I give up! iPhoto wins...

That's it I give up -- I cannot fight with iPhoto any more -- I throw in the towel and write of the latest expense on iLife 5 (should be called iNOLife -- cos you will have no life after installing this piece of garbage trying to fix the mess iPhoto makes.
The latest thing iPhoto has done to me has just thrown me over the edge. After the latest update to 5.0.4 iPhoto has completely trashed my library. Here are some of the problems -- duplicate roils, iPhoto has duplicated and in many cases triplicated film rolls, rotating many of the pics.
I am now having to go through the entire library deleting these extra rolls.
It has corrupted many of the thumbnails leaving me with the blank thumbnails (yes I have re-built the library and thumbnails several times.) I now have to figure out which rolls contain these corrupted files and delete them and reinstall the lost photos from backups.
It has re-inserted deleted photos from the library too -- what a pain to figure out what was deleted and re-delete them. And it has taken all my film rolls and combined them into one roll as the last added roll!!
Plus it is SLOW, SLOW and takes for ever to quit. I love the features of iPhoto but I cannot justify using it any more so I am actively looking for an alternative. What recommendations do people have for an iPhoto alternative? I tried portfolio but it was more complex than I needed. I am presently evaluating iViewMediaPro and I like it but it is rather expensive, next I'm trying iViewMedia. Any suggestions?
Come on Apple admit it, iPhoto is a DOG, fix it! Other software developers manage to produce photo software that works, why can't you.
Plus has anyone got a refund on iLife 5? I would like to get a refund as I only bought it for iPhoto, I don't use any of the other programs.
After every update I work through the problems and just hope that Apple will get it right next time but this last episode with iPhoto has frustrated me beyond belief.
So long iPhoto...

OT,
Thanks for the great info -- the link you gave (What can be done about slowness?) proved to be invaluable. I read through the discussion and decided to give the scripts to remove the exif data by Sebastien Flory a try.
I downloaded the scripts and read through the instructions. In order to make this work I had to download a file called "jhead", and I had a problem with this. When I downloaded the file it came as a ".txt" file and Terminal wouldn't make it executable. I tried removing the ".txt" extension from the file but it still wouldn't work.
I didn't really know what I was doing but I suddenly had the idea to try the download on my other Mac and this time jhead downloaded not as a ".txt" file but just as a file called "jhead" with a blank icon which I was able to make executable with the Terminal. Why the difference in the downloads on the different Macs I am not sure, maybe someone more knowledgeable can throw some light on this.
I copied the executable jhead file to my other Mac and ran Sebastien's scripts. It was easy to do and took about 20 mins to process my 3.61 Gig iPhoto library.
When I started iPhoto with the new exif stripped library it was FAST and responsive just the way I expected iPhoto to be, and it closed down in a instant. I did a comparison between the old and new libraries:
The old 3.61 Gig library took 23 seconds to open and 1 minute 11 seconds to close. The Library.iPhoto was 98.6 Mgbs
The new exif stripped library took 9 seconds to open and 5 seconds to close! The Library.iPhoto is 2.9 Mgbs. Amazing!! The new library scrolled and responded much faster than the old library.
It seems that the combination of a Nikon D70 and iPhoto was causing my problem.
Of course all the data about exposure, white balance etc are gone but I never use them anyway (the date and time remain). It did remove all the keywords so in future before I remove the exif data I intend to make an album containing photos with the same keyword so I can quickly re-apply the keywords and then delete the albums.
The problem remaining is what happens to new photos added to the library, as OT says it will start the bloat all over again. I intend to make my photo import a two step process from now on -- I'll import into a temporary iPhoto library, strip the exif, and then export and re-import into my regular library. Maybe I can make an automator action to do the job for me until Apple gets this sorted out.
A very interesting experiment-- maybe I'll continue to use iPhoto a while longer. I'll be very interested to see how stripping the exif data from my other 16 Gig library that I basically gave up on when I upgraded from iPhoto 4 to 5.
Thanks again OT.

