I can't get video with Skype. Any solutions?

I have a new MBP and when calling with skype, the people on the other end do not get a video picture. I have gone through the prefernces process to select the camera and have it start when I make a call but to no avail. Any suggestions? Face time is not an option since the others do not have mac. Thanks.

Ended up resetting the prefences in Skype then closing Skype and reopening it and all is well. Thanks.

• Got a new wireless keyboard that is not paired - can't get past login screen// any solutions?

The keyboard that arrived paired with my iMac was having connection issues so I swapped it this past weekend for a new one.
When I turned on my computer, I realized that I couldn't type anything because the new keyboard is not paired with my iMac.
Because of this, I can't get past my login screen! Any solutions? Thanks!

Use a USB keyboard until you can get new keyboard connected. It can be any old USB keyboard, one from a PC is fine. If you can borrow one that would be fine.

• Can't get video with Adobe Flash Player (windows7 64-bit)

Get audio but not video on current version of Adobe Flash Player. Have Windows7 (64bit). Ran every test suggested on website and still no luck.

Can you post your dxdiag report so we can take a look at your system? You might also want to try disabling hardware acceleration.
How do I disable or enable hardware acceleration?

-->Click HERE<-- Does item "B" (Turn video on/off) in the last topic on the page help?
You control the camera for Skype from within Skype, so Skype must be running to running to make video work.

• HT1454 Can not get video out from my ipod touch 3rd gen. Any ideas? It should nt be diffiicult to do this on the 21 st century, or not?

After having spent EUR 130 on cables from apple, i still can not get video out from my ipod touch 3rd gen. Any ideas? It should nt be diffiicult to do this on the 21 st century, or not?

Backing up an iOS device will copy some data to a backup file within iTunes, but this excludes all media. You can also transfer iTunes Store purchases from the iDevice to iTunes but, without using a third-party tool, nothing else. As long as you do not sync the iPod with your new library, the media that's on it will remain ... for as long as it keeps functioning, is not lost, stolen, eaten by the dog, ...
You may also have an option to recover your previous library from your old laptop; as long as its hard drive isn't fried, a computer repair store or technician may be able to extract the drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and copy your data to another PC. Whatever you choose, there is no real alternative to having all your media on your computer, managed by iTunes, and regularly backed up to another device/location.

• What kind of video intro can I get away with?

I would like to have a video of about the size and quality of this apple Final Cut Studio NAB video.
http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/action/?movie=nab
Only not nearly as long. Well under a minute for sure! Can I get away with this in iweb with autoload setup for the initial splash screen of my website. I'll be using a .mac account.
Is there a way to make it have some type of loading indicator and a skip past intro thing? Will it take 3 days to load? Advise? Thanks!

Hello John,
The biggest factor on whether people will watch your movie intro is dependent on their connection speed. If all your viewers have cable/dsl then it probably isn't a problem, if you are getting lots of low speed visitors then they won't take the time to let it load—probably.
If you don't already have Statcounter ( http://www.statcounter.com/ ) and or Goggle Analytics ( http://www.google.com/analytics/ ) you should get both. This will allow you to monitor your visitor demographic, giving you the ability to design your site to the needs of the majority.... plus it is fun to see hits come in from across the country and around the world.
Any how, I degress. Even if all your users have fast connection speeds you will probably have better luck with a flash movie which yields a higher quality to lower size ratio then the Quicktime format. Plus, more people have flash installed on their computers then Quicktime. If you don't have a flash converter you can get a resonably priced conveter at http://www.verticalmoon.com/products/video2swf/video2swf.htm
The only problem with using flash (I currently still use Quicktime) is that you will have to add your movies in post publish. Hope that helps.

• I HAVE AN IPAD 2 WITH WIFI ONLY, CAN I GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM ANY SMARTPHONE, OR DO I NEED A SPECIFIC PHONE FOR THIS?

i ave an ipad 2 with wifi only, can i get internet access from any cell phone, or do i need a specific phone or type of phone

I received an iPad 2 for Christmas (the 1st Apple item I've ever owned!) and own a Nokia N95 8GB mobile (that's pretty much on its last legs/ready to die any day).
On the Nokia I've got 2 apps (downloaded from/via Nokia's 'Ovi' app store): JoikuSpot & HandyWi. Both are the free versions.
I've not used HandyWi much - if at all - but JoikuSpot has been great. Basically, it creates a wifi hotspot (as pjl123 mentioned) in a couple of straightforward steps, and allows a few devices to be connected. It displays who/what is connected at a given time - so you can check if the guy having coffee behind you is piggybacking your hotspot or not! - data packets sent received etc.
The paid version has the benefit of allowing you to secure the hotspot and other security features. Their website is www.joiku.com, FYI.
Given how slow behind the 8 ball Nokia has been, their phones are getting cheaper and cheaper - given Joiku's meant to work with Nokia S60, Symbian ^3, Maemo, Meego & Sony Ericsson S60, this might be a cost effective option.
Ps. Ah! One more thing - Joiku's website specifies that 3G must be used; that WAP will not work. Good luck, enjoy!

