  • External Monitor with iTunes - iMac screen goes black

I have an iMac with iTunes 7.7/Leopard and an external VGA monitor (I use the standard Apple mini-DVI to VGA converter) then I use the external monitor to watch video from my iTunes library.
All works well - I have my desktop spread over both monitors, I fire up a movie from iTunes, move the video window across to the external monitor and everything is good - I can watch the video on the external monitor whilst continuing to work on my Mac - the iMac screen displays the Mac desktop as normal.
However, if I put the movie into fullscreen mode (view -> fullscreen on the iTunes menu), the external monitor displays the movie in fullscreen mode as it should, however the iMac monitor goes black.
The only way to fix this is to exit fullscreen mode and go back to one of the view options (rg fit to screen).
Any ideas how I can have my external monitor in fullscreen mode and have my desktop back?
    Many thanks

  • IMac screen goes black after 1+ hours of use and we can't get out of this.

I have a mid-2007 iMac.  When anyone is on the computer for approximately 1-1.5 hours, the screen goes black and we cannot get out of this.  There are no time restrictions or power-saver settings on.  Can anyone help me with this issue?

You cannot do anything with the iPad until you do as instructed by the iPad and connect to iTunes on a computer.
You probably need to restore the iPad and the only way to do that is via iTunes on a computer.
Take it to an Apple Store and ask for help at a Genius bar or take it to a friend's house that is running iTunes on their computer and try to restore it.
You will lose all of your data and settings now because you never backed the iPad up in the past.

  • My brand new iMac screen goes black intermittently...

Hi - I bought my 27" iMac about 3 months ago and pretty much since I got it occassionaly the screen goes black. I'll be working away and all of a sudden it goes black. After a few seconds it comes back on, but this can't be good? I asked my local computer guy and he said it was a known issue due to safari and not to use safari. That seemed to fix it but A) I like Safari and B) it's started happening now even when I'm not in Safari. Any ideas?
    iMac 3.4GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB ram, Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB, OS X 10.8.2

That's ridiculous. Take it in for warranty service.

Why start a new and very similar thread to your other one which you have not responded to (have you read the replies?)
I suggest that no response is made to this duplicate thread.

  • Imac screens goes black

My 2007 Imac's screen started going black.  I can hear it still running, and even hear sounds from programs.  After awhile though I can no longer hear the progams. but it still sounds like its running.  It happens when I open games apparently, hasn't done so with just browsers and itunes open.
I'm guessing it's a graphics card but wanted to be sure.  I have an ATI Radeon HD2600 256MB.  Can I replace the card on this machine?

ok, my screen has now gone black it wont come back on, looked on utube, there is a vid on there how to fix this problem, tried it, didn't work, so i found a workaround, thunderbolt connector to DVI, i think its called (thunderbolt to another monitor) bought this cable, £20 from PC World, apple store 1 hr drive, PC world 15 mins, found a spare monitor, plugged all in, nothing worked, both screens black , but then pressed COMMAND F1 BOOOOOOOM ............... only joking spare monitor is mirroring the iMac screen, so all working again till i can get a replacement screen.

  • 10.8.3 iMac screen goes black, unresponsive

This is happening more and more often.
During regular use, the screen will go black (not off, because I can see a faint glow around the edges) and it becomes completely unresponsive. In addition, I just learned that it will not charge my iPhone when this happens so I guess the USB ports are dead as well.
A couple weeks ago I had 2 instances of the crazy video flickering and jumble so I thought it was a video card issue. Now with the addition of the iPhone/USB thing, I can't be sure.
When I restart the computer by holding down the power button for 5 seconds, it starts up fine and the phone will charge again. This is going to become a real problem as I'm sure I'm frying the computer's brain evey time I have to do this and I'm going to start losing data. Thoughts?
    Here's the config:
    iMac 27" 3.4 Core i7
    OS 10.8.3
    12 Gig Ram
    Radeon 6970M 2048M
    Thanks for your help.

First, try resetting the PRAM >  About NVRAM anrd PRAM
If that doesn't help, Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)

If nothing above helped, could be a bad graphics or video card. Run the OS X Mountain Lion: Apple Hardware Test

  • New vBIOS, BIOS and EC problem on GX740 (screen goes black)

    Hello,
I have a problem with my GX740 after flashing. I used forum flasher to update my BIOS, vBIOS and EC. Current versions: BIOS .10F, EC: .406, vBIOS: .031.
I use Windows 7 64 bit with SP1. The problem is that after flashing, whenever the laptop gets a little "heated" due to extensive work, the screen turns black or grey for about 10 seconds and then i got an error that display driver stopped working, but it's now ok. I tried uninstalling graphics driver and installing the one from msi page. Nothing worked. Any ideas guys?

    Quote
Alrighty, done everything properly, but the problem persists. Tried playing Tomb Raider and everything looked fine until about 3 minutes, when the black screen showed again. I have noticed that about to 65 degrees on GPU it's ok, higher than that the screen goes off.
    does it worked fine before?
    Quote
Ah, during the VGA driver installation at the end there was a message saying that there were some problems during installation,
    what problem?

