I don't understand then new Apple Mail

I have been a Mac user for four years now and love it, but I am frankly a little confused since I upgraded to 10.5.2. and its version of Mail. I feel a little dumb, because I am sure it is a simple answer. Here goes-
I am able to click on my mailboxes, but I have 2 things that I cannot seem to open. One is "On My Mac" and the other is my mac.com folder. They both have triangles that point to the right, and I cannot open them to see what is inside. My inbox, on the other hand has a down pointing triangle and I can open it. Can someone explain the difference? Mac Help is not very helpful.
Thanks in advance.

Hi.
There was a same issue on my mac as well. Here is what you have to do..
Do you see "On My Mac" under trash?? If yes, then thats the .Mac account which is configured. If u don't have a .Mac account you can go to Mail preferences and you can get rid of the .Mac account.
If No. Then that will be some mail box. If you don't have any mail in it you can delete that mail box.
Same with the other one which has a triangle. You cal delete that if that doesn't contain any Mail.
Cheers.

When exporting and then importing Apple Mail from one mac to another I get "Some messages could not be imported. Partially imported mailbox will be labeled IMPORT" . That mailbox does not appear.
    Any help would be welcome

This is a bug in Mail. The mailbox archiving function does not include attachments, which  gives the error with the import. To workaround this you can create a mailbox in Mail and copy to it all emails you want to export. Then go in Finder to [user]/Library/Mail/Mailboxes en select the created mailbox. Copy this to the public directory of your other mac. Then start Mail on that other mac and import the mailbox from the public directory. Should work now.

  • New Apple Mail - When replying to an email, it doesn't maintain the same account that the email was sent to

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion. I have 5 different pop accounts in Apple Mail. It used to be that when I replied to a message that was sent to account 4, it would default the reply-from to be account 4. Now, whenever I hit reply, the default sender is account 1... the one that is chosen in preferences under Composing > Send new messages from:...
How do I get it to always reply from the account to which the email was sent?

At time I am not going to try to answer for two reasons.  The latest version of Mountain Lion is 10.8.2 and that will update your Apple Mail to Version 6.1 (1498). I hope this is very helpful for you?

  • New e-mail address, so created new apple id, iTunes store asks for password for old e-mail/apple id

There are lots of posts on this subject over the years about this problem but none of the solutions work for me.
Apple id problems go back many years, if they cant handle that, how do we trust them in security issues?
anyway, here is what it says.
    Sign into iTunes store
Enter the Apple ID password for
    "old e-mail address"
So I enter the password (same one as before, it works in Mail etc on the iPad, only a problem on iTunes store.
App updates would not work, but they finally did when I did a iPad reset and backup restore.
But the iTunes store apple id problem is still there.
I am a user of Apple since 1982, do not like where things are going, honestly, but they are the only game in town. Not a fan of overly automated system processes with no feeling of "transparency" in the way things happen these days.
Can anyone help?  If not I will live with it, but..........this is not the old Apple any more.

It may not be called Express lane any longer, but this is where you find it now: https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action
On your old email - Apple does not assume an email will not change. This is why they provide for recovery if you no longer have access to the email. In order for that to work however, you needed to have followed their recommendation and set up your security questions and/or provided a secondary email address. If you not longer have access, they you can try calling Apple and asking for the Account Security Team. If you can convince them you are who you say you are, they may be able to help reset your password.
Are you saying iTunes on your computer is updating all Apps? If so, I don't understand how. Apps purchased on your old Apple ID are able to be updated only using the Apple ID used to purchase or download them. If what you ar esaying is true, I suspect only thos apps tied to your new Apple ID are being checked and updated. If it is happening as you describe, your iPad is the one behaving as it should, not iTunes on your computer.
Please do not take offence to this but it still seems as if you don't understand how the Apple ID works, not just that you don't agree with it. I've refined my analogy a bit, so please bear with me. I am not trying to be condesending but I HAVE tried to made it as simple as possible for anyone else that may read this.
Imagine you buy a house. You have keys to the house and once inside, you buy all the funrniture you need - with one condition - because of some complicated distribution agreements with the furniture manufacturers, the seller mandates that the furniture you buy must be used only in that house.
Some day in the future, you lose the keys to your house so you buy the house next door with its own new set of keys. You go inside the new house and wonder where all your furniture has gone. Simply, you own both houses but
Upset at this situation, you try to recover your keys to your first house by asking the bank to mail them. You once had the chance to give the bank an alternate address to which they could mail keys but didn't so not they can only mail them to the first house. Since you can't get inside, you cannot retrieve the new keys that they send.
After getting some good advice, you decide to talk to visit the bank personally. You convince them you are the owner of house #1 and they give you a new set of keys. Yay!
You go back to house #1 and finally manage to get in. But, since house #2 is newer, you decide to live there. Now you want to move your furniture so you have a comfortable place to sit and sleep. Oops, you can't take the furniture from the old house because of your agreement with the Furniture seller so you have to buy new furniture.
    House = Apple ID
    Keys = Password
Furniture = Apps and other content purchased with the first Apple ID
    Keys = Password
Alternate Address = Alternate Email Address
    Furniture Seller = Apple
Furniture Makers = App Developers, Film and Music Rights Holders
You may not agree with this, but the fact is, Apple owns very little of the content they sell - basically only their own apps and iOS itself. Allowing merging of Apple IDs or transfering ownership of Apps from one Apple ID to another is a logistical nightmare and would create major issues with app developers, music and film rights holders and anyone else who provides content for sale through iTunes or the App Store.
You cannot compare a functioning iCloud with non-functioning iTunes and App Stores. iCloud doesn't care about your apps - it's about syncing and identification (iMessage, Facetime, iCloud services like Find My iDevice) only. So long as you are using the same Apple ID on each device, it will sync between them any supported content you decide. In fact you can use a different Apple ID for all there if you wanted. The key is to be CONSISTENT.
One additional thing we have not brought up already. If the iPad was activated with your original Apple ID and you ever need to restore it (not an uncommon possibility), you will run into a problem with Activation Lock. It's a security feature designed to discourage iDevice theft by rendering it useless if one tries to activate it using anything other than the Apple ID used to activate it originally.
Again, you may not agree with how it works, but I hope this finally makes sense and you at least understand how it works.

