You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

    Re Time Machine
I have an external  hard drive with files I backed up manually over the past 2 years 1TB of memory.
I am finally taking the leap to use Time machine to back everything.
will I have to reformat that drive, thus wiping my previous back ups?
can I split it the drive in two partitions?
    Also
as I have two separate Macbook Pro's- one older than the other.
    OSX 10.68
    the other is
    OSX 10.75
can I back them up separately?
or even synch and merge files and folders etc? between the two?

You CAN use a drive with files already on it to store Time Machine backups. But long term, that is not recommended. You do not need to reformat or re-partition the drive to do this. Once Time Machine Backups are established, you could remove the old files.
But do not delete Time Machines files with the Finder -- that can cause it to lose its place and lose everything.
With the cost of backup drives under US$100, it might be a better idea in the long run to get another drive. Best results from Time Machine is a drive about 3 times larger than the drive(s) you are backing up.

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.
Pondini has a lot of stuff about getting access to the sparsebundle.

But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

if it's ntfs microsofts filesystem then you need a windows machine to recover them

I have a hitachi hard drive from an old pc. I would like to transfer pics and music to my new macbook air. What cord do I need to make this possible?

Some external cases include cords others (like some printers) consider the cord to be "optional" - read the package or product description. Other World Computing, HH Greg, OfficeMax, any box store or local computer store should have a case for your old drive.
You are fortunate in that the Mac will automagically read the DOS format disk... you'd never be able to connect and old Mac HD to a WinDUHows machine.

  • I have thousands of emails on my Ipad that I would like to delete permanently.  How can I do this?

I have thousands of emails on my IPad that I would like to delete permanently.  How can I do this?

    Hi
I know this feature isn't the most intuitive but I found out how to do it all at once.
Go to the mail box you want the messages deleted from (probably the Inbox of your most used Email Address)
    Tap Edit
Tap the circle left of the first message on the list to select the first email message
Put your finger on Move but don't release it!
With another fingerdeselect the first message so there are no messages selected
Remove your finger from the Move button.
Select the mailbox you want the messages to be moved to (probably Trash)
    Hope this helps!

  • Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW photo files from my camera, through the IPad and back to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras does not use an SD card.  How can I do this?

Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW files from my camera through the IPad and out to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras has an SD card but the other one doesn't have a card that would fit in any of the camera devices I've seen on line.  Realted to this, I bought the IPad camera accessory.  Can I put the SD card in the device and also hook the external hard drive to the USB port of the accessory and download from the camera to the hard drive?  Can I put Lightroom or the Nikon photo editing software on the IPad?  Right now I carry a PC laptop and external hard drives with me on wildernes trips.  Internet and WiFi are not available.  Because I shoot so many photos and they're in RAW I need to download from the camera to the external drive because I run out of memory on the PC (and it has much more memory than the IPad).  I have Nikon NX software and lightroom on my PC.  I'd love to be able to reduce the weight I carry by using the IPad to edit my photos each night while on trips.  Is this possible and how would I do it?  I'd appreciate any guidance.

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

  • I have an external hard drive with a shared music folder, which I can access (from Home Sharing) and play music on my Windows computer. On my new Mac, I can see the drive in Home Sharing but not play any music. What's the solution?

I have an external network hard drive with a shared music folder (WD MyBookLive), which I can access from Home Sharing and play music on my Windows computers. On my new Mac, I can see the drive and the music in Home Sharing but the tracks will not play. All the other authorized computers in my home network show up in Home Sharing and I can play the content. What's the solution?

  • I have an external hard drive with my new iMac.  I am trying to load Age of Empires III on the new computer.  I am supposed to drag the icon onto my hard drive icon.  Where is that?

New iMac and not a computer whiz.  I have a new iMac with an external drive.  I am trying to load an old Mac game on it.  The Age of Empires icon tells me to drag it to the hard drive icon.  Where is that?  I have tried finder and launch pad.  No luck.

Choose Computer from the Finder's Go menu and find the internal drive.

  • I have an external hard drive with a lot of video files in the mp4 format.

