Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

  • Transfer photos and music to a new macbook pro using time machine

Help!  I backed up my old macbook pro to an external drive using time machine.  I want to transfer all of the photos and music to my new macbook pro, but it says I don't have permission.  I can't get permission from the old mac because it won't turn on!  I brought it to the genius bar and they couldn't turn it on either.  They suggested I take it to Staples to get the files off.

    Julie,
Probably because you used a different account name than you had on the old one. Create a new account with the same name you had when you created the backup and run Migration Assistant. Migration Assistant is in Applications / Utitlities and you create the user by clicking the Apple icon, then System Preferences, Users & Groups.

  • HT201250 I use Snow Leopard and tried restore my Macbook pro using Time Machine.

After waiting a considerable time for Time Machine to restore my whole system, applications and files I had problems in that my Macbook Pro would not restart. The Apple logo appeared but then the screen scrolled down and a lot of letters, numbers and symbols appeared - not making any sense, and a box appeared telling me to restart holding down the on button. This I did. However it kept on repeating. In the end I had to reinstall the whole lot. Fortunately I had backed up all my files. I cannot use some of the programs I have because I cannot retrieve them. I do not have a disk with them on to reload because I downloaded them from the net and they are old progs and still did what I wanted. A lot of files I have saved do not open now without the old system and apps. Can anyone come up with an idea?

Ah that's good to hear, does this still work if TimeMachine updates to reflect the 10.7 drive?
There is no special update.  After installing Lion, Time Machine will do a normal "incremental" backup, of the stuff that's new or changed.  That will be relatively large and lengthy, of course, since OSX and the default Apple apps will all be backed-up.
But there's nothing else different about the TM drive. It stil contains all the past backups, including older versions of OSX.
In other words if a user upgrades to 10.7 and doesn't like it after a few days/weeks, has TM connected and it updated to relfect 10.7, can the user c boot off the 10.6 disk erase and restore 10.6 from the TM drive?
Yes, except you don't have to erase.
You just boot from the Snow Leopard Install disc and do a full system restore.  That includes erasing the destination, so it doesn't matter what's on it.  Then everything on the backup is restored, including OSX, apps, users, data, settings, etc., just as it was at the time of the backup selected.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14, especially step (g).  The sample is a bit fuzzy -- it's a photo, since you can't screenprint there, but note that the last two backups were made on Snow Leopard:
Once that's done, and the system restarts, you can use the "Star Wars" display to restore selected items from later (ie, Lion) backups, but of course in some cases (Mail for one), the Snow Leopard apps won't work with the Lion-formatted files.

  • Help Help..Can not back up my Macbook Pro with Time Machine

I have Mac Book Pro Mac OS X version 10.6.8 and Time capsule 802.11n (3rd generation), I used to do back up wirelessly but then it stopped. so i connected it directly to laptop, it did not work. so i did reset on Time Capsule/Machine and didnt work. Show error 1) Time Machine could not comple Back Up (The back disk image "/volume/data/macintosh.sparsebundle"could not be created (error 1) and then different time i tried got different error 2) Time Machine Could Not Complete (the back disk image "/volume/data/macintosh.sparsebundle"couldnot be created (error 60)..please advise

The TC drive is network and will never show up in disk utility.
You can mount the sparse bundle into the utility and do a check on it.. but that serves little purpose.
I used to do back up wirelessly but then it stopped. so i connected it directly to laptop,
It is highly likely the setup is wrong.
Please do a full factory reset of the TC.
The Factory Reset TC Gen1-4. Or AE Gen1-5
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec.
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Redo the setup using the airport utility. For older OS and TC you can do this by ethernet with wireless turned off if you like.
Tell us the main modem router and how the TC was originally setup.. if it was in bridge mode.. then put the TC back in bridge and plug it into the router.
If there are issues they will show up in the airport utility. Please list any issues it has.

  • HT3275 How do I back up my MacBook Pro to Time machine (capsule)?

I have time capsule installed as the wireless server and it is backing up the iMac desktop.  I was told I could back up all the computers,  When I select disk on the macbook, it doesn't list the time machine drive.  Do I need to connect the laptop directly in order to back it up?

