Hyperlinks with "#" don't work in PDF from PowerPoint

I'm creating a PDF from a PowerPoint 2010 file and hyperlinks with a "#" in them aren't working. The "#" character is being removed from the link. For example a link to http://mysite.com/home.htm#anchor becomes http://mysite.com/home/htmanchor. I have Creative Cloud and installed Acrobat Pro XI today. I used the Create PDF button on the Acrobat ribbon.
Does anyone have a solution?

Ahhh, the slippery slope of perception.
Yes, "#" has a specific use when with HTML .
And "#" has a specific use when with MS Office applications.
And "#" has a specific use with PDF using Acrobat / Adobe Reader.
The specifics of each?
For HTML see what W3C and the related RFCs speak to.
For MS Office see what Microsoft's dev space  & Office info speaks to.
For Acrobat / Reader see "Parameters for Opening PDF Files".
http://wwwimages.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdf_open_parameters_v9 .pdf
In each environment "#" means something different, does something different.
In each environment, when used correctly, "#" performs as designed.
The point is the "design" is In Fact different in the different environments.
So the "SOF" -- Nothing is broken.
Be well...

  • Hyperlinks don't work when importing from PowerPoint

When importing a file from PowerPoint, the hyperlinks on the slide work when in preview mode, but they do not work when the file is published except for when published as a pdf file.  Is this a common problem?

    Hi there
I didn't think Hyperlinks survived the trip from the PowerPoint universe to Captivate. But things probably changed with Captivate 4.
It could be that you are seeing the Flash Player silently blocking your linking. If that's the case, following what is outlined at the tutorial linked below should help.

  • Leopard =10.5.1 Hyperlinks with '~' don't work

On several computers with both 10.5 and 10.5.1 a hyperlink in a message such as:
    http://www.apple.com/~example
is only marked up (underlined) and clickable until the ~ character. So if you click the link it goes to http://www.apple.com. Any link without that character no matter how long works. Please help.

It is evident from all of your replies to my topic that the problem can be replicated and there really is no solution that I can do. I cannot control if someone is sending me plain text or not. Actually I sent myself a message, made sure that it was not composed as plain text and the problem still happened. So I can't speak for those that say that it made a difference, in my case it didn't.
Does Apple monitor these forums? Is there a better way to communicate to them that this needs to be fixed? I am shocked that this very obvious problem had not been fixed by the latest patch. So many links, especially to blog sites use ~ characters. Maybe it is a UNIX home thing?
Thanks to everyone for their feedback.

Is there a log file in the document folder indicating what the problem was. There are a number of reasons that PDF creation may fail. You can try to print to the Adobe PDF printer to see if there is any indication in that process. The processing is different, but the same problems may show up with both processes.

  • Word 2000 hyperlinks don't work in .pdf created with Acrobat 9 Pro

I'm new to Adobe Forums, so please overlook the effrontery of my posting a query previously discussed. Perhaps someone can simply reply with a link to the prior discussion. I have installed Acrobat 9.2 Pro in 2 computers, one running XP64 Pro, the other XP32 Pro. Word 2000 is installed in both. All Word hyperlinks work fine, but after .pdf conversion using Acrobat 9.2 Pro, none of these work. In 'Preferences', I have navigated Convert to PDF > Microsoft Office Office Word > Edit Settings > Add Links to Adobe PDF File and confirmed that the Add Links feature is enabled. Having ascertained that this glitch is not specific to either XP64 or XP32 operating systems, I uninstalled Acrobat 9.2 Pro from the XP32 computer and reinstalled Acrobat 6.1 Pro. Then using the same Word 2000 document, I converted to .pdf using Acrobat 6.1 Pro, with no problems whatsoever. This looks like a serious bug in Acrobat 9 Pro, which the telephone support folks have acknowledged. Alas, they won't give me the tiniest clue how to resolve it, nor any workaround, but merely refer me to AdobeForums.com for help. I suspect a corrective patch or 'upgrade' will be forthcoming, but meanwhile, if anyone knows of a workaround, please enlighten me. Thanks. /rmbrown