• Can't get video chat to work outside of LAN...

Hello,
I can't get video chat to work.
All computers, LAN and WAN are running the latest iChat under 10.4 (including latest updates).
Within our LAN, via Bonjour, everything is fine.
I'm now trying to set up an offsite Intel iMac (10.4) and I can't connect via video chat with them.
I've had this problem in the past and eventually gave up (so much for "it just works" - I've spent the last 10+ years dealing with Macs and Mac-based networking, I can't imagine "my dad" figuring this all out). Trying again with fingers crossed...?
If someone could help, it'd be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Kristin.
The studio router/firewall is a SonicWall TZ 170 Standard.
This router has a static IP.
All suggested ports on the SonicWall are set up correctly to allow in/out from our LAN.
All computers on the LAN have static IP addresses.
Quicktime streaming settings set as suggested.
OS X Firewall on all computers = OFF.
No iChat add-ons on any computers.
Internet connection speed = 7404 kb/s
The offside router/firewall is a LinkSys WRT54G
This router does not have a static IP.
DMZ is ON and set to the only computer connected to it.
Computer has a static IP address.
Quicktime streaming settings set as suggested.
OS X Firewall on all computers = OFF.
No iChat add-ons on computer.
Internet connection speed = 5116 kb/s
If any more information is required to help you help me, just let me know!

Does the TZ170 have UPnP or Port Triggering then ?
I can not see that it does here
Opening the ports in the manner listed on that link will only allow one computer (IP) to use the open ports.
The Linksys is router and you have not mentioned what the modem is doing at that end.
Why not use UPnP here ? The Linksys does it (on the Administration page)
Most likely this needs the Respond to Anonymous Pings checked on the Security page.

• STILL can't get Videos into 5G iPod I give up I'm bringing it back

I have the Black 30GB, after a week of trying iSquint , Handbrake ,Movies for my iPod and now MPEG Streamclip I still can't get videos in my iPod . I give up, it's scratched to bits and I handle it with extreme care . This was the worst $300.00 I've ever spent .

I had trouble with that too, but figured it out. Here are some things to check:
1.) Preferences in iTunes with the iPod connected. I put mine on automatic update of all podcasts, just to make sure nothing is missed.
2.) On the iPod, go to Settings > Main Menu > Videos > On
3.) On the iPod, got to Videos > Video Settings > TV Out OFF, Widescreen OFF, TV Signal (in US is NTSC, in Europe is PAL).
After I configured #3, all worked. I'm not sure the widescreen setting makes a difference, but I do know the TV settings do.
I think you won't have any problems if you go down this checklist. Too bad they don't mention it in Apple support.

• Can't get Videos to run on the Internet

Can't get Videos to run on the Internet. Clicked to watch a video and nothing happened. Sales person in Apple store said to get "Flip4Mac", free edition, which is what they used in store as the files on this site and in Windows Media. I downloaded it and I think I installed it. At least it said is was installed and updated. But when I went to my Son's favorite website, Nascar.com, when he clicked on a video to watch nothing happened. Anyone have any idea what's wrong?
Thanks in advance for the help.....Nancy

First off, I'll list all the items that I use to play, just about, all media on the web:
Flip4Mac
(as you might have found out, Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported)
VLC
Real Player
Perian
Adobe Flash
Streamclip
All that being said, there is still some unplayable A/V content on the web. Even though it's listed as WMV, they are really processed with a codec that is underneath that wrapper, and unsupported by any of the above listed apps and plug ins. If any content like this is found on a high profile site, and is in wmv format, then the Flip4Mac people request to be told, so they can see if compatibility can be written in on their next update.
Generally, video playback on a Mac can be somewhat complex. Would be nice if everyone used Quicktime, but I don't see that happening on the PC end of things anytime soon. So, we'll all just have to use what we can to view content.
RE: learning Leopard....there are some tutorials on the Apple support site, but I've always found the suppot discussions to be pretty helpful. I've never been one to get a lot from manuals. Mostly, I get my knowledge from working with the apps I need, and getting advise from others who have done whatever. Occasionally, there's a class at the college that you might look into. Anyway, feel free to ask any questions you want on this forum, or drop me an email. [email protected]

• Prior to installing iOS 6 on my iPhone 4, I could stream video and audio via "Air Video" and "Stream to Me" from my PC, to my TV via a HDMI adapter. Now I can only get video and no audio.

I have been able to stream, via wi-fi, TV shows, movies and music from my laptop through a HDMI adapter via my iPhone 4, to my television. I use mainly "Air Video" but also use "Stream to Me", both with the same results. Since the update to iOS6 this is not possible. I can still get video but now no audio. Help me!

