I cannot drag files on my computer

So recently, I tried to drag a file from my dektop to my trash but it would not work. I cannot drag folders, or any other type of file either, but I can draw in Photoshop, make selections by dragging, etc...

There have been many reports of this problem.   Take a look at this link AND the links within it.   It may help.

can i drag files from one computer to another

You can, if you want to transfer files between macs I advies to use AirDrop(wi-fi needs to be enabled). Use shift+command+R, this will take you to your AirDrop in finder. Do this on both computers and you should see the user of the mac where you want to transfer files to.
If the seconds computer is a Windows, you can alway use a USB Drive, External Drive, through Dropbox(install dropbox on both computers and download the files that you need on the second computer) and if the file is small even mail.

  • Apple Remote Desktop ARD 3.7 cannot drag files from local to remote.

Apple Remote Desktop ARD 3.7 cannot drag files from local to remote. I've been able to drag n drop folders and files from my local to the remotes for years until the update to 3.7. Anyone else experiencing this issue? I've tried changing preferences. No luck. Maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere.
I'm on 10.8.5. Remote is same with 3.7 client. This happens with multiple remotes.

Let me guess.  The Get and Send clibboard contents buttons are greyed out too?
It is only affecting me on clients already upgraded to 3.7.    None of the clients on older versions are affected.
ARD is also crashing a lot.
Most of the time I go to a screen share to a client it takes way too long, so I clock Stop,  then try to connect again and works straight away.
Hopefully a patch will be released soon.

  • I cannot drag file over Dock and place into one of more opened windows - i.e. Mail

I cannot drag file over Dock, i.e. MAIL, wait a second, choose one of 2 windows - MAIL APP or NEW MAIL and place this file into opened New Mail. Normally I will wait until appear 2 windows with Mail app and New mail and choose NewMail and place the file into the new mail. This does not work for now and I have no idea why... Now it will Create only NewMail with this file attachment.
    I tried:
    1. Other Existing USER account
    2. Restart with SHIFT - SafeMode
    3. Reset PRAM
    4. Delete com.apple.dock.plist and restart with default dock.list
    5. It does not work on touchpad on my MacbookAir and with external mouse Logitech MX Revolution too
    6. I have no plugins in MAIL APP

Create an album and drag them into the album. Then you can easily select all of them in the album and email.

You can reformat the drive but that will wipe all the data on it. Move everything to your Mac. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility. If you need both Mac and Windows access, I suggest ExFAT. Then move it all back

I suddenly cannot drag and drop any files or documents. I cannot drag anything anywhere. I cannot drag into other files. I cannot drag into trash. There is no dragging going on. What do I do?
I have already tried "safe reboot." Nope, didn't help.
    Help!!!

Should I have deleted myself as Administrator and created a new Administrator identity, instead?
Not delete your old admin account, just make a new admin account & try that one.
I read on a different thread to try an Archive and Install. Is this a good option for me?
10.5.x does an Atchive automatically by itself, in theory you won't loode anything, but without a backup, as well as a problem, there's no guarantee.
    Try this if you haven't...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • HT1473 cannot drag files from pc to itunes

I have 10.7 installed and i cannot drop and drag files from pc to itunes and I cannot even add file to library

ReMacs, I do not have Snow Leopard Home Folder encrypted with Fire Vault.
I have not tried doing a search for a particular folder in my Mac while booted into Windows. I’m now also running my Windows BC partition as a virtual machine using VMware Fusion so haven’t restarted into BC lately. I rarely move files between Mac & Windows anyway but, It would be nice if it actually WORKED as it is supposed to work. I moved the files I needed to move from Mac to Windows using a flash drive on Mac while & then removing the flash drive & then restarting into Windows BC. If I needed to do this often it would really be a pain.
    robnick,
I assume that running that automator would delete my hidden Xauthority file & I could run that each time b4 I wanted to see my Mac home folder files while in windows.
I think I do not have rot user enabled which is why I cannot find Xauthority in order to delete it.

I followed the above instructions & at step 5 was stopped since there is no edit button on the lower right.
BTW, even using the Windows B.C. partition as a virtual machine--I am unable to drag any files from Mac to Windows!
I decided to test file sharing & went into System Preferences/Sharing and checked the “files” box. Now when running Windows as a VM in Unity mode (Where I can have Windows folders open next to Mac folders) -- I am able to drag Mac files into Windows! So It appears it WAS a file sharing issue!
I decided to restart into Windows to test. (Instead of running Windows as a VM) I still cannot see any of my Mac Home folders! So the file sharing didn’t help that. I suppose I have simply discovered a work-a-round when I run Windows B.C. as a VM in unity mode.
I also tried to search the “G” drive in Windows to find any document. No luck, said not indexed, so could not search at all.

