I used the headphones in the laptop for the first time yesterday and have had this problem ever since. Any ideas

The internal switch in the audio output port is stuck. Try inserting the earphone plug a few times. If no success, try jiggling a tooth pick inside in order to trip the switch.. If still no success, have the technicians at the Apple store genius bar do it for you.

Insert a headphone jack and remove it and see if the light goes out. The red light indicates the switch didn't switch from head phone to your Mac's speakers. Some folks have actually used a match stick to undo the switch.

This has always worked just fine until the latest version of Firefox came out (I was using FF 7 until this weekend). Now FF changes the extension to .ashx when I open the file and I cannot download it into my software. If I go to the company internet site and download directly from there, it does the same thing. But I can open these files just fine from IE. I REALLY don't want to have to go back to IE.

Will this cable work for watching movies from my laptop in my HDTV?

Does anyone know if this works, I want to use a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable http://bit.ly/6BT6W3 to connect my MacBook Pro to my Sony LCD HDTV via HDMI to watch movies from my laptop in my TV? I read that there were problems with the audio using the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.

TS1574 no audio from built-in speakers and red light visible through the headphone port

My 15" late 2006 MBP has just stopped producing sound from the internal speakers and for the first time there is a red light visible inside the headpbone output port. Apple support says contact support but since I'm a long time out of even my extended warranty I wondered if anyone had a fix-it suggestion I might try myself?

Try to plug the headphone into and out of the headphone socket couple of times
to flip the microswitch in the socket.
Red light visible means sound output is stuck in digital mode.

Procedure is same for 10.6
Reset SMC.http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If these steps do not help, repair Apple Store is needed.

Thanks for your help. Since I'm uninterested in loading all my photos (the only option) into photostream, I won't be able to use the settings in ATV. I guess I'm just stuck with using iPhoto on my MB Air. Thanks again.

Rentals can only play on one device/computer at a time. Have you tried to play on the computer and still have that window open?
Have you transferred the rental to iPod/iPhone or iPad to watch?

it might be worth checking your TV settings to see if it has an option for different settings based on whether using the tv speakers or headphones.
Normally you should be able to control the sound via the tv.
Have you tried it without the headphones?

I got the same error and can't get it to work. My email and home address have not changed in the 3 years I've been using this device, my credit card info is up to date and my most recent rental was 2 days ago yet I get the error message on both the Apple TV and in iTunes. I don't understand what the issue is, nothing is invalid.

Sorry, but movies cannot be downloaded more than once without charge, so if you don't have a viable backup, you may be out of luck. You can, however, contact the iTunes Store, explain the situation, and see if they can make an exception for you.

How do I add a movie from my laptop to iTunes, what should be the file extension.

The extension is usually .mov, .m4v, or .mp4. But you can't just change the extension. The movies have to be encoded in a particular fomat. Anything downloaded from iTunes or plays in Quicktime player will be fine.
