If they don't have a Mac version and you must have it, you'll have to install Windows in Boot Camp or similar app.

How do i get to watch something that will only open with window's media?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but we are new to the mac and have been trying to get some way to get windows media videos to play on our new mac. I tried to download the software to let them play on quicktime but it says that it can't play on an intel machine.....So then i tried to download windows media for mac from their website and when i do i see a file on the desktop called windows media.sitx. When i try to open it it says that there is no program to open this program. So what is next? I have not been able to find anything about this out there so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your response. My operating system is XP. When I try to open a pfd document I just get a series of letters and symbols in a dialog box. The top of the box says "select the encoding that makes your document readable". I can choose Windows, MS-Dos, or other (there is a long list to choose from). None seem to make a difference. If I save the document to my desk top I can right click on it and choose an option "Open with AdobeReader 9" and it opens fine.

What operating system does your computer use? What happens when you attempt to open a PDF document rather than saving it first? Please include any/all error messages. Also, have you tried opening documents from other locations or just one in particular?

In order to have a separate 5GB of storage he would need to have his own iCloud account with a separate ID. You can still share the same ID for iTunes; it does not need to be the same as the ID used for iCloud.
In order to migrate his phone to a separate account, begin by saving any photo stream photos that he wants to keep on his phone to the camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos he wants to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud on his phone, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud. Other devices still using the account will not be effected by this.) When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, choose Keep On My iPhone. Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom). Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge. This will upload the data to his new account.
Finally, if there is any merged data in the accounts you will then have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want from each account.

Go to System Preferences / Accounts - Login Items.
In order to make changes, click the lock icon bottom left corner of the pane. You may be prompted for your admin password.
Select the apps you don't want to launch on startup then click - (minus).

Lion includes a hybrid Kernel, as well 32bit and 64bit core OS. By default it will boot the 64bit part.
press 3+2 keyboard combo on bootup. This forces 32bit mode for the Kernel ( the apps are still 64bit default ). 6+4 will force 64bit mode.
The 32bit Kernel can load 32bit drivers ( kernel extensions = *.kext files in /system/library/extensions ).
The 64bit Kernel will not load any 32bit drivers
if a Application makes problems in its native 64bit mode, you can force it to run in 32bit compatibility mode by revealing it in Finder, "get-info" on the Apps Icon and checkmark "run in 32bit mode".
No matter which kernel is booted, 32 or 64 Lion can always execute 32 and 64bit apps.

iCloud storage is not allocated by device. iCloud storage is allocated to your iCloud AppleID. You get 5GB of iCloud storage.

there were two different 23-inch Apple Cinema HD displays made. The first one was made between 2002 and 2004, and has an ADC connector. The second one was made between 2004 and 2008, and has a DVI-D connector.
If you have the display with an ADC connector, then according to this Apple page, your display will work with your MacBook Pro if it’s a 13-inch or 15-inch model. If you have a first-generation MacBook Pro, you’d need an Apple DVI to ADC Adapter (or equivalent) to connect them. If you have a Unibody or Retina MacBook Pro, then you’d also need a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter (or equivalent) to complete the connection. A Retina model would also have the option of using a third-party HDMI to DVI-D adapter to complete the connection with the DVI to ADC adapter.
If you have the display with a DVI-D connector, then if you have a first-generation MacBook Pro, you should be able to plug it in directly. If you have a Unibody or Retina MacBook Pro, then the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter would let you make the connection. Again, Retina models also would have the option of using a third-party HDMI to DVI-D adapter.

I really appreciate all your help. Today I spent some time on the problem. First I purchased any video converter from the ap store and then I connected the camera to the mac with the original usb cable that came with the camera. I turned on the camera and selected backup on pc and the logo came up on my home page. I opened it and after several attempts i found the 3 video files that were on the camera. I then converted them from a tod file to mp4 and then transfered them to imovie. Now I have to figure out how to send the video to youtube or move it to an external hard drive which I have not been able to do. So far I am not too fond of imovie 11. If you could send me the download for imovie 6 I then could try that route. When talking to apple support yesterday about the problem they suggested to get Final Cut Express. Its not telling you to update your iPad, its telling you you need to download a recent version itunes on your computer.

Need help with an applet that will only run as an application

I am working on a slide show applet. The problem is that is won't run as an applet. I added a quite standard main method to stick the applet in a JFrame and this worked. I believe that the problem lies in how I am trying to open the files.
here are two of the methods that I believe contain part of the problem
     private void showImage( String image_name )
          image_file = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage( image_name );
          display_image.loadImage( image_file );
          repaint();
     private void setFileFolder( String folder )
          file_finder = new File( folder );
          file_results = file_finder.list();
     }image_file is an object of class Image, display_image is an object of class ImageComponent (extends JComponent to draw an image), and file_finder and file_results are both objects of class File

Ok. I got the image loading to work.
Now how do I fix the second method shown in my first post? It is needed to find all of the images in one specific folder so that the slide show can run.

HT3669 I have an Epsom 1250 photo scanner that will not work with my new iMac. I get an error report indicating 'scanner ot available' and the indicator light on the scanner goes to red.

When I try to use the scanner I get error message 'scanner not available' and the scanner indicator goes red . I have contacted Epsom who advised me to run System update on my Mac several times which I havedone to no avail. The scanner is in working order as it works satifactorily with my 'Windows' laptop. The scanner is listed as being included in the driver updates but It would appear that the driver on my iMac supplied in any update is not suitable.
I am currently running OSX 10.8.4
What steps should I now persue to be able to use the scanner?

I would suggest the troubleshooting steps from this article named Troubleshooting printer issues in OS X found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3147
Don't let the name throw you off, the troubleshooting is relevant for scanners as well.
Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:
Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again. Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