If the MBP is already connecting to the network via the TC it is just being difficult. (It is incredibly difficult at the moment as apple have some built in bugs in Lion and ML).
Use finder and go, go to server. Type in the actual TC name. Thusly..
    AFP://TCname
If the MBP still cannot find the TC.. reboot it.. it should then work.. it is like olden day electronics .. sometimes you need to give it a swift kick to get it going.
(Please do not actually physically kick anything.. I was being metaphorical!!)

  • If I have backed-up my Macbook while using Time Machine with Mavericks, can I erase my drive, install Snow Leopard, then re-load my Mavericks backup from Time Machine?

Hi there. This is my first time using this community, so thanks for reading. It pretty much says it all up there on the top. I backed up my computer with Time Machine while using Mavericks OS. For the sake of optimizing my computer and giving it a fresh start, I want to erase my drive and re-boot it with Snow Leopard, which I have a disc for. Once all that is done and I have a "brand-new" computer, will I be able to reload my Time Machine back-up?? Thanks!!

  • How do i restore my MacBook Pro using Time Machine?

I have a Hard Drive with a Time Machine backup on but i have also other files such as videos, photos, programs etc. I'm just wondering if the other files get deleted if I restore my MacBook Pro? Thx

Using the Time Machine backup to restore to your Mac will not delete other files you have on the Time Machine backup disk.
However, in general, it is not a good idea to store live files on a Time Machine backup disk.  The Time Machine disk can fail just like any other disk.  If it does it is no big deal for Time Machine.  You purchase another drive and start another backup.  However if that drive fails, the other files on it will be lost.  So if you offload files onto an extenral drive, they should be on a non-backup drive.  Then go into the Time Machine preferences and make sure that offload drive is not excluded from the list of volumes it will backup.

  • My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk).  Can I do this?

My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk) for a few weeks.  This same disk was used to back-up the Pro earlier, and to migrate from the Pro to the Air.  Can I do this "back-migration" from the Air to the Pro?  Is it maybe better just to migrate the specific folders (Outlook email, Office docs) I am sure I need?

Do not attempt to copy files/folders from a Time Machine backup. Only use the Time Machine application to restore from the backup.
Click on a Finder window and select Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "restore" and select "restore items backed up with time machine" from the hints list. You will find these two articles:
Recover items using Time Machine and Spotlight
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can use Time Machine with Spotlight to recover lost or deleted items.
Note: You can retrieve earlier versions of TextEdit documents from within TextEdit. For more information, see:
View and restore past versions of documents
Open a Finder window and type a search word or phrase in the search field in the upper-right corner.
Select a location to search in the location bar.
Refine the results by specifying search criteria. Narrow down Spotlight search results
Open the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, then choose Enter Time Machine.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the Time Machine backups. Your search is performed in every window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore.
The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it’s returned to the Documents folder.
Restore items backed up with Time Machine
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can easily bring back lost items or recover older versions of files.
You can use Time Machine within many apps. If the iCloud Documents & Data feature is turned on, you can recover older versions of iCloud documents as well as regular documents.
Open a window for the item you want to restore. For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. To recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail. To recover an iCloud document, open the document’s app, choose File > Open, then click iCloud to view the iCloud documents for that app.If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
From the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, choose Enter Time Machine. A message may appear while your Mac connects to the backup disk.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the snapshots and backups.White tick marks represent snapshots stored on your internal drive (portable computers only). Pink tick marks represent backups stored on your backup disk. If a tick mark appears dimmed or grayed, there’s no backup available or the backup disk is not connected.
For more information about an item, double-click it.The windows in Time Machine behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore. You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk. The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder.

Hi, I had been having the same problem for over a week, but both my window's HP and my 2011 macbook pro barely could load youtube.  What kind of router you have?  I was using a belkin play router that was only 8 months old, switched to a new AirPort Extreme Base Station and now everything works perfect.

Stock standard issue.. asked 5-10 times per day here.. look at "more like this" on the right.
Simply reboot the TC ie pull out the power. .count to 10.. plug the power back in.
Maybe need to restart the network.. in order modem.. router .. TC.. clients. 2min gap.