Thank you, CtDave, for your speedy reply and for the 'Acrobat Technical Evangelist' knowledge base article. Word 2000 is one of Microsoft's masterpieces - by disabling 'autosave', the application is totally stable, does not require 'activation' by Microsoft. Acrobat 9 enables 'saving' of interactive .pdf forms, a most valuable feature and one much appreciated by anyone completiing such forms. There must be more to this issue than 'incompatibility', because I can create a test Word 2000 document, hyperlink a valid URL, convert to .pdf with Acrobat 9, and the hyperlink works fine in Acrobat 9. When I attempt to do this using a much more complex Word 2000 document, embedded with scores of hyperlinks, these links fail to work following conversion to .pdf with Acrobat 9, but work fine following conversion to .pdf with  Acrobat 6. I can then use Acrobat 9 to open the .pdf created with Acrobat 6, and successfully edit any of these fully functional hyperlinks using the 'Link tool'. I don't know who prepared the 'Acrobat Technical Evangelist' article (AF1908DCd01) - no credits were cited, and I'm far from certain that this authentically belongs to Adobe's knowledge base. So I appreciate your sharing this information with me, but I cannot say that my question has been definitively answered. If you have any further information or tips, please reply in this thread. /rmbrown

  • Bookmarks exist but don't work in PDF (exported from InDesign)

    Hi all,
I had a similar problem a few months ago where SOME cross-references within a document weren't taking you to the right place when exported to PDF although they appeared to work fine in InDesign (the "source" and "destination" arrows took you to the right place). Someone suggested exporting the file to IDML and importing again, which worked fine.
Now I'm working on the same document (an update) but it's grown a bit and so each chapter is in its own file within a book. Problem is similar but not the same. Some cross-references work fine in the generated PDF, others are recognised as being links (cursor changes) but NO effect when clicking on them... not taking me to the wrong place, nothing is happening at all. ALSO the table of contents AND the bookmarks don't work.
I've exported each chapter to IDML, recreated the InDesign files and recreated the book, but still no joy. If all else fails, I'll put the book back into a single file but I'd rather not go through this pain each time I have to update the book (especially as this latest change was really tiny).
Any suggestions? Are cross-references between files in a book known to be problematic? And if they are, has the problem been addressed for CS5.5? (I'm looking to use InDesign for a journal that will contain a lot of links between elements, but the turnaround time is tight and I'm wary of this issue being a problem each month.)
Currently using CS5 on Windows 7 Professional, and Acrobat 9 Pro Extended was installed as part of the Tech Comm Suite.
    Thanks in advance,
    Alison

This is so funny...I was just about to close my email and look up the
Forums to profusely thank the person who posted the solution to a similar
problem I was having in CS4.  I'd created numerous hyperlinks in Indesign
documents and sometimes the links worked in a pdf, and sometimes not.  The
problem solver was talking about a solution in Word, but I found the same
type of text in the PDF settings box that pops up when you want to save the
pdf.  There are all kinds of checkboxes and I'd thought I was doing enough
by checking 'add hyperlinks'...but the advisor said you have to make sure
'tagged PDF' is CLEAR.   So the same thing will probably work for you with
your bookmarks!  (...if the settings are similar in CS5 of course, and
there's no reason they shouldn't be.  I guess.)
The only thing is, there's a lot of what we call 'ant work' ahead of me.  I
have to go back to each InDesign doc and retype the text in the home font,
and create the hyperlinks over again.  Luckily, the hyperlink destinations
are still there.  It's not enough just to export the document again with
the Tagged checkbox cleared, and you can't create a new hyperlink over an
old one; the 'new hyperlink' option isn't available under Interactive. So
you may have the same problem.
Let me know if this works!  I'm off to thank the person...
    Susan

  • Hyperlinks not working in PDF from ID

    Hi folks:
I am currently creating a file in InDesign (CC 2014) and attempting to export it to a pdf. When I do export it, only 6 out of 15 hyperlinks work in PDF.  The links that work AND do not work are both URLs and Emails.  In ID all links function in the Hyperlinks panel. I have unclicked "Shared Hyperlinks Destination" for all links. It is not that the links are broken, it is that in the PDF version, half of the links are not reading that a hyperlink is attached.
Any troubleshooting ideas are greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Jen

