I am trying to download an app and keep getting this error message: "Could not sign in. An unknown error has occurred. I have tried shutting down and restarting. I've tried changing the password. I get the error message with free and not free apps. Any suggestions on how to fix?
Reports are that this is a problem with the iTunes Store that they're working on. Some people have had success after signing out of their account and back in. If that doesn't work for you, wait a few hours or perhaps until tomorrow and by then they may have the problem sorted out.

i know my password is correct, i signed in on my macbook and on my imac and no issue there.
i called apple and they coulnd't figure out what it is, i reset my network settings and same thing. of course i can't do a restore because i'm at work and we don't have the new lighting cords here for me to hook up to my imacI experienced this problem, too -- and with the help of an Apple support rep, figured out a way out.
Go into Settings and turn off automatic date and time, and set your phone back a year. Then go back and turn automating date and time back on, to get back to the present. Now go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores, click on your AppleID, and re-enter it and your password. Finally, go back to the App Store (or iTunes Store) and try to download what you had been trying before -- and if you're like me, it will now pop up with a new set of Terms and Conditions for you to approve. After you approve, you'll be able to download whatever you had been trying to.
It appeared, in my case, that Apple needed to present me with a new Terms & Conditions to approve, but for some reason, iOS 6 and the Apple mother ship weren't communicating correctly about how to do that, and I was stuck with the "Could Not Sign In" message. Changing the iPhone's time and/or re-signing in via Settings > iTunes & App Stores resolved the roadblock for some reason. Hope this works for others as well! -

You need to reinstall the App Store.
Use Lion Recovery to do that. -

thanksif itunes can no longer pickup your ipod, and you cant even do anything to your ipod, your best option is to either call apple care, or just take it to the nearest apple shop. i had a similar problem, mines currently at apple care repairs and they might just end up giving me a replacement.

I've just bought an iPad mini today. I have also created an Apple ID which is work fine with FaceTime and iMessage (already test call and sent text). But when I tried to login to App Store it said "Could Not Sign In. An unknown error has occurred". I tried login with my son's account and it work fine. It just won't accept my newly create ID. I'm sure my password is correct because I can use it to login to this Support Communities page.
What should I do?Try refreshing the ID by signing out, restart the iPad and then sign in again..

Want to get a free app but keep getting this response ' we could not complete your itune store request an unknown error occured (-9808)'?
I've done a search on here and haven't found any solutions posted for it for windows computers. You could try posting in the iTunes For Windows forum and see if you get any suggestions in there (are you able to download other items from the store e.g. a free app ?) - I use a Mac, the only things that I could think of to suggest trying is see if you get the same error on a different iTunes library :
creating and/or opening a different iTunes library : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
or using a different user account on your computer in case it's a problem with that user account.
But you may want to try the iTunes For Windows forum first, apart from anything else you are likely to get better help for the above -

All my PW, Site URL and folder on server are correct /public_html. (I've used them to upload to FileZilla), with no problem except two pages are missing!

I am getting the error "ipad could not be restored. an unknown error occurred (3194)" while trying to restore. tried steps 2 n 3 but stil error persists!
When I restart my iPad the connect to iTunes comes up and stays on until it shuts down again, I have read a report from Apple support suggesting I reinstall iTunes so I might try that again and also your suggestion which i shall also try, but thanks again - rg1547

To finish the upgrade setup, can't get past the screen where you need to log in with your apple id and password. Error message appears "could not sign in" "Could not communicate with the server." Tried a reboot, but that didn't work or get us anywhere either.
Go to Settings then down to Facebook then select account then delete account and select remove info and re enter your user name and password and then it will work again

I've downloaded the latest iTunes, set the DNS to 8.8.4.4, set the search domain to google.com, reset my Apple ID and password, restarted iPhone 4, closed out of the iTunes Store App, reset the router, reset the internet connection etc. etc. with no luck still. Everything else on the iPhone and internet connection is 100% functional with the exception of me being able to connect to the iTunes Store to download an app. Why? How do I fix it? Installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo may help this.
Restart your Mac after installing the combo then try downloading Lion.
It's ok to install the combo even though you are already running v10.6.8
BEFORE you do this make sure your Mac meets Lion's requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OSX v10.6.6 or later (V10.6.8 recommended)
