I Book G3 Won't Boot

Hi
I recently took a broken I Book G3 of a friends hands. Originaly I could access Darwin but after that it woul just shut down. I left the laptop booted in Darwin and (This may sound unbelievable) when i came back into the room the cat was standing on the keyboard. Now i can only boot into open firmware. The hardrive has been but in an enclousure and when connected to a G3 desktop it comes up with a volume error message. The hardrive when put back in the IBook now won't spin up. The DVD drive in the laptop is also shot.
Now the I BOOK only boots to a grey screen and i can only access open firmware. I have also swapped out the logic board with one i got on ebay (Yes could be dodgy) and still doesn't Work.
Please Advise
Regards JSW

Have you tried connecting the hard drive to the G3 desktop and reformatting it? If the drive reformats OK, you could install an OS to it using the G3 desktop.

  • Mac book air won't boot

We have a macbook air and it won't boot, just goes into the loop and stays there forever.  Clues?

Using your System Restoration disk, boot to it by first making it avaialble (DVD or Flash Drive), then boot with the OPTION key held down. You then select that disk, when a list of bootable drives is presented.
Use the Disk Utility on that disk to Verify & Repair the main boot drive, and while you are at it, repair the permissions on that drive.
Try rebooting. If it fails, then boot again to the System Recovery disk and reinstall the operating system. Doing so, right on top of the old installation should repair any dmaged files preventing proper boot. Hence, it is called a "Repair Installation".

It sounds like you are experiencing an issue where you computer will not power up. Here is an article with some tips on addressing this issue:

  • Start-up disc is full and mac book pro won't boot

I got the your startup disc is full pop-up a few hours ago, but didn't do anything about it. I powered down my machine, but now when I try to power it on again, it won't boot, I simply get the spinning gear and apple logo. I opened disc utility and performed a disc check and it said the disc was ok, however there is only 700 kb of free space. I want to free up some space to allow the computer to boot, but don't  know how. Is there a way to do this? I don't have another mac available to me, not sure how to fix this issue.

You're Welcome. Glad you got it sorted and Thanks for posting back.

  • Mac book pro won't boot

OMG please help! I am an expat in China and my Mac is my lifeline.
My daughter was watching an Itunes show and it froze (got the bouncing beach ball). I tried to force quit and it didn't work so I turned it off.
Now when I turn it on I get the grey screen with the apple and the bar at the bottom. It loads a little bit, goes back to the grey screen with the bar, and then goes to a black screen.
I tried resetting the SMC but to no avail.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I really can't afford a trip to Beijing right now. Thank you!

Hi c, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try running Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insert disc>restart>immediately hold down c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”)>at first screen select the language and click Continue> click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar>open Disk Utility>select your HD in the panel on the left side>click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself).

  • Mac book pro won't boot up.

I recently updated to my lion, after the update I had to reset the PRAM b/c my computer was stuck muted.  Everything was fine. Shut my screen last night (which is set to put my computer to sleep) opened it this morning and nothing happened. No lights no sounds nothing, pressed the power button and I could hear the cd drive start to spin, hard drive, and fans start to boot up, the light on the front came on like it would normally, than it all stopped before anything came up on the screen. Pressed power button again, holding it down this time same thing happens but this time my light on the front blinks a bunch than everything stops. I've disconnected the power, disconnected and reconnected the battery, (battery has full bars for power), mag safe is lit up green. I honestly have no clue what the next step would be, since I can't even get it to start booting up. Any ideas and help Would be appreciated... Otherwise it's to the Mac store for me.
    Thanks

Well it doesn't seem to work. When I select hard drive it has the same response as when I turn it on. The apple sign appears and the dial spins nonstop. If I select the install disk, it just shuts down the computer and reboots again with the same outcome as above. I plugged in my hard drive back up and it wasn't even seen. Will prosoft work if I can't even get past this point?
I doubt there's any need for data recovery software, as this does not sound like a HD issue.
Although I doubt it will work, I would try FireWire Target Disk Mode; if it does work, save/transfer your data to the other Mac.
For recovering your data, another option is to remove the HD, install it in an external enclosure, and connect that to another Mac.
As far as hardware troubleshooting, it sounds like the logic board may be bad, but before assuming that, I would troubleshoot the RAM. Remove one module, try booting like that, move the installed module to the other slot, try booting again, and repeat with the module you first removed.

  • Mac Book suddenly won't boot up and nothing helps.

Wife's MacBook has a white screen when turned on then it gets the flashing file icon with the question mark.
I have tried booting up in Safe Mode, from the install disk and by using my MB as another hard drive connected by FireWire.
Same every time just the white screen then the file icon.
I have had my own MB do this twice but using the install disk worked then so I know that I'm doing the right thing.
My wife's appeared to have the problem after our youngest stuffed a Windows CDrom into the Super Drive.
    Any ideas folks. Cheers.

