I can't send emails via mail. I can receive but not send. I have set up gmail on mail. Any ideas? No problems with the set up previously to this.

Go to Mail Preferences- Accounts and confirm you are providing Gmail what they require to send and receive mail. And DON'T specify Secure Socket Layer. Some mail accts don't like SSL
Good Luck to you.

Trying to set up mail....  will receive but not send.  Already called internet provider.  They said ask Apple.

    Hi ...
Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2), Lion.
From the Lion Help viewer ...
    If you can’t send messages
If the Send button is dimmed or you see an alert that your message can’t be sent using the outgoing mail server, you might not be able to send messages. Here are some things you can try:
Make sure the outgoing mail server is specified correctly, as directed by your email service provider.Verify your outgoing mail server
If you try to send a message and a dialog appears saying you need permission, an administrator has limited the email addresses you can correspond with. Click the Ask Permission button.Request permission to send messages
Choose Window > Connection Doctor, and follow any instructions displayed in the Details column. Check whether there is a problem with your outgoing mail server or a firewall, if applicable, or if there was a login failure. If the Connection Doctor indicates a firewall problem:Verify there is no firewall software blocking email traffic on port 25, 465, or 587.Check whether you’re affected by another firewall. This could be either software installed separately from Mac OS X or built into an Internet sharing router, or software administered by your Internet service provider. Contact the appropriate person to find out whether a firewall exists.
You may be able to send messages from only a certain location. For example, if you send messages from school, you may not be allowed to send messages using the school’s outgoing mail server when you’re at home. Or, the email service provider may allow you to send messages but with stricter settings (such as requiring a name and password). Get the information you need from your provider and then change the outgoing mail server settings in Mail preferences.

  • Mac mail 7.3 receiving but not sending

    Hello everyone,
I have been stuggling with this problem for three days now.  I set up a new e-mail account (for a new job) and the new account will receive fine but not send.  Here is the general set of steps that I followed:
    *  Used IMAP unsecured - smtp port 25.  Failed due to port blocking
    *  Used IMAP unsecured - smtp port 587.  Works on other servers but this one not.
    *  Used IMAP and smtp secured with SSL - smtp port 465.  Failed.
The last one is what I believe I should be using.  I get the standard "Could not connect to this SMTP server..." message on connection doctor, and all I get from the log is:
    INITIATING CONNECTION Jun 10 11:04:13.633 host:vps2955.inmotionhosting.com -- port:465 -- socket:0x0 -- thread:0x608002468c00
    CONNECTED Jun 10 11:04:14.278 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNone] -- host:vps2955.inmotionhosting.com -- port:465 -- socket:0x600000ad8d40 -- thread:0x608002468c00
With no "READ" or "WROTE" messages or anything else.  The "kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNone" seems odd, but I've seen that elsewhere.  I've also tried:
    * Turning off SSL and using 465 - failed
    * Deleting all related keychain items - no effect (after accepting the cert)
    * Running keychain first aid - no problems
I contact inmotion hosting and they said my settings all look right.  They can probe further, but I need to coordinate with my boss to get permissions for them to do that (maybe later today).
One additional thing - using network utility I am able to see port 465 on this server as expected.
I'm at a loss.  I've set up many, many e-mail accounts in the past and this is the first time I have ever had these sorts of problems.  Help!!!

Under no circumstances should you ever change the trust settings of any SSL certificate, unless you created it yourself. That's just about the most dangerous thing you can do with a computer.
Back up all data, then take each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Date & Time
Select the Time Zone tab in the preference pane that opens and check that the time zone matches your location. Then select the Date & Time tab. Check that the data and time shown (including the year) are correct, and correct them if not.
    Check the box marked
    Set date and time automatically
if it's not already checked, and select one of the Apple time servers from the menu next to it.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemCACertificates.keychain
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Show Info
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open. The dialog should show "You can only read" in the Sharing & Permissions section.
    Repeat with this line:
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
If instead of the Info dialog, you get a message that either file can't be found, reinstall OS X.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it by pressing command-V. Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
    Step 3
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
In the upper left corner of the window, you should see a list headed Keychains. If not, click the button in the lower left corner that looks like a triangle inside a square.
In the Keychains list, there should be items named System and System Roots. If not, select
    File ▹ Add Keychain
from the menu bar and add the following items:
    /Library/Keychains/System.keychain
    /System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain
From the Category list in the lower left corner of the window, select Certificates. Look carefully at the list of certificates in the right side of the window. If any of them has a a blue-and-white plus sign or a red "X" in the icon, double-click it. An inspection window will open. Click the disclosure triangle labeled Trust to disclose the trust settings for the certificate. From the menu at the top, select
When using this certificate: Use System Defaults
Close the inspection window. You'll be prompted for your administrator password to update the settings. Revert all the certificates with non-default trust settings.Never again change any of those settings.
    Step 4
Select My Certificates from the Category list. From the list of certificates shown, delete any that are marked with a red X as expired or invalid.
Export all remaining certificates, delete them from the keychain, and reimport. For instructions, select
    Help ▹ Keychain Access Help
from the menu bar and search for the term "export" in the help window. Export each certificate as an individual file; don't combine them into one big file.
    Step 5
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences... ▹ Certificates
There are three menus in the window. Change the selection in the top two to Best attempt, and in the bottom one to  CRL.
    Step 6
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    /var/db/crls
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "crls" should open. Move all the files in that folder to the Trash. You’ll be prompted for your administrator login password.
    Step 7
Restart the computer, empty the Trash, and test.

