I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:

If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

I am having this problem. At first with the new iPhone 5, and then with the iPad 2. I am not sure why this is happening.
My gut feeling is this is an iO6 issue and here's why -
The problem mainly occurs with apps. I have about 150 apps, and when I plugged in the phone, iTunes went to sync all of them. The process would hang up after about 20 - 30 apps were loaded onto the phone. I could tell where about the process hung up because the apps on the phone showed up as "waiting".
Then on the iPad 2 I plugged in to sync and saw there was a huge "Other" component in my storage. It required me to restore the iPad 2 from backup. With this restore the same issues occurred - putting the apps back on the iPad would hang up. The videos on the iPad also got stuck - maybe after about 10 hours of videos transfered iTunes crashed.
My solution has been to soft reset the device, restart Windows, and continue the process until it's complete. This is remarkably inefficient and time-intensive but everything works with patience.
I have been wondering if others have had these same problems. -

Probably because you have an iPhone 3G and 4.2.1 is the latest update that you can get for that phone - it is too old to support anything further.
If you have an iPhone 4, then connect the phone to iTunes to update it and ensure that you have the latest version of iTunes too. -

Refer this article to reset Winsock to it's default. Your PCTools may have inserted LSP.

I figured it out!
I read a solution for something that sounded similar.
Anyone in similar position:
Open iTunes app on iPhone, and pick an option from bottom, such as music. Then scroll down to bottom of page and where your iTunes ID is, press on it, and pick sign out.
Then return to home screen, and double press home button and press and hold on first icon showing, until a minus symbol appears in the top left of icons present. Press on each minus symbol on each app in turn, until all app icons have disappeared. Then Restart the phone by pressing and hold the home button and the on/off/standby button at top of phone, until the apple symbol appears in centre of blank screen.
Swipe to turn phone fully on and open settings and scroll down to iTunes and apps option and tap that. Pick sign in and put in your apple ID, it will accept it and then return to home screen and open iTunes a you'll find it works fine
Simple really, but some like me won't think f this themselves!

iMac purchased in January 2011. Updating from snow leopard 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion. Download will not complete. At 75% downloaded it stops and says to check Internet connection. What should I do? Before the download I used Disk Utility to check/repair permissions, all software is up to date, and I emptied the trash.
First, you are downloading Mountain Lion, so this error is not related to your disk drive. The problem is apparently with the internet connection between the computer and your router or your modem and Apple's servers. So it's an internet connection issue.
At your end you can verify your connection is active and working. If you are using wireless then try using an Ethernet connection instead. -

These ones are typically caused by underlying problems on the PC that also often cause Windows Updates to fail to install. If we can fix the Windows Update trouble, we can usually get the iTunes trouble cleaned up en passant.
Go into your Windows update and try to check for new updates. If updates install, stock up on the ones you're behind on, restarting the PC if requested to do so. After the restart, try installing iTunes again. Does it go through this time for you?
If windows updates fail to install, go into your Update History and doubleclick the failures. What alphanumeric codes appear for you? Are they also 8007054F, or some other number? (If they're another number, what number are you getting?) -

You either need to go somewhere with a MUCH stronger and faster WiFi signal or do the update using your computer and iTunes.

I'd suggest you check your iPhone's software and upgrade it if it is not the latest one. If you already have the latest iOS version I'd make sure everything is plugged-in properly (note if the iPhone is charges when you plug it in) or unplug your iPhone and plug it back, maybe you ejected it accidentally.
Do you sync your iPhone over Wi-Fi? Maybe if you mark this option you cannot sync it using the wire...
If it's still not working I'd restore the iPhone and try it again.