    Hi,
The folder with flasing question mark at power-up is an indication that a bootable medium can not be found. Just becaause the hard drive is not bootable may not mean that it is unreadable.
You might want to try resetting the parameter RAM and system power controller. You can find links to information on how to do that on the MacBook support main web page.
The next thing to try is to boot from the OS X installer DVD. After the installer boots, don't continue on to the actual install, but click to Disk Utility. Highligh your hard drive, and check the S.M.A.R.T. status. If SMART does not show as, "verified," there is a good chance the drive has a serious mechanical problem. If there is irreplacable data, consider stopping and sending the drive to a data recovery service. Seagate has a data recovery division that will evaluate the drive for free to tell you if if they think tyhey can recover anything. Recovery is not free, but is a lot less expensive than recreating the drive's content.
If the drive SMART status is verified, you can try removing the drive and installing the drive in an external enclosure attached to a different Mac. Check this link for recovery software suggestions: http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=693649&seqNum=3 Several posts on this forum have been complimentary of Tech Tools.

  • Spinning wheel spins but Mac Book Pro won't boot - got stuck there!

I have been using my MacBook Pro since last summer ans installed Snow Leopard a coiuple of months ago or so. No problem whatsoever. However, an hour ago, the computer crashed whan I was viewing a web site. I waited and waited. I then tried to Force Quit, but nothing happened. So at lats I was obliged to shut down using the power button (holding it till shut down)
When I tried to reboot, the grey screen with the apple appeared as well as the spinning wheel. The latter kept on spinning and spinning but to no avail. I tried safe booting, same result. I booted holding cmd option P R, nothing. I tried single user, and no result.

Yes, and first try to repair disk and check the SMART status of your disk. Assuming the SMART status is verified and the disk repair does not work, then I would do a repair install of Sno by installing Sno over Sno as in an upgrade install. Such an install, while usually very safe, still is an install so be appropriated backed up if you proceed. You will need to reinstall 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 after the repair install. I would do so using the [10.6.2 combo updater|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959].

  • Spinning wheel spins but Mac Book Pro won't boot - got stuck there!- II

    Right.
Last week I had this problem and I posted it in the forum:
+"I have been using my MacBook Pro since last summer ans installed Snow Leopard a coiuple of months ago or so. No problem whatsoever. +Shall I boot from the Snow Leaopard DVD installation disk?"+
The problem was solved by booting from the Snow Leopard Installation DVD. Then I updated the system with the "10.6.2 combo updater", and it worked fine for a couple of days.
*But an hour ago I tried to start my MacBook Pro and the spinning wheel issue started again. Only this time I can't jump start it with the Installation DVD of Snow Leopard. It seems to read the disk but doesn't actually boot. Remains on a blank screen the follows the spinning wheel one and simply remains inert there...*
    Very frustrating. Any hints?

It's quite possible. Many people who upgrade then have problems usually had problems before the upgrade. The upgrade merely made them worse. For future reference:
    System Upgrade and Installation Procedure
    Basic Caveats
    1. Disconnect all peripherals except the original mouse and keyboard.
    2. Quit all applications if this is not an installation from an Installer DVD.
    3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation you may have to erase the hard drive and reinstall from scratch.
    4. Once the installation begins do not use the computer in any way except to reply to dialog prompts or to restart when the installation is completed. This is especially critical during the installation stage known as "Optimizing the System."
    System Update Procedure
    A. Repair hard drive and permissions.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.2 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. Note that Disk Warrior will not work on Intel Macs.
    B. Clone your existing system to an external Firewire drive.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the startup or source volume to the Source entry field.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    C. Decide upon an installation option.
You have three upgrade options. If you use the Upgrade installation option be sure you have repaired the hard drive and permissions first and made your backup. If you choose the Archive and Install option then you only need to repair the hard drive.
Neither of the above options will erase the disk. Some of your software may not work with a new system. You will need to upgrade those programs. It would be best to do the upgrades to your software before upgrading to the new system version.

  • My Mac book pro won't boot and eject the cd.

I loaded a cd and did not get the icon on the desktop. I ejected it, which ok a longer period of time than usual. I then loaded a second cd and did not get the desktop icon. Many attempts to eject this second disk were unsuccessful so I powered down, the powered up Nile holding the 1) eject button down, 2) holding the F12 button down and 3) holding the mouse button down. All I get is the chime, a blank, dim screen and a momentary flash of the LED on the 'open lid' button.

First thing I would try is booting while holding down the Option key. If the drive is ok, you should see the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk and restart.
Unfortunately, 90% of the time, the ? on boot means the drive is failing or has failed
