I am having a problem with my 2009 Macbook Pro

Hello Everyone,
I am having a problem with my 2009 Macbook Pro .  A few weeks ago I plugged it into the charger after running it down to reserve battery power. It appeared to be charging, but then all of a sudden my clock and calender reset to year 2000 and then my computer blacked out and went dead. I tried to boot it up but nothing happened (literally nothing).   I have tried 3 different chargers on it, but all I get is a faint green light and even after hours it still won't boot up.   I have tried replacing the battery, but still nothing happens.
Any Ideas?  I am pretty desperate to get my computer back up and running before school finals.

You may have to see if an authorized Apple service specialist can check over
the charging system (magsafe dc-in board, power adapter, and MacBook/Pro)
and test or run a diagnostic on it, to be sure there is no damage or failed parts.
When you attached the adapter to charge the computer, after it said it was going
to reserve power, did you shut down open applications and stop using the MB/Pro?
That would've been the thing to do, since the margin of run-time near the bottom
of the power cycle can be wrong by the gauge estimate, it can just quit.
While I have not researched your year/model/series in detail, I do know some
models of Apple portable computers have a small battery or capacitor on the
logic board, separate from the main power battery; it may need replacement.
A service provider w/ Apple training & parts would be a likely resource to fix it.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Samsung hard drive problems with mid 2009 Macbook Pro

Arghh, this is driving me mad.
I'd like to know if anyone has installed a Samsung HM641JI SATA II hard drive into a mid 2009 Macbook Pro (mine is a 2.8Ghz) and, if so, how they managed it. The drive is 640GB. These are the steps I've taken:
    1. Swap out the stock drive for the Samsung
    2. Boot from a USB drive which contains a mirror of my system
    3. When the system identified the new disk, I formatted it with 2 partitions (GUID table, HFS journaled)
    4. Reboot
    5. System is very slow. Boots from USB but can't use keyboard to login
    6. Switch off and try again
    7. Remove Samsung drive
    8. Reboot from USB (works perfectly)
    9. Downgrade firmware to 1.6
    10. Replace samsung drive and try again
    11. System boots from USB
    12. Verify that drive is running at 1.5Ghz
    13. Disk utility and system profiler both crash
    14. Disk unmounts by itself and other random weirdness
    15. Remove Samsung drive
I've read endless reports about the firmware in this model of Macbook Pro and its issues with SATA II but struggling to find anything current and specific. Two questions:
    a. Is there anythign I can do to get this drive to play nicely?
    b. What drive should I get if the answer to a is no?
As a bit of background.. my system began playing up last week with lots of spinning beach balls resulting in forced switch offs. Booting from a mirror on a USB drive works perfectly so I concluded that the drive was on its way out. A drive test utility confirmed this. I'm now wondering if it really was the drive or the cable or the logic board.
    Any advice appreciated.
    Cheers

I'm coming around to the idea that this might be a problem with the SATA cable rather than the drive.
I currently have the stock drive (Hitachi) back in the macbook. It mounted for a while and was then ejected when I tried writing data to it. System profiler reports that "There was an error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices."
I was able to mount the same drive in a USB enclosure this afternoon without any problems. Right now, I seem to be having issues with both the Samsung drive and the Hitachi drive - I wasn't suspicious of thr latter because I thought it was failing.
I found one or two accounts of other people having similar problems that were resolved with a new sata cable.
How does a cable fail? Could this be my problem?
    Cheers

  • I am having USB problems with my 2009 MacBook running OSX 10.6.8. They will open an 8GB flash drive, but neither of my 500GB WD HDDs.

After successful use of two WD 500 GB external drives something has happened and the drives show up, but I cannot access any files. One drive holds all of my pictures in iPhoto, but as soon as I attempt to run iPhoto the program stops responding and will no longer open through the HDD. My other external holds all of my business documents, and while the folders show up in Finder, none of the files show up when I open the folders. This problem began when I plugged my iPhoto drive in at the same times as an iTouch to dump some pictures. Halfway through the dump the HDD disappeared and has not worked since. Both of my drives work on a friend's Mac, so he recommended that I buy a USB hub to plug everything into as he suggested that my USB ports are not supplying the needed power to run the HDDs. I bought a D-Link DUB-H7, but the same problem persists. I have reset the PRAM, but nothing changed. Any advice will be extremely appreciated.

