Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART
info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files.

Have you purchased OS X Lion? If so, check that it's not hidden in your Apple ID, so unhide it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US Finally, you will be able to reinstall Lion.
If you want to go back to Snow Leopard, your Mac should have come with DVDs or a USB drive. If your computer came with a USB drive, just insert the USB drive, hold the Option (Alt) key while your computer is starting, choose the USB drive and reinstall Snow Leopard. You may have to erase the hard drive before installing it.
If your Mac came with DVDs, you need an external optical drive or another PC or Mac to use Remote Install Mac OS X -
I just upgraded to Lion and want to go back to Snow Leopard ..I have time machine..is there a way?
I just upgraded to Lion and Quicken will not work and not sure if I want to go back to Snow Leopard. I have a timemachine and would like to know if someone could help to either get quicken working or how I can get back to snow leopard?
Did you check the Quicken website before upgrading your Mac? It specifically says that Quicken will not work on Lion.

Just reinstall Snow Leopard. Should work fine. You can downgrade to previous software as long as the Mac supports the earlier version. If it previously had Snow Leopard, then re-installing is fine.
However!!! If you have a newer computer that was "born with" Lion, you cannot downgrade, as the firmware will not be compatible.

I've now installed the ad blocker, thrown away the unwanted files, and thrown away a copy of Firefox that Adware said had a problematic extension.
Things are better, but still slow.
Activity Monitor shows that with just Mail, Chrome and Excel running, 2.9GB of my 4GB RAM is used. Opening InDesign (always slow) increase that to 3.2GB. But the graph stays green.
Console shows several potential problems but I don't know if any are significant. In any case I will call my Mac store tomorrow to ask their advice about RAM.

I have a late 2009 iMac, with the default Nvidia 9400 Graphics card.
I was wondering what my options are for upgrading. I use Windows 7 via Bootcamp, so I need a card that is compatible/has available drivers.
This is for gaming. On the lowest settings of "Call of Duty 4", I get about 100 FPS... Was hoping to be able to play on higher resolution w/o the fps lag.
I'm not good with the hardware part of computers at all, but know how to get around the OS.In most cases the graphics cards in iMacs are Not upgradeable. They are usually soldered to the logic board. RAM is considered, along with harddrives, the only component that is upgradeable in an iMac, unlike in PC's. So basically you would need to sell your unit and purchase an iMac with a more powerful graphics card.

ok here goes nothing i have a late 2009 iMac 27 11.1 intel bought it refurbished and they installed mountain lion 10.8.4 on delivery w/o disks i think ran lion orig. idk & its been all problems 10.8.5 M.L so tried Maverick 10.9 now worse please help me.....i still have backups of software for mountain lion 10.8 however i need to throw everything on a usb toshiba 1TB external storage for backup, plus from what ive read being i needed to try to go back and update the efi and frimware for my original model but when i found the right one it wont accept it.....and now i just tried to reinstall my mountain lion probably shoud have left in the cloud til i got backed up ...which i now needed to move my previous backed up stuff off the drive to reformat it properly as i read it being toshiba needs to be guid hard drive mac im relatively new to the whole mac thing and im just as ****** off as i was with PC ....lol i just wanna record music and have a steady workflow i do have a new 4s iphone and cloud storage but i believe my computers hacked or got malware or just ****** from incompatiable software ......and keychains not working for admin either PLEASE tell ,me what to do thx .....i will be so grateful im good with recording software and stuff bad with computers programing lol HELP me

I have partly the same problem (Sceen blackening) sparodically.
2010 iMAC with I7 CPU and ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB Graphics.
If I lower the brightness to around (3 or sometimes 4 of the on screen squares F2) the issue does not happen at all. I prefer a bright screen.
The issue commenced immediately after instaalling OS X 10.8.2 update one year ago.
The current software is OS X 10.9 (13A603)
The graphics on this computer are always first rate when working properly even at maximum brightness
There are particular days and times when the problem routinely occurs.
Some of my neighbors with iMacs have similar problems.
I live adjacent to the City of London in an area where new building seems to be developing faster than the various utilities and there are known Power Network issues. Professional surge supressors make no difference.
I live in a large property with four independent ring mais. The issue is present on all four rings. I have yet to take the computer elsewhere to possibly eliminate power issues from the problem.
I am reluctant to replace an otherwise fine top of range iMac which otherwise serves me well since the same problems might be present. -

You can upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion and Mavericks. I recommend you to upgrade to OS X Mavericks because it is the most recent version and it is free.

