I have a macbook air late 2010 and keep getting a warning that my hard drive is full and to delete things so I purchased a external hard drive (1TB) but I'm just not sure what the correct way to transfer and store files to the external drive is. First MAC

I purchased a macbook air about 5 months ago and lately i keep recieving a warning that the hard drive or disk is full and that I will need to move items to trash in order to free up space on it. I purchased a external hard drive 1 TB but I'm very new to mac and ios and unsure as to how I'm suppose to transfer my files (video, pics, music etc.) from my mac over to the external hard drive in the correct way so I won't end up deleting them permenately or screwing anything up with my mac as far as the applications and programs being able to run. Am I supposed to just copy to the external hard drive and then move to and empty the trash? That's pretty much all I could come up with, but then what if i need or want to access that file again at a later time. Also, I have an i Phone and i pad so with i cloud it automatically syncs all my purcheses and if i delete something from itunes on my mac it deletes from my ipad.
I'd appreciate any kind of input i think im just a little lost here. I have to say i love my Mac and wouldn't trade it for anything (except maybe a macbook pro w/more memory)... Is there something I'm missing???

To free up hard drive space the best bet is to move data files that you don't need access to all the time. Likely candidates are music, video, and photos. Things like word processing and spreadsheet files can also be moved but they tend not to be very large and so don't free up much space. The problem with moving the above mentioned files is that iTunes and iPhoto need to know where the files are stored.
Here's an article explaining how to move the iTunes folder. You can move the iPhoto library using the Finder but there is a slight complication. Start iPhoto, open the Preferences and click on the Advanced tab. The first option is "Copy items to the iPhoto Library". If this option is checked, copy the iPhoto library to your external folder (drag it from the Pictures folder to your external drive) and then delete it from your Picture folder. If this option is not checked, it is a bit more complicated and we'll need to talk a bit.

I have a MacBook Air, Late 2010, and would like to make a complete copy of everything on it. Unsure sure of best external device to purchase or if possible? Can you assist? Thanks

You will need at least one hard drive. It can be external in its own enclosure with USB 3.0 or 2.0 cable, or an internal HD with a docking station and USB connection. If you live in the U.S., Other World Computing (OWC) is a good place to buy one. You can also get them at Amazon or eBay or any number of places. You will also need cloning software, such as Superduper or Carbon Copy Cloner. You also have Time Machine on your MBA. It is better to have more than one spare disk for backup as HDs can fail at any time.

Read and follow the Bootcamp Installation instructions that you were offered to view when you ran Bootcamp Assistant.
Run Bootcamp Assistant again and select the option to download the Bootcamp Support software. Follow the instructions. Then boot into Windows and install the Windows Support software you downloaded and saved.

  • I have a MacBook Air late 2010 with 4gb RAM and 128gb SSD, is it possible to upgrade that hard drive through a genius appointment?

    As above, cheers

RAM cannot be upgraded - there are no RAM sockets - the chips are soldered to the logic board. The SSD can be upgraded through third party upgrades (see OWC) but Apple won't perform this upgrade. You'll either have to install it yourself (an easy upgrade though it could void your warranty) or have it installed by an independent Apple service provider.

I just purchased a new MacPro 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor to replace my existing 2006 MacPro 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon because it cannot be undated with the new Lion operating system.
My question is what is the safest way to transfer all my files to the new computer.  1) simply install my existing 2TB HD into the new Mac Pro, set it as the startup drive, and update its10.7  operating system or 2) or use the migration program.
I'm concerned that simply installing the existing 2TB HD, I may have issues with it not recognising some infromation written for the old 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon.

your new system runs 10.6.8 just fine as has been said and stated many times.
    I would clone it first.
I would even clone the original system it has.
And if you have or want to use Lion and then Mountain Lion, fine - I would still keep backups of every OS.
I am not a fan of putting the OS and Apps plus all the data all on one drive. I like to keep them separate.
Whatever OS, rerun the last combo update is all and any other updates.
And by "new Lion" I assume you don't mean 10.7 but "Moutain" 10.8.  Part of me says keep Lion and SL around, and test and try out ML with your apps and other hardware you may have. After too many years, waiting for 10.8.1 - and give everyone time to update their apps and retest.

You can try doing a SMC reset however I don't think that is the solution.
    SMC RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    • On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-• Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

Some have found relief just by reinstalling, but it is more than likely incompatible third-party applications that slow it down.
You will have to investigate to see what it is.
Open Activity Monitor and see if anything is using a lot of CPU% or Memory. If they are, check to see if there is an update for them.
Another place to look is the Console. See if anything is logging repeating messages with throttling and/or respawn in the All Messages list.
Sometimes it is not that easy to root out the problems, but if you have anything that purported to clean, protect, optimize, maintain, or flush your system, then that is likely the cause.