By the way, my iPhoto is version 8.1.

  • Problem with mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13" hard drives

In May of this year I upgraded my stock hard drive to a 500GB Hitachi from the stock 160. About 5 days ago the computer froze and hung gor several minutes. Mouse still moved but no response from the OS. Forced a restart after several minutes. The computer rebooted, but showed no hard drive. Install DVD (Snow Leopard) doesn't detect hard drive, neither does disk utility. I put the old hard drive back in, everything is fine. The OS finds updates available, updates to 10.6.4. Tonight, the same precise thing happens on the old drive. No disk showing in the installer or disk utility.
    Any suggestions?

Run the Apple Hardware Test you'll find on one of the DVDs that came with your computer. Swap the drives again and repeat the test, so you'll have results from each drive. Note the exact text of the error message each time, then make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store, or take the machine to an authorized service provider for diagnosis, being sure to take along copies of the error messages.

  • New problem with display on Macbook Pro retina (Samsung panel)

    Hello All,
I am a very new people on your forum but a few weeks ago i bought a new macbook pro retina with samsung panel.
I haven't ghosting effect on my macbook but i have a new and really bad problem.
I try to found a some information on Russians forums but nobody can help me with it.
I can see an artifacts in the form of flashing pixels on all display.
It occurs in 20-30 minutes after the start of work.
Today i try to test it on game Dirt 2 and i can see defects after 2 minutes after start. So i think it can be reason with Geforce 650 but when i back to desktop and use HD 4000 i still see a problem.
This is best seen on a black screen with high backlight.
When i try to connect TV via HDMI i can't see any problem in my TV.
So i really don't know what could be the reason.
I attached the video with issue to video hosting
    http://vimple.ru/579f880e8b7045e09f8fc5bc097c5e2b
Also i have a many software problem like Crashing safari and iTunes. It can be a few times per day.
I really disappointed with my new Macbook.
I haven't any problem with old 2009 Macbook pro with Snow Leopard but Mountain Lion is not working well.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards
    TD

  • Mini Displayport to DVI Adapter Problem on Mid-2009 Macbook Pro

I have a new mid-2009 Macbook Pro hooked up to a 20" Samsung 2033sw LCD with a native 1600x900 resolution using a mini Displayport to DVI adapter that I bought off of EBay. No matter what I've tried I can't get anything to display on the external Samsung LCD higher than 1024x768. I tried switching between GPU's and that made no difference. Any ideas.?

    Michael, thanks for the reply;
When you open System Preferences/Displays does a second preference panel open up OK on the Samsung ?
Yes, but I can't see it unless I select 'gather displays'. Then it appears on the MBP LCD, and showing the correct resolution - 1600x900.
Is there an Options Tab visible under which you can check 'Overscan' ?
None that I can find. Only display and color tabs.
Is the Refresh Rate set to 60.0 Hertz
Yes, that is what it shows in Refresh Rate.
I also pulled out an older LG LCD that is fairly generic, .e.g. it has DVI in at 1280x1024. Same problem on that LCD ... nothing higher than 1024x768, but this time at 1280x1024 I get major noise and screen distortion. The displayed image is jumping all over the place, but at least there is something displayed.

  • Lion login screen problems on Mid 2009 MacBook Pro

After upgrading my wife's Mid 2009 MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Lion we are seeing weird behavior on the login screen after the computer wakes from sleep mode.
The screen is only partially drawn (usually the top left 1/4 of the screen), and the grey background is shown instead of her desktop background picture. When you move the mouse around on the screen, it repaints blocks on the screen where the pointer has been.
This only seems to happen when the machine sleeps for a long period of time, e.g., overnight. When it just sleeps for a little while we don't see the issue.
When searching the forums for anyone else with the problem, several folks said that there was an issue with the video drivers for the 9400M card and recommended switching to the 9600M GT, but her machine only has the 9400M in it.
All other aspects of the system work fine.
Anyone else seeing this? Any clues?

