I can no longer download apps on my iPad. Can I download ios 5?

I'm not even sure what operating system I have but I can no longer update apps bc the ios requirement is too high....what can I do?

If you are curious and you want to know what iOS you are running - go to Settings>General>About>Version.
Also make sure that you transfer purchases into iTunes from your iPad via File>Transfer Purchases while the iPad is connected to your computer, with iTunes running and with your iPad selected. Also make sure that you backup your iPad  by right clicking on the iPad name under devices and selecting - Backup. Copy any important files to your computer as well before you update your iPad.