  • Apple mail not displaying properly

My first time in this forum.  Hopefully, you can help.  I am having a problem in Apple Mail in Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3.
Some e-mails from the same sender appear fine with images and links properly displayed, yet other times I only see text with underlined links.  For example, I receive promotional e-mails from Land's End (a retailer in the U.S.) with images of the items.  Some e-mails display perfectly and others are as below in the cut and paste.  (I have noticed the problem frequently with Google news alerts.)
Any idea of what settings I should change?  I am very confused because some mails arrive fine, and others are like below.
P.S.  I am a new user of iMac, so please be patient if I do not understand well your instructions.

Thanks for your suggestion.  I do not think your proposed solution will work for me.
    1) In my desperation, I erased my hard drive and even reformatted it (with the help of Apple Care).  I then opened Apple Mail with a completely clear hard drive and system.  The problem still occurred.  For that reason, I do not think it is the INBOX.mbox file that caused the problem.
    2) My iMac that is less than a month old is now in the repair shop.  It apparently has a faulty logic board and USB port.  Hopefully, the Apple Mail will work after those parts are replaced.

  • POP3 Apple Mail vs M-Me Mail - any conflicts? (besides bandwidth overload.)

As long-time user, with four year's traffic totaling over 10 MB of mail folders and posts (not including media or downloads), I love the idea of having it both ways:: MobileMe web access, when on the move, and traditional local storage of posts, for desktop use. There is a very large benefit to having my mail history (+ documents directory) stored by mobileme, idisk (copied manually), Time Machine, AND on my MAC mini. Many is the time I wished I had a third source of recovery from errors or disasters...
That said, there is really high overhead on re-sorting and retransmitting a whole Christmas Tree of folders and files, across clogged nets, just to search for a file or check the health of the indexes...
My question is: does MobileMe in any way affect the prior functionality of Apple Mail via POP3..?
I am worried, because I see, more frequently than ever before, glitches in the indexing of my mail folders. Searches go awry, folders are missing or folder names get moved into different sub-directories, or messages will appear in more than one directory... I am mystified.
Generally, the old reindexing feature, plus checking permissions using Disk Utility (plus getting the current OS-X update) fixed everything. BUT, with the latest upgrade, I see the new recommendation is to: "move (all) the mail files, and then ask Apple Mail to recreate all the folders" .. and their contents, by download from the MobileMe servers. This is a SCARY BIG piece of network traffic, even on 3000 KB/s Verizon DSL.
If this sounds like a 'grumpy old man', you are correct Mark me enthusiastic, but cautious.
My history includes a first programming success on an IBM 1620 in 1962, using punch cards and the GOTRAN interpreter. Later, after RPG in the Navy, I wrote BASIC on an Ohio Scientific 6502 CPU, BASIC on a Ti-99/4a... Then, BASIC & APL on Service Bureau's timesharing, and finally PERL and HTML on the net. I do a lot of 'Office', as well.
I was never really happy, until finding Karelia's SandVOX, on the mini... see: http://charitykicks.com I love my six year old MAC mini - using it, and with OS-X, I eagerly bailed out of the "you-know-what" 'world' ...
I plan to buy a new 'machine-tool-milled' mini, with all its new I/O, once the fuss dies down. Half my purchase will be software ..!
Please, please, please ... give me technical support for the idea that those of us 'early adopters' of personal computing may quickly embrace 'cloud-computing' without fear that our extensive work environments will not be held hostage to several third parties' bottle-necked bandwidth.!

Long term, MailForge looks like it's going to become a worthy replacement for Eudora. Check it out:
    http://www.infinitydatasystems.com/mailforge/index.html
As far as importing into Eudora OSE is concerned, I've done it without experiencing any adverse effects. It won't "take over" as long as you keep the Eudora OSE application separate from the "real" Eudora - and don't have both of them running at the same time (both trying to access mail servers etc.)

