrameMaker (as InDesign) gives you the option to create one text frame set to have two columns, or create two connected text frames, each of them one column. To keep the footnote in the original column, you would use the latter method. More information can be found in the online help:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WS6C3D24E6-2965-48bb-B6CF-50D1439AEB01.html
    Regarding other elements of the sample pages I don’t see any stumbling blocks. Just be aware that the general approach to layout, and especially when using XML-structured documents, is completely different from InDesign. With InDesign you just move all the frames wherever and whenever you want. With FrameMaker you plan ahead, create master pages and paragraph styles and then follow this original design. Creating layout changes »on the fly« is just not the way you work in FrameMaker. But this limitation is the reason for a higher layout consistency.

  • Cross reference or hyperlinking not working for InDesign CS5 Book to ePub

    I cannot get hyperlinks or cross reference links to work when generating an ePub from InDesign CS5. (7.0.0.355, Mac OS 10.6.2)
    Here's how to recreate a simple test demonstrating the issue.
    1. Create a new InDesign Book (File -> New -> Book)
    2. Create document one (File -> New -> Document)
    3. Create a text box and type "Table of Contents"
    4. Create document two (File -> New -> Document)
    5. Create a text box in it and type "Story One"
    6. Create a new paragraph style and assign it to the Story One text
    7. Save document 2. I just kept the name Untitled-2.xhtml
    8. Back in document 1, add a cross-reference and select document 2, the style you created, and then "Story One". "Story One" should now appear under the previously typed Table of Contents text, and when highlighed, should show it is an active cross reference in the Hyperlinks panel.
    9. Save document 1. I just kept the name Untitled-1.xhtml
    10. Add both documents to the Book and save the book.
    11. From the Book panel, select Export Book to EPUB...
    12. Save the epub file and open it in Adobe Digital Editions.
    Note that the text "Story One" appears as a hyperlink but when clicked does not switch to the document 2. It does nothing apparent when clicked.
    Looking at the XHTML source for the first document, it is immediately evident why. The filename for document 2.thml is missing.  It looks like this: <a href="#anchor-anchor">
    When it should be : <a href="Untitled-2.xhtml#anchor-anchor">
    The same thing works if you create a hyperlink instead of a cross reference.
    I note then when I use the option to go to the destinate reference in the Cross Link (hyperlink) panel, it does switch to the second InDesign docuemtn. So the cross reference is functioning (in InDesign). But the link is broken in the ePub for the above mentioned reason.
    Bug? Something I'm overlooking?
    Entire source of Untitled-1.xhtml:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <title>Untitled-1.xhtml</title>
    <link href="template.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    </head>
    <body>
    <div id="untitled-1">
    <div class="generated-style">
    <p class="basic-paragraph" xml:lang='en-us'><span class="no-style-override">Table of Contents</span></p>
    <p class="basic-paragraph" xml:lang='en-us'><span class="no-style-override"><a href="#anchor-anchor">“story one”</a></span></p>
    </div>
    </div>
    </body>
    </html>

    As far as I can tell, it has NOT yet been fixed in CS5.5.  I'm having the same problem.  I have about 90 hyperlinks to fix.
    And the explanation that Teus Dejong gives indicates it's not going to be that helpful:  "we have found that only the links in documents split by the CS5 exporter will be fixed. For books the script does only work for references to earlier documents in the book, not for forward references. This means in practice that for most books the script will not repair the links and should be seen as a means to add the year only. At the moment I see no way to repair this, because the book epub output of InDesign does not contain sufficient information to repair links referencing forward to others documents in a book."
    It's pretty discouraging.

  • Add a line as part of a character style in InDesign CS4

    Hi all,
    I'm new in InDesign and am in the process to design a 4 pages newsletter for the internal IT dept. of my company.
    Each page (A4) has 2 columns and will contain one or more articles.
    I'd like to create a character style to format the title of each article so it would stand out and include a line underneath the text.
    I had a look at in the underlining options and nearly found what I needed except that I'd like the line to be the same length as the column width and not the same lenght of the text it underlines. So I managed to achieve what I wanted by drawing a line; but is there a way to include that line as part of my "article header" style so I don't have to draw it each time?
    Or maybe there's an option to make the underline longer than the text, but I didn't find it.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi guys and thanks for your super fast answer.
    I'm in ID now and there's no such option in the Paragraph style panel.
    Basically the underlining options in the Paragraph Style window are +/- the same as for the Character Style one.
    Options available are:
    tick box to activate option
    weight
    offset (moves the lines up and down to the text, but doesn't increase the lenght of the underline)
    colour
    type
    The options, tint, overprint stroke, gap colour, gap tint and overprint gap are greyed out for me.
    This is what I want to get. The first line is with the underline option on (line is same lenght as the text)
    Second one is with a line drawn as grahical object.
    So question is: how can i include a line like in the second example in a style so I don't have to draw it each time?

