I'd love some help trying to figure out why my 2008 MacBook no longer recognizes my external drive and now is not downloading photos from my iphone....?
After many years of having no problems at all on my Macbook, I recently figured I should finally upgrade my OS. I did that about three weeks ago, updating to Snow Leopard (10.6.8). I used Time Machine at least once after the OS upgrade but now Time Machine no longer recognizes the external drive I have used for all these years to back up. The MacBook does not "see" it. (Disk Utility does however.) The computer then also stopped recognizing another La Cie back-up that I have and now... my iPhone cannot download photos? Yikes.
I have, of course, shut down numerous times, used different cables (that worked for some) and the two USB drives. I even used a firewire. Nothing worked. I also tried to "Repair disk" on Disk Utility. It didn't work either, giving me an error (that I didn't save, sorry).
I read many other discussions on the file format of the external drive and of course I'd be happy to reformat the external drives--however, it is obviously a tad nerve-wracking to reformat drives before having an accessible back-up. Suggestions? I do not remember what file format they have but am pretty sure it's not the Mac file system someone mentioned. The drives are a 2009 WD "My Passport Elite" and La Cie 2007 d2 Quadra,
In terms of other hardware available, we do have another MacBook Air but it has started rejecting both drives as well (without the Snow Leopard upgrade). We have an old Dell but it wouldn't have the disk space to help out much.
Any thoughts on the process involved would be welcome. Any ideas on the iPhone rejection would be helpful as well! It is a 30gig iPhone 4 that has 20 or so gigs free (not clear as iTunes says that there are abour 18 Gigs on the phone but 24 free gigs? I may be bad at math but that's 40 gigs...).
I am checking out iCloud but apparently there are only 55 gigs available?

Being a mom leads me to eat up a fair amount of gigs with photos of my kids and, in fact, I think I entirely replaced the original drive, so it is a couple years younger than 2008 since I did that in March 2010. If there is some way to verify that (whether or not I replaced the entire drive), I'm all ears. I have 311 Gigs free, so it is not a space issue. I verified the startup disk on Disk Utilityand nothing showed up.

The La Cie is format Windows NT Filesystem 3G ....At the time that I bought it I was still using a PC as well as a Mac and was told by afriend to use this format...
The WD is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I again tried to repair the WD last night and this is the error message: "Error: DiskUtility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
Also, Time Machine tried again to back-up and gave me this error: "Files can't becopied onto the backup disk because it appears to be 'read only'. You may needto repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can't berepaired, you must use a different disk for backups. Open Time Machinepreferences to select a different backup disk."
Question 2. Other cables...

Question 3... Fire Wire from the La Cie
Yes, I used the Firewire cable from the La Cie and it is indeed present, though still not visible in Finder. Since it is not Mac OSExtended I know that I can't use Time Machine with it.
So, in summary...
I can plug in the La Cie and it is functional on the MacBook, visible on Disk Utility but not visible in Finder. The WD drive is not visible and not functional. So we can think it is indeed the WD that is not working.... Also, the iphone photos did, in the end, get downloaded, so it is not something more general.
Causes...
I forgot to mention that there is a "lost+found" file on the WD which apparently points to a UNIX /OS issue?
Some kind of "insurance"?....
I'm curious about how people avoid this kind of issue. You just regularly replace back-up drives and hard drives before problems come up? Time Machine is great and saves many of us from disasters, however, knowing that your Time Machine back-ups are vulnerable makes the whole system insecure. No way to have alarms ring before the drive goes out?
As for ways ahead...
It seems that I ought to be able to copy off of the WD to the MacBook then erase it and reformat it and start over again. However, I haven’t been able to see its contents except on random occasions. If you have any ideas on how to copy the Time Machineback-ups from the WD, again, I'm all ears!

Trying to figure out why is there a keystroke delay many times in Pages and Numbers? I'm on a 2010 macPro running Lion
I had a similar problem when working on a long Pages doc (40,000 words).The glitch only occurred on this one Pages file and affected no other applications. I fixed it by duplicating the file, trashing the original and working on the new document. I have no idea of the cause of the problem.

What is selected under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes?
If the videos are in an iPhone compatible format and are in a folder of photos selected to be transferred to your iPhone under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, do you also have Include Videos selected under the Photos tab?
Or if the videos are in an iPhone compatible format, they need to be in your iTunes library and can be selected under the Movies tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes to be transferred to your iPhone. -

