I have a 500 gb hard drive partitioned for files and time machine but when i connect it to my mac only the time machine one shows up
well as the title says i have a 500gb hard drive with 2 partitions one with time machine and one for files it worked perefectly until yesterday only the time machine partition appeared in finder, i checked disk utility and both partitions appeared but the one for files appeared in grey and when i press mount an error comes up.
The repair shop likely replaced a major circuit board on your MacBook Pro, so Time Machine thinks that you have a "new" computer and it wants to make a new complete backup of your Mac.
You are going to have to make a decision to either add another new Time Capsule....or USB drive to your existing Time Capsule....and in effect start over with a new backup of your Mac and then move forward again.
For "most" users, I think this is probably the best plan because you preserve all your old backups in case you need them at some point, and you start over again with a new Time Capsule so you have plenty of room for years of new backups.
Or, as you have mentioned, you have the option of erasing the Time Capsule drive and starting all over again. The upside is that you start over and have plenty of room for new backups. The downside is that you lose years of backups.
Another option....trying to manually delete old backups individually....is tricky business....and very time consuming. To get an idea of what is involved here, study this FAQ by Pondini, our resident Time Capsule and Time Machine expert on the Community Support area. In particular, study the pink box.

Once you look through this, I think you may agree that this type of surgery is not for the faint of heart. I would suggest that you consider this only if one of the other options just cannot work for you.

I just purchased a MB Air 13", as well as a Seagate Slim Backup Plus. I have an older external hard drive that I was using with a Dell laptop. I would like to get the files off of the older external hard drive, and onto the new Seagate drive. Is this possible? I'd also like to be able to add files going forward to the Seagate from either a PC or a Mac and be able to view/use them on the MB Air 13".
Thanks in advance.You will have to format the Seagate external HDD to a format common to both Mac and PC such as ExFAT. That should allow you to transfer files from the old HDD and still allow you to use with your MBA.

Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?
Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

This is a problem with the Mac OS X implementation of exFAT. I've had the same problem.
Best is to use a Windows box to format the drive exFAT. Then it can be read by both Windows and Mac OS.
But aren't Macs supposed to "Just Work"? Not in this case. -
After an install of Lion, my secondary internal hard drive used for backup and time machine is not showing on the desktop. Cannot be located with Disk Utility either. Contains vital files! please help...

I have 100 songs on i pod touch. But when i connect it to itunes it only showed 44 songs. What is actually happening and how to fix the problem so that all music in my iphone can be seen in my itune
If they are iTunes purchased music then go to Settings>iTunes and App Store and turn off Show All.
Next

External Hard Drive Partition, Erased Files. HELPPPP!
Something went wrong and has now "erased" all my files on my external hard drive (used for backing up with TM), after adding a partition second partition. I did not install anything onto the newly created partition as my focus was then distracted by the fact that all my data had now been erased.

I wanted to boot Snow Leopard from my external hard drive. So I used Disk Utility to add a partition on my external hard drive (clicking the + sign). The drive had around 264 GB (shaded in blue), with approximately 34GB free. So I type the newly desired partition of 8GB. Disk Utility was saying explicitly that "this partition will not be erased", referring to the original partition of 264GB that will become approximately 272GB, the one that contains all my files. I say to myself, okay, that is safe as it is telling me my files will not be erased.
With the partitions split and my original data of 264GB still shaded in blue, I click apply.
A box prompts me to confirm partition, reading:
"Partitioning this disk will change some of the partitions. No partitions will be erased"
This partition will be added:
"Snow Leopard HD"
This Partition will be resized:
"My Passport"
So obviously I confirm and click Partition...
It took about 30 seconds or under to partition and then I noticed my original partition was no longer shaded in blue but was completely empty
I open my external hard drive in Finder and none of my files are visible.
I open Time Machine and it is not displaying any of my back ups and will no longer back up. Its says Latest Backup: Failed i
So I click on the i button and it says:
Time Machine Error
The backup volume could not be found.
At this point I am panicking! I followed every step correctly and it clearly stated no files would be erased.
What has happened here? and how can I retrieve my lost files?

my Mac is telling me that my disk is full. I have bought an external hard drive and watched a youtube tutorial on moving iTunes library to external hard drive. Will I still be able to use iTunes on my Mac for new media or will this now only work through my external hard drive?
To do this you need to learn the details of how iTunes works. For example, you just said, "leave my iTunes on my computer". iTunes is the application itself so of course it has to be on your computer. That said, I therefore don't know what you mean when you say leave iTunes on your computer. The phrasing of your question suggests to me, if I may be frank, you don't understand how iTunes works fully and we can't just give you a "do this" answer and have it work out. It would be too easy to make a mess of things.