  • Unable to install Win 8 Pro on GPT 3TB disk

I am unable, with all the willpower in the world, to install Windows 8 Pro on a 3TB harddisk.
I have tried about everything, I'm an IT professional and I just can't get it to work. The pinned topic from xmad does not work for me at all.
I'm using a Z77A-G45 motherboard with the latest official UEFI BIOS (2.9). I boot from the UEFI DVD Drive with an official Windows 8 DVD, check my disk is in GPT mode (it is) and continue the installer.
When I arrive at the disk partitioning screen, I select create new partition and Windows creates a 100 mbyte partition, a 2 TB partition and leaves about 750GB as unusable.
I check the disk and windows has moved it back to a normal non GPT disk.
I tried manually creating the partition with diskpart: an EFI partition with 30 megabyte for the bootloader, and MSR partition of 300 megabyte and a primary partition of 2.7 TB. After refreshing the partitioning screen I see the correct partitions and Windows simply says "can not install on a disk that is in EFI mode".
I've searched and read and tried every thing but I just can not get this to work. I'm getting pretty desperate here and would like any and all input you can give me.

Enable win 8 mode in Bios, but disable msi fast boot and fast boot for now.
It is easier if you install from a usb, re-format and clean the drive using diskpart and follow the guide then.
If any trouble, update to the latest bios here:

  • Black/Blank Screen with Boot Camp Win 7 Install on new 27" iMac

I'm having a problem getting Windows 7 on a new 27" iMac and am familiar with the Boot Camp Windows installation process. Here's what I've done...
    1. Run Boot Camp from OSX, partition the drive.
    2. Insert Win 7 cd, proceed with installation.
    3. Computer restarts and the 'preparing for initial setup' message displays with the Win 7 splash screen. When it switches to where it should be displaying the Win 7 desktop, the screen is black.
I can hear the Mac still running, but there's no display. It's like it's waiting for some type of user input for the intial Windows setup (haven't yet entered the key).
I've done a hard shutdown and restarted Windows with the exact same result. After reboot, I get the 'Windows was not shut down properly' message with the 3 safe mode options, where choosing either gets me the 'Windows cannot complete setup in safe mode'. And any key reboots it.
The Mac side still runs fine and holding the option key at start up gives the Mac/Win boot options.
I'm inclined to think that it's a video driver issue since the 27" is brand new. Maybe Apple used a new video card for the larger screen and haven't updated the Boot Camp drivers. I checked on ATI's site for an updated driver for the Radeon HD 4670 they say is in the new 27" model that's currently available. (not the quad core)
Is there any workaround for this? I was thinking of installing Vista instead, and upgrading to Win7 once installed, but if it's a driver thing, it would just be a long way to the same result and could have the same problem with Vista as well.
    Any ideas?

I think I figured out what is happening here with the video drivers on the new iMac's and Win7. I believe it's re-directing the video to the mini display-port output when you see the screen go blank. I installed my Win7 x64 with no issues but I had an external monitor hooked up at the time and while it was installing the O/S my iMac went black but everything moved over to my external screen. Once it finished installing then everything went back to normal after a reboot.
Not sure if that helps anyone but pretty sure that's what is going on. So if you have another monitor handy, get the mini display-port adaptor from Apple and connect your external screen before you install Win7. Cheers!
P.S. If you have one of the new iMac's and want to install the latest Radeon drivers (after you have installed Win7 on your iMac), try the following. Download and install the drivers from ATI/AMD directly. They'll try to install and fail (no worries) but now the driver/install files will be unzipped into an ATI folder on your main Windows hard drive.
Now go to this site: http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php and download the tool and use the Vista instructions listed on the main page of the URL above. You shouldn't need to download the MSXML 6.0 and I don't think you need to disable the UAC stuff like they suggest for Vista (I didn't) and it works fine. UAC is not nearly as intrusive on Win7 as it is in Vista so I think that's why it worked for me and pretty sure the MSXML 6.0 is already in Win7. Once the program has modified the mobile Radeon drivers then you can run "setup" from your ATI directory and the new drivers will finally install correctly including the Catalyst Control Center. Voila! I now have 9.10 drivers up and running on my new 27" iMac and working perfectly so far.

  • Where are the actual files kept in iphoto

I was wondering if anyone can help me as to where the actual files are kept for the iphoto library as when you look for them in Finder it just gives the iphoto library but when you click this then it just brings up the library not the individual files ?

If you're looking for the photos for use outside of iPhoto read Terence Devlin's treatise on file access.

