I have moved to rural Texas USA and have Exede satellite internet (only source available). A time machine is connected to the Exede satellite box. Besides the time machine I have one Airport Express. Both devices show function. Daily lose internet service

I have moved to rural Texas USA. Only ISP is Exede, a satellite service. I connect with a time machine and an Airport Express. Daily service gets dropped and requires disconnecting and reconnecting the time machine to the satellite box. The dealer is working the problem without success. He is not very familiar with Apple products. Any solutions?

You are going to need to do a few things. And there might not be a simple resolution at all.
I would ring the ISP again and ask if they support any routers.. because in the end, replacing the router might cost you $100 but save a lot of pain. You can keep the extreme for wireless connections to those devices that work ok with it.
I would also note, the issue might not be extreme but Mountain Lion.
Do a search .. many people have experienced issues with the wifi refusing to join when it wakes. I have experienced it myself. There was no problem with the wireless.. it was some sleep issue in the laptop.
But one thing I would do, on the last screen shot you gave me..
Where the ip range is 10.0
Please change that to 192.168
Because of the private addressing used by the ISP.. you will run into issues with routing.
When you change the value.. you will need to then reboot everything.. and everything will change to 192.168.1.x addressing. This is important.
Secondly, change wireless names to all meet the lowest common denominator.. ie SMB protocol.
So names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
I recommend you change all names to that spec.
C9 here gives some more info for why this is important, although the specific issue is different.

Thirdly I want you to install 5.6 utility unless you are running Snow Leopard or Lion still this is a bit tricky. But only 5.6 can access the Extreme's log. Also you can see the actual wireless connection graphs.
All of this was chucked away with v6.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
2. Download and install unpkg.
http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.

  • Devices not connecting to the "extended wifi" (i.e. Airport Express)

    Hi,
Let me quickly describe my network setup. Attached to a Motorola cable modem (TWC) is an Airport Extreme (upstairs), firmware 7.6.4, to create a wireless network. Then, downstairs, to extend the network I have 3 Airport Express' (same firmware), all set to "Extend a wireless network". I should also add that while I don't exactly know when they were manufactured, my Airport Extreme is the dual-band version, and I believe so are all my Airport Extremes. I juse Airport Utility 6.3.2. All seems to be working just fine - all green lines, no warnings or errors.
When I look at my different devices and check which Airport they are connected to - I use the Airport Utility to check - here's what I find:
    - Connected to the Airport Extreme are a total 7 devices, including a Mac, iPhone 4S, iPad and (cough) an Android tablet;
    - Connected to the first Airport Express are 2 devices - another iPad and an Apple TV
    - Connected to the other 2 Airport Expresses are connected... nothing.
Here's the thing: some of my devices get a pretty lousy signal (e.g. my phone downstairs). I would expect them to connect to one of the Airport Express downstairs - hey, I'm even in the same room! But even if I shut down and reboot the phone, it will connect to the Airport Express upstairs (which yield a weak signal). Same for my Macbook. So my internet on some devices is really quite slow, despite having enough wireless devices to power a whole neighborhood....
Any idea what could be behind this? Or is this "normal behavior"? As said, everything is working without error, I just suspect that the speed is suffering more than it should.
Thoughts, help or comments would be appreciated,
    Phili

Yes, it is cumbersone over the internet.
What version of Airport Express units do you have ?
The 1st generation "n" or the newer 2nd generation that is the current model ?
    1st generation
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB321LL/A/refurbished-airport-express-base-sta tion-with-80211n-and-airtunes
    2nd generation
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC414LL/A/airport-express-base-station-june-20 12
The 1st generation is NOT simultaneous Dual band. It will only do 2.4 or 5 GHz at a time.
I went through this before with my older versions. (not the old 'g' version though at this time)
Some of my devices would only connect to the main base station because they wanted 2.4 GHz but that band on the Express was already being used by a 5 GHz device.
A few weeks ago I finally replaced the 'n' version with the newest version which has "Simultaneous" dual bands.
Now everything works the way I want it to.
Just throwing some ideas out for you to think about.

  • Can i connect to the ethernet cable on a 2nd airport express

i have a wireless network setup from my cable box with an airport express (thru ethernet, of course).
i have a SECOND AE extending the network.
can i connect my roku box to the 2nd AE's ethernet port? will it make any difference? (as opposed to the roku box, used for netflix, picking up it's signal wirelessly).
trying to make this work as best i can, since my TV is not close to the internet connection...

can i connect my roku box to the 2nd AE's ethernet port?
    Yes
will it make any difference? (as opposed to the roku box, used for netflix, picking up it's signal wirelessly).
Probably not, since the AirPort Express is picking up its signal via wireless.
The same signal just appears at the Ethernet port. If anything, the signal at the Ethernet port will have a bit less bandwidth than the wireless signal since the Express must convert from wireless to Ethernet...and you always lose something in the conversion process.
Normally, you would use the Ethernet port if a device did not have wireless capability.

    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
    - You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it unless you had iOS 7 on the device. With iOS 7, one has to enter the Apple ID and password to restore the device.

