icant open firefox.it was checking compatibility of add ons and wont quit. this comp is suck a mess . spend your time fighting with one thing. i tell everyone i know not to buy one this thing is a mess cant open apps .why not let them open then a person could get rid of the ones we dont want. it sure is disguesting. you click on them drag them and they fly back up. some fun .comp are supposed to be able to look things up and read the news . not play around chasing apps .. why change . the xp was a real nice comp. did`nt need to chase apps around and still do`nt get them open. i cannnt say one good thing about this comp. it is a big big head ache
I am not clear what your problem is and importantly whether you are trying to ask for help with Firefox.
If you have a Firefox problem can you explain what you need help with please. If the problem is with a new Windows 8 operating system you will need to find a suitable forum to discuss that.

Above question covers it. I've tried reinstalling Firefox, clearing cache, history, etc. but still happens. I've created app tabs and when I restart Firefox, they are gone. Running Windows XP.
It is probably because you are not properly closing Firefox. Restarting your system would make sure that Firefox had terminated, but you do not have to do that.
To properly close Firefox on Windows systems, use
:File > Exit or "Firefox:" button > Exit
When you get the message "Firefox is already running" it is too late, and you must force termination of Firefox through the Windows Task Manager before restarting Firefox. Windows 7 has a keyboard shortcut to save you a step "Ctrl+Shift+Esc" then on "Processes" tab, select "firefox.exe" and use the "End Process" button. More thorough would be to right-click on the "firefox.exec" and choose "End Process Tree".
You would find firefox.exe in a Mozilla folder in your program files, but y0u would not want to delete it there, you would need to use the Control Panel which you have already identified and do it from there -- but generally you would not need to do that, and there is nothing in what you have posted to indicate that you should. But if you did do that, then don't let the install start Firefox for you as you would want to use you existing desktop icon or method of starting Firefox, and should decline having Firefox install start Firefox for you. When the install starts then invoke Firefox in your normal manner. This should eliminate problems of creating a new profile rather than using your old profile. -
I updated my fire fox on my MAC OS X to 3.6.6 version of firefox, everything went smooth till I open FireFox then the window firefox update opens up and about 1/3 through the process it gets stuck on Checking Compatibility of Add-ons and doesn't go any further. I have hit cancel and firefox opens but it doesn't open any web sites. I have removed firefox and re-installed and it is still doing the same thing. I have also let it run over night thinking it may just take a while and it never progresses, please advise, I am new to MAC but FireFox is the only browser on my mac that will open one of my business pages, known issue with mac for this company.

I have a set of Citrix servers, we need to upgrade the FireFox on them to 29.0.1
When I have done this, and a user runs FireFox, now the users are being presented with a pop-up "Checking Compatibility of Add-ons" which delays the start of FireFox.
I need to prevent this so users just see FireFox start up without any delays.
I have installed the add-on that re-enables extensions.checkCompatibility and tried various ways of implementing it like pref("extensions.checkCompatibility", false);
However we seem to have a situation where the add-on that enables the setting is not loaded yet so the setting is not implemented.

You can use a mozilla.cfg file in the Firefox program folder to specify new (default) values and possibly lock prefs.
Place a local-settings.js file in the defaults\pref folder where also the channel-prefs.js file is located to specify using mozilla.cfg.

After updating Firefox to version 6, the checking compatibility of add-ons is always running with each start of Firefox, and "Welcome to Firefox" site is always opening as well.
This is very disturbing.Apparently I wasn't clear or the word upgrade wasn't right. I meant going from 4 to 5. I downloaded it, installed it and got no option resembling that at all, it just saved a DMG to my hard drive and then told me to put it in my applications folder as always. I opened it and that was that, no compatibility check. I already got one error about an add-on that's vital. I'd backed up before I installed and saved Firefox 4 as a separate file before opening 5, I hope I'll be able to go back to it. The old system was really much better, what's the point of finding out after you already installed something if your systems will work? Or of avoiding installing because you're afraid they might not when everything very well might be fine? I can guarantee you that I won't be installing an major updates for a very long time, that's for damn sure.

This can also be a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (extensions.sqlite, extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox [[Profiles|profile folder]] to reset the extensions registry. New files will be created when required.

Each time I start Firefox a "Checking Compatibility of Add-ons" update window appears, which redirects me to a welcome to Firefox 5.0 page with my normal home page in another tab. I tried disabling all add-ons and updates as well as the force compatibility checker. I think my AVG safe-search bar might be causing the problem, but I have it disabled and never use it. Just installed version 5. As above I get the box then it goes to Firefox home page not my home page. I've updated and/or disabled every add-on or extension and it made no difference. I am in a university behind a tough firewall. I'd love to go back to version 4 but that isn't available.
Disabled add-ons will still be checked and can still be updated.
I don't know why you are continuously getting the message, you should only get it when there is a version change.
You can try solutions in https://support.mozilla.com/questions/817681 but you had better make a list of what extensions you had disabled first, because all of your extensions will be enabled when you delete/rename those files in your profile. You can use about:support to get a list of your extensions. (renaming is safer than deleting). -
Checking compatibility of add-ons BEFORE upgrading
There used to be a feature that would pop up with announcements that major Firefox upgrades were available where you could run a compatibility check with your add-ons before you upgraded. This current system where you upgrade and then hope that your favorite add-ons work and just report them if they don't is frankly useless. My add-ons are more important to me than any new features 5.0 is offering. I'm not as worried about security as I am about convenience. Add-ons are the reason I use Firefox and if they don't work then I don't need it. So is there a way to check compatibility before I upgrade? I've looked and can't find it and I've searched help and can't find an answer. Thanks in advance for your help.

not necessarily a problem, just inquiring. husband sends me web pages in a format that I cannot read and he tells me that he saved it as one of the "save page as" options - which I do not have multiple options just the one. there are some options I do not need yet are listed as add-ons. how do I get the add-ons and plug-ins more in sinc and delete those that we do not need. some only allow disabling not removing.
As an addition to this issue, I have noticed that Firefox Mobile has done the same thing to these sites. It causes all the same issues to happen in the same spots. Some feedback on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I have tried setting my homepage to Google and to Bing but Firefox closes as soon as the page loads. Starting it a second time works with no problems.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

You can try to reset Firefox.

Reset creates a new profile and tries to import some settings from the old profile leaving the old profile intact.

Also check the settings in your security software.
A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

In Firefox 5.0 I cannot view add-ons and can't tell if they're running.
When I click on Tools | Add-ons, Firefox just takes me to the Mozilla Web page for add-ons instead of showing me a list of the add-ons installed on this machine. I can't tell what add-ons are running and which are not. I re-installed Forecastfox, but I still can't see the Forecastfox information icons at the bottom of the browser screen. Adblock Plus is running, but now it has its own place in the Tools menu, separate from other add-ons.
Whew! Thanks. I wasn't expecting the information to be in the browser window. And now that I selected View Add-on Bar I can see the Forecastfox weather info. Thank you again.
