I am giving my old MacBook Air to my granddaughter.  What is the most efficient way to erase the data?

You have two options.....
One is to do a clean reinstall of your OS - if you still have the USB installer that came with your Macbook Air...
The second option is to create a new user (your granddaugher's name).....Deauthorize your Macbook Air from your Itunes and Appstore.....
Restart your Macbook after you've created your granddaughter's user name, login under your granddaughter's username and delete your username.
Search your Macbook for your old files and delete them.....
Good luck...

  • My old macbook air crashed so i got a new hard drive. i successfully restored all the music i bought on itunes but there are a lot of other songs that i did not obtain through itunes that i cant figure out how to move from my phone to my computer.

i would like to know how to solve this problem without erasing what is currently on my phone.

You can transfer songs that you didn't buy from the iTunes store but it requires third party software such as Suneti. This is one of the best programs I know for the task and unfortunately I'm not aware of any freeware programs that transfer music from an iOS device to the computer.

  • What is the most efficient way to use my 2006ish iMac as a second screen for my MacBook pro?

    Hello.
My line of work really requires the use of two screens, and I have a macbook pro from 2010 and a white iMac from 2006, I believe. My editing software lives on my laptop, so I'd like to use my iMac as the second display. I can't seem to find any male mini dvi to male mini displayport cables online, so I have a feeling they don't exist. Should I just get a mini dvi (male) to dvi (female) for the iMac and a (male) dvi to (male) mini displayport for the laptop? Is this going to cause latency if I'm running videos? Help please!

Your iMac (from 2006) does not support Target Display Mode, that functionality only became available in Late 2009 with MiniDisplay Port. Even if you were to find a male-to-male cable the iMac isn't going to accept the video from the MacBook Pro in a method you're hoping to achieve (extended desktop mode). I've use ScreenRecycler and the lag is barely noticeable, I think even calling it "lag" is overkill.
If you need a second monitor for work that is apparently an important accessory, why are they not supplying with a second monitor? Even if you were to find a valid connection solution, it's response time would still be slower than a direct link from the MacBook Pro.

  • My macbook air keeps opening ad websites without my permission. I've removed all website data various times which hasn't worked. this is making it very difficult for me to browse. please help?

I'm scared i have a virus. safari keeps opening windows/tabs without my permission. these are normally ads. i have removed website data various times which hasn't worked.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • 2006 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo- What hardware upgrades could I do to use all the Mountain Lion features?

Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.16 15" Specs
    Identifiers: Core 2 Duo/Late 2006 - MA609LL - MacBookPro2,2 - A1211
My old MBP will not operate on Mountain Lion, curious if I could upgrade harware to get all functions from Mountain Lion.  From what I have read I need video card upgrade and system must be bootable in kernal 64bit mode. Any recomedations on hardware?

Nope. Besides the labor and parts cost, every successive model rearranges things around so the logic board is not interchangeable between models. It is cheaper to buy a more recent Mac that does fulfill requirements, even if it is not new; check the refurbished section in the Apple Store.

  • How much is the old macbook air 11 in apple store

how much is the old macbook air 11 in apple store

They aren't sold in Apple Stores. Only the new models. Go to the online Apple Store and check refurbished items for Macs from one to two years older. Otherwise, look on eBay.

  • HT2728 How would I transfer my information from my old Macbook Air (2008) to the new one I purchased today?

Today I ordered my new MacBook Air - and am looking for advice on how I might best transfer all the information off my old MacBook Air to the new one. There are not many ports available on the old MacBook Air (2008/9) and of course the new MacBook Air comes with more ports and connectivity.
Appreciate any advice that you can give me.
    Many thanks in advance
    Ed

Use an external drive with Time Machine or Clone your HD to the external.
When you start the new one, setup manager will ask if you want to migrate from another disk, time machine etc.
This will only require 1 usb port.

  • How do I transfer all the information in my iTunes on my old mac book to my new mac book pro so I can sync my devices to the new machine with erasing all the data my iPhone and iPad?

I have just bought a new mac book pro and want to use this machine as the main computer to which I will sync my iPhone and iPad.
How do I transfer the information within iTunes on my old mac book so when I connect the devices the new machine will not erase all my data?
    Thank you

Copy the entire iTunes folder within the music folder on your old Mac to the music folder on your new Mac.
You can use an external hard disc for the transfer, or you can connect the computers together using Firewire Target Disc Mode as explained here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661

  • HT1766 Where is my old backup stored? Because of auto backup, I can't see any of my older ones and with new ios erased all my data and it kept backing up the "new" setting

I plugged in my iphone and then itunes says my iOS was old and need update. Hence I update it to 7 where it erased all my data to start with, and it was actually backed up before it was erased.
After the new iOS was installed, it just couldn't restore the old data and instead it kept auto back up the new setting.  I called apple help line and the guy said whatever is on the itunes list is all there is. But because of the auto backup, the whole list is full of new backups without my old stuff. Is there anyone who can tell me whether these files are overridden or instead just not showing on itunes, and where can I find it?
    Thanks lots

When you restore a device, a new backup is created and the old backup has a date added to the backup name.
Look in iTunes prefs > Devices.
The current backup will not have a date in the name. It will show the date on right side.