Yes, you can download media and delete it again (but if it is from the iTunes Store there is the possibility you can't always download it again). Of course if you want to keep a copy you can archive it. I have done that with some files for which I have no room on my computer. I transfer them to an external hard drive and delete the reference to the file (but not the file itself) from my library. If I want a quick listen I go to the file on the drive and use Quicktime player or something else non-iTunes so I don't have to have it added to iTunes and delete again. I don't know if that is the solution you are looking for. I could leave the reference in iTunes but if the file can't be located by iTunes it will tell me there is a broken link = ! I guess I could live with that except I periodically scan my library for broken links and don't want it getting confused with ones I have done deliberately and ones suggesting I am really missing a file somewhere.
Another possibility is to make a second iTunes library for material you are archiving and only use that library when the computer is using the external drive. There are tricky aspects to dong that but it is a possibility too.
The simple solution for most people with computers with tiny drives (as most seem to be these days) is to put their whole iTunes library on an external drive and use it from there. -

Launch iTunes with the Option key held down and create a new library on that drive, or play them through the QuickTime Player instead of iTunes.

Since having my MacBook Pro repaired (for a video problem) Time Capsule returns the following message: "This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 428.08 GB but only 192.14 GB are available."
I notice that there is also a new sparse bundle.
Since TC has my ONLY backup (going back about 4 years) I am reluctant to wipe it and start over fresh as I am afraid of losing files.
Is there a way of dealing with this?

External Hard drive partitioning for Windows
Hi I have a MacBook Pro and I am trying to download Windows via a Seagate 1 TB external Hard Drive. I have already used this external hard drive for backups and have it partitioned as an MSDOS with 500 GB and OSEJ also with 500 GB. When I use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 8 it says I need a single drive as FAT partition. How do I keep the memory on my OSEJ while still installing Windows 8. Thank you!
JohnI don't know what OSEF is, but as far as Boot Camp is concerned only two partitions may exist - the original OS X partition and the Windows partition made by Boot Camp.
I don't know what you are downloading to the external drive. If it is the Windows drivers for Windows on Boot Camp then those you can put on an external drive. But the driver disk can only be used after Windows has been installed and running. -
Hard drive partition device files not consistent between reboots
For a reason I'm not completely certain of, the Hardware Abstraction Layer is causing my partition file descriptors to be different between bootups - causing a plethora of fstab-related issues.
I have two hard drives in my computer, the primary one according to the bios being where GRUB and Arch are installed to. Ironically, when it works, this drive is given "sdb." /etc/fstab is written to mount the partitions on sdb.
The secondary hard drive has Windows 7 installed to it. This drive, when Arch Linux boots up properly, is considered "sda."
However, half the time since enabling the HAL daemon, sda can become sdb and vice versa - causing partition mounting to screw up, naturally.
I'll also note that attempting to mount sda2 (windows 7) in fstab causes the Arch drive to always be sda. Rather frustrating, seeing as how I use symlinks to the Windows 7 user folders in my Arch user folders (Documents, Pictures, etc).

Hard drive partitioning for photographers 101
I have a Mac pro with the 250 Gb HD that it came with and I just bought another apple 500 Gb HD because the first was getting full. I also have an external LaCie 250. I don't know anything about partitioning, scratch disk mumbo jumbo. I am a photographer who uses Aperture and Photoshop CS3 daily. I have 4Gb of RAM and a dual 2.66hz processor.
In your experience what is a good way for me to partition/format these HDs so that these two applications run their best and have room for a huge Aperture library? Please keep it simple because all the forums I looked at were beyond my head.Throw 3-4 500GB or even 750GB drives in and don't partition anything.
One for scratch, one for data, one for system, and your current drive gets cloned to a new drive (that makes it your backup).

If you call it mumbo-jumbo (vs "it's all gReeK to me!") it sort of says you are sour on those that do and are forced to learn how our "cars" run and the type of gas it takes. I've always liked to know why the sky is blue, or how things work.
It depends on the size of your files, amount of work, number of layers, and the cost of performance.

External hard drive partition for Time Machine wont mount
I have an external HD that I've partitioned half for Time Machine, and half for external storage. Today the Time Machine partition wouldn't show up on the desktop. I checked Disk Utility and it recognizes both partitions, but the Time Machine partition is greyed out. When I selected it, in the stat list at the bottom it said "Mount Point: Not Mounted." I then clicked on "Mount" at the top, and after a bit a popup told me it couldn't mount and I should attempt to repar the disk. So I clicked "Repair Disk," and after a while, I finally got the message "Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
Why is only one partition affected? Can I reformat one petition but leave the other untouched? Are there any other options before I do this?
One other item that is probably related: I've been having an issue with a flash drive that seems to constantly unmount itself, giving me "error, disk ejected improperly" messages. Earlier today I believe I had the same thing with my external HD.Why is only one partition affected?
The drive malfunction that caused the problem only affected that partition.

This is not an option, it's mandatory: start a new backup on another drive. The one you have has lost data once already. If it were mine, it would be in the recycling bin now. You need more than one backup to be safe anyway. Apparently you have no backups at all of the data on the other partition. That means you're going to lose that data, sooner or later.
