I can't get my iPod Classic (3rd gen) to reset. Device won't connect to iPod server.

I have an iPod 3rd gen classic with the 160 GB HDD. All attempts at resetting the device elicit a dialog that states that iTunes can't read the contents of the iPod and that I should go to the summary tab in iPod preferences to click restore to factory settings. When I hit OK the iPod appears in the devices list in iTunes and the title box appears identifying the iPod by serial number, but notes the capacity of the device as 0 KB. My only option is to press the restore iPod button. As soon as the button is pressed I get a dialog which states that iTunes cannot access the iPod software server because I am not connected to the internet. This behavior has been consistent in 2 versions of iTunes (I just got 11.1.5.5) and 2 versions of iPod software (now 2.0.4 up from 2.0.2).
I got into the iPod diagnostics (center + previous, FYI) and tested the drive which appears to be fine. I'm going fairly nuts with this 'cause I gots to have my tunes and have been diligent about troubleshooting only to hit this wall. Any suggestions?

Hi Dave,
Have you checked to verify your iPod is a Classic 3rd gen? Apple's website is kind of confusing when classifying the different generations of the Classic iPods. My thoughts on the differing classifications of iPod Classics are as such: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_iPod_models (scroll down to models) I have just finished replacing the battery in a friend's iPod Classic 3rd Generation and found that they only made a 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 GB hard drive for those that look as such: 2003-2009 with 4 buttons across the top (back track, menu, play/pause, and forward track) and beneath that is the touch wheel (pictured below is an example of how iPod Classic 3rd Gens look). If that is the case, someone may have upgraded the wrong size hard drive. The previous person may have instead installed a compact flash card. If I researched correctly, when upgrading to a compact flash card the iPod can be very touchy with which manufacturer of the compact flash card will work properly. IPod Dock Won't Charge iPod Classic 3rd Gen

Hi,
I have an iPod Classic 3rd generation that is running Version 2.3 with the Capacity of 13.9 GB.

The problem: this iPod Classic will not charge on ANY iPod Dock. No matter what brand or type, as long as it is the standard iPod Dock, it will not charge at all. It also has trouble playing songs and stops midway.
I have an iPod Touch 4th Gen and it works fine on the same dock.
Is there anything I can try to fix this problem for my iPod Classic? I tried connecting it to iTunes, restored it and updated it to the latest firmware.
Please try and solve this problem.

Playing songs doesn't work either. The first song will play for 30 so seconds then will stop and the iPod will freeze until I unplug it.
Is there any way to work around this problem. Maybe some type of an adapter that the iPod sits on, and the adapter then sits on the dock so that it can transmit everything properly. I do not believe that the only solution is just to buy an older dock.

Is the ipod nano 2nd generation compatible to work with the old dock for the 3rd generation of ipod classic?

Well it's compatible in the sense that it will work with the iPod as the dock connector is the same.
However, it's way too large and the nano will be nowhere near a snug fit so you risk damage to the delicate connector pins if you are not extremely careful.

By default the iOS Notification Center cannot display such things.
What he has done is known as jailbreaking and will void your warranty as well as remove the security Apple builds in to its devices.

IPod Nano 3rd Gen. Problems [Rebooting, Won't Sync Contact/Calendar Data]

I have noticed that my iPod nano will reboot itself after it has been syncing/charging. It reboots when I go to the last playlist that was playing before I began to sync/charge it. Also, it would randomly reboots when I am selection a playlist.
Then, it won't sync my contact/calendar data if it nearly full. But I can sync them when it is nearly empty.
What is causing the problem and how can I fix it?

if you have done restores then possibly it is a firmware issue... i would take it to the apple store if you can to get it looked at...

Audiobooks on iPod Classic, 3rd Gen

I just downloaded an 8-volume audiobook from my county library. The only way I can locate the book after download is through iTunes - Recently Added. I can't find it by sorting Album or Artist. When I eject the iPod, I there is no Audiobooks selection. How can I locate this book to replay it?

Ok, I guess I just got smarter because I just figured it out. I had to go to the Settings, Main Menu and make sure that Audiobooks was checked. It was previously unchecked and that's why it didn't show up on my Main Menu.

Ipod classic 7 gen, windows 7 32bit won't install usb driver. in device manager, exclaimation mark under other devices, it says no driver loaded.

I have uninstalled any programs that looked starge or might be causing conflict.
uninstalled everythign to do with itunes or apple, rebnooting and diong a fresh install.
my older ipod works fine.
updated intel usb chipset drivers.
i have tried any instructinos i can find online.
I tried updating the "ipod" driver in device manager, I point it to c:\windows\system32
it gives me a starge message saying it can't install the mass storage device, somethign is wrong . . . .

I too am having the same problem. Whats the point of having a server status stating everything is working when clearly it isnt. I'm just in the process of changing all my important mail stuff over to gmail - I just cant be without mail for hours whilst there is no status update.
I would understand if this were a free service - however its not.
Does anyone have an ETA on a fix ?

IPod Nano 3rd Gen won't play AIFF files from Logic Pro 9

Hi, so I've bounced a few tracks I was working on in Logic pro 9 as AIFF files, imported them into iTunes and then synced them down to both an iPod Touch 2nd gen and this iPod Nano 3rd Gen. The tracks play fine on the iPod Touch, but on the Nano, when I try to play a track, it shoes the "player" screen for a second, but it always bounces back to the track listing.
According to the iPod Nano 3rd gen spec sheet, it does support AIFF files:

Any idea as to why this is happening?
Also, I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.4, iTunes 9.2 and I reset the iPod nano just before starting this whole project.
I'd like to keep the tracks in AIFF if possible...

Backing up an iOS device will copy some data to a backup file within iTunes, but this excludes all media. You can also transfer iTunes Store purchases from the iDevice to iTunes but, without using a third-party tool, nothing else. As long as you do not sync the iPod with your new library, the media that's on it will remain ... for as long as it keeps functioning, is not lost, stolen, eaten by the dog, ...
You may also have an option to recover your previous library from your old laptop; as long as its hard drive isn't fried, a computer repair store or technician may be able to extract the drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and copy your data to another PC. Whatever you choose, there is no real alternative to having all your media on your computer, managed by iTunes, and regularly backed up to another device/location.