I too am having this very problem. I have an iPhone 4S that is less than one year old. Prior to updating my iOS firmware, I was able to record and transfer video to my PC and view it with a variety of programs without any modifications. Since updating the firmware, all videos that have been taken are not viewable on my PC. I can hear the audio associated with the video, but the video is blank. I can transfer the file off my phone using the Windows transfer tool. Then sync the video back to my phone and it works just fine. I tried emailing the video to myself, that did not work. I rebooted my computer, no luck. I reinstalled QuickTime, still isn't working. I can still watch the videos that were made with iOS 5.1.1 but nothing made with iOS 6.
I have been successful with the following procedure: Once the video is transfered from the phone to my PC, I change the extension from .MOV to .MPG and this makes the video viewable with Windows Media Player; however, if the video is shot in a portrait orientation, it displays sideways in WMP as a landscape orientation. I have been able to then run the video through Microsofts MovieMaker program to right the video 90 degrees but the image comes out a little squatty like it's out of scale. In either case, it serves the purpose and I can export it to another .MPG format that I can then run through Sony Vegas and edit as I see fit. While it works, this is a huge hassle and I shouldn't have to do it.
Does anyone know of anything that is working? Are there new codecs somewhere that windows users need to get a hold of?

• Can't get video from camera update / suggestions?

As I think others have reported, I have lost my ability to participate in iChat AV video sessions, and any attempt produces a "can't get video from camera" error message. I am running OS 10.4.5.
I have an extra internal hard drive with no OS on it, so I did a clean install of Mac OS 10.4 and iChat was back to working. I then applied all the Apple Software Updates to bring it up to 10.4.5 as well as any othe Security Updates and such, and it is still working OK as long as I boot off that OS.
This tells me the problem cannot be in my Router or DSM Modem, I think.
In the past, I have had ShowMacster and iGlasses installed on my original system, but I believe that I have uninstalled both of those properly. Still does not work.
I DO have Apple Remote Desktop - Admin installed on this startup volume, and I cannot say for sure whether the problem may have started around the time I installed it. It's possible, I just wasn't keeping chronological records of installs back then.
So, the GOOD news is that I can participate in any iChat AV session I want to be in as long as I have prior notice or enough time to reboot my G5 PowerMac under my second drive, but I still can't keep iChat AV open on my main drive and expect to be able to respond to impromptu invites to a video session.
I thought I may have read that Apple Remote Desktop can create a conflict. If anyone knows, I would be all ears! Thanks for any suggestions.

I believe I have solved the mystery of why I was getting the "can't get video from camera" error message. I had said earlier that I had Apple Remote Desktop (admin) loaded on my Mac but that I did not normally have this application open. What I failed to realize, though, was that for some reason I also had Apple Remote Desktop set to ON in my Sharing System Preferences pane. All I had to do was to uncheck this box and my ability to carry on video chats returned.
I expect that somehow in the process of installing and running the Apple Remote Desktop application to access another Macintosh on my home network, I must have either manually or automatically caused Apple Remote Desktop to be turned ON as if I was wanting to allow some other Admin user to connect to my Mac. Doesn't make much sense to me, but I am happy with the solution.

• Found an error related to "can't get video from Camera"

So, I am back with the same issue: it is now 3-4 months I can't Video chat because iChat AV tells me "can't get video from camera". I disable the firewall (for the test), I forwarded nearly ALL the TCP and UDP packets from my router to the mac, I stopped any application such as PostgreSQL or others which might interfeer. I checked I didn't have any strange firewall rules still on even when switched of from UserPreferences (sudo ipfw list)...
Well, I can see myself with the camera but it won't get the image of the party I am connecting to. So... I looked in the console and:
2006-03-04 19:09:14.926 iChat[9245] WARNING: Freeze-frame failed: couldn't get local buffer for layer Local!
Each time, this is the message.
I did the downgrade Quicktime test I also reinstalled the combined update... nothing worked.
It seems CRAZY that nobody at Apple can at least tell me WHERE to have a look. After all the message is not very clear. Where is the problem? My mac, my router, iChat?
I filed a bug BTW... because it DID work in the past and now stoped working, so my netgear router can't be in fault (I also checked the logs of the router and of the firewall... nothing seemed to be stoped)
Alex

Hi Alexander,
Defcom aslo has a Netgear And I will let him come back on that side.
On the error front iChat has about 4 standard messages.
1) User did not Respond.
2) Insufficient Bandwidth.
3) Can not get Video from Camera
4) Did not get data for 10 secs
Unfortunately the causes can overlap, hence the lack of Ahaa !!
The most common feature of all of them is something to do with the way the routing devices are set up.
This leads us to start with the LAN set up,
The ports that are open,
the method used to open them,
Whether DHCP is being used with Port Forwarding as the IP can change to your computer and the Port Forwarding point to the "wrong" IP
How many devices are in the link to the Internet ?
IF you are doing NAT (Port Forwarding or Port Triggering) ?
Whether your ISP has started dong NAT to your service
Whether they offer a SIP based Service like VoIP phones.
