I am unable to download ANY software updates whatsoever...

I am unable to download any software updates, whether it be Microsoft Office, Adobe or Apple updates. I run the update and I always ultimately get a message that there was an error (unspecified) and the update (du jour) could not be downloaded. I'm running Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 and have been unable to update to any newer version as a result of this issue. Any suggestions?

First things first.
Microsoft Office updates you get here:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads?pid=Mactopia_Office2011
Adobe updates you get here:
http://www.adobe.com/downloads/
Apple updates use Software Update.

  • I cant download any software updates please help!

I have had my Mac less than a week and I cant download any software updates.
I am using Mac OS X 10.6.6 everytime I try to update the software I get either this message
'The update could not be expanded and may have been corrupted' or  'An error occurred during installation'
I have tried to download each update separately with no luck.
I have also tried turning off screen saver and energy saving settings with no luck and I have tried downloading it at different times of the day.
Not sure what else I can do!
    Please Help! :/

Boot with the install disc that shipped with the machine, launch Disk Utility, and repair the disk. If that's successful, reinstall the OS, repair permissions, and try Software Update again.

  • Unable To Do Any Software Updates

I have been able to do any software updates for quite some time. My system is getting slower and slower and slower. What options do I have? Do I need to reinstall my 10.4 software? If so, how do I make sure everything is saved so I can access all of my files and applications?
    Thanks for any help.

If it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
    First I'd do this...
Free up another 10 GB of Space, then...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • I cannot do any software updates without downloading "Mac OS X 10.5", but I cant find it anywhere!!

My computer won't find any software updates, can't even do it manually.
Every time I go to download something from apple it says I can't without "Mac OS X 10.5". but I cannot find this update anywhere!
    HELP!!

You need to understand the difference between an Update and an Upgrade.
An Update is a free change within an existing Operating System. Such as the .11 added to 10.4.
An Upgrade is a complete new Operating System that must be purchased. Such as 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard.
You can upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 should run under10.6. See this list for compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/  You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/
I recently upgraded an older MacBook (model 1,1) straight from 10.4 to 10.6.
A retail 10.5 Leopard disk will run you over $200
Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard came out in July of 2009 and became obsolete in July of 2011 when 10.7 Lion was introduced. Unlike earlier Operating Systems which were removed from the Apple Store when a new OS came out Apple kept Snow Leopard around for a year until 10.8 Mountain Lion came out. When Mountain Lion came out they removed Snow Leopard and Lion from the online store.
The Early 2006 model 1,1 Core Duo can only run a maximum of 10.6 Snow Leopard. The models Late 2006 Core 2 Duos 2,1 through Early 2008 4,1 can only run a maximum of 10.7 Lion. The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1 can run 10.8 Mountain Lion.
The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list.
If they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already up to $100 on Amazon.

Getting an error message of unable to
check for software update when trying to update to
ios 8.0.2. Can someone help ??

    Howdy there otss1979,
It sounds like you are unable to download the iOS 8.0.2 update either, over the air, or using iTunes. If you are updating the software on your phone in Settings > General > software update I would recommend starting with this article:
Resolve issues with an over-the-air iOS update
If you are using iTunes, I would use this article instead:
Resolve iOS update and restore errors in iTunes
If you are getting a specific error number, the following article will help you get that resolved:
Resolve iOS update and restore errors
If this does not resolve the issue, could you please write the error message you are getting word for word for me?
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • Downloading Ipod software update 3.1.1 but get error 3259

What is wrong? I cannot seem to completely download the software update. After partially downloading the file, an error appears that the connection was timed out. Status: stopped (err = -3259)
I do not have a firewall up nor do I have anti-virus software. I'm running itunes 9.

