I am running Mac OSx Lion 10.7.2. My problem is I can't search on an external network server for a file with the finder toolbar anymore. Nothing shows up and it will not search. I was able to in snow-leopard and am no longer able to w. Lion. Suggestions?

I am running Mac OSx Lion 10.7.2.
My issue is that I am not able to run a search in the finder toolabar on a network server. No files show up nor does it search on the server anymore. I was able to run the search in snow-leopard and am no longer able to do so with Lion. Is there a preference I can change or some kind of app or program I can download that will help me with this issue? This is extremely problematic for me as I am searching for files all day everyday. Thank you!

Hello,
It isn't the fw in Network you want o use or look at, that's for something completely different.
My first suspect is the Power Adapter on the LaCie has gone.
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what is listed there?
Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device. A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
1. Shut the machine down.
2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
3. leave it for 10 minutes.
4. Connect back up and reboot.

Hi,
Snow Leopard is not a download. It only comes on Disk to Install.
It would bring you iChat 5
Only iChat 5 will work in Snow Leopard.
Check if you have tow Versions of iChat.
It should be in the Applications Folder but will get missed in the Upgrade process if it is in a sub folder (which in turn the DOCK icon may be linked to)

There's two different versions of Flash. The ActiveX version for IE, and the Plugin version for other browsers. Did you install the correct version? This forum's software doesn't thing that Flash is installed for Firefox or the Plugin is disabled.
1.Download the Flash setup file from here:
[http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe Adobe Flash - Plugin version].
Save it to your Desktop.
2. Close Firefox using File > Exit
then check the Task Manager > Processes tab to make sure '''firefox.exe''' is closed,
{XP: Ctrl+Alt+Del, Vista: Shift+Ctrl+ESC = Processes tab}
3. Then run the Flash setup file from your Desktop.
4. Start Firefox and test your installation here: https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
* On Vista and Windows 7 you may need to run the plugin installer as Administrator by starting the installer via the right-click context menu if you do not get an UAC prompt to ask for permission to continue (i.e nothing seems to happen).
• HT201209 Want to set up my children's IPad's with their own Apple ID. Trying to set up yahoo accounts and it will not allow me to do this. I wan them only to be able to purchase from rdeemed gift cards but it keeps asking me to update credit card info

Want to create Apple ID for both my children's IPad's. Tried creating new email account for my son and it will not let me. I want them to be only able to purchase from redeemed gift cards and everytime it asks me to update credit card info on their Ipad.

Look, I understand I still need a card attached to the account. The problem is, it won't accept my card because I only have 87 cents in my bank account right now.
If I had known there would be so much trouble with the iTunes card, I would have just put the cash in my bank account in the morning instead of buying an iTunes card (I didn't expect the banks to be open on Thanksgiving of course).
Apple will only accept cards that have a balance. The balance is so small in my account that it won't accept it as a valid card.
I'm going to have to contact Apple anyway to reset the security questions. That's obvious. Your answers were not exactly helpful. You didn't tell me anything I don't already know, but thanks for trying to be helpful.

• Why might extracted Snow Leopard MacBookPro drive no longer boot under IMAC Lion?