  • Iphoto: unwanted date/time change after import

    Two problems:
First Problem: In October, 2012, scanned a photo into my MacMini in JPEG format.  Creation date 10.12.2012 , Modified date 10.12.2012.  This is OK.
This is an old family Christmas photo, so I use "touch -t" command through the Terminal application to change Creation and Modified dates to 12.25.1957 at 2PM (1400.00 hours).  Use Finder/Get Info to check date of JPEG file and confirm change of date and time.
Then, import JPEG file into iPhoto:  iPhoto shows date of JPEG file as 12.25.1957, but time is now 3:34.02PM (1534.02 hours).  Use File/View in Finder to look at iPhoto file and discover that date and time are changed to 12/31/1969 at 7:00 PM (1900.00 hours).  What's going on here?
Second Problem:  Received a JPEG file by email and moved it to the Desktop.   Creation date and Modifed date of the file are the date and time they were downloaded from email onto my MacMini, which is today: 1/30/2012 at 11:30AM.   Use "touch -t" command through Terminal application to change Creation and Modified dates and times to 10/20/2012 at 6PM (which is when the picture was actually taken). Comfirm change through use of Finder/Get Info  capability.
Import JPEG file into iPhoto and time gets changed to 7:34PM (date stays 10/20/2012).   Look at File/Reveal in Finder and the dates are still the date and time of the download from email onto my computer.  What gives?
Iphoto version is 9.4.2.  All system software up-to-date.

That command is the adjust time/date command - not the batch change command
Adjust T/D takes a group of selected photos and applies a constant delta to them thereby correcting for camera setting errors or time zone issues
Also note that this is a user to user support forum not a path to Apple - it is a great plce for questions about how iPhoto works - it is an extremely poor place to make requests for changes since there is no one here who can do that.

  • Why doesn't iPhoto '11 import my .JPG files from my camera when previous versions did?

I bought a Mac mini with Lion and converted my iPhoto library from under use by Leopard.  However I just tried to download photos from my Kodak camera and get the error message that the file format is not supported.  They are only .JPG and .MOV files that have worked previously with iPhoto since I got the camera years ago.   Taking the SD card out and using a card reader results in the same error.  What gives with iPhoto '11?
Any immediate help would be very much appreciated.  I was trying to upload pictures to a website for a Christmas gift, and wasn't expecting iPhoto to choke with my camera's files when it never has before.
    Thanks.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
I would note there is a long-standing issue between Kodaks and some versions of OS X - the workaround for that is to use a USB Card reader.

  • Share Aperture & iPhoto Library

Is it possible for Aperture to use my old iPhoto library or do they have to be two distinct librarys? I'm not quite ready to give up iPhoto but don't want to duplicate my 100GB library.
Also, is there a maximum size, or perhaps a recommended size of library to kep the application running fast? iPhoto is a bear to load now wich I assume is due to the size of the library.

Leaving Files in their present location is known as Referenced Files. Lots of pro's & cons. Managed Files have the masters kept in Aperture. The main difference you have probably gathered, referenced frees up internal HD space. You lose a major Aperture feature, as the vaults won't back up the referenced files, but a back up as you import is possible so not such a big deal.
The really good news is you have the option to change at any time. My advice is to feel your way round Aperture before dealing with the real thing. You can even set up the whole workflow before bringing in a single image. Shoot off some unimportant pictures and have some dry runs before going for it. It may be you could just leave iPhoto as is and just start using Aperture instead. Then just bring stuff over as and when required, in a way you are comfortable with.
A lot of people seem to come unstuck when they first get Aperture and in particular coming from iPhoto and bringing a lot of images to Aperture. There is a lot that can go wrong. It seems intuitive on the surface but not when you start to delve a little deeper. I would say there are a lot more implications if you don't leave the masters were they are. Also much depends on what you want to do, people seem to not want to totally leave iPhoto behind them. I was glad to see the back of it when Aperture came out but thats me. It's not even on the machine, i've no use for it.
Aperture is a jolly good Darkroom in a box. Perhaps the bulb is duff in the safelight though. But i'm sure you will get to love it; eventually.

  • How do I save websites to iPhoto?

I'm a freelance writer, including website content. I'd like to post the webpages I wrote in the portfolio section of my website (created in iWeb) as they appear online. How do I do that? I think I need to convert them to jpgs to save them to iPhoto first, right? But I don't know how to do that. I'd appreciate whatever help you can give me.

iPhoto has no ability to import Web sites and this is the first time I recall someone trying to use it for that purpose.
You could print the webite to pdf and then import the pdf to iPhoto.

