A erase of the drive or boot partition is not always necessary.
Flashing question mark at boot could be a easy fix, sometimes it's the firmware that simply forgot what bootable volume to boot from.
Try holding the Option key down while booting the machine, a choice of bootable options appears, select your OS X and boot up.
When you get in, head to System Preferences > Startup disk and set it again new. This will tell the firmware what to boot from. Test it to see.
Now if you don't have a selection of bootable options, it could be that the drive is dead, or OS X is erased or corrupted so it can't boot.
You'll have to run through this list of fixes to see what's going on, if you need a hardware fix or what, I've also included links if you can't fix it and need to recover your data etc.
(If it's not remmebering your boot selection then also run through the list to reset things.)

  • Having downloaded Mavericks to my IMac I now find Time Machine couldn't back up to the Time Machine HDD. I am using a WD 1TB independent Hard drive

Having downloaded Mavericks to my IMac two weeks ago, I now find Time Machine couldn't back up to the Time Machine HDD. I am using a WD 1TB External Hard drive. I understand that a number of people have lost data since installing Mavericks on their Western Digital external drives. Has anyone any futher info.  Or is there a better way of backing up my computer. Thanks. Lee

When you boot the new machine for the first time, you'll be prompted to import your data from a Time Machine backup.

Whether or not you are able to recover the data off the drive yourself will depend on if the drive suffered any impact damage in the crash. You can buy USB SATA or IDE adapters (Intel and almost all G5 use SATA) that will let you connect your hard drive to a computer (like a flash drive) to see if you can recover the data. If the drive has suffered physical damage if may not mount.
If you know someone who has one of these adapters you could try using theirs, otherwise you could buy one but you take the risk of the data on the drive being non recoverable. Regardless, both are much cheaper than $1699!
(Alternatively, if you know of someone with a Mac Pro or PowerMac G5 they may be able to install the drive in their machine and try to boot from or mount it and copy the data off.)

  • Has anyone run across "error 1004" while trying to download apps on the iPad2? How can I resolve this?

I downloaded my work apps on my new iPad with no issues, but when i went to download apps from the App store "error 1004" would popup and then i could not continue with the install.  I did a soft reboot and was able to download one app, but the next one came up with this error again.  Any thoughts?

Try this. Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and cache (data in iOS 5) then restart the iPad. If that doesn't help, look here for more tips.

I am able to receive email, but when I try to reply I get an error message to go to settings and enter a password. My password is there and I have re-entered it with no success. How can I enable send feature from my I Phone?

You have to go to SMTP settings for your email account and enter a password there. Sended and receiving are two different activities managed by 2 differet servers, and each may require a separate user ID and password.

  • What do I do when trying to download Lion from the app store and the icon says "waiting" and then disappears.

I am trying to update a new iMac from Snow Leopard to Lion. When I click on install in the app store, the LIon icon jumps down into the dock and nothing happens. The message above the icon is "waiting." Eventually, the icon disappears. How can I install Lion?

    Start with http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/

  • I am trying to download Lion, but the icon just says waiting...

Lion appeared in my dock, but when I scroll over it all it says is OS X Lion - Waiting... The progress bar below has not made any progress either and I have been waiting at least an hour.  Any suggestions?

Go to the top menu, click on Window > Activity and set it to show all logs and see if it is actually doing anything at all.
    Pete

  • I am trying to download ebooks with with the adobe reader

I am trying to download ebooks with the adobe reader, i keep getting an error message saying it is an unsupported file.  how do i correct this?

What is the format of e-books.
Adobe Reader can only open PDF files.
If you have e-books with epub format, you might need Adobe Digital Edition : http://www.adobe.com/in/products/digital-editions/download.html

  • Will downloading Lion from the App Store (previously purchased) while on Mountain Lion erase my current OS?

    All,
I'm trying to download Lion from the App Store to make a bootable external hard drive. My concern is that the app store gives me a warning: "OS X 10.8 is already installed on this computer. Are you sure you want to download OS X 10.7?"
I'm not sure what this means and I would prefer not to risk erasing my current operating system. Does anyone have an idea?
    Thank you in advance.

Futhermore, I can't believe that the App Store allows you to download OS X Lion while you are in OS X Mountain Lion, because normally the App Store gives an error because you are running a newer Mac OS X.
If you just download OS X Lion, you won't lose OS X Mountain Lion, because just the installer will be downloaded onto the Applications folder. When the download finishes, the installer will show up, so close it, and use Lion Diskmaker to create an external drive with OS X Lion > http://liondiskmaker.com
As you are running OS X Mountain Lion, I recommend you to make an external drive with OS X Mountain Lion instead, if you can. That's because probably you will want to reinstall OS X Mountain Lion and not Lion

  • Trying to download Lion, it says it needs 2GB free space, I have 26 GB free space.  Now what?

I have been trying to download Lion from the App Store on my 17 inch iMac.  While my system says I have 26.36 GB available, a messages says"We could not complete your purchase  Mac OS x 10.7 requires at least 2 GB of memory.
Any ideas?  They're not talking RAM are they?  As I have only 1GB on this one.

Yes you need 2GB of RAM!!

  • Trying to copy out files from Time Machine backup.

I'm really frustrated here any help greatly appreciated. Order of events:-
    1. Basically I have been backing up my files through time machine on a external drive for my mac mini.
    2. I formatted my mac mini and sold it to my friend.
    3. I am having troubles copying files(iphoto library) from my timemachine backup on to my imac.
    4. I don't need anything else except a few particular files, but everytime i try drag or copy it gives me the 'no privilege/permission error'.
It's really frustrating i've changed permissions and everything and still doesn't work. It will work if I go copy the individual files. But any folders doesn't work.
    Any advice?
    Many thanks in advance.

That's correct. Time Machine backups retain the original ownership and permissions. So one user doesn't have access to another user's data. Usually, that's a good thing.

Your best bet may be to use +Migration Assistant+ to migrate the user account and selected data. Then log on as that user and use/copy the data as desired. See the pink box in #19 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