I'm hoping someone can give a likely explanation for the following sequence of events, and also recommend some next steps. I've been backing up, using Time Machine on a partitioned drive, my 2008 IMAC with Lion and my 2008 MacBookPro with Snow Leopard. Being out of town for the last 3 months, MBP backups were not possible and Murphy's law kicked in as the MBP refused to boot, no chime and black screen. Tried all the discussion group suggestions and then returned home to visit the Apple store.
1. Apple store said it was my logic board and repair would be $310, but if the hard drive was a problem Apple Repair would just swap it out. Apple store would do backup of the drive before sending it for repair if I provided an empty drive.
2. As I didn't have a spare drive, I purchased an OWC USB 3.0 enclosure kit and inserted the drive from the MBP.
3. Plugging into the running IMAC, it came up and everything looked good. TIme Machine recognize the new drive and included it in its list of devices to NOT backup.
4. I decided to see if I could boot the IMAC from this MBP drive by doing a restart with the option key held. It gave me the choice and it worked. Everything looked good and I was able to update my mail and to print. I decided to have Time Machine do a backup and included the IMAC internal drive in the list of devices NOT to backup. Time Machine warned that this MBP was a new computer and that i'd not be able to go back, which concerned me as the whole purpose is to be able to move to a new system if necessary. I did a backup anyway and it copied about 25 GB of some 158 GB so it must have been an update. Everything looked good.
5. I then did a restart and came up under Lion. However the MBP drive was no longer visible on the desktop, but the system recognized that the OWC MBP drive was USB connected. This was a concern.
6. I did a shut down of the IMAC and removed the MBP drive. Rebooted IMAC and then inserted USB MBP drive. It came up this time. Its contents looked good.
7. I then did a restart with the option key held. It gave me the choice to boot from the MBP drive as before and I took it. However it hung with a gray screen, circle with slash, and spinning wheel. No activity from the MBP so I forced IMAC shutdown and removed the MBP drive.
8. Booted the IMAC, but can not get the MBP drive to appear on the desktop although it is recognized as a USB device. No activity from the MBP drive as indicated by no flashing of its light.
I'm mystified as to what has happened. Have I corrupted the MBP drive, or is it likely a hardware failure? I'm thinking about a new computer, but was staying with Snow Leopard as it was only way to keep my scanner working. It was momentarily convenient to be able to boot into Snow Leopard and to work as usual. What can I do with my TIme Machine backup of the MBP if the MBP drive is corrupted? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Pete, but it doesn't solve my problem.
Apple does something to the recovery partition to make it invisible. When I was trying to setup my 16GB USB stick drive as a "Recoverable Partition", since I don't have one on my main Lion drive, it made it invisible also. But during the process it failed to finish but has left my USB drive invisible under Lion and nothing that I've tried has been able to undue that. (See Above). What is it that I need to do to get my USB Flash drive visible again under Lion. It is visible under Snow Leopard and it is visible under the lion install utitlties (I made a installer DVD from original internet downloaded Lion installer) but not under disk utilities on lion or the lion desktop! I've reformated under both the above(Snow Leopard & Installer utilities) were I had access to the USB Drive but that didn't undue whatever Apple does to make the recovery partition and my USB Drive invisible because once I boot back into Lion, it's still not there! So the $64,000 question is how do I get my USB Flash drive visible again under Lion?
Hope this help you to understand my situration.

• Previously rock solid MacPro ('08) crashed and now will not boot up past a screen of black, grey and white blocks covered in pink artefacts. Lion recently installed. Can this old warhorse be saved?

Yesterday the trusted and loyal MacPro froze and on reboot kept going straight to a screen which looks like a modern art collaboration between Kasparov, a robot and the ghost of Jackson Pollock. You can see the artwork in the pictures below.
Lion has recently been installed.
Main programmes used are Logic and Final Cut Pro.
I have taken the machine apart and dusted everything down, talked sternly to the ciruit boards, offered bribes to the CPU and even played it Salsa - I figured that this works in breaking the spirits of kidnappers, so it may work with the hard disk.
Nada.
There is a suspicion lingering that the computer was aware of a make or break week of editing coming up and decided to stop working in protest (it is getting on a bit), so I let it rest for a bit before trying another reboot.
Still no luck.
Short of going Basil Fawlty on it, is there anything I can do?
Help!

Time to put it aside to pasture.... the 8800GT has some known issues.
Better to replace it now while you can.
As for your system, w/o another gpu but I'd give 99.999% that you are fine.
For dust I juse a powerful 500W.
http://www.amazon.com/Metro-Vacuum-ED500-500-Watt-Electric/dp/B001J4ZOAW/
Other than the card working its way loose (hard to do) or the 6-pin aux power cable being loose etc.
Someone said that "post Lion" that many Mac Pro owners have not been able to use their OEM DVD with Apple Hardware Test (the test is on a hidden partition).
$249 isn't totally bad investment to keep it running.
Other than FBDIMMs self destructing and being fried @ temps above 72*C and having errors of some sort... which is also solvable.
And while / IF you can, make sure you have made bootable clone of your system and data, and have some kind of current TimeMachine backup.

• HT4528 my iphone is not working, I have tried to reset and access to activate it and it will not let me, saying I have incorrect apple id and password! Help please!

Can someone help me with my apple id reset to get my iphone to work please?

Enter your correct Apple ID and password.
If you bought the phone used you have encountered activation lock installed by the prior owner. You will not be able to get past the activation lock without the proper credentials. Contact the prior owner. If the prior owner does not know the details the device is probably stolen and you have lost your money.
If you bought the phone new from Apple take it back to the store with your receipt so that Apple can help you.

• My Iphone 4s suddenly turned off, and now will not reset. I've done recovery 15 times and each time it says it has failed and prompts me to do it again! Help!!!