I have all of my music in my computer, so I don't want to lose that functionality. I'd like to keep the videos on the external hard drive, but have album artwork and be able to move those videos with their artwork onto my iPhone through iTunes. How can I do this?

  • Have an external hard drive, with files on it, no longer showing on desktop

I've had an external hard drive for a few months now, and about 3 weeks ago, it stopped showing up on the desktop and when i search for it, nothing shows up. All of the cords are still connected.
Is there a way to fix this so i don't destroy the files that are on there?

Did you try to see if the drive would show up in "Disk Utility"?
First unplug any other firewire/usb devices (except your mouse and keyboard). Sometimes my external firewire drive gives me some issues when my iSight camera is connected. Normally no issues, but once in while they don't like each other and I have to unplug them and plug them back in (sometimes a reboot too).
Unplug and re-plug the external drive connection into your Mac and turn the external drive on. Then go to your Applications folder --> Utilities folder --> open Disk Utility. If the external drive shows up...highlight the drive and click on Repair Permissions. If the drive still does not mount, try swapping out the firewire or USB cable to the external drive with a known good working cable and try rebooting you Mac with your drive plugged in and powered on. Try repairing permissions with Disk Utility again. If you know the cable is good and the drive still will not mount, try connecting it to another Mac.
If your drive is now showing up in Disk Utility and in your Finder, you may have just changed a view setting for the showing or not showing of mounted media on the desktop.
Remember back your computer and backup your external drive if there is any data that is not duplicated or stored elsewhere. I hear of a lot people just storing data on their external and only have one physical copy of a file(s). Never. Always have at least 2 copies of your data on at least 2 different drives, DVD, CD, etc. You just never know when a drive will stop. A great drive cloning app is SuperDuper, google it.
Let us know if you are still having issues. If yes, please give more details...drive brand, firewire or usb, iMac model and OS version.

  • HT1661 I have a mini mac osx lion, I have an external hard drive with my files from my pc that crashed. my mini mac is now running parallels desk top 7 and windows 8 consumers preview. can I simply plug in the extral hard drive to upload my files or ?

how should I upload my pc saved files to my macmini with paralle desk top 7 running windows 8 consumer preview

    Worst... Win 8
    2nd worst Mountain Lion/10.8.x
    3rd worst Lion 10.7.x
    4th worst Windows ME.
5th worst, geez, I'm not sure!
As far as Windows goes, I think more things have gone backwards since XP, W7 improving on Vista, but...
As far as OSX goes, more steps backwards than forwards since Tiger/10.4.11
Even Linux is going backwards now... & it wasn't always that easy to start with, it's outdone it's usefullness trying to incorporate the worst features of Windows &
    OSX!
I totally agree on the Backup thing, but which exact 3 TB are you thinking of, many are worthless & unreliable???
And BTW, I think Time Machine is the worst backup solution ever invented, but if you have trouble using a TV Remote, it's better than a swift kick in the pants!

  • My drive collapsed. I have an external hard drive. How can I put all my files there, using disk utility?

So my MacBook Pro collapsed one day, and it turns on but only "Restarts" and shuts itself down on the procesa. The only thing I have access to is that 'Command + R' thing. There I tried "Verifying" and "Reparing" the Diak but the message of "Cant repair disk backup as many files as possible, reformat the disk and restore" popped up. So I have am external hard drive with more than enough space to put all of my files in there. my question is: HOW DO I DO THAT? from disk utility. Can somone please help me? Please! Step by step cause ptherwise I will mess it up and I really dont want to lose all the memories I have in my computer.

After you restart so you have access to Disk Utility, with the external drive connected, choose the external drive from the left sidebar of the DU window.  If the drive has not been formatted for the Mac, choose Partition from the buttons top center of the main window.  Give the drive a name, you can leave it as one partition if you like, make sure the format is set as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and the partition table is GUID.  Then Apply and acknowledge that you know this will erase the disk.
Then go to the button that says Restore.  Drag and drop the internal drive, Macintosh HD is most common, to the Source box, and drag and drop the external drive to Destination box.  Then Restore.
That will create a clone of the internal and that will be a bootable clone.