  • Hyperlinks in PDF from InDesign

    The end goal in this project is to provide a PDF document that contains clickable links to files (JPEGs, PDFs, audio files) to other people. (I have used small thumbnail images in the InDesign file, and when a person clicks on the link in the PDF, the large file is intended to open).
    The problem I experience, is that when I link files through InDesign (through Hyperlinks > Link to: File > Select a file from a folder on my desktop), export to PDF and email it, the person who receives the file at a different location receives an error that the file cannot be found (because they don't have the root folder that the files are contained in).
    I've since been advised that I should attempt to put the PDF and files on a DVD to mail to my contacts, but I still need a solution to this problem since the folder is called /Users/Jennifer/Desktop and the people receiving this file do not have such a folder.
    Other than uploading the images, PDFs and audio files to a file hosting website and linking in my InDesign file through URLs, there must be an easier way! Is there a better way to link files after the InDesign file has been exported to PDF?
    I hope that's clear.
    Responses are much appreciated.
    Jennifer

    Thanks for your reply.
    Really? So there's no way to embed the links/files so that they attach to the InDesign file or the PDF (obviously increasing the file size significantly)?
    I should have also mentioned that I do also send the links folder along with the PDF, but again because the folder originates from my computer, I'm guessing that's why my recipients are receiving an error.

  • How can I get back the "edit original" option in InDesign CS2?

    I am using InDesign CS2 version 4.0 on a new windows 7 pc.
    On my previous pc (windows xp) I could open an ID document, right click on an image, select "edit original" and it would open up in Photoshop for editing. Very handy.
    Now that option is just not there on the drop down. The pencil in the links menu and the option under the edit menu are both greyed out.I can't find any way of accessing the option which is really important for my workflow.
    Any help gratefully received.
    Thanks
    Sarah

    Opening the document on a different computer is a meaningless test for something like this.
    The link could well be present there and not on your computer.
    As for XP mode, the less I say about it the better.

  • Having a problem with character styles in indesign

    I'm having another problem with my style sheets in indesign, I've now got an awful lot of styles in paragraph and character styles. I've created different styles for paragraph justified text and when I go to my style in paragraph styles to use tight text copy, character styles always overides it so it means I have to do  whole lot of extra formatting just to put it right. Does anyone have an idea how I can stop character styles overiding paragraph styles? Thanks very much.

    Perhaps your character styles apply more than you actually want? I.e., rather than just "+Italic" it also applies custom tracking. You should use character styles only to override the stuff you really want to change.
    You can check by calling up the definition for those character styles; the huge "Style Settings" text box lists all the attributes it changes.

  • Can't Successfully Click on Many Tools/Options in InDesign CS6

    I am a creative cloud member and I am having trouble with InDesign CS6.  Outwardly, it seems to install fine, but when I start it up I am unable to click on many of the options.  I can create a new document, and I can add a text box.  However, when I click to change any aspect of the font, nothing happens.  It is like I am not really clicking.  I am able to click and use the pen and text tool, but not the move arrow tool.  Interestingly, if I use the keyboard shortcut (V), I am able to switch to the move arrow.  Also, I can see the pages pallet, but I can’t successfully click on any aspect of it.  Likewise, I can view the layers pallet, but I can’t click the triangle next to layer 1 to open its contents.    I am confident that it’s not a problem with my mouse because I can consistently click on the text tool successfully, and also because all my other programs work normally.
    I am a frequent user of Illustrator CS6 and Photoshop CS6, both of which work perfectly.  I have downloaded all of the latest updates for InDesign.  I am using a PC with Windows 7 64bit and 6mb of ram.
    Thank you for any advice you can offer, --Kate

  • Relative Hyperlinks in an Interactive InDesign Document

    Hi to everybody!
    I'm working in an interactive document with InDesign 5.5 that export to a SWF file, and in the document I'm made buttons that link to PDF document, but the problems is that the route to documents is "absolute"...
    Anybody know any solutions to do this links "relatives"?
    I tried with an "URL" hyperlink and put the PDF in the same folder that the SWF exported document but doesn't open in the web browser
    Thanks in advance
    Alberto

    Ok I try to go one step beyond...
    if I put in the url dialog for example
    PDF/document1.pdf
    and I put the documents in a folder in the same folder where the .swf
    and... WORKS
    Thanks to all

  • Hyperlinks in epubs? Indesign CC 2014

    Hi everyone,
    Apologies if this has been asked before, but I have search and can't seem to find an answer. I have created an ePub for iBooks/iPad. Inserted hyperlinks, tests ok in the dialog box, but doesn't work at all on the iPad. I know the link works as I printed the book to PDF and it worked. I am using the Fixed Layout.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi Steve, I am a regular subscriber to Creative Cloud and have updated all apps.  My version of Adobe InDesign does show 2014.1 under About InDesign.
    Believe it or not, one of the more helpful videos out in Adobe TV land showed interactive under the Object menu:
    See 5:30 on this page: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/how-to/interactivity-fixed-layout-epub.html?set=indesign- -key-techniques--epub-fixed-layout  I finally found the answer here at Adobe forums (monica).   Now I have it installed in the panel on the right.
    I'm on an iMac and use all Apple products.   I've tossed Windows to the wind.
    Thank you so much for your support.