Today my phone was working perfectly, about 2 days after updating to IOS 7.0.3. I came back to my desk, and then the screen wouldn't turn back on. After I plugged it into my Imac at work, it gave me the silver apple sign, but then it would turn off, then apple back on, then off... and so on...
I read all of these posts on the community, so I did the reset (did all sorts of variations from 10 seconds to a full minute) seconds while holding power and the home button... nothing. Then tried a reboot by holding for 10 seconds, letting go of power, and then plugging my phone into my computer which prompted the itunes and plug sign on the screen, which also prompted Itunes to do a recovery. Went through recovery, and it FAILED. I've done this cycle now 15 times, on 2 different computers, one an Imac, and one my windows laptop at home. Tried with an old version of Itunes, and an updated Itunes.... NOTHING WORKS! Do I have to drive 3 hours to have an apple store look at it???? Help!!

According to this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694#error21
Error 21- These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. Use the steps to troubleshoot security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See the steps under the heading "Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store." If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.
The error on the Mac is odd though. 2100 is not in the article. What version of the Mac Operating system are you running?

• Mail will not delete content of RSS feed in Snow Leopard OSX Mail Update

I have 2 RSS feeds that subscribe to in Safari and read in Mail. When I delete a link in the feed in Mail and they go to the Trash - all of the links reappear when I relaunch Mail ... the same link reappears in the RSS feed. I have deleted the links, quit Mail, re-subscribed to the RSS feed in Safari - but it still happens. It is as if you can never delete the links in the RSS feed. Did not have this problem prior to updating to Snow Leopard. Anyone know whey that is? Or is the RSS feature in Safari just poorly designed and inadequate?

• Late 2007 MacBook White Will Not Update After Installation of 10.6 Snow Leopard

I'm wondering if anyone can help me with this problem and hopefully diagnosis it as a non-motherboard or logic board issue.
Had 10.7.8 installed successfully for 4-6 months, upgraded from 10.6.8, the end of Snow Leopard.
Had to force shut down computer after external hd wouldn't eject. After restarting, computer never restarted (was stuck on Apple/spinning wheel).
I have tried everything, PRAM reset, SMC reset, hard reset (battery out, power button 5-10 seconds), recovery mode reinstall of Lion, reinstall of Snow Leopard pre-hd format, zero hd format + reinstall of snow leopard, reinstall of original install disk 10.5 to failed software update.
I've literally tried everything. I'm able to reinstall base OS' but not update to recent versions either 10.5.8 or 10.6.8 to upgrade back up to 10.7.5 Lion.
Oh, and don't tell me to do a D at start up for a hardware test, it came back with nothing wrong, and my 500gb western digital hd (1 month old) has been verified and seems to be ok and repaired permissions which there were a lot but still seemed to be ok after.
Anyone have any advice? Motherboards are around 400$ from MacMall.
It'd be great not to have to throw this thing away as it's still a solid work/office computer.
Or should I just stick to 10.6 base Snow Leopard?
Thanks everyone!
Chase

OK, now you need to update it to 10.6.8: Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Sign into the App Store with the Apple ID you used to purchase Lion. Click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. Look for your Lion purchase in the list and click on the Download/Install button.
I suggest for the future you read this:
Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/
Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button.
Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move
the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You
must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes
installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left
side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until
the process has completed.
d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side
list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the
button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash
drive size.
3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
a. Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
b. Open Disk Utility.
c. Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
d. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
e. Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
f. Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
g. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
As an alternative to the above (you still have to do your own download of Lion/Mountain Lion) you can try using Lion DiskMaker 2.0 that automates the process of Steps 2 through 4.

• TS4036 I need to restore my iphone 5. Yesterday there was an icloud backup dated 4/1/14. Today I only see a backup with the lost data from 4/4/14. Itunes will not recognize my device, yet it is charging and importing pictures. Any suggestions?

Yesterday my autistic daughter was using my phone, as she often does. Some things got deleted. I went to do a restore and it showed the last backup was 4/1/14. My phone auto synced at 10:51 AM on 4/3/14. I had to leave, and when I came back itunes no longer recognized my phone. Its charging, it can import pictures, but nothing on itunes works. I wanted to do a restore, but now I only see the 10:51 backup, which is after selected items were deleted.
My questions: How can I make Itunes recognize my iphone (running windows 8) How can I find the backup from 4/1/14, as it has the most current information?
Any help would be appreciated.
