I have 2 external hard drives. 1 works on every computer including mine.  Another works on every computer except mine.  My computer is a mbp mid-2010 running snow leopard.  The other computers are windows 7 and a 2012 mbp running mountain lion.

The drive  had been working on my mbp until recently.  Now, it does not even show up in disk utility.
The problem began when I changed the drive to GPT with Paragon's Partition Manager.  After this problemn occurred, I used Paragon Partition Manager to change it back to MBR.  However, disk utility still does not recognize the drive on my mbp.
Thank you in advance for any insights.

I never mentioned creating another account....
Check the formatting on the HD that wont mount on your MBP,  its likely formatted in MSDOS.

I have a Seagate Slim Portable 500 GB USB 3.0 external hard drive that worked great with my Macbook Pro 13" Retina but gets ejected and won't show files on any iMac. My Macbook Pro and the two different iMacs I tried it on were all using Mountain Lion, so the only difference was the iMac versus Macbook Pro.

I just tried this, no luck...
I connected a different USB cable, still the same problem. Tried both cables with the problematic hard drive on two different computers, still the same problem.
At this point I assume I'll probably need professional help in saving the files, thanks for the assistance.

  • I have an external hard drive and want to know how to transfer files to my new lap top Window 7

I have an external hard drive and I want to transfer my i-tune files to my new laptop....Anyone done this? What must I do?Thanks

These are two possible approaches that should work.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.

Repartition and format the drive for a Mac:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • I have two separate iTunes libraries on two separate Computers. I need to consolidate them so I can play them on a brand new computer. How do I do this so I can play them off an External Hard Drive on my brand new computer?

I have two separate iTunes libraries on two separate Computers. I need to consolidate them so I can play them on my brand new computer. How do I do this so I can play them off an External Hard Drive on my brand new computer?

Why, if it told you you have insufficient space on your computer, would it suggest making more space available on your phone?
At a guess, you have insufficient space on your phone. Installing software will typically require more space than the final size of the software, perhaps even twice or three times as much, for the installation process. You can easily dump some videos or music temporarily, and then synch them back in afterwards.

I am able to see the drive in disk utility and under system info USB. But I am unable to access the data and it does not show on the desktop when connected.

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.
Pondini has a lot of stuff about getting access to the sparsebundle.
    http://pondini.org/TM/17.html
But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

  • LR is not able to pull up my photos. I have checked and the external hard drive is working but none of the thousands of photos are showing up. What can I do to get LR to recognize and pull up my photos.

LR is not abel to pull up my photos. There is the explanation mark on all the photos meaning that LR can not find them. The external hard drive is working. I have even changed the usb cord to see if that was the problem. I have been able to pull up the photos individually off of the  external hard drive so that is working.

Yes, yes, yes! I do recall that I changed the drive letter but it did not register on the Finder so I had forgotten about it. Now it works and LR is now able to read the drive. Thank you sooooooo much. BTW, dealing with Adobe on this product is exceptionally frustrating since you can't talk to a human being on the phone. Rick, Can't thank you enough for pointing me in the right direction.

I have an external hard drive, from Iomega. that I can open and see my files. However, I cannot copy or save any file to it. On my PC I have it says that is possible to read and write in it, but in my Mac, it says I can only read. can somebody help me?
Also, Im a photographer, so I like to name a lot of files at the same time (used to do in on PC and it was very usefull.) cannot find out how to do it on my Mac. Really appretiate if some one can give me a solution! Thanx

Your drive is formatted with the NTFS file system.  OS X can read but not write to the NTFS file system.  There are third party drivers available that claim to add the ability to OS X to write to an NTFS partition.  I have not tried them and don't know if they work.
The only file system that OS X and Windows can both write to natively is the FAT32 file system.