  • AEBS (802.11n model) and Airport Express both disappeared

My Airport Extreme network worked properly yesterday. My Airport Extreme Base Station (new 802.11n model) is connected to a Motorola Canopy terrestrial antenna dish (via the WAN port) which is the DHCP server. It is also connected to my printers and wired computers via one of the LAN ports and an 8-port Ethernet Switch. The Airport Express is being used to connect my home entertainment receiver; I just added the Airport Express into the network yesterday and it worked great with both iTunes and Airfoil yesterday.
Today the green light was still on on the Airport Express, but iTunes could not find it. I tried to use AirPort Utility, but it says "AirPort Utility was unable to find any AirPort base stations." AirPort Utility can't even find the main base station even though I am wirelessly connected to the internet right now through it! The light on the Airport Express is now flashing yellow (it is not working at all other than flashing its light)
I am running the AirPort Utility from a 12" PowerBook G4. All of my Macs are PowerPC at present, so I am not yet utilizing the 802.11n (just 802.11g and wired Ethernet).
I guess I will need to setup the AirPorts again. How can I get the settings to stick so that I won't have to reset them on a daily basis? I am not sure what went wrong here.

I had the same issue as a lot of you with my Airport Expresses.
When you first set up your Airport Express did you use the new Airport Utility that comes with the 802.11n Base Station or did you use the Old Utility?
What I ended up doing was resetting my Airport Express to the Factory Defaults, then using my Airport Connection (top Right corner) choose the Airport Express from there, it's going to be a Apple SSID/Network name, and then resetup the Airport Express with the NEW Airport Utility.
Haven't had an issue with any of my connections. I have 2 Airport Express, one as a client and one as a WDS Remote Station.
I also live in a apartment, and my Macbook picks up 12 different Access Points. But haven't had any problems with drop offs or disconnects after reseting my Expresses and resetting them up with the Airport Utility that comes with the 802.11n Extreme.
    Hope that helps,
    AL

  • I have an airport express and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks. One with 5GHZ and one with 2.4GHZ so different devices can connect to either.

I have an airport express and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks. One with 5GHZ and one with 2.4GHZ so different devices can connect to either. I have an iphone 4 that will not connect to 5ghz.
    thank you!

Your AirPort Express is already providing two separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but each band is using the same wireless network name.
This is the default setup for the AirPort Express, which is recommended for most users. The theory here is that devices will automatically connect to the best quality signal based on their capabilities and distance in relation to the AirPort Express.
It is possible to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band, and then "point" devices at that network to connect. Some users swear by this option.....(I am not one of them).... but you might want to give it a try to see how it works for you.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on the AirPort Express
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Click Wireless Options near the bottom of the next window
Enter a check mark next to 5 GHz Name.....which will automatically add "5 GHz" to the network name....so you can identify it
Click Save, then click Update and wait a full minute for the Express to restart
Now you will need to "point" your 5 GHz capable devices at the 5 GHz network name.  2.4 GHz devices will connect to your "other" network name.

I have two Airport Expresses running at my house. Both are connected to different types of speakers. Neither speaker set has its own equalizer, and both require a different EQ setting to sound just right. Does anyone know of a way to have iTunes automatically change its EQ setting based on which Airport Express it is streaming to?

I'm in the same boat. I have a 6 zone amplifier running with 6 airport expresses to different rooms inside and outside the house. Each has it's own acoustic characteristics. I'd really love to be able to set each airport to equalize based on my SPL frequency sweep I did for each room.
Setting the eq in itunes won't do it as that is global plus I have many more sources for auiod other than itunes that use the AEs directly.

  • HT204053 I am unable to sync all contacts on my iMac (which includes outlook for Mac contacts) with my iPad mini, how do I do this, I have enabled icloud on both devices and ticked all the boxes.

I am unable to sync all contact in my address book on my imac with my ipad mini, it looks like only icloud & yahoo contact sync leaving out the ones in outlook for mac.  I have enabled icloud on both devices and ticked all the boxes.

Thanks for that, but my Outlook contacts are synced to and all in my mac contacts book, does this not meen they would go to icloud,
No, they are in the On My Mac account in the Mac Contacts app, not iCloud.
or are they in a different format despite being in mac contacts?  If so can the outlook contacts be exported in some other way to icloud?
Outlook is not compatible with iCloud, check Microsofts site if you need more verification.
If you want them in iCloud use Mac Contacts and move them from On My Mac to iCloud. This will remove them from Outlook.

iCloud is not the way to do this. You should use Migration Assistant - with this you can transfer your complete User folder from the old Mac including preferences and logins. You will need to connect the two with FireWire or USB depending on the models.
Ideally you should do this before you set up the new Mac - if you create a user account with the same name than the Migration will have to give the migrated user folder a different name. When you first switch on the new Mac it should ask you if you want to transfer your data, and give you instructions.

