I have a Imac 8,1 that wont boot.
3.06Ghz, Nvidia 8800
I believe i have 2 problems.
First this is what ive already done:
I ran an extensive hardware test, no problem
In disk utility I erased my harddrive and clean installed Mavericks,
Verified and repaired disk, no problems
Verified and repaired permissions, no problems
Disk boots up fine when running on MacBookPro through Firewire
Zapped PRAM/NVRAM plenty
After upgrade I can no longer boot into safe mode, Stalls after 25%
Can no longer use CMD-R
Can no longer use Apple Hardware Test
Doesnt seem like I can update firmware from disk by holding down the power button. not sure im using the right disk either.
These problems probably stem from running complex graphics on a windows 7 partitions I used to have.
     First off I think my GPU is out. I get Thick Green lines down the screen that are not from screen damage straight from startup.
After Chime the apple logo pops up and loads but after a while the wheel stops and the computer will reboot moments after. Im hoping this is a Firmware problem and I dont have to replace my GPU. My computer has booted up with the lines before and I dont think its the cause for not booting but im no professional. Before I updated to Mavericks This Problem already existed. Can a failing GPU cause boots to fail?
     During hardware test the green lines would go away and I would have a clean screen.
I loaded Mavericks from a USB drive from there onto the newly erased harddrive (32 Write erase). Everything was going great until I got close to the end of the loading bar for the setup and it froze. The colors on my screen displayed everything but with the colors messed up into a rainbow oval on the top half of the screen. I rebooted and suddenly I cant boot from anything. Harddrive, Install Disk, or USB
     So I plugged up my firewire and got on a MacBookPro with Mavericks and erased the disk again. Then I installed Mavericks flawlessly and it will boot from the MacBookPro but not from the Imac.
When I boot in Verbose mode I get an error that says
BootCacheControl: Unable to open /var/db/BootCache.playlist:2 no such file or directory
Then
NVDAStartup: Official (im guessing thats my GPU)
and a bunch of SMC:smcReadKeyAction ERRORS
and Sandbox: authd(##) deny file-write & deny file-read errors
Im thinking I need a new GPU but I want to be absolutely certain before I spend anything on replacing parts.
Could this be a EFI Firmware Problem?
like a Firmware/boot data problem from a bad ESP (I dont know what is what really).
If all this is part of the GPU it would totally make sense to just go ahead and replace it if thats the case. But im no expert, What do you think?

Very simple take it to an Apple Store or AASP and have it professionally diagnosed. Anything else would be guessing. Do NOT spend a penny on it until it is professionaly diagnosed otherwise you stand and excellent chance of throwing good money after bad.

I have a IMac G5 A1058 that was running Mac OS 10.3.8 I upgraded to 10.4, shortly after upgrading the system would no longer boot so I booted from the 10.4 Tiger upgrade disk from which I had upgraded and disk utility found errors on the HD file system that it said could not be repaired. I removed the HD from the system and connected it to my other IMac G5 A1312and ran disk utility and found the same errros. I re partitioned the HD put it back into the G5 and atempted to reinstall the OS. I keep getting a grey screen with a circle and a line through it.It does this with OS 10.2 and 10.3 when I tried 10.4 tiger upgrade it says it need their to be a system all ready installed. My Q's is do I need Mac OS 10.3.8 disks since that is the system that this computer was released with?
Any idea why it will not let me install 10.3 and work my way up?

Boot the ssystem from the OS DVD. Once it is booted run Disk Utiltiy. Select OS Extrended (Journled)

Just power off the machine(s). Shut them down. Migration Assistant gets 'stuck' sometimes - best way to migrate really isn't over Firewire, though it will certainly work, but with both machines hardwired via Ethernet to the same router. You can use a TM backup, too, of course, provided that it's recent. Which is the best? Your choice. I've done it both ways and have a preference for MA, but TM restore can be a bit faster and less quarrelsome.

The profile on the MAC server has been deleted and the iPad has been erased and reset to default. I need to be able to get Configurator to recognize this device to prepare it for deployment and issue Apps to it. Please help!!

Run the application 'Terminal.app' which you will find in '/Applications/Utilities' on your Macintosh.
Type this into it: defaults delete com.apple.configurator PreprationSavedPolicyDefaultsKey
Hit the return key.
If you get no error message, it worked, and you can quit the app.

Forgotten Restrictions Passcode Help
You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.

Redownload the purchases. Go to itunes and open the itunes store. On the right you will see some links, one will say "Purchased" with a "New" icon next to it. sign in and you can download all the songs again

What OS were you using on the mini before this problem started? If 10.7.8.9, boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions. Then reinstall the OS.