  • Western Digital external hard drive not working properly

I have this external hard drive from western digital, 2 TB space, in wich i stored data from a windows machine.
Now i moved to an arch machine (the one i have at home) and it doesn't mount the hard drive.
I tried as normal user and as root, i tried just
    mount /dev/sdc1
and most of the variants (-t filesystem, -o force and so on)
the first one obviously didn't work, the device is'n in my fstab file, but it's not my problem.
here i post the output of "fdisk -l /dev/sdc":
    sudo fdisk -l /dev/sdc
    [sudo] password for pertica:
    Disk /dev/sdc: 1,8 TiB, 2000396746752 bytes, 3907024896 sectors
    Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disklabel type: dos
    Disk identifier: 0x0002de0f
Dispositivo Avvio Start Fine Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdc1 2048 3907029167 1953513560 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
so, my problem isn't the filesystem (i think it is NTFS, but i'm not so sure after all), also.
I tried then to open /dev/sdc (the hard drive) with gparted, and it does not recognise any partition
(the only thing it says is, translated from italian: "it is not possible to have a partition out of the disk")
At first, i belived it could be something to be solved by "fsck", but it didn't seem to help.
Then, i checked more carefully the output of "fdisk -l /dev/sdc", and i found out that the end of the partition
sdc1 ("Fine" in italian) was at sector 3907029167 while the disk has only 3907024896.
Now, how can i fix this? (possibly without erasing the whole disk?)

  • External Hard drive was working, now "Original Item..Can't be found"

I have a Air Port Extreme and an iMac and two Laptops in my Household. We also have a External Hardrive connected to the Extreme that we can all access. However one of the Laps tops suddenly stopped accessing the hard drive. It is listed in the Finder, but when we click on it it gives us the following message..."The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “PASSPORT” can’t be found." (Passport being the name of the Hardrive). Any ideas what is happening here? The other computers are working just fine.

Well maybe you can directly connect to that hard drive and use /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility on it and see if can do the Repairs on that disk. The hard disk might be going a little or get a bad block so Disk Utility might be able to repair it.

  • I have an external hard drive but it is read only on my macbook.

I have an external hard drive but it is read only on my macbook. I have tried my friends which works on his macbook but this is also read only on mine. Do I need to change any settings?

Here's my lo-tech solution (if you have Parallels) to this frustrating problem:
    Eject your hard drive.
Unplug (USB) your hard drive from the MAC .
    Start Parallels.
When Windows has started, plug your drive back into the MAC.
You should get a little screen asking if you want the drive to be utilized by MAC or Windows. Select Windows.
Use Windows to copy your files over to the hard drive.
This is less than ideal and not a long-term solution, but I was afraid of attempting any reformatting since I have many files on my hard drive.
Just remember that Windows has to be running first, before you plug in your hard drive.

