I have a MacBook Pro model 7.1 running 10.6.8; need to upgrade to Mavericks...question concerns 3 software apps:  Reunion 10, Quicken 2007, Appleworks 6.2.9 (word processing docs).  Any recommendations?

Quicken Essentials is universally loathed on this forum.  Quicken 2007 updated for Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks for $15 is the way to go:

Appleworks 6:
Partition your hard drive or add an external drive and install Snow Leopard and use the "dual-boot" method to run Appleworks; and/or
Install Snow Leopard Server (available by telephone order only from the Apple Store 1.800.MYAPPLE [1.800.692.7753]; part number - MC588Z/A) into Parallels and run Appleworks (and most other PowerPC apps) concurrently with Mavericks:

Precisely why it's not an iPad, and why it doesn't cost very much.  An Apple rep would tell you how to connect an iPad to every computer.

I have a macbook pro running snow leopard. Just recently I cannot view youtube videos and other online videos. I recently updated my flashplayer plugin and I believe that is the problem. Is the latest flashplayer plugin compatible with 10.6.8? If this is so, I need to find an older flash player plugin to reinstall. I do not want to upgrade from 10.6.8 at this time because I have 18 yrs. worth of financial records on Quicken that I have read will not work with Lion and I've read bad things about running music programs on Maverick.

    1)  Quicken 2007 for Intel (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks) is a full featured app that can be downloaded from Intuit for $15 and will work with your data file if you are using Quicken 2005, 2006 or 2007 (if you version is earlier, let me know for more instructions on easy conversion):
    http://quicken.intuit.com/personal-finance-software/quicken-2007-osx-lion.jsp
    2) Partition your hard drive, or add an external hard drive and install Mavericks there and "dual-boot" to operate your music programs in Snow Leopard and experiment with them in Mavericks.
DO NOT install Mavericks over Snow Leopard!

  • I have a MacBook Pro running Lion. I need to use Lion to run my Dragon. I would like to partition my drive to use Maverick for everything but the dictation software. I'm a new pie to apple

I have a MacBook Pro running Lion. I need to use Lion to run my Dragon. I would like to partition my drive to use Mavericks for everything but the dictation software. I'm a newbie to apple

To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

  • I have a Macbook Pro running Yostemite.  Lightroom 5.7.  Whenever I try to add music in the slideshow mode, lightroom shuts down.

Please help!!  I have a Macbook Pro, running Yosemite. Lightroom 5.7
Whenever I try to add music to a slideshow, it shuts down the program.

Try resetting your SMC and NVRAM before attempting to install again.
    Resetting the NVRAM/PRAM
Note: This will not delete any data.
The NVRAM/PRAM stores information such as speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and recent kernel panic information (if any). You should reset the NVRAM/PRAM if you experience issues relating to these functions.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Turn on the computer by pressing the Power Button.
On the built-in keyboard, press and hold the Command (⌘), Option (⌥), P, and R keys before the gray screen appears.
Continue to hold down the keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chime for the second time.
Release the keys on the built-in keyboard.
Resetting the SMC of an Intel-based portable Mac with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: This will not delete any data.
The SMC is responsible for controlling various system functions. None of your data will be deleted by resetting the SMC.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
Release the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
    I hope I helped.

  • I have a MacBook Pro running mac osx 10.8, Screen saver keeps reverting to national geographic photos.

I have a MacBook Pro running mac osx 10.8, Screen saver keeps reverting to national geographic photos.

Just found this solution on another website. I tried it and it works. No more polar bears and Savannahs!
Apparently if you put it in the folder called "Desktop Pictures" it will work.
So, copy whatever folder of pictures you would like to use as your screensaver and then go to:
    Macintosh HD>Library > Desktop Pictures
Paste your folder into this folder called "Desktop Pictures".
You may have to enter the administrator code (the password you use to open your mac usually).
Then, go back to System Preferences, go to Desktop and Screensaver, click on the Screensaver tab on the top, go to the drop down menu beside "Source" (under the picture) and click on "Choose Folder". Navigate to the Macintosh HD>Library>Desktop Pictures and then click on the folder you just pasted in there. Click "Choose" and you're all set.

    To expand on Niels post...
First you need to check that your current Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Specs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If it does... then you need to Purchase and Install the Snow Leopard Disc,
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
( It should be noted that Apple will send paid MobileMe members the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD for free.)

I have a macbook pro with OSX 10.5.8.  How do I upgrade to Mountain Lion when it is available?  I need to upgrade to run quickbooks and other apps

First, you need Snow Leopard (10.6): http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A. Then you use Software Update to update it to 10.6.8. When Mountain Lion (10.8) comes out, find it in the Mac App Store.

  • Have a MacBook Pro running Lion and an IMac running Snow Leopard. Want to Back up both images and restore on opposite machine. Essentially swapping images between hard drives. Is this possible and any "gotcha's" to look for? Thanks

If the MBP came with Lion, it most likely won't boot with SL. Easiest thing to do is create a bootable backup/clone of each to an ext HD, partitioned to hold each on a separate volume, ensure that the original machines can boot with their respective clones, and finally, try booting the other machine with the other clone. Images are useless since you can't boot with them to test them out.

If neither iPhoto not IC can seethe card it might suggest an issue with the card or the ports on the camera/mac.
Try reformat the card, change the ports and/or use a USB Card Reader.

Have old MacBook Pro running tiger 10.4 want to save date to external hard drive and buy newer MacBook and still use same drive. Any suggestions, most  WD drives say nothing about os tiger 10.4. The OS compatibility  is much newer on the data.  Totally confused. Not a computer person.

I haven't checked reviews recently but there's a difference between bare drives and drives with enclosures.  Western Digital made some of the most reliable drives last time I checked, though the enclosures weren't all that great.  It is convenient to get both in one package but I usually buy a highly rated enclosure and then put a highly rated drive in it myself.  OWC sells some good enclosures but if they put a so-so drive inside of it then the package is only as good as its weakest component.  If you get a package from them, ask them what drive is inside (some vendors have no idea what's inside  -  went to an Apple Store recently and they couldn't tell me what was inside some of their Apple brand enclosures).  My first thought if buying a new drive would be to buy a OWC enclosure with a WD drive, but chek around because I may be out of date.
10 years ago Seagate was one of the best drives. Now they rate poorly in reviews.
