Because line-in has been removed.
It does allow for an Apple headset with mic., but I don't know if it would work with third-party ones.
You'll need to use a Griffin iMic or similar to use line-in via a USB port.
The same goes for the 15" retina, the newest MBA and the new iMac (whenever it finally arrives).

you will be ok updating to the new software but there will be some trade off. i have 3 macbooks 2006 that are all running the latest versions.
some of the trade off are
1-2 less of battery life
slow wake ups from sleep
slower start up time about 30-40 seconds longer then what you have now
the operating system will use high % of your processer while idealing
these are not the things you want to hear about a new os compared to the old one but this is how it is even with a new macbook pro. but it's not the end of the world. just make sure you have at least more then 2GB of ram and have a good harddrive and you will be ok.

Your points match mine pretty well,though here are some thoughts:
1. I thought about this theory myself this morning (iTunes possibly causing more issues), but I haven't been able to verify it.
2. When I set up a new user it seemed better for a while, but the issue croppped back up. Yesterday I fully wiped the machine and reinstalled from scratch. I did not reimport my user from TimeMachine, but the problem has come back. My thinking was that I might have some really old software or prefs hanging around causing the issue. No dice.
3. This is my current theory of the issue, so my next step will be to pull the RAM from Crucial and see how the system behves. IF that doesn't eliminate the problem, I'll pull the factory installed RAM and replace it with the 3rd party RAM. The odd thing is how many people seem to have similar issues - I know two personally, and have seen several posts on forums. I think the most common point for this happening was the 10.7.2 update, which would point to software as the culprit.
4. That matches my experience.
My hope is that this will be repaired in the forthcoming 10.7.3 release (current production version is 10.7.2), but otuside of what I noted above, I'm at a loss.

But i really wonder how you did that. did you always switch between design view and preview view, then change the key position for 2px then switch back, to align the four letters? because i imagine that can get really frustrating, if you have a logo consisting of 58 parts instead of 4!:)

Run MDP to HDMI for picture. Use a cable like this to run sound from your audio out on your Mac to your TV's audio in. That's about all you can do.

Try booting to the Recovery drive, running Disk Utility and Repair disk and Repair Permissions.
1. Reboot and immediately hold down command and R (two keys).
2. When you see the screen shown on this page, select Disk Utility and continue.
3. When DU is running, select the hard drove on the left, First Aid and Repair Disk.
4. After Repair Disk, click Repair Permissions.
Quit DU and restart.

Dvd-r's work perfectly on my macbook but some dont work on a PC and an imac

i've burned 5 dvd-r's (using idvd) over the past few weeks, checking them all on my macbook before taking them to work for presentations.
2 of the 5 have worked perfectly on the work PC and imacs but 3 have just shown up as blank dvd's on both the imacs and the PC. All work perfectly on my macbook!
Anyone got any ideas why this is happening? And what I can do to prevent it? The first week was a nightmare but i managed to make the presentation work anyway, this week, luckily the majority of video was on the disk that worked but another disk was just seen as blank by the PC and imac..
Next week, I'll be taking all the video elements of the presentation on a hard drive as well but its not ideal... Any ideas??

The media is from the same batch i've been using for a while (and TY dye so not cheap) and two of the five i made worked perfectly in these computers.
It wasn't just the PC either. An iMac wouldnt recognise them either.
My macbook still plays them all fine.
Could it be the dvd burner in my macbook is not compatible with newer machines? My macbook is from mid 2008 and the iMac I tried it on are newer than that.
I'm also wondering if my macbook burner has a dirty lens? If it does, could that cause these problems??

One way that your normal default preferences could be changed is by an extension, and another is by external software creating a user.js file. If this problem recurs, you can investigate both of those.

Hi, I have a late October 2008 Macbook Pro Unibody which I wanted to use my Magma Expressbox card with. I had a Silver Macbook Pro before which this worked fine with but for some reason my newer Macbook Pro does not even recognize the Expresscard slot?

Highly anooying as I can't even use the Express Card slot at all, due to the fact the Macbook doesn't even recognize it exists. Has anyone else had this problem. If so, how was it fixed? I only upgraded my Macbook Pro due to the fact Ineeded a better performance but I still need my Expressbox1 to work with my UAD DSP card. Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

After trying lots I found now in 'Airport Utility is 'unable to detect any airport wireless devises.....'
There is no provider to be seen in airport utility and only 'rescan' is an option with no results...
even so I am connected and can browse the net receive mail etc. and the outgoing 'mail server' is set to the internet provider I am connected to.
Can you enlighten me what can I do I need to use my e-mail program urgently !!!

I'm not sure what "IPS wireless" is, but unless you have an Apple Wi-Fi base station (such as a Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme, or AirPort Express), AirPort Utility won't see anything.
You might try defining a new SMTP server to see if that will work any better.
By the way, the subject field for these messages isn't intended to hold a lot of text. Put a short description of your problem in the subject field and save the rest of your message for the body field.