Surprised there hasn't been anyone else experiencing this issue.
    I have seen this on 2 new MBP 2.3mhz i5's with the Intel HD 3000 384mb graphics, Lion 10.7.3 & 10.7.4.
Also with the latest Lion firmware for the late 2011 MBP's that addresses compatibility and stability issues.
Hopefully there is a fix soon because the painting on my locked screen to login is getting annoying

  • Problems with early 2011 MacBook Pro 13" 2.7 GHz / OWC Mercury Extreme Pro

*Has anyone else experienced issues getting their OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD working in the early 2011 MacBook Pros?*
I am having difficulties getting OS X installed on the new OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 240 GB. When I install the SSD in place of the factory HDD and boot from the 10.6.6 reinstallation DVD the SSD is not visible to the installation program. If I quit the 10.6.6 installer and run Disk Utility (from the 10.6.6 installation DVD) the SSD is not visible. If I quit Disk Utility and run System Profiler (from the 10.6.6. installation DVD) the drive is visible and firmware and serial numbers are displayed. So like the drive is visible to OS X but the installer / Disk Utility can not see it.
If I put the SSD in an external USB enclosure it is visible - I can format the drive and copy files to it.
I also tried installing the SSD in place of the factory HDD, putting the HDD in a USB enclosure, booting from the OS X installation on the HDD and running the OS X installer from the 10.6.6 DVD. I was able to select the SSD as the target for the installation and the initial file copy was OK, but when the laptop restarted during the installation the SSD would not boot. The grey folder icon with the flashing question mark was displayed instead. Holding down Option while booting only gave me the option to boot from the DVD.
I also tried resetting the NVRAM and SMC of the MacBook Pro - this did not resolve the issue.
I spoke to OWC support who said they did not know of any compatibility issues with the new MacBook Pros and suggested I request a replacement.
The firmware version of the SSD is 350a13f0

This is my exact problem. I have had 2 of these drives so far and both of them have had the same problem with installation internally. The first one I was able to get operational using the method you described, ie: put the OWC SSD in an external case (FW800 was my choice) and install it there. But I encountered the sleep issues, so I sent it back for a replacement.
The second drive I was finally able to install using the second method, but now the computer regularly locks up. So I'm going to call again and hopefully the third try will work.
Just to clarify. The first drive had sleep issues, but had the older firmware. The second drive had the newer firmware (360 I think it is) and didn't have the sleep issues, but locks up while running.
I'm so irritated on how many hours I've spent on this issue. And their support department, though very nice, wasn't helpful at all. It's as if they never heard of this problem.

  • Has anyone been having problems with bluetooth in Macbook PRO after upgrading to Mavericks?

    Hello,
Ever since I upgrade my 13inch (early 2011) Macbook PRO to OS X Mavericks I have been experiencing problems with bluetooth connectivity. Suddenly my Magic Mouse stops working and I cannot connect it back. Also I try turning off the bluetooth function but is not possible. The only workaround I have found is to restart the system.
    I appreciate any help.

  • Anyone having problems with Lion on MacBook Pro 15"?

I upgraded to Lion through the App Store the day it came out and have had nothing but problems ever since. Snow Leopard was running fine. Lion would cause random application crashes all the time. I had to constantly run Disk Utility to repair permissions and repair the disk. I am currently reinstalling Snow Leopard.

    I'm back!
Frustrated by multiple install tries and calls to Apple Support, and in a process of elimination, I took my MacBook Pro 15" 5,1 to an Apple Store, and they ran all the hardware diagnostic tests, and found nothing wrong with it.
    So...
1 - I bought and installed a new battery as mine was starting to bulge a little (it had still passed the test).
2 - I put the original 4GB RAM back in it.
3 - I reformatted the internal drive (again).
4 - I ran the Lion installer and it made it all the way through the process.
5 - I did not use Migration Assistant... just left a clean Lion install on the MacBook Pro.
6 - Then I re-installed my 8GB RAM and booted up - it worked fine.
7 - I then drag-copied all my user files from my Time Machine back-up disk.
8 - I reinstalled all my application software from original disks and installers (no drag copies from backups).
Lion running on my MacBook Pro has been stable ever since.
    CONCLUSIONS
    • Lion doesn't like certain third-party RAM that worked fine under Snow Leopard.
    • The Migration Assistant is also worthless in some circumstances.
    • Time Machine is worthless in some circumstances.
    • As a Mac owner, user and customer since 1987, I expected better from Apple in a major software upgrade like this.