i local to portland free diner to wjo ever helps me out or my wife is going to kill me for severe time lost!~Import is just a word for copying photos from the phone to a computer and not that different than what I do in Windows -- although I haven't compared the speed on a large number of photos. If you are importing and using iPhoto, you might try doing it with Image Capture which will allow you to copy them directly to an external drive. It may be faster than doing it to iPhoto but I haven't compared the speed. Instructions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 are shown below.
Connect the iOS device to the computer.
If Image Capture does not open automatically, you can navigate to your Applications folder and open Image Capture from there.
Choose the location to which you'd like to import pictures.
Click Options.
Click the Options tab if it isn't already selected.
Enable the option "Delete items from camera after downloading".
Note: Deleting photos after importing helps to reduce Camera Roll size, and it improves backup and restore times. You may choose Keep Photos if you wish to import the photos to additional computers.
Click OK.
Click Download All. -
I cannot seem to load raw images into LR 2.5. I've been using this for years. I always load from memory card, but it gives me an unknown error message. I tried to load from camera, hard drive, & external drive and still will not work. I checked import menu and nothing has changed. I loaded the photos onto my tablet and images are fine, so do not feel it is the memory card. Any thoughts?
The error message probably said "unsupported or damaged"
The T3 requires Lightroom 3.4.1 or later. You can either upgrade to a more current version of Lightroom (version 5.6 is the most recent) or you can use the free Adobe DNG Converter to convert the RAWs to DNG, which should import into Lightroom properly. -
Need help- trying to figure out if Spotify would work for my senior living community
We are a senior community that has activity programs running in like 7-10 areas in the building. Music is a big part of our day. CD's for all these areas is getting crazy. There has got to be a better way. We want to be able to pick music genre, a song even to hear and have playlists. What we have currently: We have some laptops and desktop computer using windows. We also have a few MP3 players, boomboxes and IPODS. We also have Wifi. But sometimes of course we have Wifi issues. We have access to usually a laptop or boombox. We could use the MP3 players/ipods. I like the idea of playlists that we share, pulling music that is alike. These are my quesitons or issues below: Things are my questions:1. Can we have 1 account be made for different appliances and be on spotify at the same time? Premium said 3 but you can't be both logged in under each account. Is this still true? Postings were old. 2. With even the Spotify family can you be on to the account at the same time? 3. What would be our best solution for this for accounts- would we have to set up different account for each device if we want to play at the same time? Any ideas - I just really need suggestions4. If we did our laptops, we would need speakers? Also for boomboxes- is this possible? I am assuming using like an MP3 player or IPOD. Spotify work through them? Is it certain type of MP3 players and IPODS. I believe a few of ours are older ones. 5. If we have tons of accounts, can I start all accounts on same computer? Would I set them up by each device we have?6. Can you run ipod/mp3 through large TV speakers? or laptop music through big screen tv speakers?7. For the music itself, can you pick what exact songs in playlist? Can you make lots of playlist per account? I saw 3,300 songs but can you name the playlist and stay forever? 1: Each Spotify account can only play on one device at a time. You can have the account logged into as many devices as you want, but you can only play on one device at a time.
2: With Spotify family, there are several Spotify accounts under one plan. Each account is able to play on one device at a time.

4: You wouldn't necessarily have to have speakers hooked up to the laptop. If the laptop has speakers or you input headphones, that should work. Spotify doesn't work with MP3 players/iPods. To use Spotify you have to have the Spotify app.

7: Yes you can search Spotify and add any song you want to a playlist. And you can also make lots of playlists. Each playlist has a limit of 10,000 songs. The 3,333 limit you saw is for the offline limit on premium accounts. Up to 3,333 songs can be downloaded for offline listening.
Hopefully this information helps. The family plan can have up to 5 accounts. It might end up being too expensive for what you need. The free plan has ads, but it still might be worth looking into.

Hi - Re Keynote I'm trying to figure out how to create a music album (as an artist) on USB flash drive, (accessible by both Mac and PC). What I want is a background picture with 'click-buttons' to play each track listed, and play in order (like a cd) - also similar for embedded videos and photos etc. This should all be on the one page.
Is this possible with Keynote, or any other software package for Mac (am using Macbook Pro) ?

New IOS causing weird email issues. Also trying to figure out why mail taking so much room?
Two part question. :I have been trying to figure out what is causing the large amount of "other" in my Iphone memory which has essentially wiped out my 16gb 4s.
After a lot of hunting around, it looks like 6.2 gb is just in my email settings, which seems very high. I do save emails for awhile on the phone, but periodically clean it out and never have had this issue until quite recently. Usually I didn't even notice the "other" part of my memory when syncing.
Second issue--as part of my process, I downloaded the latest IOS (7.0.3) and after I did that, it shows I have 483 "flagged" emails in my mail folder.
I actually have 31. Any idea what could be causing this? Before I downloaded the new IOS, this # was always acccurate, but now this # is way off. Wondering if there could be any tie in to the memory issue?
Also, trying to figure out how to manage the email down to a # that won't take up so much of my memory. Again, it seems like just in the past month my "other" category started to grow, but my email usage and # I save hasn't changed drastically so not sure why it is growing so rapidly.
I have downloaded iexplorer, but can't figure out how to view any possible duplicate emails or issues there? Haven't tried a restore, if I restore will I lose all of the emails on the phone.
Any ideas?As additional info, when I delete an item from flagged folder, it still shows 483 items aa flagged. Very strange.
Before I downloaded the new IOS, if I deleted a "flagged" item, it reduced the # accordingly. -
I am connected to the computer with my phone and it says there are 0 photos to import, however I have over 200 on my phone to import. I am trying to figure out how to get itunes to recognize the photos on my phone. This has never happened before.
Have you tried to reset the iPhone and tried again to import?
To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. -