I want to go back to Snow Leopard but I get "you have to install mac osx.app 23.1.1
I have a new 21.5 iMac I just purchased July 9 so I was able to download Lion for free under the up-to-date program. After installing Lion I decided I wanted to go back to Snow Leopard for various reasons. When I restart with the original Snow Leopard DVD that came with my machine and holding the C key down, I get the window for Mac OS X install DVD. I click the icon to install SL and another window pops up stating "You can't use this version of the application. Install Mac OSX.app with this version of Mac OSX. You have to install Mac OSX.app 23.1.1" To answer the question before hand....I don't have a time machine backup.
Thanks for all your help guys. I had trouble with my first install of Lion, it seemed buggy and when I tried some of the suggestions you offered, my machine did not always react the way it should have. I thought that was weird because it's a new iMac, only three weeks old. Pondini pointed me in the right direction and I think Lion is stable now. This worked after a few tries, not sure why I wasn't getting consistent results but it worked eventually.
1. Shut the computer down.
2. Hold "command" and "R" and turn on the computer (I believe this is recovery HD from the internet because it wasn't working from my hard drive)
3. After a few unsuccessful tries, and repeating #1 and #2, I finally got a window to reinstall Lion. This took about an hour to download and after that things went as expected.
As long as Lion is more stable than it was on my first install, which it seems to be now, I'll just stay with it. After this experience, I would say "make sure you need the features in Lion, and that all your current programs are compatible with Lion before you forge ahead."

You can sync as many iDevices as you own to a single iTunes library if you want to do so. If you manage the content manually, you can pick and choose the apps, music, videos and so on that you want on each device. One iTunes account means using the same Apple ID to purchase and update all of your apps. You can share apps on both devices because once you buy an app, you can download it to all of your iDevices - as many times as you want - using the same Apple ID and iTunes account. If you decide to do this, you have to sync to the same computer each time in order to keep all of your shared apps in the one iTunes library.
The Kindle App content is not synced to the iTunes library. It is controlled by your Kindle account. I believe that you can go into your Kindle account and transfer your purchase to your other devices - iPad, computer, etc. You can both have the Kindle app on your iPads and share the content as far as I know, so I see no conflict there. However, while I do have the Kindle app and an account, I do not use it very often.
If you want to share the one iTunes account, there should be no problems with a second iPad. I sync my iPad, my iPod Touch and my wife's iPod Touch to my MacBook using the same iTunes library and we have different content on all three devices. My daughter uses my iTunes account for her iPod Touch and syncs to her own MacBook and her own iTunes library.

As I stated my late 2009 iMac 27 inch hard drive failed and is being replaced.. I am being charged as machine does not qualify for the call back program..call backs are on 2011 machines.. However i am in shock that my segate internal iMac hard drive failed in less than two years.. are there others with similar issue? Also when I get machine back will new hard drive be stable .. How do I make sure my working environment is reliable.. I have all my data and work backed up and will be able to rebuild my system but I really do not want to have to go through this down the line again.