  • What is the problem with 15-inch Macbook Pro model 2011 after connecting to TV with HDMI chord?

Today we connected a 15-inch Macbook Pro model 2011 with HDMI chord to an Insigna Television. We plugged and unplugged couple of times. But recently the macbook pro is having technical issues. The following symptoms are:
    1. Macbook pro turns on and off
    2. The screen stays blue and keeps loading but does not load to the desktop so you can't access to anywhere
    3. The screen sometimes becomes fuzzy and the apple logo that shows before it loads to the desktop is fuzzy
    4. Sometimes fuzzy lines appear on the screen like you see on television when there's a bad signal
    5. The screen stays blue
    6. Sometimes little specks appear on the screen
Only thing we did was turn it off and restart but it still leads to the same symptoms above.
Does anyone have any clue what caused this problem? I am guessing it is due to the connection to the HDMI chord, since we didn't turn the macbook on and off when we plugged it, rather we just unplugged and plugged the chord while the macbook is running.
Another theory might be watching movies from an online source but the first theory seems to make more sense.
We scheduled a meeting with the genius bar tomorrow but does anyone might have any clue? And also any ideas how to fix this? This is an emergency because there are important files on the macbook we didn't back up and we hope the files are safe and we need to use the macbook ASAP. Let us know anything that might have caused this and/or any solutions or help. That would be appreciated and thank you.

Hey there! Welcome to the Discrete GPU issue clube ... post your relate here >>> 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card
And for GOD SAKE! Call Apple to tell them that you're another user with such problem ...  that action can improve a future recall. BTW the fix price for your problem is around U$ 1000,00 ... that's the meaning of the recall attempt

  • Problems with mail in macbook pro

Hi there! I'm quite new to mac and i'm having a problem that i don't know how to solve, I configured my mail app in my macbook pro (10.7) to my hotmail account, it retreives all my mail but it marks it all as unread, so i end up with 1600 un read messages that are already read in my hotmail inbox, the same when i get a new mail from someone and i open it from my iphone or at the hotmail website it still shows it as unread in my mail app in my macbook.
Does anyone knows how can i keep it sync? so when i get a new mail and i check it in my iphone it doesn't show still as unread in my mac's mail app?
    Thanks a lot!

This is an inherent [feature|problem] with using POP - each client keeps track of which messages have been read or not, and has no idea of what other clients have done.
The typical solution is to use IMAP rather than POP. IMAP keeps that data on the server, so it's easy for clients to see what's new and what isn't.
I have no idea whether hotmail support IMAP, though. If they don't then consider changing your setup to a different provider if needs be.

Overheating happens when I use heavy graphics applications. At the moment, MBP cold, but the problem occurred. But if the application is rolled up and open again, the artifacts disappear. • Problem with battery for MacBook Pro 2007

I have a problem with battery that was replaced during video card service 1.5 years ago
Battery health was around 80% and it stopped to work, I continued to use notebook with power cable and after week the battery become like this!
spoke with person in Apple store and got answer that it is not covered by Apple and I will need to buy another new battery.
For me it looks like manufacturing problem and I'm not expecting that after 1 year my battery will die like this! Thanks that it didn't explode!
What I should do in such case?

    Thanks for your reply!
All my battery story is ending with bad taste...
I always relied on quality of the Apple products, it brought me to change all computers and phones to Apple brand. I was ready to pay extra for their products...
This battery has an Apple brand on it and I'm expecting that Apple will take some responsibility for it.
First battery on my MacBook Pro 2007 worked without any problem for 4 years, then it was replaced by Apple service tech person for unknown reason. This "new" battery failed just after ending of 1 year warranty coverage and even deformed in such scarry way. And now I don't have any option to ask if there is possibility that I'm experience a manufacturing defect! And I know that it is possible, internet is full of negative comments for these batteries!
Now I'm asking myself again, if it worst to buy Apple products? Are these products have proper quality?
