I have a mid/late-2007 MacBook Pro 3.1 with 6 Gigs of RAM and a 750 Gig 7200rpm hybrid hard drive that is running Mountain Lion just fine. Performance benchmarks with Geekbench are equal between SL and ML, and the Mac runs about 20 F degrees cooler than it did with SL.
You took extremely good care of your almost 7 year old machine and judiciously used it, you added more RAM and a faster cooler hybrid drive to make up for the more feature rich yet slower performing Mountain Lion.
Congratulations, your a conservative.
It would be nice to have some empathy for the people you advise that they also also don't get suddenly ambused by a OS X upgrade that's going to disable software they care about using still.

Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system. -

Anyone knows how to fix this problem?It's hard to say why your machine is slow, but that machine with 8 GB of RAM should not be slow. Could be any number of possible problems. Insert it, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the drive, and install the OS. If you're going to be selling or giving away the computer, securely delete all the files which may contain sensitive data first, and include the disk with it.

I am running version 10.7.5 on my MacBook Pro. can I upgrade directly to Mavericks or do I have to upgrade to Mountain Lion first, then Mavericks?
As long as your MacBook Pro is in the ML compatible list, http://www.apple.com/osx/specs it is compatible with Mavericks and you can go directly to Mavericks.

You will need to call Apple as it is no longer listed in the app store. After paying for it, they will send you a redemption code via email you can use to download it.

I had Leopard on may Mac. I upgraded to Mountain Lion using Snow Leopard. I can't use my video with Mountain Lion. Can I load Snow Leopard on an external hard drive so I can use it with my camera?
First, you cannot do this if you have a Boot Camp partition.
Second: Create a new partition.
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed. (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss. Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
Third: Install Snow Leopard.
Boot from your Snow Leopard DVD. Follow instructions for installation being sure that before you actually install Snow Leopard you have selected the new partition as your target destination.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo
appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading. -
How can I obtain the Pages app which I previously purchased from the App store for Snow Leopard? The only download now available is for Mountain Lion which my computer can't run. Thanks
Try Amazon but look for the iWork suite of software. It's only sold separately as Pages, Keynote, and Numbers from the App Store.

Snow Leopard client for NetRestore image not being recognized in Mountain Lion Server
I target firewired a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and ran System Imaging Utility and the machine does not show up as an option. Does Mountain Lion Server support Snow Leopard NetRestore images or am I doing something wrong?
I'm actually trying to figure that out as well. We have 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8 Images we wanted to put together for our netrestore images on our server, but can only do 10.8 images currently.
We also have the AppleCare Helpdesk diagnostic kit which includes hardware tests, we were only able to get the newer mid-2012 and late-2012 Diagnostic utilities to netboot but none of the older ones.
So do we need a server running the older OS to get these or is there a better alternative? i mean really shouldnt be a problem considering theyre running inside of an image and dont rely heavily on the server resources other than to say "Yep, goto this file/directory".
I'd like to know more as well.... -
Need to get a second hand black MacBook connected. Poor reception on Airport so tried a plug in wifi aerial. That didn't work, but now have a Network Location I can't get rid of. How do I remove it ?

I tried what you suggested - but to no success. The problem came up when I was re-entering the new settings. If I left it as using DHCP it would run for a few seconds with no IP address, then drop in a 169.254 one which would not connect through. To overcome this I tried using the 'Using DHCP with manual address' option and entered in an address which it had set up from the clone boot. This appeared to be okay. When I then tried renewing DHCP lease sometimes that address held. When I tried connecting though - no sight of the internet, and the exclamation mark was across the wifi icon in the menu bar. If I switched it to Using DHCP it would randomly fall back to the 169.254 address.
The only significant differences I could see when cross checking all the settings info was in the WINS panel the NetBIOS had a slightly different configuration of the name - but as they ended in the same numbers I assumed they were the same. And, when looking under Keychain Access, in the System section list (it also appeared in the login section) additional info box they had different locations - 28 characters in four groups. I don't have a clue what this refers to. Also the allow access list in the boot clone included System Preferences, but did not in the Snow Leopard boot, so I added it in. With no success.
I am so frustrated I am thinking of giving up. I seen have loads of postings on the net about a variety of problems with wifi connection on Snow Leopard. I have version 10.6.3. Did it get any better in later Snow Leopard ? Or in any of the OS s after that ? It was always so easy and so solid under Leopard - why the h**l did they change it ? -

The software is supposed to come with the time-capsule, but I can not find it, also I checked with a friend who just bought an airport extreme and he can't find any software. Open the Mac App Store and download Yosemite. If you don't want to upgrade all the way, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7; the online Apple Store also sells download codes for Mountain Lion 10.8.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

How to revert mid 2010 macbook pro to snow leopard
I have a mid 2010 15" macbook pro which I want to sell. It is currently running Mavericks. It has a self-installed 1T disk upgrade.
I believe it came with Leopard but I can't seem to find those os/x disks. I do have the Snow Leopard disks which I purchased for an upgrade. I want to install Snow Leopard on this macbook pro after running disk utility to unpartitiion the drive and format for a new install. I know I've done this before but believe it was on older equipment which did not have an os/x which used a recovery partition.
When I boot from the cd and hold down the C key I get a shaded bar of progress and eventually the boot process stops with a gray screen containing an apple logo. It gets no further. What am I doing wrong or is there something in Mavericks which is preventing me from booting from the snow leopard disk? (Alternatively I have another macbook pro so maybe I can do what I want using target disk mode however I've not done this before.)

To get back to it's original state and remove Mavericks so I can sell it.......
I tried updating to 10.6 using update disks I had purchased not realizing these were for an older iMac I no longer had. It turned out that the 2010 macbook pro came with a newer version 10.6.8 already installed thus the disks which shipped with the mbp were newer. In it's infinite wisdom os/x would not downgrade itself!
Once I got the right disks (they were right in the box where I left them) I was able to boot from the cd, run disk utililty, unpartition the drive, format the drive, and install sl. Problem solved.
Banging head on desk. I'm now headed out to the woodshed to give myself a thrashing.