Also, Driver Fusion premium query isn't so important, right?
yes its not important, but it need to be run at Safe Mode.

I upgraded to latest version of mountain lion yesterday, this morning my power Mac was running extremely slowly (while typing, had to wait a second or two for words to appear), I shut down to see if problem would clear up.  When starting up, screen went black with programming jargon, something about debugging with the word panic in parentheses.  Screen then goes back to gray, says Mac encountered a problem and has to restart once I push a key.  Apple logo comes on gray screen, icon keeps circling and nothing happens.  This has happened three times in a row after shutting down and trying to restart.  Any thoughts?

When verifying disk, said could not repair disk, back up as many files as possible then re format disk.  Computer now doing Internet recovery. Should I. Do the following in this order
1 restore from back up on time machine
    2 re install osx

  • 24" 2008 iMac screen going black

My 24" 2008 iMac screen keeps going black then coming back after a while. What temperature would it need to get to in order to knock out the display? I have iStat.
Also, if the screen fails due to graphics card or other component, is it possible to connect an external display to use it until I can upgrade to a mini?
    Cheers.

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • [Solved] Screen goes black when I run "xrandr" with displayport connec

I am running Arch on a Dell Latitude E6500 with Xorg, nouveau, and Gnome 3. The graphics chipset is identified by lspci as "01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G98M [Quadro NVS 160M] (rev a1)".  So far, everything has gone swimmingly with the integrated monitor. Today, I tried to connect an external monitor via DisplayPort. I initially connected the monitor with the system booted and logged in graphically. The external monitor did not receive a signal, so I ran xrandr in an xterm to see if it was being detected. As soon as I ran the command, the laptop screen went black. On a reboot (this time with the DisplayPort cable plugged in from the start), the boot process stopped at the end of the systemd messages (ie, the boot was successful, but X did not appear to start). Connecting to the system via ssh from another machine, I set DISPLAY=:0 and ran xrandr:
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 800, maximum 8192 x 8192
    LVDS-1 connected primary 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 331mm x 207mm

    720x400 59.55

    720x400 70.08
DP-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
So, X does appear to be running, but isn't actually rendering to either monitor. I noted that there is no "*" next to a graphics mode for DP-1, which I took to mean that no mode was selected.
I then ran "xrandr --output DP-1 --auto" in an attempt to wake up the monitor. This had no effect on either monitor (I still had the boot messages on the integrated monitor, and a blank screen on the external), but running xrandr again showed that the default 1920x1200 mode was selected:
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3200 x 1200, maximum 8192 x 8192

Googling has turned up a number of people having issues with DisplayPort, but in these cases the external monitor simply needs to be enabled (xrandr --auto, a BIOS setting, etc). Has anyone experienced this situation, where the working primary monitor stops working?
    Thanks!

I got a displayport -> HDMI cable to try the laptop with my television. This worked seamlessly, with X auto-detecting the new monitor and correctly enabling it with a default of 1920x1080 (interlaced). I also was able to change it to 1280x720 (progressive) with xrandr. Since the monitor I originally tried with straight displayport also has an HDMI input, I tried the new cable there and again was met with success. I'll mark this as solved with the likely culprit being something very strange with my displayport cable (I had ruled the cable out since the EDID was properly reporting the monitor model and supported resolutions).

I did some more digging, it appears to be a backlight problem only. I can see the screen very dimly if I use a bright flashlight in a very dark room. It also seems to run ok if the brightness is turned down a LOT.
So I'm thinking this is a LED driver board issue or the display itself. I'll open it up and check the connection between the two and see if I can get any more clues. At least I can use it somewhat now by dimming the display significantly...

A few days ago my screen went black and stays black.  It is a 20" intel core 2.0 duo processor Model #A1224.  Serial # W8740 which I guess means it was built in the 40th week of 2007.  When I restart the screen comes on for only a second or two and then returns to black, every time.  I know the computer is booting as I can hear it working and if I look very close at the screen I can see windows open and if I hit the space bar I can faintly see the windows highlighting but the screen is very much black and the windows are barely visible.  I can also turn the volume up and down and hear it.  I have tried all the different resets suggested in the related discussions and have removed and replaced the ram, nothing has worked.  From researching I am guessing it is one of two things.  Either the video card attached to the logic board which sounds too much to have replaced or possibly the lcd display. However none of the other topics I have found have the exact same symptoms so I am not sure what the problem is.  I do not have coverage as its a 2007 computer.  I found a lcd for around $130 and think I can replace it but am not sure if this is the problem.  Also apparently I would need a different lcd if the current one is made by lg, but the only way to find that out is to take the current one out and look at it.  I don't want to do that unless I am sure its the display.  Any suggestions or related issues would be very helpful.  I am probably due for a new computer but don't want to lose everything on my current computer, it is my personal and business computer and holds a lot of important info and applications.
    Thanks in advance!!

    Any suggestions?
