How do I do this ? And is there any danger, in doing so, that I might delete any of her ICloud information ?
Sign out in System Preferences>iCloud. This will remove any synced data such as Calendars, emails and Contacts from your Mac, but will have no effect on the data on the server - so that other devices logged into it will continue to see the data.

What's the best way to transfer files from old Macbook Pro to new one? I know Migration assistant, but is there a recommended way? I don't want to put do a system restore or transfer everything from the old laptop, but I do want to move important things like photos, music, documents and such over. Any suggestions on best way to do this?
Another question, perhaps subquestion. If I have, say, an older version of iPhoto but a newer version of one on my new Macbook Pro, will it still transfer photos no problem?

the problems are ALWAYS in the reverse way, when you have the newest (or a newer) version of a given app, and wish to transfer its library to an older version.

I have been using Martin Jahn’s iBackup, with which I have become accustomed and works fine. It also makes daily backups. Its advantage over other apps is that you may add whatever you wish to save, beside its default settings (which you may delete or cancel, of course, even if not recommended); it also has a friendly interface and easily customizable. Of course, this is a personal view, you may try other methods as well, or other backup apps. All are good if you are satisfied and correspond to your needs. -

My one day old MacBook pro just turned off and it won't come back on either through mains or battery power it's as if the unit is completely dead. Even with the mains plugged in there is no green or orange light to say its charging or full charged. The battery was fully charged anyway seconds before the screen went off.
When you say no green or orange light are you refering to the little led on the magsafe connector? That could mean either the charger/cable are bad or the circuitry in the MBP is faulty. Since this is a brand new MBP best bet is to take it back to an Apple Retail store and have the genius bar staff take a look. They can determine if it needs to be reparired or replaced.

I suggest starting over. Boot into Recovery mode, wipe the HD, reinstall the OS, and, on first boot, use the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide to do the migration.'

Thanks, glad it helped you to check your battery status.
Something else to look at would be the cycle count, as you mention that your computer is "ancient". If you have a high number of cycles, it may also be a sign that the battery is tired and possibly nearing it's life span, and may possibly need to be replaced soon. If you see that again you may try a SMC reset to see if that helps, but if it continues you may need a new battery at some point. The battery icon will usually say needs service, or something to that effect. For the later MBP's Apple claims a life span of up to 1000 cycles, of this also will be dependent on who the battery is used, on the older ones I'm not quite sure what the claims were, and I don't know how old "ancient" in your case actually means.
I provide this for your info, so that you understand what may possibly be occurring.

I do I get iwork 08 to work on my husband's macbook pro? I had an older macbook pro and he gave me his newer macbook pro. So, I transferred all the stuff on my old macbook pro to his along with me being a new user/administrator, etc. Now, when I try to create documents or try to print out something, iwork doesn't work, b/c I am logged on as a new user. He did have iwork installed, but it won't work for me. When I transferred it to myself as new user, if gave me a trial period of 30 days, I was wondering why that was. After the 30 days, it said that I needed to put the serial number in from the iwork boxi or if I bought it from the app store, a serial number could be given to me. Also, if I didn't have the box or the serial number, I could buy one? My husband got the computer in 2008 and had the iwork 08 software and installed it. Now, I guess since it has transferred over to a new user, I have to buy another iwork just to print out anything? I don't get it.

In a recent migration using migration assistant from old MacBook Pro core 2 duo (10.6.8) to a newer quad core i7 (10.8.3), when I opened iPhoto for the first time and nothing happened. I then imported all my photos from the old iPhoto, and lost all folders I had. Now it seems I have to redo all folders. Any cure? I could do a clean install if there is a solution.

Granted, they online versions won't be IDENTICAL to the Mac versions you're used to, but it will get you through until you get back home, and you SHOULD have the ability to save the docs in a format you can use with your Mac apps later.
Another alternative is the free OpenOffice.org and similar open-source Office applications that can read and write MS-Office file formats.