  • IPhoto won't open since Snow Leopard upgrade

    Hi,
Since upgrading to snow leopard iPhoto won't open, it just crashes instantly. I ahve tried reinstalling with no luck.
    Can anybody help with this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan.

i just bought a new MBP 13'' 2.53 Ghz 4Gb Ram 250GB HD... i tried moving my iPhoto library from my powerbook g4 1.67 machine that was running 10.4.11 (via a Lacie external)
once i moved this and opened iPhoto (on my new MBp running 10.6.1 - SNOW LEOPARD) it instantly asks me to upgrade the library (saying that the old library needs upgrading for this version), so i click upgrade, and then 2 seconds later it says that the library is corrupt and damaged and i must install from a back up...
I deleted iPhoto then emptied trash after clearing up some space on the external, meaning i lost iPhoto applicaton - IDIOT I KNOW - so i download iPhoto 8.1 and the library upgrade and error / damaged library message appeared again...
I have now, (as i type this right now) re-installed snow leopard from the snow leopard disk that came in the MBP box (i have had it like 2 weeks, thats it, it shipped with leopard and i am having to install SNOW LEOPARD, for the 2nd time) to get iPhoto back)... will this give me iPhoto back, or do i have to re-install from the LEOPARD OS disks that were sent in the MBP box, the OS that it shipped with?
i am very annoyed that it seems that my iPhoto library from a 3.75year old machine cant be on my new machine unless i re-add each PBG4Tiger10.4.11 individual library folder thru the interface of iPhoto on my new machine... (if indeed it will ever open)...
    PLEASE HELP !

  • Lost imovie and iphoto

I have installed Tiger on my g4 imac and forgot to save imovie and iphoto can anyone please explain how I restore old system (ie what order the discs go in ) and how do i start again with tiger

Assuming your iMac G4 shipped with Panther 10.3.x and later the
system was upgraded by installing Tiger over Panther content, so
the Panther-level's iLife components were carried over in Tiger...
And your later Tiger retail installer, having none of that within it,
does not give you iPhoto or iMovie, etc with a new full install.
The Panther restore and install original disc set may be able to
provide raw materials to use Pacifist: http://www.charlessoft.com/
and hope it can make use of those Panther-vintage bits on disc
to assemble and install a working iPhoto and iMovie from them.
I'd tried Pacifist to install a Tiger-vintage iPhoto in a computer
which had been wiped and upgraded past the original Panther
with a retail Tiger 10.4.0 DVD installer and was able, after three
tries, to get a working iPhoto 5.x version. Or I think it works.
    {This was from a non-working iBookG4's restore/install DVD.}
To find a good condition stand alone iLife 06 or 07 may be a
better way to go, since that should be Tiger compatible as
well as being able to run in the older PowerPC G4 machine.
The video or graphics hardware, and need to have a DVD
or super drive, limits some of the later iLife software titles.
Some iMac G4s can't really use the last iLife versions, not
to the degree you'd hope; given they are vintage, not Intel.
I have found a good tool to have, even with iPhoto on the
same computer, in ToyViewer. It runs free and has tools.
And it can do more than most beginners may need, well.
ToyViewer 4.92 free running image software:
    http://homepage.mac.com/t_ogihara/software/OSX/toyv-eng.html
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • IPhoto is so slow that it is inoperable

Hello!  I need your help!   I have only less than 8000 photos (as counted in my iPhoto Library photographs) and 2 very short videos, added memory to 12 GB, got external HD (only less than 10% used; 906GB free), and still get color wheel spinning all the time, cannot even scroll the list of photo icons (in Library) more than a few rows in a minute.
I do not know what is wrong. I have no problem with other functions or applications, web surfing, mail viewing etc.
The following factors might have or might not have affected the above problems, but I do not know if they are of any significance:
*I had upgraded my iOS to Marverix several days before the symptoms apppeared.
*I have about 4 unfinished photo books I am working on, of which 2 have 170 photos and 270 photos each.
My iMac is 21.5" Late 2009 model, with OSX ver. 10.9.1, Intel processing 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo.
Macintosh HD has 499GB capacity while only 81GB used and 418GB available.
iPhoto version = 9.5.1 (Latest upgrade)
The situation is so bad that I am beginning to think that I should give up iPhoto and iMac as well.
    Thank you for your help!