  • Cannot drag files to Time Capsule

Trying to drag files from my Documents map to my Time Capsule map but do not succeed. File Sharing in the Disks section of Airport Utility is tagged to enable file sharing with Time Capsule password. When dragging and dropping, no password is requested, no error message is produced, not is any sound made. Somebody in another discussion suggested to double click on the Time Capsule icon in the left column, which would produce maps (subdirectories) in the same column, after which files could be dragged to these maps, however when double clicking on the Time Capsule icon, maps only show up in the right column of Finder. Please help.

So it seems I can no longer drag and drop like I used to, but copy and paste seems to do the trick. So, in a way, problem solved.

  • Cannot drag files to the ext.drive

bought a ext.drive for back up, it is an My Passport 1TB
if I drag or copie and paste any file or photo to the ext. drive and delete it from my computer it will then also delete it from the ext.drive
hope some one can help, returned 1 ext.drive already, but have the same problem with the second drive
    Thank you,
    Willem

Click on the HDD icon on your desktop.
    That will generate the image.
Use SHIFT COMMAND 4 and this will produce a cross hair.  Position the cross hair on one corner of the image and sweep it to the opposite corner.  This will generate the image on your desktop.
In the reply panel, click on the camera icon:
    This will produce this pane:
Drag the image on your desktop in to the box next to 'Browse', and then click on the 'Insert image' button in the lower right hand corner.
    Ciao.

  • Itunes library cannot locate files on new computer

I've attempted to transfer my itunes library from one computer to another; however, when I click on the music, I get an error message:  "the file for the song cannot be used because the original file cannot be found".  I attempted to import the library using Homesharing initally, then attempted to transfer it via an external harddrive.  When the computer is connected to the external harddrive, the music will play.

I know how infuriating it can get and how you start to doubt your own sanity. The best thing is to go back to basics.
    1) Locate your actual music files.
If you look on your new computer, by default your music should be stored in my music\itunes\itunes media\ if you cannot see folders in there which contain your music it is fair to assume the media isnt on your computer. I tend to suspect that the music is on your external hard drive which is why it plays when you have that plugged in.
If you find the music on your hard drive I would go into preferences in itunes and tick the option in advanced that I mentioned previously, then, in itunes go to file and "add folder to library". If you cannot see the menu bar which contains "file - edit - view - controls - store - help"   you may need to press ctrl B to show it, alternatively if you click on the little box in the top left corner of the itunes screen and drop the menu and select "show menu bar"
So now when you press the add folder to library simply browse to where your actual music files are, find the folder which has all you r music etc in it and then click "select folder" in the bottom right of the window.
If you have done all that correctly and have ticked the "Copy media to itunes folder when adding library" option in "edit / preferences / advanced" your music should be copied from your external hard drive into the itunes folder and all should then work properly.
Fingers crossed lets hope thiat works for you.
Just a thought - if that creates duplicate entries in itunes then I would select all your music in itunes and delete it, then go through the above again so you only have the one set of music.

  • Cannot drag files from dock

Strange thing has happened to me today. There are some apps that Id like to take out of my dock but everytime I try and drag to trash my screen momentarily locks up, the dock disappears and whatever it was I tried to drag out reappears. Anyone know what I might have done?? This is on my MacBook Pro. It started happening when I tried to load iMovie and IDVD from my iLife 06 disc. Thanks.

Barry thanks for that suggestion. I deleted the pref list as you suggested and rebooted and it worked perfectly. Was also a 2 prong problem as for some reason I was missing some files within the dock.app contents folder so I carried them from my iMac to the MacBookPro and Im back in business. Still running the latest Safari beta as well.

  • Cannot drag files to mail dock icon to compose new message with attachment

    Hello,
I can no longer drag images or files to the dock icon to open a compose message window with the attachment. I drag the file and nothing happens.
I first noticed using skitch. Then I tried both a jpg and word .docx from finder and neither worked. I then tried dragging to other applications like photoshop and that worked fine. So it seems to be isolated to mail.app
I tried repairing my permissions and that didn't fix the problem.
I am using the latest version of Snow Leopard, 10.6.2
    Lori

Alright well the problem is back and I did some further testing.
It works when mail.app is not already open, I can drag images or any type of file to mail, mail will open and create a new message with the attachment.
IF mail is already open, the only thing I've been able to drag are links from safari, images or files no longer work.