I wonder if anyone can offer me some advice to rectify the problems I'm experiencing in my itunes?
I have been saving my media to an external hard drive since rebuilding my itunes collection, while keeping the library on the hard drive of my MBP. This was working well with no problems but as my media reached 300GB on my external I thought I would copy it to another external hard drive as back up, and after that I decided to also make a copy of my library data to the same second external drive so I would have a full back up of itunes in case of failure of my main hard drive...
So after copying my media from my first external drive to the second, and then copying the library data from my MBP hard drive it seems the copy of my media and the copied library are working fine on my second external hard drive, but now when I open the first external drive where I originally was saving my media files I am suffering quite a lot of broken links???...I followed the copy process as I have done in the past although I did not tick the check box for renaming and moving my media as it was about to be copied,and I thought that was correct as I used the consolidate function to copy it..
Been trying to figure out how to rectify the problem tonight and am getting nowhere fast. Can anyone offer suggestions as to how I can sort the issue on my original external hard drive as it's the one I prefer to store my media on and it was functioning perfectly before?? from having a tidy and clearly functioning itunes I now have a mass of problems....

Move the following files and folders from /Volumes/Backup/iTunes up to /Volumes/Backup/

iTunes Library Genius.itdb
iTunes Library.xml
sentinel (hidden)
Launch iTunes. It should warn that the library is missing. Browse to the file /Volumes/Backup/iTunes Library.itl and open it.
Go to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and change the media folder location to /Volumes/Backup/Music. Let iTunes consolidate files if it asks, if not use File > Library > Organize Library... Tick Consolidate files and click OK.
Close iTunes. Rename /Volumes/Backup/Music as /Volumes/Backup/iTunes Media. Start iTunes.
Go to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced, check that the media folder location now reads /Volumes/Backup/iTunes Media. If necessary, change and then close and reopen iTunes.
Go to File > Library Organize Library... and, if not greyed out, tick Rearrange files in the folder iTunes Media, then click OK.
Delete /Volumes/Backup/iTunes/iTunes Media which now contains redundant copies.
Move the following files and folders from /Volumes/Backup/ into /Volumes/Backup/iTunes
Album Artwork (folder)
iTunes Media (folder)
iTunes Library.itl
iTunes Library Extras.itdb
iTunes Library Genius.itdb
iTunes Library.xml
sentinel (hidden)
Launch iTunes. It should warn that the library is missing. Browse to the file /Volumes/Backup/iTunes/iTunes Library.itl and open it.
Go to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced, check that the media folder location now reads /Volumes/Backup/iTunes/iTunes Media. If necessary, change and then close and reopen iTunes.
Each time you change something and start iTunes just check that a track will play. If not, close iTunes and undo your last action.
That should be it. You can clone this iTunes folder to any other drive and the clone is a functioning copy of your library.

ITunes library help - moved to external drive and now my apps are gone?
I moved my iTunes library to an external drive, but now my apps are gone? I do have iTunes match and iCloud, so my songs are all on the cloud, but none of my apps are showing...
I copied everything over, consolidated, but I must have messed something up as I think I have too many library files on the external drive now. I can see all my files on the external drive, but they are not showing up when I open itunes. It looks like it linked to a new copy of a library as only my most recent apps are showing, nad none of my existing ones are on itunes. What should I do to fix this? How do I know which files to delete?
Thanks.I followed the instructions from Apple support to move itunes to an external drive, did what it said (obviously I messed something up). I then started itunes and missed the part where it says to tell itunes where the library was, and consequently itunes created a new library with none of my apps or anything in it.
All of my music is on icloud and I als ohave itunes match, so all of my music is on the cloud.
I have read some of the other postings to delete the newly made (and missing apps) itunes library file and ithen point it to the correct library file, but I am now paranoid I would delete the wrong one.

I tried ti open a 2 year old movie (3.2 GB) through iDvD today from an external drive and got the spinning color wheel. I restarted the computer to see if it would stop and it let's me login but then the color wheel continues to spin. Any ideas?
After admittedly only a quick read the one thing you don't say is how you are trying to make this move. Most people with moving library issues do it the wrong way. Plenty of web sites tell you how to do it the wrong way.
If the iTunes application is started before the drive with the library is fully mounted and awake iTunes will revert back to the internal drive.