When you export with File > Export > Adobe PDF (Print), you need to check Hyperlinks at the bottom (see below). Hyperlinks are not included by default:

  • Hyperlinks not converting when creating a pdf from Word 2010 to Adobe Acrobat 11.0.6

First off, let me say that these are not table of contents hyperlinks.  I have created a document in Word 2010 (not a MAC) with hyperlinks to files residing on our company's intranet.  In Word the hyperlinks work great but when I create the pdf, the links do not work.  I have converted using both PDFMaker from Word and Create a pdf from within Acrobat.  Yes, I have all the boxes checked regarding saving links.  The links appear to work partially.  Meaning that when I hover the cursor over the link, the pointy finger appears but when I click I get a pop-up message telling me the file could not be opened.  Also, when I hover over the hyperlink, the address appears.  So, I think it knows there's a link and it tries to open but can't.  When I create the file within Adobe the link works - once.  When I click on the link I get a pop-up window asking me if I want to save my file before closing.  After my response the file closes and the linked file opens.  However, when I go back into the file and try the hyperlink again, I get the pop-up telling me the file cannot be opened.  HELP!  I am at my wits end.  After spending hours yesterday trying to research (I think I read every thread related to hyperlinks but I am not using a Mac, table of contents or Adobe 7 around which it seems all the prior questions revolve) and futily creating and recreating the pdf (as if doing the same thing repeatedly would somehow magically work) I am about to give up.  This is a document that will be published to our intranet for use by employees which cross-references other documents to which they can refer for additional information.  I would prefer to publish a pdf and not a Word document.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for your input Bill. I've checked the preferences and "view large images" is turned on. It's not all of the images which are missing, only certain ones do not transfer over to PDF.

  • External UCube speakers don't work after awakening from sleep mode since 10.7.5 upgrade

Ever since I upgraded to 10.7.5 when I wake my computer from sleep mode...my external UCube speakers don't work unless I unplug them and plug them back in. I've already tried resetting the SMC. It recognizes and shows the speakers in the sound preferences...but no sound unless I reconnect the usb cable. Worked fine in 10.7.4
Any ideas? Its ridiculous all the audio problems being reported.

I have a mac mini (A1283) with OS 10.7.4. Upon upgrading to 10.7.5 it did not start up again. Instead, the light was on and the hard drive did not start up. The light on the connected USB mouse was not lit.
    My solution:
    Cold start with Command-v pressed.
This should start Verbose mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492 ).
What happened on my mac mini was that the grey startup screen with the Apple logo appeared for a long while before the login screen came.
Maybe Cmd-v set open firmware params and fixed some corruption.
Anyway: my mac mini works again.

  • ICal and Mail don't work after downgrade from Lion to Snow Leopard

Hey everyone, after an extremely awful time with with Lion (it knocked out of my audio interface AND my wireless) I downgraded back to Snow Leopard yesterday. I made a Carbon Copy of my Lion drive with all my data on an external drive (which I still have) and after wiping my local drive clean I reinstalled Snow Leopard from my disk. After it was done I chose to transfer data from another system local system (I selected everything) and an hour and a half later everything was transferred over. After doing a software update, I've found that I get big error messages with iCal, Mail, and even the App Store that say they can't open and I'm assuming that it has to do with incompatible data that got transferred from Lion. Any ideas on how to get those programs back up and running?? Thanks so much for you help!

Indeed the USB issue seems to be related to missing drivers.
You have to install this USB 3.0 driver:
    [AMD USB Driver v 2.0.7.176 Windows 7 - 64 Bit|http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_driver_details.jsp?service=EU&selCategory =2&selFamily=2&selSeries=178&selProduct=7534&selSh ortMod=null&language=13&selOS=30&selType=all&yearu pload=&monthupload=&dayupload=&useDate=null&mode=a llMachines&search=&action=search&macId=&country=al l&selectedLanguage=13&type=all&page=3&ID=87792&OSI D=30&driverLanguage=42]
Furthermore you have to ensure that chipset driver was installed too.
The notebook supports ATI graphic chip and AMD chipset. The chipset driver is part of the ATI graphic card driver and therefore you should ensure that this driver would be installed too.