    Hello Terence:
Thank you for your quick response. Yes, I had forgotten to mention HD space: it has 418GB available out of 499GB capacity (used 81GB).   External HD is portable drice attached to iMac by USB cable, manufactured by Seagate.  The performance speed of iPhoto did improved a little bit right after it was installed about a week or so ago, but as soon as I started to work on my book project, it returned to where I was before adding External.
I really appreciate for your advice.
    Thanks,

  • Windows 7 64bit error message during system backup

As part of a backup routine, I have a scheduled disk image backup to an external hard drive. This worked happily for some months - until now!
I now get an error message -
" The operation failed due to a device errror encountered with either the source or the destination. If the source or destination in on a disk, run CHKDSK/R on the source or destination volume. and then retry the operation.
Details: the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
    Error code: 0x8078012D "
I have run CHKDSK but no errors reported.
Also I have tried two different external drives but get the same problem which makes me think the problem is with Windows Backup rather than the external drives.
Searching the web showed a solution or two but nothing worked - still got the problem.
    Any bright ideas?
    Thanks in advance
    David

    Thanks C3PO
I do suspect that the problem lies somehow with the program and I have queries outstanding with MS and on one of their forums. However it has to be said that the answers, so far, have not helped.
I've checked that the relevant MS Services (in msconfig.exe) are running and used CHKDSK on both source and destination disks without finding any evident problems. What I have also come across is a fair number of comments that the Win 7 Backup program is unreliable in any event - one user saying that system image backups only work about 4 in 10 times.
I agree that the problem is unlikely to involve Toshiba - nevertheless a user of the Toshiba Win7 forum may have experienced the same problem.
In the end, I think I will simply give up on Win 7 Backup and use Norton, although the system image backup was quick and neat whilst it worked.

  • Adjust Date/Batch Change

Since upgrading to iPhoto 11 (9.2), I can no longer adjust the date on my photos.  I had thousands of photos scanned in and I am trying to correct the date from the date scanned to the date taken (which I have on paper).  I could always do this before with no problem.  I could also Batch Change but that is grayed out along with Adust Date and Time.  I've clicked everything I could think of but no success.  Ideas?  Maybe a Windows solution!

Thank you!  Apple and I have a different definition of "selected".  I consider a picture opened large (like when naming faces) to be "selected".  iPhoto does not agree with me!  (iPhoto wins!)

  • Aperture Newbee - Just a few random questions.

I'm thinking about buying a new macbook pro 17" and Aperture. I've played around with it at an apple store and its awsome in my opinion.
My questions are, will a Canon S1 IS work with Aperture?
My second question is can I import my iPhoto library in to Aperture?
    Thanks Taylor

    Hi Paul,
Yes you are quite right about this, but it's not the full story. Aperture does get its support for RAW from the OS (CoreImage). That's the engine, and it seems to parse most of its work out to the GUI (despite my 4 x G5 horses sitting around doing nothing). However, the parameters driving the REQUIRED conversion of RAW to visual image for the SPECIFIC CAMERA are held in RAW.PLIST. I tried to edit this for my own point-n-shoot (Canon Powershot s40), and failed to get a good image. Every camera apparently needs different param. values based on the physical sensor array, pixel sensitivity, and conversion of signal to chroma color, etc.
My prime cameras are covered (Canon 20d).
I've tried in vain to find where iPhoto keeps its RAW parameters, as it must do this camera specific conversion also. Whether it does it on CPU or GPU (my guess is CPU), the camera specific parameters to decode the camera's proprietary RAW are still required. (BTW, DNG does not help, as the data held is still camera specific even though the format is universal. Pathetic really isn't it?) However, it does explain why many have commented on the far better RAW conversion in AP vs.iPhoto, even when AP was at 1.0 (more time by the developers balancing params between color saturation and luminosity perhaps as they focused on fewer cameras???).
So my questions to Aperture Development and Joe is this:
    - WHY can't you at LEAST give us iPhoto level support vs. no support, and
    - WHY do we have to await an update of the OS, when the parameters are externalized in RAW.PLIST and that could be updated at any time?
    - What am I missing other than time available/testing needs etc.? Surely you must desire to get these complaints put behind you?
