I cannot get my pen and brush tools to look smooth instead of jagged. They look like 'zig zag' patterns. Using Mac/photoshopCS5. Suggestions? Thank you.-Lynn

Look under Brush Tip Shape and look at the spacing settings or that spacing is not unchecked. (the default spacing is usually 25%)
For tapered strokes set the Size Jitter under Shape Dynamics to Pen Pressure, then the size varies depending on how hard you press the pen on the tablet.

How to keep pen and brush's setting as per layer

Hi , is there anyway to keep the pen and brush setting remember as per layer , let say i have 2 layers of different stroke setting , after i draw 1 to another , it always revert to 1pt stroke width automatically .
i want to keep all the setting : transparency , color , stroke width to be remembered in layer . Therefore, i dont need to change again or remember whenever i draw in between layers.

Brushes have nothing to do with Layers. So no, you can't associate/restrict a given Brush to a given Layer. However, you can:
1. New document. Define two Layers.
2. Brush Tool: Draw something on Layer 1 with a Brush.
3. Brush Tool: Draw something on Layer 2 with a different Brush.
4. Appearance Palette: Set the New Art button to Maintains Appearance.
5. Press Ctrl to momentarily invoke the black pointer. Select the path you drew on Layer 1. Layer 1 becomes the active Layer and the Appearance of the object you select becomes the current Appearance.
6. Release Ctrl and draw anothet path. It is on Layer 1 and has the same Appearance of other items on Layer 1.
7. Press Ctrl, select an object on Layer 2.
8. Release Ctrl, draw another stroke on Layer 2.
...and so on.

In the beginning it says, "using my smart guides" and yet I don't see any smart guides. Nor does doing what I think is the exact same thing being told here produce results that are equal. When I click on a point, let go of the mouse and click on a 2nd point and then continue the process I start getting mirror triangles and then as I progress things start getting really weird. Obviously a few details were left out. No, I would have to say not a good place to be if you are truly a beginner as I am--too many steps left out, too many assumptions (like thinking I am aware of all the terminology) etc. Time to look elsewhere to learn. I thank Adobe nevertheless.

You may try the list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media, see below. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you may find the folder here:

5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);

6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

You can go to the Apple online store and purcahse a copy of Mountain Lion. This will give you a redemption code, which you can use to download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Unfortuantely, I'm not aware of any other way to legally purchase it. I have never seen Apple release Muontain Lion on DVD.
In terms of Apple Service, they just need the serial number of the machine to check the purcahse date. It is usually correct, to within a few weeks. A quick Google search should give you the correct number to dial.

I would delete the account and try to re-enter it. Also, you have to let your firm's IT department know that you want to sync work email on your personal devices before they actually work.

I'm assuming you are trying to log in using Safari on your ipad - if this is the case, you can't do that on an iOS device. You must use the Calendar app on the device. If you are using someone else's device, then you have a problem doing this. I just tried using Chrome on an iPad and that also doesn't work. If there's on nearby, use a computer's browser, that works.

If your Home Button works, you should be able to reset - press the Home and Main button at the same time for 15 sec. Then press the main button for 2sec to have it restart.

I would advice you to go to the link I sent you above: https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do and ask for an exception.
I don't promise that they'll change it but they may, mainly if the problem of the Home Button is going on since more than half a year (still within the one year warranty) and you just explain that you did not know that you could have changed it at the time and now it's completely dead.
If you really want to recover all your stuff and are living in the US, you should go to the nearest Genius bar and see what they can do.

Problem with Wacom Tablet and Brush Tool

When using the brush tool with an Intuos 5 tablet (mostly to edit layer masks), PS will become unresponsive to pen input - that is, I can't draw. The cursor moves, and I can switch tools with the keyboard, but pressing with the pen to tablet does not register. If I click with the mouse, it will register. If I use the spacebar to get the grabber hand then click and drag, the pen will again become responsive. If I click on a palette with the pen, I can draw again.
I have been in touch with Wacom, and at their suggestion, I have:
1. Downgraded the driver to the previous version.
2. Reinstalled the driver.
3. Connected the tablet directly to the computer rather than using a hub or wireless kit
This problem also occurred on my previous computer (mac pro 8x2.8ghz, os 10.8)
When using the same tablet with my laptop, the problem does not occur, nor does it occur when using a Bamboo tablet on the Mac Pro.
I don't see the problem occurring with other tools, but I don't use them as frequently.
One other thing I should mention is that I'm working on very large files (2-6G) but do have 64G of memory installed.
Currently using:
Mac Pro 8x2.93ghz
Mac OS 10.9.1
PS 13.0.6
I've been back and forth with Wacom via email for about a mothh, and I suspect they are out of troubleshooting options. They suggest the problem is with PS, but I'm not really sure.

Make certain you have "New Art Has Basic Appearance" checked in the Appearance Panel menu.
Also realize that the "Basic" brush, isn't really a brush at all. It simply removes all brush appearances from a stroke.

I'm doing a vector, however the pen and Elipse tools don't work as they should.

As I said, I'm working on a vector, but now whenever I use the pen or elipse tool, the shape doesn't fill in, even at 100% opacity. Changing to other tools I get a message that always ends with "Because the pixels in a group cannot be edited without merging the group."
I'm left scratching my head, I only started using photoshop a few days ago and would prefer not to merge the groups together.
I'm using CS2 if that helps at all.
Any help would be appreciated.

Making fools of us is just a Photoshop side effect I don't believe Adobe programmers do it purposely they just can't seem to get thing right so the keep changing and breaking Photoshop. Photoshop culture take some time to become accustom too.