We have JDK 1.6 installed.  The License Merge Module is not related to
    this issue.
    The files under \Program Files\Common Files\Business
    Objects\3.0\crystalreportviewers11\prompting  are not being installed.
If we copy files, into this folder structure the reports work.
One of the Business Object's Merge Modules should install the files
there rather than just an empty folder structure.
I got was able to figure out how to enter a customer support message.
They said that they could not support us because we were not on CRXIR2
    (Crystal Reports 11 Release 2).
I found a download for CRXIR2SP4 (same thing service pack 4).
I installed it the Merge Module names changed to include a "_5"
    Was:
    CrystalReports11_RDC_Reportengine.msm
    CrystalReports11_RDC_Runtime.msm
CrystalReports11_HotFix_Merge.msm (This is contrived by us from one of
    your hot fixes)
    Now:
    CrystalReports11_5_RDC_Reportengine.msm
    CrystalReports11_5_RDC_Runtime.msm
    CrystalReports11_5_RDC_License.msm (should have been included)
    *CrystalReports11_HotFix_Merge.msm (not needed anymore)
I will try to put a installer together with these.  If this work there
will be some complexity around uninstalling the old one and installing
    the new one.

  • Creating PDFs from PowerPoint Tables that InDesign Can Handle

Hi - I just posted the question below on the InDesign forum, but I think it may actually be a Microsoft-Adobe-pdf issue.  Any help is much appreciated.
Hi All, this is my first post on the Adobe Community.  I problem cropped up in the last week and i am going crazy.  Please help!!  I am running on  a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7.5.
I have been using a workflow to create tables in InDesign for months with no issues:
    1.  Calculate a complex table in Excel
    2.  Paste the table into PowerPoint for formatting
    3.  Copy the table in PowerPoint, then paste it back as a pdf image
    4.  Option-click on the pdf image on the slide to save it as a pdf file
    5.  Go to a frame InDesign that already has a linked image, re-link to the new pdf file.
This workflow has been very helpful because I have a lot of complex and carfully formatted tables I need to get into InDesign.  Now, since upgrading both my Microsoft Office 2011 and my Adobe CS6 SW it not working.
I can copy, paste-as-pdf, save the pdf file.   But when I try to link to it in InDesign it get the message "Failed to open the pdf file."
I can still link to older pdf files with no problem, and I can use this work flow on text-only pdf files from PowerPoint.  The pdf files that contain tables are not linking into InDesign.  I have tried to do the past-as-pdf into Microsoft Word and the behavior is the same.
All the pdf files look fine in Acrobat.
Thank you very much for any assistance.
    -Cecelia

It's a matter of efficiency as much as anything else. I read too many
reports here of people having problems printing previewing or working
with PDFs and it often comes back to preview.
It's fine for JPGs but PDFs? No, especially those generated by InDesign.
Why open them in preview only to find a problem when Reader or Acrobat
are far better applications? It just seems horribly inefficient to have
preview set as the default for PDFs only to find an problem and then
have to quit preview and open Reader or Acrobat.

  • Low resolution images in .pdf from PowerPoint

I have Acrobat Professional 7.0.3, and MS PowerPoint 2003 SP3.  When I convert a presentation into PDF that looks good in PowerPoint, and prints fine from PowerPoint, my image resolution drops and looks awful.  It doesn't matter if I use "high quality print," or "press quality."  No matter what I do, the images don't look good.  These are high resolution images, so that's not the problem.
    Thanks for your help!
    BHB

I think so.  PowerPoint has a menu item called "Adobe PDF."  There are four options, one is "change conversion settings."  In that window I set the "conversion settings" to "high quality print."  Then I select "Adobe PDF" in PowerPoint again, and this time click on "convert to Adobe PDF."  Then a small window called "Acrobat PDFMaker" pops up and does the conversion. The resulting PDF file opens in Acrobat Professional.