I have an AirPort Express, iPhone 5, and MacBook (late 2010). How do I see the graphical overview of my network? (I can't seem to find a way to see it).
My computer is acting....well, strange.  I can't put my finger on it but it doesn't seem right.  Menus look skewed.  Some applications look like they're trying to disguise themselves as apple (no consistant window formats).  Airplay turns on and off on my devices on it's own.  And some locked system preference seem to unlock themselves, or won't even grey-out after I lock them.
I have changed my password many times but the issue keeps coming back.  I feel like I'm going crazy - but I know that something just isn't right...maybe someone's been hacking me? (I have no idea why...)
Anyway, maybe I could have stemmed from an improper setup of my wireless network.
    Any thoughts?
Also, right now, when I just signed into apple communities....
I have an iCloud email address that is accociated with my 1 and ONLY Apple ID...
It seems to have been working but...
When I loged in here it only saw my:
                                  OLD MacBookPro
                                  3 Old iPods
My new MacMini with OS X Sever (Server is currently turned off)
Could my Apple ID be confusing my MacBook (which I'm currently using) as an old iPod or my old MacBookPro?
I doesn't even see my iPad (1st generation), or my iPhone 5
Also, the Mac App store is giving me the option to download Mountain Lion??? I already have version 10.8.3...
Can anyone perform an analysis on my account and computer?  I have been to the Apple Store 6 seperate time and the problem was not resolved (after 6 COMPLETE hard drive wipes).
    PLEASE HELP!

i guess you could put the aiport utility app on your iphone, click on the aiport express there, it will show you how many devices are connected to it and the mac addresses of those devices.

  • Two airport express no longer show w time capsule in utility

did the latest update interfere with our two airport express. i did the Mac update install and neither of the airport express show in the configuration.  we also had a power outage yesterday for about 5 hours.  not sure which is the culprit but after doing the install and rebooting the entire system we still have no airport express devices showing anymore under the time capsule and their lights are solid yellow.

Factory reset them.. they have stopped boot.. (solid yellow) .. it must flash yellow or when setup correctly go to green.
And yes, Yosemite has the worst airport utility and network on any new OS ever released.. ever.. I mean Vista badness.

  • My airport express no longer shows up in Airport Utility since I got a new router.

Hi all, I'm scratching my head at this one.
For years I've had an Airport Express and it has worked fine. I was using it simply to stream music from iTunes on my PC as well as my iPhone and iPad to my home theater which is in a different room. I had a Linksys WRT150N wireless router, and the Airport Express would join my existing network and stream music via Airplay.
A few days ago I replaced my Linksys router with a Netgear WNDR3800, and the Airport Express no longer connected. I assumed I had to set it up again, but it is not even recognized by Airport Utility, so I can't get to the setup screen. I tried performing a soft reset, hard reset, and attaching the Airport Express to one of my Netgear's LAN ports via Ethernet cable, but it still won't show up in Airport Utility. The amber light just flashes on the unit and I can't access any setup screens.
Am I missing something obvious? All of the help tips assume the Airport Express at least shows up in Airport Utility. In my Airport Utility there is nothing to select and it says "AirPort Utility was unable to find any AirPort wireless devices. Make sure the AirPort wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then click rescan to try again."
I am running a PC with Windows 7 and using Airport Utility v. 5.6.1 for Windows.
    Thanks for any help!
    -Rob

Did you try temporarily connecting an Ethernet cable from your PC to the AirPort Express to see if AirPort Utillty could "see" the AirPort Express that way? This method will work virtually all of the time unless the Windows Firewall or the PC's anti-virus program is blocking the connection attempt from your PC to the AirPort Express.
If you want to configure the Express using wireless only, you need to remember that when you reset the Expess back to default settings, it is now producing a wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx.
You must log on to the Apple Network xxxxxx wireless network first....no password is required.....and then open AirPort Utility so that your PC will establish a connection to the AirPort Express.
Once the AirPort Express has been configured to join your Netgear wireless network, you can log back on to your normal wireless network and all devices will be working with one another.

  • Multiple airport express plug-ins with i-tunes- lose sound after 4 songs

I have 3 airport express units, a MacBook and 24" IMAC G5 and my music library on a LaCie external hard drive. I have all the latest updates for the airport software on my computers. Now for the problem
I want to play my i-tunes library, it is over 500G in multiple locations throughout my house. I play from my I-Mac. All airport express connects to my linksys router network. I get inconsistent results when I play my music to multiple locations. After several songs play I have to go back to my computer and repress the speakers to play even though my imac shows the music playing I get no sound.
This could be because of a simple setting on my i-mac, I hope so. My energy savings for my screen goes off with inactivity after 15minutes. I changed that to an hour yesterday with no avail. I would love to have my music playing throughout my house on a consistent basis. Please help.

I forgot to also mention that I use the "interference robustness" feature on my IMAC. I have tried it both ways with the same unhappy results.

I have an Airport Express, which flashes amber, but when I go to manual set up, it says there's an error and tells me to close configuration? Once I complete that, the same thing occurs, and there's another error message?

Is this a new AirPort Express, or one that you have had for some time that has now developed problems?
What function do you want the Express to perform on your network?
