i restored my iphone4 to factory settings because it was running slow and some apps werent working. My phone is now stuck in repair mode and is continually rebooting itself. I know the usual solution would be to restore via itunes but itunes will not allow me to do anything as i get the error "itunes cannot find disk"

If you want to solve your problems, unjailbreak. And don't do it again, because jailbreaking causes problems as you read about in that article. You can try Recovery Mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Restart the device.
Restore as New.
Might also be a good idea to contact the carrier just to verify there are no account issues. -
i had recently followed orders to restore my iPhone 3gs (iOS 6.1) from a question on apple support. However it was working fine before that, it's just that my phone didn't have signal. So it said to restore my iPhone and now it says that the Activation server is temporarily unavailable and when i plugged it into my mac, it said that i ddn't have a sim card installed. What can I do to fix this besides bring it to the store? it also bugs me because this answer was supposed to work but it just messed my phone up even more. Not a great analogy, but this is a user-to-user forum, and Apple will not allow discussion of jailbreaking; if someone tried to help with jailbreaking the message would be deleted. However, if you have a jailbroken phone Apple will generally not block a discussion of how to unjailbreak it. The only problem is that not all jailbroken phones can be restored successfully; it depends on the method of jailbreaking (which I can't discuss without THIS message being deleted). -

ClareAll of your apps should be in iTunes on the computer, simply sync them back.
If they are not, go into the purchase history and download them again. -

Only the former owner can remove the Find My Phone lock and erase the device. That can be done remotely. Without this the device is useless to you because it will be permanently locked. -

With everyone and their iDogs trying to update at the same time, things are gonna be a bit bumpy off the bat trying to update and/or activate.
All anyone can really recommend is to keep trying or wait until a bit later, after the hubub has died down.

Did you buy the phone new or used? If you bought it used, you will have to talk to whoever you got it from. You cannot bypass the activation lock. Only the owner of the account it's locked with can release the lock.
