I have an Ipad, I activated the time capsule with no issues. I added the airport Utility application without issue. However, I do not know how to access the hard drive with either my Windows computer or the Ipad. Does someone know how?

On windows load the airport utility .. latest correct version as possible.. there is no windows 8 but win7 works after a fashion.
Make sure the TC is using SMB compatible names.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Type the name directly into windows explorer.
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress
If no luck turn off all the firewalls.. internal windows plus security software plus whatever other gargyoles and other rubbish AV software you have running.
Ensure windows is able to at least ping the TC by IP address and name..
Use the utility in windows to set file sharing to guest account on with full read and write access.. and set workgroup to WORKGROUP.

I have just bought an airport time capsule and im trying to install an airport utility. I tried the 6 version but it wd not load because it said might mac would not support. I then tried the 5.6.1. and it said it would not work with airport capsule.

You should either return the Time Capsule or upgrade your Mac at least to OS X 10.7.

TS3679 I got the time capsule and it seems to be backing up everyday. For some reason I am running out of local disk space, and it looks like around 30 percent of the space is used in "Backup". Shouldn't back up space only be used in the time capsule?

Time Capsule blinks yellow,when I go to airport utility to set up, it Says This apple wi-fi bse station doesn't have any DNS server addresses and might have trouble connecting to internet. My internet works, but I can't back up anything. What do I do??

Worked fine for about a couple of weeks after my son -law installed the time capsule. I can access the Internet both from my wife's I phone and from my desktop. I think that I need to get the DNS server numbers and put them in the two blanks; but where do I get them? Thanks, Jim

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

I would like to be able to access my hard drive while I am away from my desk. I am not running OS X Server. How can I do this?
Also, I am behind an Airport Base Station. Which ports would I need to open up?

VPN does not allow you to control your computer remotely, you are probably thinking of VNC. A VPN essentially extends your local network so that you can access it remotely. You can control your host computer to more than you can control any other computer by accessing it over your LAN.
I still think a VPN is the best option, but it's not easy to install (MacOS X server has a VPN with a GUI built in). OpenVPN is a great option, and there are several GUI interfaces for it (look for these on www.versiontracker.com). This is best because it is secure and will allow you to access your entire hard drive.
Like I said in the last post, WebDAV is also an option. This is what a .Mac iDisk is. This will only allow you access a specific folder (or set of folders) that reside in the Apache (var/www) directory. Although you can always make an alias to the apache directory and keep it in your Documents folder.
A third option that I didn't state before because it's probably the least best is to use NFS to access your home computer. This will allow you to access your entire hard drive. The downside to this is that there is no encryption, nor a password. For security, it uses IP or domain addresses. So this is not an option unless you will to accessing your hard drive from a computer (or a few computers) with (a) static IP address(es).

I Just bought airport TC 2TB and completed setup. Wi-fi and wired connection are working properly. I can access the Airport TC 2 MB HD from mac mini but I haven't seen that I plugged in 640 MB external samsung hard drive to USB port.
File sharing is active on the Airport Utility
Airport base station fw: 7.7.3

Linksys E4200: How to access USB hard drive remotely from Android phone or computer

I just purchased a Linksys e4200 router today along with a WD 2TB MyBook hard drive. My intent is to set these two up together so that i can share files on the hard drive with:
Computers on my home network ( 1 Windows 7 desktop wired, 1 windows 7 laptop wifi, 1 XP netbook wifi)
Computers remotely over the internet
Smartphones (Android and Apple) on my home network
Smartphones (Android and Apple) remotely over the internet
My questions are:
Can all of this be done with the E4200?
Has anyone in the communiyt forums set-up remote access for fileshare with smartphones?
What is the easiest way to set-up and configure this?
Does anyone have experience using the WD MyBook Essential (WDBACW002OHBK)? Does it work well with the E4200?

Major concern in your case now, seems like is all about accessing the data from that Shared Hard Drive remotely over the internet....
For that very reason, we can use either of the two ways to access the shared Hard Drive or Network Hard Drive remotely....However, for both the ways, we need to have a public IP address coming in from the modem...(192.168.X.X....172.16.X.X....10.X.X.X...are examples for Private IP, rest all are public IP's)
One of the ways to get this done is through the WAN IP that you are getting from Modem on your connected Cisco Router's status page....Open the set up page with http://192.168.1.1 , go to Status tab - look out for WAN IP - should be a public IP address not a private one....,then so as to access it, you have type in http://wanip:sharename....
Other way round to do the same is via getting the WAN IP converted to the domain name, this is done via dynamic domain naming system (refer to http://TZO.org) in which we converts our WAN IP into a domain name, which will continue to update the ever changing public IP address (WAN IP) on the daily basis....then so as to access it, you have type in http://domainname:sharename.....

How can I transfer my old iTunes (playlists and all) from the hard drive of my old dead computer to the iTunes of my new one?

So my old PC died before I managed to back up my iTunes library onto DVDs. I do however have the hard drive from the old PC with all the program files, files and folders on. I also have the iPhone 4, which has my top rated playlist on but that only holds about 20% of my entire music collection on.
Is it possible to somehow find all my old iTunes music, videos, playlists, podcasts etc and transfer it into the iTunes on the new PC without losing anything?

Why won't my newly formatted MS-DOS(Fat) Hard drive work on my windows computer?

I just bought a Macbook Pro. I understood that to make my old hard drive work with the Mac, I needed to format it to MS-DOS(fat). I also understood that this format was supposed to allow it to work in windows as well. However, after formatting to MS-DOS(fat), my hard drive will no longer become visible on my windows laptop. It makes a noise when I plug it in or take it out, but nothing pops up, and while I am able to find my hard drive in the management section - I am unable to edit it in any way except for disabling it. I cannot access any files. This is problematic for me as the computers used at university are not Macsle
Can anyone please help me?

If I were you, I'd format the drive on the Windows side as NTFS. Then use the $20 Paragon NTFS software to be able to read and write to the volume.

Time Capsule running 7.4.2...AirPort Utility says up-to-date

I upgraded to AirPort Utility 5.5.1. When I check for updates it says I'm up-to-date, but the TC firmware is 7.4.2.
I have a refurbished 1TB dual-band purchased about 9 months ago. Is this firmware update not applicable to my device?

The Time Capsule light continues flashing yellow.

The machine seems to be working fine with the wifi and backup systems. I reset the wifi and the light stopped flashing and was green for a couple of hours, but then started again. Tried a second time with the same outcome. Any ideas?

If you have not already done so, you will need to download and install the full featured version of AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
Then open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 5.6
Click Manual Setup
Click directly on the word Status (2nd line) and a window will open to explain why the Time Capsule is complaining....along with suggestions to remedy the issue. It might be something as simple as a message that an update is available for the Time Capsule.
Suggest that you keep both AirPort Utility 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac. (You cannot delete AirPort Utility 6.0)

It can, but is really not recommended. Sooner or later there will be a fight for space on the drive between Time Machine and the other files.
If you have plenty of free space on the drive, you can do this......but.....have you thought about how you will back up the "other" files that are stored on the Time Capsule?