  • Problems getting an external hard drive to work on the new Airport Extreme

I have spent hours trying to get my 320GB external hard drive to work with the new airport extreme 802.11N. I have spent hours pouring over all of the posts here discussing possible solutions, all of which have not worked. This morning, however, I gave it another try and FINALLY, I have it working. I tried something simple. Here it is:
Using the Apple Disk Utility Program, I formated my drive using the MS-DOS mode, called my Hard drive "ItunesHD". It took about 20 minutes to complete (i'm assuming because of the size of the drive). I then unplugged the router and hard drive, turned on the hard drive, then the router. After my macbook pro reconnected, I clicked on the iDisk utility icon in my menu bar, provided my password and FINALLY saw the network drive icon on my desktop!!! It seems that formatting my drive using MS-DOS compatibility mode finally worked for me. I'm not saying this will work for anyone else who is having this problem, but you can at least try it. I tried all of the MAC formatting options and have had no luck.
What I would like to know now is (..if anyone has these answers, please let me know):
    1. What is the maximum SINGLE drive capacity that this router will understand...500GB, 1TB, 2TB? I would like to get the biggest bang for my buck.
    2. Keeping #1 one in mind, I purchased an Apple TV (still waiting on it to arrive) and I would like to know if it will read multiple hard drives connected to the Airport Extreme router (...say (2) 500GB hard drives). I know you can have multiple libraries in iTunes (which to me is a cheesy solutions, there should be an option in the preferences that would allow you to save your music in one place and your movies in another). Anybody have any idea on this one?
I basically want to rip all of my dvd movies on a big hard drive connected to my airport extreme to use with my AppleTV , so I just need to find out about the maximum size and hooking up more than one hard drive and getting the AppleTV to recognize them all.
    thnks
MacBook Pro Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sorry you had so much trouble hooking up a hard drive to the base station. I've done some experimenting with the feature and this is what I've found out.
You can use either the native Mac format, Mac OS Extended, or the Microsoft format known as FAT. Apple calls FAT, MS-DOS File System in Disk Utility.
If you use Mac OS Extended, the Macs on the network will be able to connect to the drive using the native AFP (Apple File Protocol) or the Microsoft native SMB (Server Message Block) protocol. PCs will only use the SMB protocol of course.
If you use MS-DOS File System both the Macs and the PCs will only use SMB to connect to the drive over the network.
Basically I've found everything works as expected with regard to volumes connected to a network.
One thing I don't have installed is the iDisk Utility. I'm wondering if it may be the cause of the problems you were having. But reading through your post it may also be the difference between expected behaviour and the proper procedure for discovering and mounting network volumes. Let me explain.
You only mention having trouble getting the drive to show up on your Desktop, you didn't describe how you went about discovering the network drive. It isn't just suppose to show up on your desktop when you plug it in to the Extreme base station. It doesn't work like the iDisk or disks connected directly to your computer using USB/Firewire.
Normally with network drives you're suppose to either browse for them using the Network icon in the Finder or using the Connect to Server command in the Finder's Go menu, you would type the address in directly for the network volume you want to mount. Try it and see what happens.
Now to answer your other questions.
I don't have a volume large enough to hit any limits the base station may have but I did read a post about someone who said they had a 1.5 TB volume connected and could only see 1 TB of it. They were forced to partition the drive to see all available space and of course the volumes showed up as two separate drives. One thing wasn't made clear though. They didn't say what volume format they were using to format the drive, Mac OS Extended or MS-DOS.
Everything having to do with the AppleTV is just speculation at this point since no one has one yet but from what has been demonstrated so far, AppleTV relies on iTunes. In other words, it won't pull data from network volumes on its own, a computer running iTunes needs to feed it.

  • External hard drive stopped working on Mac after attempt to connect it to a PC

I have an external hard drive that is new and has been working beautifully.  It is formatted for a Mac.  Forgetting this, I tried to plug it into a PC. Of course it didn't work, but now when I try to plug it into my Mac it doesn't mount. How can I fix it?

Try repairing it, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.

  • My drive collapsed. I have an external hard drive. How can I put all my files there, using disk utility?

So my MacBook Pro collapsed one day, and it turns on but only "Restarts" and shuts itself down on the procesa. The only thing I have access to is that 'Command + R' thing. There I tried "Verifying" and "Reparing" the Diak but the message of "Cant repair disk backup as many files as possible, reformat the disk and restore" popped up. So I have am external hard drive with more than enough space to put all of my files in there. my question is: HOW DO I DO THAT? from disk utility. Can somone please help me? Please! Step by step cause ptherwise I will mess it up and I really dont want to lose all the memories I have in my computer.

After you restart so you have access to Disk Utility, with the external drive connected, choose the external drive from the left sidebar of the DU window.  If the drive has not been formatted for the Mac, choose Partition from the buttons top center of the main window.  Give the drive a name, you can leave it as one partition if you like, make sure the format is set as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and the partition table is GUID.  Then Apply and acknowledge that you know this will erase the disk.
Then go to the button that says Restore.  Drag and drop the internal drive, Macintosh HD is most common, to the Source box, and drag and drop the external drive to Destination box.  Then Restore.
That will create a clone of the internal and that will be a bootable clone.