I may have finally solved a problem that I have seen a ton of people in all different types of discussions around the world having trouble with ...... I am going to upload some pictures of what I was getting in the beginning and it came out of no where .... I had the random pixel problem with my display and to make a long story short I came across an article two days ago regarding internal temperatures and fan speed ...... I kept reading about apples approach which is not the point ..... More importantly I dug deeper into temperature control and fan settings .... I discovered all kinds of software and there is only one in my eyes that can help anyone dealing with this display problem .... I will be honest, I do not have the money right now for anything extra and am barely getting by and that is why I kept at it ... I figured keep trying different things because a repair is out of the question ... http://www.crystalidea.com/macs-fan-control - This program has solved my problem - I get to adjust three internal temperatures inside my Imac and slowly but surely as the temperatures remained constant the display is fine .... Like new again .... I cant believe it ..... Turns out the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB graphics card gets very hot causing it to not do what it is supposed to ..... Anyone that has any questions do not hesitate to contact me ...... I am going to upload some pics .... They are not that clear but if you are going through this you will recognize the images for sure - There was so many more variations but this should help out - Thanks to everyone that takes the time out to help people on this support site .... My partner has set up multiple profiles on the iMac and has not done the sharing of files and software correctly. Therefore we have some programs that do not operate in all profiles. I want to go back to a single profile but need to be sure I am not going to lose any data or programs in the process.
Can any one give me a step by step guide - I am not mac savvy.

I recently just downloaded the 'Waze' app as a backup for my Garmin. I've read a few reviews that seem to rant and rave about how good the GPS app is. It is community driven and maps are constantly being updated by users. Plus it has a few other fun stuff in it (something similar to Gasbuddy where you can owe prices on the map). But like the person above me said, there is lots of useful free GPS apps in the App Store.
Oh and I may be wrong but I remember reading an article about Google being slower about updating its maps system--ie no turn by turn voice, which many people have had complaints about.

I've been watching the forums for a while now, and I know about the box shortage, but I'm afraid there are still some things that confuse me. It's been almost three weeks since I submitted a request for the first gen nano replacement program. Has anyone else been waiting this long? I admit, it's really frustrating to just have to wait with no word from Apple about when we can expect to recieve boxes.
I was also wondering if there's been any sort of answer on what the mailed-in nanos are being replaced with. Brand new first gen nanos, new nanos of a different generation, refurbished nanos (first gen or otherwise)? Maybe I've been looking in the wrong places, but I haven't seen a definitive answer. Has anyone completed the whole replacement program who can answer this?

Upgrading RAM may help as suggested by Ogelthorpe.
System Preferences
Close all windows and quit all applications.
Hold the option key down and click the "Go" menu in the Finder menubar.
Select "Library" from the dropdown, then "Preferences" folder.
Look for this file.
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Right click each one of those and select " Move To Trash" from the contextual menu.
Restart the computer.
Safari
Go step by step by step and test.
1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
Restart the computer.
Start up in Safe Mode.

2. Delete Caches.db
Close all windows and quit all applications.
Hold "option" key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
Select "Library" from the dropdown.
Library > Caches > com.apple.Safari > Caches.db
Right click the Caches.db file and select "Move To Trash.
Close windows and relaunch Safari.
3. Empty Caches
Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
4. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn off Extensions if any and launch Safari again to test.
Turn on those one by one and test. -
Are there any issues after installing AT&T's free McAfee?
Since installing it on my Mac Pro laptop with Maverick installed, I've been getting unrecognizable app names icons.
Antivirus tools can and variously do cause problems, yes.
One of the typical first steps for troubleshooting weird errors is the removal of the antivirus tools.
Here, I'd remove McAfee per the documented procedures, reboot, and test again.
If I wished to secure the OS X system, I would install ClickToPlugin in Safari, would disable Oracle Java in Safari and any other web browsers or would simply remove or not install Oracle Java, and would remove Adobe Flash Player, and would also disable opening "safe" file extensions within Safari. (I generally don't install antivirus tools on OS X systems, but then administrative access is also restricted.)
FWIW — if you're downloading kits for various tools — please go to the author's own download site for the particular package. Avoid downloading tools from pop-ups or freebies or the rest — don't download anything from any other sites. Go directly to the author's distribution site. I mention this here as unfortunately some of the major download aggregators are now adding toolbars and other baggage, and those add-ons can cause weirdnesses.
