Does anyone have an ideas about what I could do, to prevent all my things deleting, because I won't be spending more money on apps that I have already purchased once!!

1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.

[Music files are still there, and I can play them on my computer directly from the iPod [just one track at a time] but not in the usual way, through headphones.]
On the Summary page of iTunes for the iPod, it shows 50-plus gigabytes of "Other" content and no music, which was not previously the case. I assume this is related to the problem.
I can bring up individual tracks on the iPod and see cover art, but cannot play the music.

iCloud is free, iTunes match is $25 a year.

I'm ready to bang my head against the wall! I can put the device in recovery mode, connect to iTunes on my computer, and get it back to the setup screen, but when I go through the process again and try to do an iCloud backup I get the same reset/restore loop.
I could start from scratch, but I really, really, really don't want to go through all of my hundreds of apps, reinstall them one by one, etc. etc. etc.

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

The iPod has no native texting capability. It can send/receive messages to other suitably equipped Apple devices Via iMessage. To text to non-Apple devices, you will need to download a text App from the App Store.

I have just tried to install the full version of Anthill to my iPod touch Gen 4. I get a message on the iPod saying "Anthill failed to install" and an error on the computer "OxE8000004". I already had Anthill Free installed so deleted it in case it was interferring with the new download. I can install other free apps but now can't even install Anthill Free. I have tried the 7 resolution steps advised by Apple and have totally run out of ideas as to what I can try next. I am using a new laptop since installing Anthill Free the first time and am now running Windows 7, otherwise everything else is the same. Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks.

this one is actually a really rare symptom of a flaky connection to the ipod on a Windows PC. there's more going on in terms of hardware on nanos and 5th gens than in the earlier models ... so if the connection is flaky to precisely the right/wrong degree, itunes will see the ipod, but misidentify it as an earlier version of ipod.
tracking down the cause of the flakiness can be tricky ... as you already know ...
just checking. have you tried connecting with a different (known-good) USB cable? does that seem to have any impact on the rate of occurence of the problem?

Have an ipod touch 2g, but can't upgrade to ios 4.2.1

I have an ipod touch 2g which is on ios 2.2.1 iTunes says this is the current version, but I know I can update to 4.2.1 I have tried contacting Apple help, but they have just referred me to articles that tell me to update via iTunes!!

Well you can upgrade an 1G iPod too. But only to 3.1.3 and not to 4.2.1.
But you have to pay for the upgrade. Then you download it with iTunes to your iPod just like downloading a song.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

I have a ipod touch gen 2 and I am trying to get airplay to work with my pioneer Elite VSX receiver.

I have a gen 2 IPOD touch with the current operating system (4.2.1). As well I have a Pioneer A/V Elite series VSX 52 that is airplay ready. On my ipod touch there is no airplay icon(s) with the music feature. I am trying to make this work but have no results. If there is a download that I need to enable to have this function work.

There are no setting on the iPod. Unlike the iPad wich morrors the iPad display, TV out on an iPod only displays TV out on apps that support TV out. The Video app is one such app.
Is that you problem?

- Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

I cannot update iTunes. In instructions for updating it says to go to help and then click check for updates. Guess what! No help options within iTunes. I need to be able to syn my iPod touch 5 but I cant without the newest iTunes. I am sick of this crap.

I am EXTREMELY tired of having to deal with this. iTunes has been an issue since I got it and unfortunately whenever I want to update my computer's iTunes account it demands I download a new format (which has continually gotten worse and WORSE over time). I wish things would not be updated so frequently. As soon as I have the new format working decently (ONLY decently, I have never had an apple product that has worked as it is stated it should) another update comes along. Okay - let's cut to the chase...
If the Menu Bar (File, Edit... Help) shown in my screenshot below is not visible, use CTRL+B to display it. Then click on Help/Check for Updates. If one is available, you will be able to select it at this time.
Note the item at the bottom of the list; About iTunes. Selecting that will show you which version of iTunes you are using.
An alternative method to display the Menu Bar is click on the box in the top left of your iTunes window...