Is there a way to transfer files from a hard drive that wont boot up?

my hard drive wont boot up. even when i try to reinstall it says that it cant be reinstalled on the drive, is there a way to get the files off before i wipe it clean? (assuming i can even do that)

If the MacBook has a Firewire port then you could connect it to another Mac with Firewire and use Target Disk Mode to access the drive and transfer files assuming the drive is accessible. Or if you don't have Firewire ports then you can remove the drive, install it in an external enclosure, connect it to another Mac and transfer data if the drive is accessible.
If neither of the above are feasible then you can try using recovery software. Recovery software comes on bootable discs, but you will need an external drive to which the recovered files can be saved.
General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

Unauthourize a computer that wont boot a certain os anymore, but multiboots

uh dunno where to start, this is a wierd question, and please no one say "contact apple, ask them to deauthorise" or "when you have 5, you can deauthroize all" i know all that, ive done both of those this year, and i dont plan to try again.
ok, i have a multibooting computer, xp,vista,7, and i authorized win7, later on something happened, and now win7 wont boot, it keeps going into startup repair loops, so i plan to format it, but my question is, is there a folder that i can copy, with the auth info in it, that i can copy back to the fresh win7, because its the same hardware, it will accept it, i just dont know where that folder is, obviously i can access any file on the win7 because i can see the hdd from xp and vista, so can anybody help me here?

It's in ProgramData\Apple Computer\iTunes on that HD. Note that changing the OS configuration may cause its existing authorization to be ignored.

Can you clone a failing hardrive or a hardrive that wont boot up?

My macbook pro gave me the grey screen with the loading cogwheel earlier this week. I tried all of the fixes with the forums but was unsuccessful. I took it in to genius and they told me that the hard drive was failing. I was able to recover the majority of my important items onto my external hardrive. I was wondering if you can clone a hard drive that is failing? Keep in mind that my macbook wont boot up on its own.

It's highly unlikely that a single corrupt file is responsible for a problem with to the drive's hardware. If the file's just causing Mac OS X to fail to boot, cloning the drive and using it as a non-boot volume won't transfer the problem.

my iphone4 was workiing fine till i tried to upgrade to os7. The upgrade stopped because i didnt have enough juice and i just had lost my charger. Right after that i noticed the home button wasnt working right so i turned the phone off and attempted to tuurn it back on but nothing happened and i know i had like 20% of battery life left when i turned it off. i searched on the internet and found out i probably had to restore it. so i got it to go into recovery mode and connected it to my computer and itunes. itunes recognized the device said i had to restore it so i clicked the button. It started to do whatever it does but out of nowhere error 21 pops up.i also noticed that right before the error 21 message came up the phone did try to come on(apple came up) but then it cut right back off and repeated that over and over....i need self-help solutions because i dnt have warranty or $85 to send it in because i just paid $100. can i get it jailbroken even though it wont turn on? will that fix it? thank you for taking the time to read this even if you dont have an answer. We don't discuss jailbreaking in this Apple hosted forum, and in any case, it's never recommended. Have you tried this:
Turn your phone off and connect your cable to the computer, but not the device just yet. Start up iTunes. Now, hold down the home button on your phone and plug it in to the cable - don't let go of the button until iTunes tells you it's detected a phone in recovery mode. Now you can restore to factory settings.

I have an iMac with Mavericks that is experiencing a lot of "spinning balls" from particularly Mail, Google Chrome, and Word. I took it to the Apple store and it was fast there, at home slow. I have been having internet speed issues, could it be that?

I have a pretty new iMac with LOTS of storage (about 4TB with externals) that is experiencing a lot of "spinning balls of death" from time to time in almost any program that I might have open, but particularly MacMail, Google Chrome browsers, and Word. I took it to the Apple store to be checked out and it was really fast with no issues there. I brought it home and it was better at first but then it started happening again.
I have been having a lot of issues with Time Warner where my download speeds will dip really low, and all I can think of is that MacMail goes and tries to check for email and can't get out to the internet and it locks all the other resources up while it is doing it. It will also take a REALLY long time to even let you look at mail. The folder size is over 13GB (down from 22GB that I just cleared out from - I have a lot of MP3s etc in there) and I will try to get this down to under 10GB which might help, and the mail is on an external drive. I have been told that Verizon is not a shared network but a direct connection to their server, and if I can't fix this then I will try switching to them. If anyone has any direct knowledge on this stuff, I am all ears.

Hi, I have an iMac running Mavericks that I am trying to hook up an older HDTV as a second HD monitor through the minidisplay port to component 3 color RCA. HDMI is not an option with this set. I have SD working, but need to find a HD conversion set up.

Presently I have a mini display port>VGA adaptor, running to a convertor box I picked up that handles S-video out, which is working fine for SD. I also have a VGA to Component Video (5 wire RCA) adaptor cable. Connecting Component adaptor dircetly to the mini display adaptor doesn't seem to work, neither does plugging it into a VGA port on the SD convertor box. I am guessing there is another convertor box out there that will help me make the transition from mini display to Component. Even if it means having a handful of adaptors plugged in. does anyone know where to find such a wonderful and magical device?

Your setup works fine for DV, because you used a DV deck and most likely DV footage. But now you are working with 720p HD footage (what format, BTW? HDV, dvcpro HD?). That same setup won't work for monitoring HD. Now you need an HD box or card to send out a proper HD signal. And since you have an older G5, you won't find any current solutions. You'll have to look at used capture cards that are PCIx. Or you and look at the Matrox MXO, that connects to the computer via a monitor connection. DVI.
