Yes as long as you backup your data and check compatibility here:

  • I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model. I have read some reviews of Maverick and Yosemite making the older macs slower. Is this true?

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory. and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model? Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite?
When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) suddenly very slow and laggy

This seems to be a popular question so I apologize, but I know there can be a number of issues that cause a computer to run slow, so I want to post my computer's specifics and hopefully someone can diagnose the issue for me without my having to bring it into the store. Thank you in advance.
Specifically my MacBook runs slow when trying to open or close Microsoft Word, iTunes, or access a folder with pictures and short videos in it. Frequently I get they are not responding, or have to close out of everything else in order to get the spinning wheel to go away and sometimes that doesn't even help.
I would just like the computer to be able perform simple commands in a timely manner like it used to. If there is any way I can get back to this I would be eterrrrnally grateful!
    Problem description:
MacBook responds very slow when trying to open applications. Slow, lags, rainbow spinning wheel all the time, even just to open a folder with pictures.

  • Can't upgrade MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) to snow leopard

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) and a copy of snow leopard on DVD. When I try to upgrade it says that snow leopard cannot be installed on this computer

      State:    Enabled
The retail dvd I have has a part number: MC223Z/A
    I am currently running 10.5.8
Anyone know what the problem might be?
    Thanks

Perhaps the HDD does not have sufficient room.  It needs a minimum of 5 GB for Snow Leopard.
In all other respects your MBP should be able to install 10.6.
Disk MC223Z/A is the appropriate retail disk.
    Ciao.

Download and intall the Windows Support software. You can start Bootcamp Assistant again and only select the option to download the support software. Then follow the instructions to save and install the support software.
Or, manually download the support software here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/downloads/.

  • MacBook Pro (15 -inch, Late 2011) with SATA II SSD by Apple?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro (15 -inch, Late 2011), ordered in April 2012, with a 512GB SSD. This is an original Apple branded Toshiba SSD and chosen on order.
Now I found out that it is only a SATA II SSD which is connected to the SATA 6G Chipset port.
I called the Hotline, just to clarify if it is normal to build in older standards or by accident. The guy told me, that his hardware supervisor mentioned, that it is impossible to run a SATA II SSD on a SATA 6G port which is totally nonsense. I'm a litte bit confused about the statement and would like to know if anybody else with an original SSD, ordered with a late 2011 MacBook Pro, has build in such old stuff.
    Kind regards,
    Michael

No read/write issues, just the question why apple build in a "slower" SSD than the controller is capable of.
Would be faster with a SATA 6Gb SSD particularly when you have to run four virtual machines at the same time.

  • Macbook Pro 13-inch Late 2011 with constant Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD)

    Hi Guys!
I really have a problem with the Spinning Wheel of Death and slow performance all the time. It suddently started after upgrading to OS X Mavericks.
These are the things i've tried so far:
    - Boot up in Safe Mode and Internet Recovery Mode to repair disc permissions and disc = No Errors found at all
    - Used SMARTreporter but everything returned as OK
    - Installed 16GB of ram installed
    - Looked in Activity Monitor, but everything appears to be okay with both RAM, CPU and HD
    - Boot with Apple Hardware Test = Everything OK
    - Booted up in Internet Recovery and erased the entire HD, clean installed OS X Lion (the OS i bought the Macbook Pro with)
First i thought it was a problem with my HD or my RAM. But everything is returning the OK result. I really hope some of you out there can help me, cause right now its realy hard to use it at the University. It looks like its a software problem, but i can't figure it out.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. It will be slow, but there should be no beachballing. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Audio out jack malfunction macbook pro 15-inch (late 2008)

The audio out jack on my MacBook Pro is functioning intermittently.  I am sure this is a mechanical problem effecting the analog signal (no red light indicating digital output). I have checked the system prefs for sound-- output shows device connection and mute box is not checked. If I jiggle the plug I might eventually get a connection. Did a little research and the problem seems to be occurring in the 15-inch Unibody MBP from late 2008 (my machine) due to faulty design of the jack.  Most sites do not recommend replacement of the jack due to the necessity of resoldering to the logic board. Some suggested inserting a piece of tinfoil to tighten up the loose jack but I am not comfortable with this. Any suggestions out there?

  • How do I add more RAM to my macbook pro 15 inch late 2008 model?

I am wondering if I ma able to add more RAM to my 15 inch MacBook Pro from late 2008. It currently has 2 slots each with 2GB of RAM each. Am I able to change those out with higher amounts of RAM for each slot? Or is this thing maxed out and i'm out of luck? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • I am unable to use an external microphone on my MacBook Pro (17-inch Late 2008)

I have a dilemma.  I wanted to use Skype on my MacBook Pro as I have before (successfully) but I have a new headset so I decided to plug it in and use it.  I plugged the green headphone jack into the headphone jack on the side of the computer and did likewise with the pink microphone jack into the mic/line-in hole.
Skype seemed to work but I realized the audio output was coming through the headphone but the audio input was coming from the internal mic on the computer.  I went into Settings and found the sound control.  I tried to change from internal mic to external line in, which you can do, but there is no audio input at all then. Switch back to internal mic and all is well again.
The headset is new and works fine on my DELL so I know the issue is in the MacBook.  If I open the sound conteol and unplug the headphone from the jack the computer knows and changes the settings right in front of me from headphones to internal speakers... as it should.  The same does not happen for the microphone.  Nothing seems to happen with the external line in port.
I have run out of ideas.  Is there something I am missing here?  All I want to do is use the mic on the headset instead of on the laptop.  Seems simple enough.
    Thoughts?  Comments? Suggestions?  Ideas??

A USB mic would be the best bet. Blue make some outstanding USB mics. I would just return the one that you've purchased and buy a Blue USB mic.

  • I have Macbook Pro 15-inch Early 2008 OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) but I cant upgrade to Maverick

    Please Help !!

MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later. You should be able to upgrade, why can't you?

  • What can I upgrade in MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)? (RAM, processor, ssd)

My MBP has been pretty sluggish, especially after Yosemite and I'm not ready to get a new one. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    You can upgrade RAM:
    Maximum Memory
8.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
You can also replace the HDD with a new one or with an SSD. Or if you use OWC's Data Doubler, then you can remove the optical drive and have both an SSD and a HDD or two HDDs.
You cannot upgrade the CPU or GPU.

My isight built in camera is only turning on for few second on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011 with osx Yosemite) when I use any camera needed app. Please help me. Its getting a little annoying.

If restarting Mac or reinstalling OS X does not correct this symptom, you likely have a hardware problem.  Contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for service.

Because the minimum requirement, as stated it the Yosemite specs, is for a Late 2008 Aluminum MacBook.
MacBook – Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009
