Actually you always use ethernet..
MBA does not come with ethernet port.. but apple sells both a cheap usb to ethernet and a much more expensive and much faster thunderbolt to ethernet adapter. With ethernet to eliminite this silly situation of setting up wireless over wireless, so if you make any change you instantly drops you off the network. Like cartoons of people sawing off the branch they are sitting on.
But you can reset.. no reset will do anything at all to the material on the hard disk. You must deliberately erase it.
Read the info because you may only need to do a soft reset. That is hold the reset for 1sec (2-3sec is fine) as long as you don't hold it for a full reset.

Even a full factory reset will not harm your files in any way, (or any further!!)
I am "concerned" that you have no backup to vital files on your TC. That is not wise. TC are no more immune to failure than any other hard disk.. (actually latest ones use the cheapest green WD drives money can buy) and keeping files in only one location is a receipe for disaster. An external drive is much more accessible.. cheaper and tend to be more reliable. There are too many things to break in the TC.. it is designed as a backup target for TM. Not a file store.

You said, "the 4 also has signal and wifi whereas the 5 has only wifi". By "signal", I'm assuing that you mean cellular signal. If so, that means your iPhone 4 is still active on your cellular number and your iPhone 5 is not. Contact your carrier to sort out which phone is active on your account.

You are experiencing Activation Lock. If the previous owner will not remove the device from their account there is nothing you can do unless the place you purchased it from will give you a refund.

I am in the same boat. I tried repeatedly to contact iTunes support, but was told each time that I had contacted the wrong deaprtment and they could not help me. There must be a way to still be able to use the iTunes store without paying for a system update. If not, I hope they will reimburse me the money I have in my acount.

If you have the latest version of iTunes you should not have to download the ipsw file separately as jalp suggests. iTunes will download it automatically.
This error (9) most often means that your antivirus or firewall (or router) is blocking access to Apple's servers. In rare instances it can also mean that the phone was hacked (or "jailbroken") to unlock it. If this is the case you must do a DFU restore, not Recovery Mode, as follows:
Reboot your computer
Disable your antivirus and firewall. If you has Kaspersky you may actually have to uninstall it, as it can never be turned completely off.
Connect the USB cable to a USB port directly on your computer, not to a hub. DO NOT connect the other end to the phone
Disconnect all USB devices except for mouse, keyboard and iPhone cable.
Launch iTunes
On the phone hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time for EXACTLY 10 seconds, then release the SLEEP button but continue holding the HOME button. The screen should be black. If it has an Apple logo this means you held both buttons too long. Release the HOME button and do it again.
While holding the HOME button connect the free end of the cable to the phone.
After a short while iTunes should recognize a phone in "recovery mode" (iTunes doesn't know the difference between DFU and Recovery modes, but the phone does)
Release the HOME button and don't touch the phone or the computer until the process completes or you get an error message. Ignore any displays on the phone.
If the error recurs the phone was probably messed up when it was hacked. This is not a hardware problem, or if it is, it isn't one you can fix.
You can try repeating these steps with a different computer and a different cable. If that fails also the phone is probably not repairable.

I have tried both of your suggestions multiple times but it still isn't working. I did not have this problem until I installed the new version of itunes. The names of the songs and the apps still appear in the library but the songs have an "!" to the far right. I synced my phone which has most of the media on it but it still did not restore the items that say they "cannot be found." Anymore suggestions? I copied the iTunes file from the external drive and it's in both places. I thought all I would need is the iTunes program (which I downloaded to new computer) and my iTunes library file. There must be something else that's missing. My iTunes library looks the same on the new computer as it does when I open it on the external drive. If I click on an iTunes library song from my new computer, it will only play if I have the external drive plugged in.
My back-up drive is a mess. I have multiple copies of music, video, photo, and document files and I don't know how that happened. ={ Obviously, I don't know how to back up stuff properly and there are back-up files extending over a 6- to 8-year period. I think all I did was just drag and drop the main folders from the back-up drive to the same main folders on the C: drive. So I have about 1000 songs that I can no longer access because they are linked to my old account. I cannot access that account, because the email I used for it was my old work e-mail. I got laid off in 2009, so I have no way to access that e-mail. Is there a way I can unlock these songs, or are they lost? You can update an older Apple ID that is no longer a working email address by using a new email address. Just make sure that it is not an email address that you are using in your second Apple ID.
Once you have rehabilitated the old Apple ID, authorize the Mac to use content from both Apple IDs.

I just got a new Macbook and I put all music on a flash drive from my PC to mac. Some music (seems to be the newer purchases) are grayed out and will not play??

I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro. All of my music was on a PC computer. I don't really know how to work with PCs but I am more than familiar with Macs. I have an iPhone with all of the grayed out music on it and they play fine. They play on the PC too. But when I transferred them over, they just won't play. There is also a little cloud with an arrow pointing downward which I thought meant download.
So I read another thread that said to log out of itunes and this would be fixed. I logged out and back in again and now the grayed out music is GONE. Just gone. I have everything on a flash drive still, so no big deal but is there a way I can get all of the music to download? And not be grayed out this time?
