I am trying to setup my new time capsule but it is not working. after entering the airport utility and locating the TC, after I tell the program to continue, the unit just disappear from the menu and the setup menu says there is an error. I tried using the wireless connection, and also the cable, but none worked. Any idea of what could be happening?

What are you setting it up as.. join wireless network .. the very worst setup, it will disappear.. reboot the whole network in order modem. router TC.. clients and it will likely reappear.
Tell us what network setup you are using..
If you setup with cable to a computer completely isolated from the network with TC also isolated.. finish the setup of everything you want. .before update.. then plug it into the network. .then restart everything in correct order.. it will work most of the time.

  • New MacBook (Aluminum), new Time Capsule (Dual-Band), backups not working

My Mom got a new (refurbished) 13.3" MacBook (Aluminum) and new (not refurbished) Time Capsule 500 GB (Dual-Band.) The Time Capsule is working great for wireless internet and we can copy files to and from it, but Time Machine backups are not working. I enabled Time Machine, selected her TC, and then when it tries to backup it sits at the preparing stage for a little while and then gives a very unhelpful "the backup failed" message. Unfortunately I don't have the exact error message, but it never gets out of the preparing phase. It doesn't stay in preparing forever, it only stays there for a minute or so before it gives up and reports the backup failed message and stops. It's unclear to me, searching these forums, if this problem is the same as others are reporting.
I've tried turning off Time Machine and back on, removing and reselecting the Time Capsule, etc. Nothing makes a difference. There are no backup files on the TC - it's brand new.
This happened out of the box, but I also tried installing the latest Time Capsule firmware. It didn't help.

Apple needs to create a configuration tool that configures all the Apple devices one owns by creating a network diagram using drag and drop symbols...
Sounds like a cool suggestion. If you want Apple to hear it, go to www.apple.com/feedback/timecapsule.html

Hi trying to set up new Time Capsule, it says I need a newer version of Airport Utility, how do I get this?

You need to be running at least the Lion (10.7.5) operating system or higher on your Mac, or using an iPhone or iPad with AirPort Utility installed on the device to set up the Time Capsule.
Check the System Requirements for the Time Capsule to confirm.
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3 or higher

  • I am trying to get my new Time Capsule to be recognized on my Air Port Utility on an Imac.

I am trying to get my new Time Capsule to be recognized on my Air Port Utility on an Imac.

It has to flash rapidly .. not the normal flashing which is slow.
Are you holding in reset and actually feeling it switch on.. and keep holding it until the LED goes crazy and flashes really fast.
If that is not working your TC is faulty.. I suggest you take it to Apple for testing.

  • Flashing Amber when trying to set up new Time Capsule

Tearing my hair out here!  Have spent all evening trying to set up my new Time Capsule but keep getting to the point where I turn on Airport Utility and it says it can't find any AirPort wireless device!  Flashing amber as well...... have reset/ unplugged/replugged / reconnected every cable variation I can think of!  NOT a techie but have usually managed to attach other Apple devices no bother. HELP!!

The amber flashing can be anything. Trivial or major.. look up the error in the airport utility.
Another question - how do I check what is on TC i.e. what has been backed up?
Also I have to get a new HD fitted so am hoping that everything is saved ready for me to take computer into repair shop!
Check the TM display.. by default unless you excluded something, everything is backed up.
But I would strongly recommend you do a disk image as well.. you can do this via disk utility or use a tool like superduper which I think is still free download.
Restoring after a disk replacement is much harder than you think.
Please study Pondini FAQ so you actually understand what TM does and can do..

There is a lot of very helpful info although it is perhaps in need of another reorganise.

Im trying to find my iPhone via iCloud but i does not show a map with its last know location. It only shows the menu options. My iPad and Mac show up but the map of my iPhone does not. Can anyone help?

If your phone is turned off or not connected to the Internet, you will be unable to locate it. Last known location is only stored for 24 hours.

  • Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?  It used to work with old Airport Extreme with updates thru Snow Leopard but now seems to only allow WEP encryption instead of WPA.

Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?  It used to work with old Airport Extreme network, run from a intel iMac with updates thru Mavericks but now seems to only allow WEP encryption instead of WPA and can't connect to Time Capsule.  Airport Extreme Base was controllable from either computer up through Snow Leopard (I didn't do any of the Lion upgrades).  Then when I upgraded to Mavericks I lost the ability to use Airport Utility with this hardware on the Sunflower but could still connect wirelessly to network without any problems.  But now with the Time Capsule upgrade the Sunflower is blocked from network by a dialogue that requests ony WEP password, not WPA pwd used by Time Capsule.  Neither can I use the old airport extreme base to extend the time capsule network since I can't input the correct password/encryption approach to join it.  Is there a work around?  Would a newer but old Airport Express be able to extend network to Sunflower?  Or maybe a third party wireless (such as Netgear, Dlink, etc) that has browser type control rather than special utility?
Another question--before I used MAC addresses to control who could access network.  Now on Time Capsule I don't see anything about this--so is it true now that the only access control is via WPA2 pwd now (which appears to be the encryption pwd and not the time capsule pwd)?

Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?
I can’t claim to completely grasp the issue(s) you’re describing, but the underlying problem is presumably your iMac’s obsolete AirPort card. Whatever the case, an obvious (if not particularly helpful) answer to your stated question would be to connect your iMac with an ethernet cable, using powerline adapters as an alternative if you don’t want to have wire running all over the place.
My still fully functional clamshell iBook, with an original AirPort card, connects wirelessly to my 4th Generation TC network by means of a cheap 802.11b/g/n USB Wi-Fi adapter. This might be an option for you too.
Another question--before I used MAC addresses to control who could access network.  Now on Time Capsule I don't see anything about this
When you edit your TC's settings the access controls appear under the Network tab, don't they?

  • I bought the external DVD player/burner for my Macbook.  I tried using it with my Dell laptop but it will not work.  Is it not configured to work with anything but apple operating systems?

I bought the external DVD player/burner for my Macbook.  I tried using it with my Dell laptop but it will not work.  Is it not configured to work with anything but apple operating systems?

If you purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive, it will only work with select Apple devices. It won't work, for example, on my Late 2011 model that has a SuperDrive built-in, but it will work with an Air, Retina model, new 'drive-less' iMacs, etc.
As far as I know, though, you can only hack the drive to work with some other Apple devices, but not with Windows PCs. Which is a shame as other, less expensive DVD/CD devices will work with just about any machine.
    Sorry,

I am trying to create a new Apple password but Apple doe not recognize my one and only email address, so I'm stuck on this merry-go-round. Any suggestions?

    inabird
you haven't told us what "Park" the "merry-go-round" is in
tell us what actions you take to get Apple not to recognize your email address...
Are you formatting it correctly? - username @ someDomain .com <- NO Spaces (I did it so the system wouldn't make an email link out of it)
Tell us what happens when you realize  that Apple is "not recognizing" your email. What message do you get, exactly? Take screenshot of the entire screen for context

You don't need a license or a serial number to download Lightroom, which is the problem you state you are having. What is the license you purchased, anyway? Can you give us details?

    Hello, flippytippi.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would need a little more information regarding what exactly you are experiencing when attempting to sync photos to better assist you.  However, here is a troubleshooting article that I would recommend going through.

  • Optimal Setup for New Time Capsule with Wireless AC

I'm curious to see what the hypotehtical optimal setup for my Time Capsule.  I understand that wireless speeds depend on a ton of factors and that part of getting the best connection is just trying different options.  I have a new Time Capsule that's connected to the following devices: iPhone 5S; new MacBook Air with wireless AC; old iMac from 2007; old AirPort Express that only supports b/g and a newish Apple TV that supports wireless N, I believe.  I was connecting to the network (which was not designated with the 5ghz) and I recently chose the option to label the 5ghz.  I'm using that now to stream music with the new iPhone and the Apple TV with no problems, but I have no longer have the option of using the old Airport express because it's an old one.  I'm thinking of just getting a new Airport Express and leaving it at that, but wanted to know if anyone has some thoughts on this.  I'm sure there's a more concise and direct way to ask this question, but my knowledge is pretty limited here.  Thanks in advance.

The Time Capsule is already set up for optimal performance when you open up the box.
You can assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network and point devices that are capable to that network. This works well if the device is located close to the Time Capsule.
But, 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so once you move a room or two away, or the signal has to pass through several walls, the 2.4 GHz will be stronger.....and probably faster as well.
But...your device will try to stay locked on the 5 GHz network since you set it up that way.
This type of setup may or may not work best for you.  For most users, it is simpler and more effective to use the default settings on the Time Capsule to have both bands use the same network name.
Then, your wireless devices will automatically connect to the signal with the best quality. Best quality may not be the fastest signal since there are lot of factors involved with signal quality. But, if you think about it a bit more, don't you want to have your wireless device connect to the signal with the best quality?
Some users swear by assigning a separate name to the 5 GHz band. I'm not one of them, but If it works well for them and they are happy, then there is no reason to change.
An older AirPort on your network is going to drag down the speeds. You need the new AirPort Express, or better yet an AirPort Extreme if you want to be able to extend the new 802.11ac signal.

  • I have copied my iTunes library to my time capsule. I am trying to point the iTunes to use the file within the time capsule but it does not show up. However I see the file when i open it thought the finder. Please assist.

    Hi,
    I will apprecite your help.
I find the copied file to time capsule though finder bt not when I open the pointer.
    can anyone help?
    Regards

No I have not watched a video to move iTunes.
You are trying to convince me that the video is correct.. but you are having issues..
I tend to consider Apple's documentation superior .. not that they always get it right.
If it doesn't work we need more info.
    Is this Mavericks?
Is the youtube video using Mavericks.. ?? If not then I suspect your problem is due to poor networking in Mavericks.
Ensure you follow the rules for SMB networking..
All names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Try manually mounting the hard disk in Finder via Go, Connect to Server.. make sure the TC is mounted before you try to connect to the library.
You will have constant problems because the TC is unsuitable for iTunes.