  • Handoff does not work on a 2 1/2 year old MacBook Air

As I do a lots of fieldwork I was looking forward to using the new handoff feature in Yosemite which would allow me to transfer my work from my iPad to my 2 1/2 year old MacBook Air. I have now discovered that my laptop is too old for this feature. Why? This smacks of built-in obsolescence.

This is a user-to-user support forum, so we can't usually explain the "why" of many Apple decisions, although you may get some educated guesses from someone here. You can provide feedback to Apples at https://www.apple.com/feedback/ if you like.
May not help, but my MacBook Air is a mid-2012 model that is supposed to support Handoff but I've yet to get it to work in spite of meticulously following all of the instructions.
Also may not help, but I don't really care if I don't get it to work as all it would seem to do is very slightly reduce the number of steps to open a document on the other device. Without Handoff I can start a document in Pages on my MacBook Air, save to iCloud then go to my iPhone and open Pages and resume editing there. You may already be aware of that -- and you may have more need or use of Handoff than I do -- but thought I would point that out just in case you were thinking Handoff provided more capabilities than it does.

  • I have a one year old Macbook Air 13.  I have a brand new 22" external monitor.  When I connect my  external monitor it initially provides a nice display - very accurate and  no distortions.  But, within a few minutes the screen begins a incessant series

I have a one year old Macbook Air 13.  I have a brand new 22" external monitor.  In turning the Macbook and monitor on, the monitor displays very well, but within a few minutes it begins this incessant blinking (temporary black out of the screen that lasts anywhere from 1-5 seconds).  This has been going on for a long time (it also happended with my older monitor which apparantly I threw out when I should have kept it thinking it was the problem).  From reading various blogs in the Apple support community, this appears to be a widespread problem, but I don't find a solution, only a lot of speculation.  I'm very surprised the Apple folks haven't figured this out.   As a new Apple user, heretofor, I have been very impressed with the support and effort to get fixes out to users.  This, however, has me frustrated to the point of junking my Mac and going back to a PC.  I love the Macbook Air and most of the functionality, but I cannot function without an external monitor. Anybody have any ideas, please help.  Frustrated, Jim

Your dsplay is getting extended onto the external monitor. Chcnage the setting to duplicate it or only display on the external monitor and you should be fine,
Let me know if this worked for you.

  • How do I transfer files from my old macbook air with a broken screen to my new macbook air?

Is there a way so I can connect both computers and copy the files from the old broken one to the new one?

  • What do I need to transfer data from my old MacBook Air to a new MacBook Air

what do I need to transfer files and programs from my old MacBook Air using OSX Lion 10.7.5 to a new MacBook Air?

An external USB drive on which you can install a clone of your old computer's drive. You csn then connect it to your new computer and use Migration Assistant to migrate your data to the new computer. Or you can manually select which of your files you want and copy them to the new computer.

  • I have an 8 year old MacBook Air running OS X 10.6.8; can I upgrade to most current operating system or is it maxed out?

I have an 8 year old MacBook Air running OS X 10.6.8. Can it handle an upgrade to Lion and then to Snow Leopard or is hardware incapable.  Additionally, I have a 3 year old Mac Mini running same OS X 10.6.8, with new solid state hard drive. Can I upgrade that one?

8 years old? Not likely. The first MBA was released in January 2008. It can be upgraded to Lion although it meets only the minimal specifications to run Lion. Snow Leopard would likely perform better than Lion on that hardware.
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
An Early 2009 Mac Mini is capable of running Mountain Lion.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion call 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. Ask for a Sales Representative. They will check your Apple ID, and email you a code and instructions.  The cost is $29.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps - App compatibility and feature support for OS X & iOS.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • Migration from old macbook air to new macbook air...beware

Although spent hours on the phone with Apple and bought necessary cables, they were not able to get migration assistant to work using ethernet.
You can't use firewire as new macbook air doesn't have it. You can use thunderbold as old macbook air doesn't have it.
Finally I was told to use Time Machine. After connecting old macbook air backup to new macbook air and using migration assistant, I got a message saying (essentially) 'you can use this from an old mac'. Spent more time on the phone with Senior tech support. They had no clue.
Finally called the store. Genius said, you can't migrate from old macbook air with Snow Leopard to new macbook air with Lion. You must upgrade old macbook air to Lion first.
GEEZ, do you think someone at tech support might have mentioned that DAYS ago?

    That is bad info.
The MBA that I am using right now used a TM backup from my old MBP, which was running Snow Leopard. Absolutely no problems using Setup Assistant to import all the apps, data, user settings. The session performed flawlessly, and took about an hour to move everything.
If at all possible, use Setup Assitant, rather than Migration Assistant. The transition will be seamless.