I'm doubtful it's a missing driver too, but I feel as though it's driver related. The first time XP was installed, after first boot without installing drivers, it was without sound etc, but fundamentally the system worked. Now after first boot, it's very buggy. Thanks for your suggestion Tonny. I ran the tool but it turns out the HDD is fine. Besides, everything runs fine in safe mode.
Does anyone know if (generally speaking) there is any firmware on the graphics card that would get updated via a Windows update? i.e. is it possible that Windows update downloaded a driver for the graphics card that installed new firmware that wasn't all that compatable with XP?

  • MacBook Air Late 2010 and Apple Hardware Test

I just bought a second hand MacBook Air Late 2010, 13 inches, 2.13 Core 2Duo. Everything works great, system re-installed after erasing the HD ( Mountain Lion) Internet recovery works great, all is ok.
The only thing that I can't work out how to get is AHT. I tried holding down D at the start but nothing. Holdind down D and Alt takes me to the Internet Recovery harware test, but when I try to run it, it comes out that the machine is not supported. I read that to be able to use it, I needed to dowload a firmware update. And so I did. But when I tried to install it it came out that it was not going to work on my system ( bare in mind that I can access and use Internet Recovery)
    What Am I doing wrong?
I'm not too bothered about being able to use  AHT at the moment, but there will be time when I will need to.
All the help will be appreciated.

It has to be available. It is the only way to restore that system back to as shipped from factory specs and reinstall the ilife apps. In your situation since you have another mac and a valid license for mountain lion and you have a air of a newer model year that can use the internet recovery system you were able to install a version of os x. But if you didn't have a license and that air was just one revision prior to that model year you would be stuck with a computer and no working os on it or no valid os on it.
Basically when anyone is selling an mac computer that computer should be wiped and the original os x version reinstalled. To do that on system older then late 2011, or some of the early 2011 models, you need the original apple supplied reinstall media. Whether that is dvds or a usb thumb drive. Otherwise the seller is selling pirated software and the buyer has no way of updating or upgrading that mac computer.

hi i am juraij.....i hv macbook air late 2010 11.6inch and i have been trying to set up my apple id for FaceTime but every time i put in my id and password and sign in it shows my other associated apple id and ask to mark the one that i want to link with FaceTime .....after doing so it says to verify and when i verify..it take some time about 5-10 seconds and then take me again to the very first page  i.e., it asks again for apple id and password and it continues...and also  face time preferences is GREYED OUT.....PLZ help......

Did you ever verify the primary email address associated with the ID you are trying to use with FaceTime?  If you aren't sure, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage your Apple ID, sign in with the ID you are trying to use with FaceTime, then see if it says Verified under Primary Email Address (see image below).  If it doesn't, click "Resend" to resend the verification email.  Then check the email address for an email from Apple (be sure to check both the inbox as well as the spam/junk folder).

  • Blinking cursor when installing Windows 7 on a MacBook Air (Late 2010)

    Hi.
After spending several days trying to solve this, I turn to this forum.
I have a MacBook Pro Retina (Mid 2012) and I had no problem installing W7 on that machine.
My wife has a MacBook Air (Late 2010), on which I am trying to do the same.
I use an external LaCie BD/DVD reader/writer, which I also used for the MBP without problems.
After partitioning and restarting, the install DVD doesn't seem to want to work with the MBA, though. Only a blinking cursor appears. Occationally some message like "Error code 5" or BOOTMGR image is corrupt. The system cannot boot."
I've tried starting with Alt, and when the screen appears where I can choose the Install DVD, there is no HD image, as on the MBP in the same situation, but just an image of a disk under which is written "EFI boot" - and it keeps poofing, appearing, poofing appearing. Actually, the first of these poofing images is actually called Windows, but choosing this returns the same blinking cursor.
I have tried resetting the PRAM and SMC, as well as repairing the disk.
Any ideas how to solve this?
    Best,
    Richard

Can I install Window 7 Professional on a boot camp partition on my 1.8/2GB/64GB SSD MBA?
Today I installed Win7 Preimum on my brand new MBA (1.8/4GB/128GB SSD).  I started with a stock MBA and first installed the new version of Parallels (7).  After that installation, I installed Win7 Premium, followed by MS Office for Students and MS Streets and Trips.  I should note that I also added slightly over 500 tunes for iTunes.
I was hoping to only install Excel and Word, but I never saw an option to go custom and as a result, all of Office for Students got installed.
With Parallels I didn't have to partition the hard drive. While I'm not totally sure, I think Parallels "grabs" empty space as needed, either for OS-X or Windows.
When I finished the installation, the computer reports that I still have 87GB.
I would assume if you went the route above and installed all the same programs, you would end up with 43GB of free space.
I intend to use my MBA as a road warrior, mainly surfing with some light Excel/Word.  Unless you really need the Professional version, you might consider just installing the Premium version if the size of the program is much larger.
I've only been running for a few hours, but the machine seems very robust in both OS-X and Win7.  Re the size of your hard drive, you might consider picking up a small external hard drive.  I have a Western Digital Passport that is about the size of a cigarette pack and has the look of something that Apple might have made. 500GB for about $70.
I'm wondering if your 2GB of RAM might be a little on the weak side for going this route?