Ok, I'm told that it's a timeout error due to internet connection. For whatever reason, when I tried downloading it again during the day, it worked fine. I don't know what the big difference would be from night to day.
    An apple expert emailed me:
I understand that you are receiving a message about connection error 3259 when trying to download your purchases.
I have confirmed that the iTunes Store is functioning and accepting connections. Therefore, the issue is likely related to your Internet connection, local network, or computer. I'm happy to provide some information that should help you connect to the iTunes Store again.
Error 3259 is a network timeout error. Sometimes this error can be caused by software on your computer that slows down the network connection. This error can also appear if you are downloading multiple items. I'd like to provide some steps that should help you successfully download your purchases.
It often helps to pause the download and then download items one at a time. These steps will walk you through doing this:
    1) Open iTunes.
    2) From the Store menu at the top, choose Check for Available Downloads. If you're unable to upgrade and are using iTunes 7, the option will say Check for Purchases.
    3) Enter your account name and password, then click Check. Your purchases should begin downloading.
    4) Under the STORE section on the left, click Downloads.
    5) Click the Pause All button in the lower-right corner. This will temporarily pause all of your downloads.
    6) To resume only one of the downloads, click the refresh button that appears to the right of one of the paused downloads.
Certain types of software can affect the way a computer sends and receives information from the Internet. Here are a few examples of these types of software:
    - Firewalls
    - Web accelerators
    - Ad filters
    - Virus protection software
If you have any of this kind of software installed on your computer, you will need to configure each of the applications to allow your internet connection to access iTunes freely. For instructions, please refer to the documentation that came with that software, or contact the software's manufacturer. You'll need to configure the software to allow these domains to send and receive data from the Internet freely:
    itunes.apple.com
    ax.itunes.apple.com
For assistance in configuring your firewall or accelerator software, you may need to contact the manufacturer or your Internet service provider (ISP). When contacting their support representatives, it may be useful to have the following information:
"Well Known" TCP and UDP Ports Used By Apple Software Products
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1629
The following article helps Windows users pinpoint software conflicts that could cause the error:
Using MSCONFIG to troubleshoot conflicts in Windows XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1275
Using MSCONFIG to troubleshoot conflicts in Windows Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2292
Once you have managed to allow access to iTunes through other software, please follow these instructions:
    1) Sign out of the iTunes Store.
    2) Quit the iTunes application.
    3) Restart your computer.
    4) Open iTunes.
    5) Select Check for Available Downloads from the Store menu at the top of iTunes, (if you're unable to upgrade and are using iTunes 7, you'll choose Check for Purchases).
If you can't find this option, you can also click this link to do the same thing:
    https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/checkForPurchases
    6) Enter your account name and password, then click Check. The missing item should begin downloading and appear in your Purchased playlist.
Please note that the iTunes Store cannot investigate every user's connection issue. Apple Discussions are another source of information about iTunes, where everyone from new users to professionals can interact and share their knowledge and experiences. You may find another user with the same operating system or ISP that may be able to help resolve this issue. You can find the iTunes discussions group at:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/itunes
If you are using a dial-up connection, you might consider downloading your purchases over a broadband connection, if you have access to one.
I hope this information is helpful. Thank you for shopping at the iTunes Store.

  • I was propmted to download a software update and now my ipad has frozen

I set the ipad to download the software update as prompted. I was prompted to connect the ipad to the mains electricity before running the update. I inadvertently (stupidly) forgot to switch on at the wall socket and left the download to run overnight. When I looked at the ipad the following morning the screen displayed the itunes symbol in the centre and what looks like a usb cable leading from this symbol to the home button. I realised I hadn't switched on the mains socket and did so then left the ipad for 24 hours to charge.
Now when I switch on I get the apple symbol and then the same itune and usb cable image and then the machine switches itself off again immediately.
    Help please!!

  • Is it possible to download only Software Updates for multiple Macs.

We currently have two 24inch iMacs, a 15 inch and a 17 inch MacBook Pro and a MacBook and only have limited download speeds in our regional area and only 1 Gb of data download allowance a month. Is there any way we can "download only" software updates on one computer and transfer the update to the other systems in Snow Leopard, like we did in Leopard. This does not appear to be possible in Snow Leopard. For us to upgrade all computers to 10.6.5, we would blow our data allowance for 2.5 months. And this does not take into account all the other updates that are available for installed Apple software. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

well, one way of doing that is to get the stand alone installer packages from [here|http://support.apple.com/downloads>, then either mount the .dmg's from the other Mac(s) or copy the .dmg's over the network.
i actually prefer this over software download - i usually install new software while booted into _*safe mode*_.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Problems trying to download iPod Software Update 2.0

Ive been trying to download the software update for about 3 hours now, but about every 5 minutes or less i get a error saying:
'There was a problem with the iPod software for the iPod "MyName iPod". The network connection timed out.
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.'
But, i'm having no problems whatsoever with my connection, it all seems perfectly fine to me.
If anyone could help me at all with any settings that might be able to be changed or something or anything that could stop this message appearing so that my download will actually be able to get somewhere...
    Thanks x

I am having this same issue trying to download the 1.1.5 update for my touch, it goes for a while then times out, over and over.
Over the last 18 hours I have tried this update about 30 times and it has failed every time, never at the same point, it downloads a different amount every time but it always stops...
No information from Apple on this issue ? Poor show, I would have expected better from the worlds best computer manufacturer, they give the impression that they think of everything but then it´s little things like this that let them down.

    Hi,
Thank you for your reply, I did go to my general settings, but for some odd reason I don't have a restrictions setting, or a reset setting. I thought I could reset all the setting to see if it could be that, but as I said there aren't any.
My husband also has the iPad 2, and also did the software update and hasn't had any problems at all. I took both iPad's and compared the settings thinking maybe there could be a setting that could have been changed when the update was done.