  • Mail 4.2 receive but not send emails

    Hello,
I've configured two email accounts to Mail. All worked, now sometimes I can receive emails but I can't send it.
If I try Window --> Mail connection inspector, I can see that the pop accounts are ok but the smtp account are thinking (server connecting).
The left side (MAILBOXES), the mailbox Send I can see that animated image of thinking.
I haven't change the configuration. Now I have tried some accounts: gmail and my own domain and they don't work. Now I am travelling, but I have Internet. I have test the ping with the net utility and it works.
    Could you help me?
    Best regards,
    Silvia

    Hi SilvLl,
I've had this problem, maybe six times, on multiple macs. There maybe two issues:
Firstly, if you can't send mail only when travelling. If your are not connecting into your ISP server directly (eg in another country), you can't send mail (but you can receive mail). If you change mail preference to your travelling ISP server, it may work. Webmail access to your mail account will work when travelling. Apparently, some mail providers offer a secondary mail out server to address this problem.
Secondly, if you can't send mail when at home. Check your settings are definitely correct. Apple have a checklist-(http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1277) to be 100%, call your ISP. This has helped me once.
Otherwise, it appears to be corruption of settings or preferences within Mail. Try reentering server out settings.
More extreme is to create a new (test) user account, and new mail identity - if sending mail now works, then the problem is within the mail program on your standard user account.
Lastly, rebuilding your mail by archiving/copying and reinstalling the mail program or deleting the reference file in the library folder. This took me ages, in conjunction with apple support. Frustrating!
    Good luck.
Personally, I think there is a problem with the mail program, due to the repeated occurrence of this issue.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

Superb advice R&W!  My email sending block using TalkTalk started 2 months ago using Snow Leopard, continued when I upgraded to 10.8.2, and has been persistent on my wife's new iPad (IOS 6.1).  Implementing your wise words has fixed all that, and now enables me to call her on FaceTime — previously only she could call me.  Thank you so much; this will save hours of further fruitless searching and phoning.
Please remember that your email is now insecure, if you wish to have a secure connection SSL must be on and port 25 should be avoided.

  • Why can I receive but not send emails

Why can I receive but not send emails on my i pad?

Perhaps the outgoing mail server settings are incorrect or incomplete.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.

    Actually in iPhone :
Outgoing Mail Server > SMTP "relay.skynet.be"
Primary server > Not Configured > Off
    Thank you ...

When you set them up, did you set up both the incoming and outgoing email servers separately, and did you enter the correct SMTP server name, and enter your userid and password even though it says "optional"?
Something else to try, if you haven't, is delete the accounts, connect the iPhone to iTunes, on the Info tab check the box to sync mail server settings, then sync. This should duplicate the settings from your computer to your iPhone.

Hi, my imail is receiving but not sending. I have 3 other computers in the office with different email address using imail and they are working fine? I deleted the account then added it and still cant send mail. its not a server issue because all other email address for our office email work just not mine.
    any help will do.

Try 'synchronize' under mailbox menu. Have had the same problem sporadically for no apparent reason. Have 3 email accounts set up and sometimes just one of them does this- different one every time. I call the ISP and it is not a problem on their end- and I know that is true because I can logon to the web-based version and see the emails that I am not getting in Apple Mail. Synchronize sometimes has fixed this problem for me.

Mail is playing up after I installed a new Snow Leopard system. I can receive but not send. As far as I can tell I have all the right settings. My (don't tell anyone) PC laptop works perfectly. Can anyone tell me where I should be looking?

Open Mail and look in Mail menu item "Window". In the drop-down select "Connection Doctor" and before checking in Connection Doctor look at the bottom of it's pane and show the read out print, then click on check server connection. This way you can see what the server is telling your Mac. Maybe you didn't set up the SMTP server settings correctly.
