I am going to university this fall for engineering and I was wondering which macbook pro (13 or 15 inch) would be better. Is the larger screen worth the extra weight ? I will be doing some computer programming and I feel like reading code on a smaller screen could be a bit of a pain. Also, what is the best option in terms of backup? I don't anticipate having a lot of video but I will have some pictures, music files as well as regular documents and spreadsheets. I'd also like to get an idea of how good the battery life is. Thanks in advance:)

The 13" will do the trick for what you describe as your needs, Be sure to consider how you will backup your data -- need an external drive?
Also be sure to check with your college or division of study to see what they recommend. If they are hostile to Macs, you may be on your own for finding support. But in most major cities, that will not be too hard.

  • I am going to college this fall and can't decide which MacBook pro to buy!

I am going to college this fall and can't decide which MacBook pro to buy the 13in or the 15in. Mainly to type, browse the web, watch videos, and maybe some light gaming. I am worried that the 15in might be too big to carry around all the time.  And worried about the 13in being too small and hurting my eyes over time. Once I do get one, I am most likely going to use it for the full 4 years. Please Help !

You can either use Office for Mac 2011 or use Boot Camp to run Windows or use a VM, such as Parallels Desktop to run Windows. Running Windows, you'd be able to use MS Office for Windows.

  • Photo editing and occasional video stuff - which Macbook Pro for me?

Hi guys! I'm seriously considering buying a Macbook Pro to replace my current desktop PC. My intuition is telling me to get 16GB of RAM and to not settle for a two core processor. This, however, isn't too easy on the wallet.
I do photo editing quite regularly, working with raw files that have 20-ish megapixels. This includes simple adjustments in Lightroom, and more advanced editing in Photoshop. Sometimes I also do simple video editing, working with 1080p material, typically shot with a DSLR.
I'm not looking for a serious pro machine - simply something that wouldn't be too frustrating in this kind of work. In photography I consider myself to be a serious hobbyist, and the video work is somewhere between amateur, prosumer and consumer level stuff.
What kind of tips and suggestions can you give me? Looking forward to hearing your ideas!

Thanks. I've been thinking that I'd use my current 24" monitor with the macbook as well. Maybe a bigger screen on the laptop itself would be nice on the road - but I don't consider that a necessity.
Any comments on the performance difference between the dual-core and quad-core processors?

  • I'm looking at buying a MacBook Pro for uni and I was wondering what the best type would be to get? One with retina display etc

I'm looking at buying a MacBook Pro for uni next year and I'm not sure what type to get. I've heard different things about the retina display and that people only get it to edit photos etc but then people have said that it is quicker and makes the laptop lighter. I'm also unsure of how much storage I will need. If anyone can help that would be great!!

There are two screen displays available - Retina and non-Retina - and there's a world of difference between them. The Retina has non-user replaceable RAM and flash storage (well, the latter without voiding your warranty) and the non-Retina has user replaceable RAM and HD/SSD. And then, of course, there's the difference in the resolution of the screen itself... and a difference between the 13" and 15" screens (available in both 'flavors').
How much storage you need will depend on your needs.
I don't recommend the Retina models at this time - too many issues with tinting (on Samsung displays) and image retention (on LG displays).
So take a look at what the non-Retina machines have to offer - you can customize to your heart's content but remember that you can always upgrade the RAM and the hard drive in the non-Retina machines yourself.
    My 2¢...

  • I am running my canon camera on the EOS utility program for mac, and i was wondering if there is a keyboard shortcut to start video recording, instead of using the mouse.

I am using EOS utility for MAC to run my canon camera at work. I have a foot switch connected to my macbook that allows me to take snapshots with my foot while i work ( i am a dentist and i have my camera hooked to a microscope). the way i did that is by programming a keyboard shortcut that snaps photos on EOS utility, to the foot switch software.
So my question is: On EOS there is a video recording function, so i was wondering if there is a keyboard shortcut or if i can create a keyboard shortcut for the start/stop record function for video recording..

    Hi
How much free space do you have on your boot disk ( Macintosh HD)?
You may also like to add your current OS ;-)

  • My hard disk is damaged and i have no external hard drive, and i was wondering, if i sent my computer to Apple, would they back up my files for me before repairing it?

My hard disk has been damaged for about 4 months now. When I ran the disk repair under disk utility, it told me to back my files and send it in for repairs. My problem is that I had a external hard drive, but I lost it, so I obviously can't back up my files. Also I tried using other external hard drives and that didn't work, pretty sure it was because they were not formatted for a mac. So my question is that if I send my computer to Apple, for repair, that would they back up my files there before repairing my computer. It could be a dumb question but at least I asked. Also my mouse pad no longer works. The "clickability" of it stopped about 3 months or so after getting the computer and just around last Christmas the mouse would not click anymore at all, it would move if one put there fingers on the mousepad but it would not "touch click" anymore. So yeah, help!
And the OS X was still a snow leopard, not sure the number of the OS.

Can't you just get another external drive, format it for Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and backup some if not all of your files? Apple's not in the data recovery business. You should have maintained a backup and now it might be too late. Your best bet would probably be just to call it a loss and buy both an internal, to put in your machine, and an external, for backup purposes. You can boot from your installer disc, format the 'new' internal and begin restoring your apps at least.
I'll never understand why some people don't have backups. Drives fail. It's best to have redundant backups so that all three or four drives don't all fail at once.
Sheesh - I know that I'm not helping your problem but maybe now you've learned your lesson and others will as well.

  • Hey guys, I'm new here, and ready to make my first apple purchase, I'm a high school junior and wondering which macbook i should get..it would be great for you to help me out, Thank you :) PS - Retina is not an option.

I'm also open to the higher end macbook air, if that's worth it. thank you

You're welcome, and GJ doing your homework!
IMO, as a student pick the Air.  You will find it is much lighter and won't cause strain over a full day of carrying it around.  But don't forget to get a nice padded case/bag or slip cover for it cause you want to protect your investment.
If you haven't already go to the store and see touch and feel the differences ultimately one will feel "right" and then you'll know.  Pick your upgrade options and enjoy your new mac!

  • I have a standard MacBook from 2007. My optical drive broke on this a while ago. I was wondering which external optical drives are compatible and work with this MacBook? Thanks.

You can get a fairly cheap external CD/DVD burner/player at Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/External-CD-DVD-Blu-Ray-Drives/SubCategory/ID-420?Order=PR ICE

  • Which Macbook Pro do you recommend for CS6?

I need to purchase a new laptop because I recently got a copy of CS6 Design & Web Premium. My old Macbook won't run it so I was wondering which MacBook Pro model is best to run the program. I mainly use Illustrator and Photoshop to make fashion illustrations and technical sketches. All the feedback is appriciated. I need to buy a new laptop ASAP!

I would recromend the macbook pro retina for adobe CS6, this computer should sufice for years to come. If however you have insufficient funds, another choice would be the above (Macbook Pro 15'). Like he said you should get 8GB Ram, so Go to crucial.com and you could get the same ram with lifetime warranty for 60 $ instead of apples 100 $

  • If my iphone 5  have problems , apple  is going to change this iphone for a new iphone 5 or 5c 5s?

if my iphone 5  have problems , apple  is going to change this iphone for a new iphone 5 or 5c 5s?

but if i pay something more thay can change this iiphone 5 for a 5s?
No, not for a warranty or out of warranty replacement.  Any iOS device will be replaced with an identical device.  Heck, Apple still has original iPhone service units in stock for out of warranty replacement and battery replacement of 1st generation iPhones from 2007.