  • Finder behavior I don't understand

The thing I don't understand is why Apple did this...
Usually when you copy some files from a folder to another in which are already presents some of the same files the Finder ask you if you want to ignore the duplicate ones.
    Like that
You have the option for not letting doing the copy of the files already presents (non sostituire in italian)
Then while working on files something different happens.
Watch the video. Why Apple did that? It's a non-sense.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/sdmysgheg0omnj4/CopiaML.mov
The Finder copy 2 times the same files! Where is the "don't overwrite" option?

So do you think this is normal?
Don't you think it was better and simple to understand in the past?
I'm an advanced user so I know how to understand how Finder works, but some many new Mac users don't.
I'm only telling that a "keep both" function is almost useless because if I select some duplicate files and also some unique ones it ends with keeping duplicates that needs time to copy and are a space waste.
This function would be fun if the Finder do an hash on those files and find that they have tha same name but not the same content.
Before that was way better, now I need to install third party softwares and for "new to mac" or "new to computer" users this is NOT so great.

  • How can I tranfer all my hotmail and yahoo contacts to ichat and apple mail?

My mother bought a new Macbook Pro and I'm trying to export all her email addresses/contacts to the apple mail and ichat.
Any clue on how to make this process more time effecient?
    Thanks!

The safe "step 1," of course, is to keep an unaltered copy of the 10.4 Mail folder and plist so that if something bad happens on the new machine, you just throw out that folder and plist and try again.
The safe "step 2" is that instead of dragging the folder into the same place on the new Mac, you can copy it to a separate location, like a temporary folder in Documents, then in Apple Mail in your new Lion MBP, use File/Import Mailboxes. It will ask you where the mailboxes are, and after you point it to that folder, I'm assuming it will import and convert them to the new format and place them in the correct sub-folders. If it goes well, you can then delete the temporary copy that you made for import purposes.
The 10.4 plist might be too old since it's 3 major versions later; you can try putting it in the Preferences folder, but it seems safer to note all the settings in 10.4 and re-enter them from scratch.

  • Apple Mail on Lion

    Dear all
When the new Apple Mail loaded from Lion's platform I was pleased with its look.  My mailbox was split into 3 columns: mailboxes, message previews and then a large window which would show the content of each email as I clicked onto each email.  Somehow I have deleted the final window and I dont know how to get it back! Please help.
    Thank you

I only asked as it seemed apple have removed a feature from mountain lion that was actually quite useful, that being the option to save account passwords in keychain or not. I have automatic login enabled which i guess i should switch off and add require password on wake for more security.
    Thanks for your comments.

  • Outlook functionality gone in Apple Mail

Im a former PC user who has seen the light. I used to use Outlook for email. It had a setting to allow you to send mail on a delay, e.g. 5 mins. I loved this as I often hit send and then went back and make a change or two to my emails before they actually were sent from my computer.
I can't seem to find this functionality in Mail. I'd even settle for being able to see the message in the outbox (where I can reopen if I'm quick enough), but the outbox is hidden.
Any suggestions on a work around. Any widgets out there that add a delay to sending the mail?
    Thanks,

As an update, I've confirmed that even today's backup shows all the messages are still where they should be, but they don't appear in the Apple Mail Inbox. They do appear in the backup Apple Mail Inbox. Any ideas on how to get my mail to re-appear as it should?
    Thanks.

  • Which Apple mail preference will result in quicker receipt of email -

    "automatically" or "every minute"?
    Thanks

    Well, I'm not sure.
Here's what I have, maybe it will make sense to you:
Comcast is my internet provider, which I understand is "pop". My daughter linked my Comcast email acct. to Gmail somehow so I would have Imap, so my devices (laptop & Iphone) would snyc. . So I guess I'm "Imap", right?
What I'm trying to do is to just make sure I receive my email asap. I don't know what the Apple mail setting "automatacially" means so I dont know if I should set my preference to that or "every minute".
    I hope this expanantion helps.
Thanks for takng the time to respond.

  • Problems with Apple Mail attachments not showing in Outlook

I am experiencing problems when using the new Apple Mail 5.0 (with OSX Lion) to send PDF attachments. The recipient using MS Outlook on a PC will see the email, see the attachment icon (paper clip) but they cannot click to open the attachment.
It's like the attachment was stripped off the email.
Any suggestions on how to fix this issue?

This however, maybe the cause (with no real solution but to switch to plain text format): http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesoftwareupdate/thread/7 98ae640-9091-44c9-b663-63152eb2f0fe/

    Hi All.
I just can't understand why new apple tv is called "new" by apple. Its just size of hard drive is bigger ....or I am missing something?
    Regards

I knew about software thing. A software upgrade dosent makes Apple TV new, for me anyway. I guess it won’t be last time when Apple release upgrade software for Apple TV, so they will call again “new” Apple TV. I am just trying to make my point here because usually “new” in Apple terms mean new hardware, interface etc.
Anyway I got first generation (if I can call that a first generation) Apple TV and hopefully upgrade will come soon to us.
    Thanks all.
